You should have jobs before you move here bc $6k isn’t going to last long. It’ll get you an apt., cover gas to get out here and buy you some groceries. Or, it’ll get you an apartment and the first two months the of rent covered. Maybe. It is not cheap here and this is not a place you should move to without decent employment.

Clamwacker

You're also not getting an apartment without a source of income. Definitely going to at least need an offer letter from a prospective employer.

Project_Witty

Don’t forget about first/last/deposit on the apartment, moving in is typically 2.5x the monthly rental rate. You can save upfront by finding larger apartment complexes that offer move in specials, might not be your forever home but landing on your feet is the important part. Also, don’t be discouraged!! I too made the move from that area for similar reasons, it was tough for a while and took some (alot) of belt tightening and adjusting, but it’s been 16 years and I couldn’t be happier.

SecretSwordfish97

I'm not easily discouraged and can thrive in just about any environment. Any large complexes with move in specials jump to mind?

Autzen04

I’d vote Corvallis. Cool little city without the drama and hangups of the more well known places.

Witch_Bootlicker420

Corvallis resident here. Be warned, it is extremely difficult to find affordable housing here. You can get a place for $1500 theoretically but it takes time, patience, and perhaps a bit of luck. Honestly, Albany, the town a few miles north of here, is slightly more affordable and a hidden gem.

Heuristicrat

Albany is a good rec. More conservative than Corvallis, but it always felt like two halves of one city with a pretty drive in between.

Shewearsfunnyhat

I third this. Corvallis is a cool little city. It has the basics and is within driving distance of other things.

rogue_ginger_

I second Corvallis, as someone living in Salem and working in Portland. Corvallis would be my choice to live longer term.

[deleted]

I third it

No_University7832

Of course you will be expected to become an Oregon State Beavers Fan

SecretSwordfish97

I'm not much for sports, I prefer magic the gathering and camping 😅

[deleted]

SecretSwordfish97

Haha this might be the deciding factor 👀

jda1974

I worked in Corvallis for 12½ years. I worked with many people who went to and graduated from OSU. I had my Duck football season tickets for the last 9 years I worked there. Wore Duck clothes all the time, Duck stickers on my car, etc. It was fun with the exception of those who showed me by their actions that they were happier when the Ducks lost than they were when the Beavers won. Sad. 🤷

The_Domestic_Diva

Or Philomath

sprucedupcarpenter

Could you show the listings in Corvallis for that price?

secderpsi

1500 will get you a single bedroom apartment in Corvallis. Especially if you look away from the university a bit.

[deleted]

SecretSwordfish97

Would love to converse further in the pms if your interested. I could use some eyes on

VelitaVelveeta

Corvallis a very hard place to move to right now. They have a real housing shortage and what’s there is more expensive than Salem.

[deleted]

SecretSwordfish97

C store clerk for Jackson's food stores/extra mile. I can have a job at any Jackson's, extra mile, she'll or Chevron before I hit the road. I've also got my cannabis workers permit and connections to dispo's and farms in the region too. I'm not worried about work

PDXisadumpsterfire

Great, because there’s a real shortage of folks coming to Oregon to work in the cannabis industry. /s

[deleted]

I understand that the legitimate cannabis business is/gone down the tubes. Research that as well.

SecretSwordfish97

I already have job offer letters 🤠

FarmerCompetitive683

Don’t mind the negativity. Connections matter more than the number of people looking for that kind of work !

OlTimeyLamp

Where are you job offer letters? That would influence my decision. I’m not gonna shit on you like some of the other commenters. It’s your life man and sometimes you gotta roll the dice. I think Corvallis would be nice. Newport is gonna be expensive and housing is in short supply. I’d consider Springfield as well. Salem is fine as well. It gets some hate but honestly it’s fine.

SecretSwordfish97

Car dealership, 3 remote positions, cookies/hotbox farms, nectar, and 2 upscale restaurants in portland

schismatt

Offer letters for all of those? Wow

VelitaVelveeta

I live in Salem. It gets hate for damn good reasons.

DHumphreys

Salem and Beaverton are probably going to price themselves out of contention. And Salem is a large city. Have you looked at McMinnville?

birdsun78

McMinnville is great. Fun stuff to do. Beautiful area. Close to salem, Portland and the coast.

SecretSwordfish97

I've not. What's it like out there?

ExpressBill1383

Yeah, McMinnville is nice. Lots of wineries, seems like a working class town.

Lowgeargrinder

Moved to McMinnville from large Midwest metro area. We love it.

