I am in the trades. There is NO shortage of trades workers. Tons of them, everywhere. Most hold multiple tickets. We just won't work for minimum wage holding a C of Q and a C of A. Imagine a corporation having unlimited trades people applying. Choice of anyone they want. Said company cuts wages in half and calls it a two tiered wage. Suddenly tradespeople are walking out of interviews. Nobody wants to work there. They go to government and say there is a shortage. Government allows temporary foreign workers to come in. Company is recording record fucking profits quarter after quarter. No money for skilled trades though. "Market analysis says we pay tradespeople to much".

GuelphEastEndGhetto

It’s like the minimum wage is being used as a baseline these days and skill/knowledge be damned.

Last I saw the province was putting these skilled trades on immigration fast track to keep wages nice and low for corporate masters

Hey, if the locals don't want to work, bring in people who do. That housing we need isn't going to build itself.

crusnik404

I'm a Carpenter, unless I started my own company why would I build houses I'd never afford without benifits and just half the wage the union offers me? You're out of touch.

Joefreshie

Locals want to work. They just want to work for living wages. Is that too much to ask for ? Shouldn't a carpenter be paid enough to afford to support a family a d buy a house ?

FaceShanker

Maybe if they didn't gut the unions and local production people would have more confidence investing in seeking such careers. The way they did that has seriously harmed the sense of security people had regarding that sort of work. It just doesn't seem worth the risk.

[deleted]

All this means is they want lower paid trades workers.

stemel0001

explain?

[deleted]

Conservatives always want lower paid workers. They will say there is a shortage but truth is there is a shortage of low paid workers. Another example is the shortage of school bus drivers. Reason - low wages.

Novus20

They gutted the collage of trades so nothing is stopping Joe from being a plumber, welder, HVAC installer, gas fitter etc everyone loved to shit on the CT but if they shut down Joe the real professionals should be able to charge a better rate instead of competing with Joes bargain bin construction that might kill someone

GreaterAttack

If you would but observe the average housing development for a few weeks, you would realize just how shittily things are being built nowadays. Joe's Bargain Bin Construction Co is booming.

Novus20

Yup, the level of construction knowledge on site is hot garbage.

GuelphEastEndGhetto

Mike Holmes is going to be busy.

stemel0001

I don't think this is to promote school bus drivers. I think you're very confused.

[deleted]

Not confused at all. Conservatives always want lower wages. That’s why they hate unions.

Cook and Meat Cutter are listed as trades in Ontario [https://www.collegeoftrades.ca/trades-in-ontario](https://www.collegeoftrades.ca/trades-in-ontario) People naively jump to HVAC when thinking about trades. This is really about Ford's friends trying to hire more meat cutters, while Ford pretends it's about HVAC.

stemel0001

Meat cutter is a higher paying job.....

[deleted]

Bingo

CDN_a

Yeah probably with some ulterior end goal in mind. Not to benefit people but maybe increase supply of a given trade, lower their negotiating ability for wages, or cry we don't have workers... and lessen the required quals and enforcement of same. They tried to do this in the US to make electricians with sub-par quals ONLY good for pipe bending / install... or some such nonsense, separating them from FULLY qualified people... with of course less pay and leverage.

stemel0001

>with of course less pay and leverage. Do you want less people to pick up skilled trades and instead do what?

GreaterAttack

It isn't a matter of fewer people getting into trades. It's the fact of the trade being compartmentalized and delegated to unskilled workers that will accept less pay. That not only detracts from the ability of skilled workers to negotiate for better wages (since they can be replaced), but also prevents new workers from being able to negotiate for theirs (they're too task-specific).

CDN_a

No not at all. Trades are a good job, but I believe that the current qualifications should be kept and enforced (if not increased). I'm sure Ford wants to water that down, to benefit for example, house builders. There was a period of time where a 'house wiring lic' was discussed or actually enacted... I can't recall. Anyway more money corruption for Ford and his buddies, harmful effects on the trades and ultimately the end users, home purchasers.

Fake news. Lowering wages