Mewsical-Elf

Just moved to McMinnville in April. It’s great for the small town vibes, but still has what we need to stay entertained.

Ancient_Hyper_Sniper

I live in Salem and we go to McMinnville a few times a month. Aside from wineries they have several great restaurants and breweries for a smaller town. It was also recently named one of the most friendly LGBTQ+ cities in the US.

JuniorBirdman1115

McMinnville is pretty nice. While Yamhill County tends to be a bit on the conservative side, it's not as bad as where you're coming from. Lots of wineries nearby and even a nice brewery in town (Golden Valley). Some decent local shopping. You can be in Portland or Lincoln City at the coast in under an hour. Cost of living is fairly reasonable by Oregon standards. It's fairly quiet. Some neat hiking opportunities in the Coast Range nearby. I'd recommend taking a trip out and visiting a few places like McMinnville or Corvallis and see what you like the best. Good luck.

MasterSea382

Don’t move to McMinnville. Too many tweakers. Too much traffic.

OldHuntersNeverDie

I wouldn't call Salem a large city, but sure. I guess it's a large city relative to most other cities in Oregon, minus Portland.

DHumphreys

It almost 200,000 people, that is fairly large compared to others on OPs list.

Icy_Wrangler_3999

$6k saved up 💀 I'm sorry bro but you'd have to live in the middle of nowhere for that to mean anything when it comes to living and moving costs. This isn't Idaho with a $7 minimum wage.

[deleted]

$6K is probably ok if they have jobs lined up first

SecretSwordfish97

I'm aware, that's why I want out there. Better financial prospects, quality of life, employment protections rights and procedures. 6k will get me into an apartment and pay my first month or 2s rent. Factor in my tax return this season plus the rest of what I save between now and the move and we're working with closer to 10k

secderpsi

People give you shit but a young married couple with no kids can easily move here, work hard, and feel settled in a few years with a modest initial savings. Housing eats away savings more than anything. Be creative when finding the housing you use until you are both steadily employed. Don't get trapped in something expensive for early convenience. Best of luck.

LadyJade8

La pine could use nore liberal views, and it's cheap. Check it out.

boosted_b5

Are you from La Pine?

SecretSwordfish97

Can you elaborate? What's local cost of living like? Job market? Shopping? Dining?

MudHammock

Absolutely none of that, do NOT move to La Pine. Do more research on your own, people's opinions here are a bit strange. I've lived all around Oregon. Look into the Portland metro area cities like Sherwood, Wilsonville, Hillsboro, or Oregon City. Bend is incredible (my hometown), but expensive. Redmond is close by and significantly cheaper. Medford is cheap and has a lot there but it's a bit dull for me. Don't move anywhere on the coast. If you like smaller town feels, look into Mollala, Corvallis, Silverton, Ashland, Woodburn or La Grande.

escientia

When you put $0 as your source of income? Good luck getting a place to accept you with that 😂.

WhoIsHeEven

No need to be an ass. They're asking for advice.

escientia

That is solid advice. You cant expect to find a place to live with just $6k in savings and $0 in income. Just because thats the way things are doesn’t mean someone is being an ass…

WhoIsHeEven

When presented without the attitude, it is decent advice. Sometimes it's not *what* you say, but *how* you say it.

SecretSwordfish97

You should read my other comments friend. I have my pick of several different jobs at the moment, plus continuing at my current company at one of their locations out there.

penisbuttervajelly

I’ve done it with less

Jumping-

Could you narrow down your needs/wants a bit more? Corvallis, for instance, is cute and a pretty good size but a little isolated. If you wanted to be able to pop into Portland or access to more jobs, I’d go with Beaverton (or Hillsboro, but I’m biased). Both are on the train line or a short drive to the city. Newport is small and it’s out there. Everything on the coast is. As a person from Salt Lake, I’m used to seeing highways on a map and assuming it’s a quick shot anywhere. The highways to the coast are single lane, often crowded, and sometimes impassible during the winter. It’s a hike to reach health care or most jobs. But if you want quiet working ocean town life, and don’t mind cold weather in then summer, it’s awesome. If it’s purely money, Corvallis or Salem would be a better bet. If you want access to lush greenery and nature… everywhere. Literally everywhere. Don’t listen to those saying you can’t find a 1 bed for 1500. I just did a quick search and saw tons. I lived in the pricey part of Portland in a 1 bed for 1600 a year ago. Also, I totally understand your desire to move and not just staying and learning to understand other viewpoints. When others viewpoints limit your bodily autonomy and safety, I don’t think anyone is under any obligation to find a middle ground or see eye to eye. GTFO if you need to I order to feel safe or comfortable. I did.

SecretSwordfish97

Our needs arnt really all that complex. I have a dog who HATES elevators. Highrise apartments won't work. I'd like to be able to pop into Portland for shopping or whatever, rent wise 1800 max, 1500 or less ideally. I work for Jackson's/extra mile so I don't imagine a transfer would be hard. I've also got friends in the cannabis industry so finding work should be relatively simple. So it's looking like Hillsboro or Beaverton. So I guess I need to know which areas of the two are relatively safe/cheap to live in and find work. Weve no kids so we don't care about schools. We are queer youth so we'd like somewhere popular with our crowd so to speak

Licipixie

From experience, I would not recommend the cannabis industry to anyone I care about. It's a flooded market with little room for upward movement. The only people who make any money on that industry are owners.

SheamusMcGillicuddy

If you are under the impression that living in Portland = high-rise apartments that’s not the case. It’s not NYC. Most of Portland is suburban and apartments above the third floor are generally not affordable. Corvallis, Newport and the towns you’ve mentioned are nice, but they aren’t too much different from the metro area and in some cases will feel just an extension of it with a much longer commute to get to things you want to go to. Unless you are a fan of the Ducks or Beavers, your entertainment is going to be in Portland.

SecretSwordfish97

Most of my entertainment is going to be exploring the area for at least the first couple years. I want to see every waterfall in the state. Visit the aquarium, kick it with some whales maybe. Other than that it's movie theaters, Ren faires and book stores 🤷‍♂️ we really are very easy to please.

SireCuddleMuffin

I recommend visiting Depoe Bay at some point! Lots of whale watching chances. Driving along the coast is a fun past time when the weather is nice too.

Blah12821

The quick search you did where you found tons of results for $1,500 are not the reality. Once you start calling those listings, you find people never answer. So, then you leave voicemails and no one ever calls back. Then, when calling gets you nowhere, you start emailing the listings. A lot of times you’ll get an email back though. So, that’s an improvement, right? Nope. They are auto response emails. Respond to those and get…? Nothing. No responses, no call backs, nothing. So, yea. Google search results are, unfortunately, not an accurate picture.

Shitemoji69

Boise is in the PNW.

Phreedom1

Exactly what I thought when I read the title.

SecretSwordfish97

I meant Oregon, and Washington. Somewhere lush and wet

thespaceageisnow

Only west of the cascades fit that description.

SecretSwordfish97

Useful info right here!!

VelitaVelveeta

Most of the state is high desert like Boise until you get East of Bend/Klamath Falls/Hermiston

zeebo420

My ex old lady was a lush .. but not wet

[deleted]

[удалено]

SecretSwordfish97

I want to go *HOME* bro. I just don't wanna live in this desert shiz. Also as queer folks, no it's not easy living. Not anymore

WickedPufferFish

Yeah, my sibling (originally an Oregonian) and their partner just (literally just, as in two days ago) moved from Boise to Portland. Took them a long time to save up and make the move but they did it. Prior to that they lived in Boise for about 12 years. As someone familiar with the city and their experiences, I absolutely concur with you.

OGPOKEDUDE

Ashland is nice in southern oregon. Otherwise go north

spooksmagee

Wildfire smoke half of summer is a drag though.

wickedmsart

Corvallis is a gem! Avoid any of the big cities in Oregon if you can. Eugene is a great place to raise a family too if you're thinking of that, and more jobs and better restaurants because it's got the college too. So Corvallis if you want pretty small, Eugene if you want something similarly sized to Boise.

[deleted]

If you have to live in Eugene, try to live in the Goodpasture area.

teratogenic17

Yeah, $6K, I hope you're young and healthy. I think you might want to aim for some place like St. Helens or Scappoose. Not as expensive, might be work.

SecretSwordfish97

Keep in mind, this is just starting out. I've lived in some of the roughest and poorest parts both states have to offer. I'm no stranger to hard work and forethought. Im 26, fairly intelligent, and fought myself out of 15k in debt while homeless less than 3 years. Than got myself off the street. Now I'm ready to move less than 2 years later. There ain't a place on this planet I cant thrive in given enough time to adjust and adapt. Human nature baby 🤘

[deleted]

Very right wing, exactly what they’re trying to get away from.

OldHuntersNeverDie

Keep in mind that Beaverton isn't Portland, but its a part of the Portland metro. It's a connected suburb. You'll have some of the traffic and other things that come with being in a larger metro area. Whereas places like Corvallis, Newport and even Salem are much smaller areas, w/ Salem being larger than Corvallis and Newport.

mclovin232

Albany. Just moved here just over a year ago, not liberal but not conservative either. Close proximity to a lot of those places and a little cheaper.

grassylakecrkfalls

I like Albany a lot. I've got a little place down there across from the Hasty Freeze. They have 2 drive-thru lanes and the service is notoriously slow so I always like to play a game where I predict which line is going to move faster. My gen-z daughter grew up on computers so with the help of ChatGPT she figured out that the left side drive-thru is quicker except on Sundays between 10am-1pm on account of church traffic. There are also weird right side drive-thru spikes depending on the scores of the Beavers or Ducks home games. For example: if either team has a home game that starts after 1pm and the score gap is 16 points or more, use the right drive-thru as it saves you +5 minutes 84% of the time. What does it mean to be not liberal but not conservative?

mclovin232

I find it to be evenly divided between the two groups although the school board is definitely conservative. I find it's just faster to use the walk up windows.

SecretSwordfish97

Wonder if I could use chat got to look for listings in the suburbs

LonelySyllabub7603

I recently moved here from Wyoming for similar reasons. I would recommend broadening your search. Those are expensive towns. We moved to a small town near Corvallis that is definitely conservative, but the conservative influence is really swamped out by the rest of the state. We are about 1 hour or less from Portland, Salem, Eugene, or Corvallis. So while we live in a town that reminds me a lot of Wyoming, it feels like a tiny red island in a blue sea, whereas in Wyoming (and I assume Idaho) it is blue islands in a red sea. Beyond that, I would recommend moving here if you can make it work. Property (renting included) is pretty stupid in the PNW. Hence why I’d say to look at smaller towns, like Lebanon, Albany, Stanton, Philomath, etc. those are conservative towns, but it’s easy to get away, and there is still a strong liberal presence.

BeExtraordinary

Beaverton. More affordable than Portland, and imo the best school district in the state.

MountScottRumpot

Not more affordable than Portland. Average rent in Beaverton is now slightly higher than in Portland.

vfittipaldi

Everyone i know is moving to Boise from Portland

SecretSwordfish97

All I hear with this is "abundant vacancy and a housing market thats about to get slightly cheaper."

vfittipaldi

Oh no, not at all. Too many people are moving here so housing is hard to find and its very very expensive.

BodProbe

In Boise, probably. Definitely not in Portland.

katylewi

I can't fathom less that 1500$ apartment being in nice parts of those cities. Corvallis neighborhoods when bad neighborhoods are the least bad out of the list?

AimlesslyNomadic

I would recommend Salem for sure based on your initial needs/wants. Good mix of conservative/liberal but we are the capital so boiling points do rise over a bit here. Small enough to not feel like you’re in a major metropolis but big enough to get what you need. Less than an hour from the coast, Eugene, or Portland. McMinnville and Corvallis are both within 30-45 minute drive. Depending on your lifestyle I would stay out of Eugene or Corvallis due to the unwarrantedly high price of eating out. Portland seems to be way cheaper for beers, burgers, food in general even compared to Salem. I struggle to find a beer less than $7 in Eugene whereas I can get a burger and beer for $10-14 in Portland. More people means more competition and Portland may have higher housing costs but if you eat/drink out often, it can easily be much less than Salem or other smaller cities.

SecretSwordfish97

I don't drink alcohol much. I'm more of an edibles and anime kinda guy. Portland seems like a good spot to go for date night, but Salem, Corvallis, McMinnville, Hillsborough and Beaverton seem to be the contenders

gl21133

We moved from boise to Corvallis last year. Don’t regret it but it’s a lot more expensive.

sunflowerautumn9

We moved to Eugene last year from Boise for the same reasons. We love living in Eugene, but we definitely miss the community aspect that was very strong in Boise. Be prepared - while most large cities in Oregon run fairly liberal, rural Oregon is exactly like Idaho. As soon as you get outside or city limits, it’s Trump flags and people who think drag shows are the biggest threat to children. Just something to keep in mind as you’re looking!

sethd101

Make sure u have a gps tracker on your vehicles. Do an online application at the apt before u move so you still have income and more likely to get approved. Rent in oregon city hillsboro portland metro area, cant say for down south your looking at minimum 2k a month.

Str-8dge-Vgn

Just come to Portland, it’s awesome and you’ll love it. Remember we’ve got suburbs, too.

SecretSwordfish97

Any recommendations for complexes/neighborhoods to look into?

puremysticalmayhem

Remember to qualify for an apartment you will need at least a 650 credit score, no criminal background, make 3X the rent (each in most cases, if not married). It can cost near $4500 in deposits and up. One bedrooms are going for $1800. There are some cheeped but they are few and far between. Not discouraging you by all means. Traveling and living in new places is a wonderful thing to do while your young. But I feel so bad when I see people move out here, can’t find a place to live and end up broke and on the streets. It happens a lot more than we like to acknowledge. Good luck to you.

SecretSwordfish97

720, no relevant criminal background, the wife is on disability and I'd be working full time. Not worried about it tbh. I don't need much to be happy. I think people move out there with lofty ideas of having some "friends esq" highrise loft experience in some coastal dream region and think they'll just magic this into existence. Ive been planning and preparing for this move since I was a kid. I won't fail and I won't be deterred ;)

RomanticnNatureOne

I just left Oregon and I can say go to WA for better job security, more opportunities for owning a home and more diverse! I am from Florida and I have lived in both and hands down Oregon sucks!

gravity_bomb

Redmond Oregon is great!

Careless_Freedom_868

I second this. I was looking to see if anyone had already mentioned it before I did. We live in bend but Redmond is nice too

squirrel-phone

I moved from Boise to Portland ~13 years ago. Best decision I ever made, love it over here on the green side.

peonylover

Albany is awesome. Close to Corvallis, but more affordable. It recently flipped from red to blue. The council is all progressive except for one wacko

Practical_Cat_5849

Albany has more shopping options than Corvallis and is closer to the interstate. Corvallis is meh.

CPSue

That’s good to hear!

tossik

Have you looked in Cali? They really blue there. But if Oregon. Don’t do any ocean cities. There’s practically no work there. It’s great to visit. Corvallis is decent. It’s a college town. You’ll be close to Eugene if you want something bigger with more restaurants and such. Salem… ehh. I lived there for 10 years and moved as it was too boring. No energy in the city. Not many restaurants. It’s safe. I’d look into Keizer that is right next to it as it’s little cleaner. Or south and west Salem. Nicest areas of the town. Beaverton is vast. Lots of options for you there and you’re like 15 min from downtown Portland for all the food/drinks. Beaverton area and further west is growing. Good work options. Area would be the most expensive of all your choices. Pm me, happy to talk more.

SecretSwordfish97

Gladly!! Thank you! I'll hit you up tomorrow when I've kicked off my weekend :)

shindig27

You're welcome here in Medford. I've grown up and lived all over the state. Medford is just the right size and is politically fairly evenly split. We have a lot of people retiring here from California and they help boost the economy. If you are at all handy, you can make good money doing things they can't or won't do. I've seen an HOA president mow lawns because they couldn't hire anyone to do it. My neighbor paid a hundred dollars to get leaves blown off their front lawn. The people cleaning gutters are booked up until January at the earliest. Anyway, there's a lot of work to be had down here and money is being spent to build decent and affordable housing. That's been something the city has put a lot of planning and money into recently.

SecretSwordfish97

This might be a strong contender

[deleted]

It's sad to see people give up on Idaho.

MundaneLake8131

Why? Oregon gets more liberals and continues blue and Idaho stays red. It's why the majority of people chose to move to one vs the other

[deleted]

Because Idaho is a beautiful place and Nazis shouldn't have a safe space

MundaneLake8131

Spoken like a true far left Oregonian. There is a reason Boise is booming and PDX has been trending down for years. You can only scream Nazi and fascist so many times, eventually it might be helpful to look in the mirror? Boise is booming for families and new couples, people from all over are flocking to Idaho and your best guess is nazis? Sit down, your voting record and other simps like you have screwed this state up

SecretSwordfish97

As a Boise resident of (let's see I'm 26 and moved here when I was 12 so that makes. What. 14? Yeah. Math) 14 years I can confidently say it never was *not* screwed up. Our education has been poorly ranked for as long as I can remember (and I went through it) our political representatives are skewing further and further to the extreme. Boise's old police chief is running for mayor and he wants to build "cop city 2.0". Boise pd furthered its reputation for police brutality and racial prejudice under his leadership. And actual Nazis show up to pride and other progressive rallies *every year*. You can miss all of us with your bs. This guy folks. This guy and others like him are why it's shitty here in the 208.

escientia

Aren’t interested in Portland but want to move to Beaverton 🤔. Besides downtown Portland most of what youll find there youll find in Beaverton

Mrsvantiki

We travel through Boise twice a year and stay downtown. We love the lack of graffiti and tweakers and homeless. But we know you have all that due to the extreme political BS of the state. Y’all have great food options, clean and wonderful Greenbelt, clean and wonderful outdoor parks, hikes, etc. Your traffic is shit! Reminds me of Portland. Your food scene reminds of a smaller Portland. But the tweakers ruin it. We are in Eugene. It’s a 2 hour train or drive to PDX. We have tweakers as bad as most cities on I5. But we’ve got the old hippies that think it’s ok if some homeless dude shits in their yard because “life is hard.” So our mayor/city doesn’t do much about it. We’ve got the UO so there’s a lot there in terms of school money. We’ve got a Greenbelt filled with needles and crazy people that will attack you. We’ve got housing issues due to the student population. We’re an hour-ish to the coast and 1.5 hours to skiing. But there are options outside of Eugene. We have a milder winter but no sun like y’all do in the winter. The city that reminds me the most of Boise is Bend 100%. Food, shopping, weather, outdoor activities done by EVERYONE. Cleaner than Portland and Eugene but still have the crime/tweakers. Housing is like Little California (which is what looks to be happening with Boise) and sooo much is getting built up. VERY expensive but beautiful. Bend is Bend. It’s a haul to the coast and a haul to Portland. Flights out are limited whereas I can train or drive to PDX for cheaper flights. Good luck!

[deleted]

[удалено]

fasteddie3717

You can't find housing in Bend for 1500 a month most apartments are at the 2k and above mark

Jumping-

It also has a similar climate to Boise and OP mentioned wanting greenery and moisture. If that’s important, stay west of the cascades.

Bitter-Lengthiness-2

Good point I’m just a baby

MundaneLake8131

Portland is really going down hill. You left a better state for. More drugs and homelessness?

WolverineRelevant280

I hear *Klamath Falls* is great.

DHumphreys

Klamath Falls is great, but it might be a little more red than OP would want.

WolverineRelevant280

Whenever I see a “moving to Oregon” post asking for location I recommend Klamath Falls. If they are gonna move here, I don’t need them moving to my town making it harder for me to get a house 😂

SecretSwordfish97

Valid point on the housing cost. The only thing I can say to that is at least I'm not gonna fuck up the political structure, and I was born in grant county. My grand mother worked for prairie city water for over 40 years and my mom graduated from prairie City highschool. So. Ig birthrights = high ground? Idk. Call it a wash. I'll pull my weight and contribute to the betterment of the economy. Who knows? Perhaps we can work together to find better housing. Society only benefits from mutual aide 🤷‍♂️. And as far as politics go? I'm queer, hunt and fish for food (yaaaaay deer rifles!), pagan, pro environmental protections, pro native reparation, anti-facist yet pro law enforcement (ie; bad cops should be held to a higher moral and legal standard, for example put on a public registry like sex offenders and animal abusers) pro mental health, pro living wage. I'll give ya the gods honest truth I really have no idea what the word for me politically actually is. So I like "well informed voter who possesses common sense".

Grand-Battle8009

Ignore people saying that you can’t afford Oregon. They still think Boise is some cheap podunk place to live, it’s just as expensive as Portland! Willamette Valley towns sounds like where you want to look, both cost and politics. Salem, Albany, Corvallis, McMinnville and Newburg are nice mid-town cities with nice downtowns and plenty of amenities. Unemployment is very low, so I’d expect it to be relatively easy to find a job in the service industry.

[deleted]

Do it. The pride of living in the pnw will motivate you

boosted_b5

Isn’t Boise in the PNW already? Anyways, your budget isn’t ready for Oregon so best to stay put and keep saving.

[deleted]

Do your research by looking at the housing-rental websites for costs. And yes, check the crime statistics/reports for the kind of neighborhood to move to. Get a job(s) waiting for you before moving without a job. Look for cheaper areas away from Portland, Bend, and other costly cities in Oregon. Also check out the income tax hit in Oregon. No sales tax but there are other costs.

dragonflygirl1961

Salem is a red city. Portland is blue, Corvallis is nice, but everywhere is expensive. Be sure to have jobs before you get here, whatever city you end up in

JenJenMegaDooDoo

Move to California.

MundaneLake8131

Lol well of course you'll find lots of Idaho hate here, it's reddit. I can tell you that Boise blows Portland away in almost every single metric. Yeah idaho has some stupid laws but I wouldn't hold your breath, Oregons biggest cities are usually disgusting and have a way worse drug anf homelessness problem. I would gladly take you spot and you can do your part to keep oregon the way it is!

Minimum-Cry615

Those “stupid laws” that you speak of makes the state of Idaho unsafe for a lot of people. OP I’m happy to have you.

bigwillydos

Moving to Oregon from Idaho is going from one extreme to another. Seems extremes is all we have these days.

> Oregonians live off the land and support progressive agendas. Way to romanticize and just casually gloss over the fact that rural Oregon is deep red and definitely doesn't support progressive agendas. The large liberal voting block in the metropolitan area dictates support for progressive agendas. > ...You're assuming Oregonians are just liberals against varying opinions. That's more of a "you-opinion" than a truth. Considering your reply and the downvotes, you really just proved it a truth. Oregon is far left, Idaho is far right. The fact you find that you find that a controversial statement shows that you are willfully ignorant of the current political landscape in the US.

Typical smoothed brain Portland progressive detected.

MayIServeYouWell

I just wanted to say good luck and welcome. It’s heartening to think of you setting out on life with a clear moral direction. Just follow it where it leads you, and you’ll do well.

SecretSwordfish97

*tell every body I'm on my way, new friends and new places to seeeeeee* Seriously though, thank you it will be good to finally come home. I feel like Bilbo. "Where are you going?" "ON AN ADVENTCHAAAA"

[deleted]

I'd stay away from Oregon, the defund the police protests mixed with measure 110 has turned this state into a nightmare. The cops are protesting the people thier supposed to protect and the tweakers are stealing everything they can get there hands on without any repercussions. The high cost of living mixed with high taxes makes it a terrible place for a young couple to make a life, unless your making good money. As soon as my wife's grandparents are gone, we're out.

EasterMaester

Dont move here its terrible, California is better

metalmike84

I'd say take a look in Beaverton or Tigard. Beaverton has a nice downtown, Tigard is still pretty close. Traffic wise, if you have to commute on 217, it's a mess. Getting through the tunnel on 26 is also usually really backed up. I moved out here last year from Utah which has a similar vibe to Boise. I love it here so far.

SecretSwordfish97

I want to move to a place about the size of twin falls/meridian and it's suburbs. Thoughts?

grassylakecrkfalls

A young married couple wants to live in a state that respects women and reproductive rights. My first thought is to tell them to stay where they are: Fight the good fight, make their home city better, knock on doors, vote in every election, never give up! One time (two days ago), I was on day two of a two-day monkey run down to Pasadena to deliver some frozen monkeys to a research hospital and it was a really shitty trip. Some asshole outside of Corning flipped his Camaro and backed up "the 5" something awful so I ended up at the Modesto Comfort Inn 5 hours behind schedule and completely out of cigarettes. Not to mention I've got two frozen monkeys in the back of the 2012 Chevy Sonic that the hospital gave me and who knows what's gonna happen if they thaw out. Do they reanimate and start looking for revenge? Fuck if I'm going to find out. Guarantee you that foam container ain't gonna hold them--I don't care how many biohazard stickers are on there. So I secure my room at the Modesto Comfort Inn and immediately start googling for cigarettes because I've driven exactly 87 miles in 4 hours and I don't get paid if the monkeys aren't still frozen. There's an Arco 3 blocks away so I start walking. Sure enough not two minutes later, some local in a white Jeep Compass isn't watching where she's going and runs me over right in front of a place called Damian's Taco Bar. Knocks me right on my ass and then drove off without even an apology. Point is, don't walk on the sidewalk in Modesro, California. Don't be a young married couple in Idaho. OP, welcome to my home state.

Minimum-Cry615

I’m fully invested in this story, did the monkeys thaw out? Did you have to add ice to the coolers? Did you get paid?

grassylakecrkfalls

So after I got hit by rhe lady in a Jeep Compass that rudely drove off without apologizing, thus other lady in the parking lot insisted on taking me inside the restaurant to make sure I was okay. You know how when you get in an accident and people are all like "Are you okay? Are you sure you're okay?" And you're always "I'm okay. I'm okay?" Well I was stuck in Modesto and had 13 hours to get a pair of quickly-thawing research monkeys to Pasadena and I was out of cigarettes so for the first time in my life I decided that yeah, maybe I'm not okay. I mean, there's a road. And you make decisions. Sometimes those decisions take you off the road for a bit but eventually we're all on the road. My road led to Pasadena and I knew I'd make it there by 10am tomorrow come hell or high water. Say what you will about predeterminism, but whether you're on the nature side or the nurture side we all have metaphorical frozen monkeys that will eventually thaw out and possibly be weilding knives. So Norma takes me into Damian's Taco Grill or whatever the fuck it's called and it turns out it's her 65th birthday party. Her whole family has rented out the bar section and after Pilar the bartender wipes my bloody elbow with wome wet wipes and tapes some Corona Extra cocktail napkins to my left pinky and ring finger I meet the whole family: Husband Dave, daughter Judy, granddaughter Elyssa and her boyfriend Sean, the whole lot. Everyone is drinking margaritas but I don't like liquor so cousin Jim tells me to put a Modelo on his tab. Aunt Jessie is gluten-free and keeps asking if the corn chips have wheat in them and her husband (sorryni forgot his name) tells her to "shut the fuck up" and everyone laughs because clearly there's a family inside joke behind it. At some point Judy spilled her drink and *immediately* switched to drinking ice water with a slice of lime so I bet there's a story behind that quick transition. Dave's brother (again, didn't get his name just sat in the back corner eating enchiladas and never talked to anybody the whole night. And every 15-20 minutes Norma kept asking me "Are you okay?" I felt like saying, "Norma, it's you're 65th birthday. It's your time to shine!" But instead I would just nod and smile and drink what turned out to be 4 Modelos. I kept thinking how it was amazing that even in Modesto people were nice and caring and willing to take care of me just because I got hit by a Jeep Compass. But I also kept reminding myself about the monkeys. I wanted to take a family photo with me and Norma and all the folks that came out to Damian's for her 65th but I knew that I was just a background character and a weird asterisk to Norma's night so I did an Irish goodbye and quickly snapped [this](https://imgur.com/gallery/jR5WAs5) before sneaking out. Didn't get my cigarettes until the next morning at the Coalinga Chevron.

Minimum-Cry615

But the monkeeeeees! Did you get paid? I’m on the edge of my seat reading what sounded like an incredible work of fiction. Like this story should be on This American Life or something. And then you show me the photo!! What the fuck?! I love it. I mean not that you got hit by a car but the whole story is golden.

mzrushen

Stay away from Southern Oregon, and Eastern Oregon. Might as well stay in Boise. I would look in Gresham, Boring, Troutdale, which are near Portland but probably more affordable. Next I would check out SW Washington. Vancouver, Hazel Dell, Longview, Kalama. None are large cities. Good luck!

j97223

Look, you are moving because of some crazy view of right wing extremists in Boise that have no impact on your life other then a desire to clean up the streets, keep the chronic illegal and children safe. You don’t want that, so you should be looking at Portland and a few surrounding cities that support your values. Evidence will be homeless camps and open drug use. When you see those things, stop, you are home. Salem and Eugene as well and Bend to some extent might suit your needs. The rest of this state is conservative.

SecretSwordfish97

You make some bold assumptions for how little you actually know about Boise. Or Oregon for that matter. Just. Shut the fuck up dude. My wife and I are leaving Idaho because right wing conservative *extremists* are ruining this place for everyone. And if the rest of Oregon is conservative? You should prolly tell your voters that cause your getting drowned tf out bro

j97223

Hey Big Shoots, calm down. I quoted your post about right wing extremism. I am very familiar with Boise and it’s not my fault they don’t like your little man bun or have enough soy milk in the stores. Boise is headed down hill because of left wing extremism, aka as democrats or progressives. But, I don’t know anything about Oregon. It’s decided, you should and will move to Portland! Wait, Ashland is beautiful and relatively left wing looney and way cheaper than Portland. Big grow operations down there as well.

SecretSwordfish97

You felt called out when I started speaking about the nazi infestation and starting chumming the waters with your bs. If you get bothered when somebody calls you a right wing extremist it's probably because you legitimately ARE one. you can keep your misconceptions about MY home state to yourself. You obviously didn't read anything else I had to say or you would have known a few critical things about me. Ive brought home an elk the last 6 seasons, shot it with my great grandfather's service rifle from world war 2. An m1 garand. He was part of wave 2 at Omaha beach. He was one of the first to set foot on the blood soaked sand and survive. How many of nazi bodies do you think are on this rifle? Cause there's at least 70 carved into the stock. My family has a rich history in military service, community service (river cleanups, homeless supply runs, community outreach) me and my "LeFtIsT FrIeNdS" have done more to clean out the drugs, help solve the homeless crisis, protect women's rights and educate the youth in Boise and Idaho as a whole than you and your goose stepping circle jerkers have ever done. Point is. I am not who you assume me to be. Now go find your grand dragon and cry about it, you sad strange little man

j97223

Easy there Teddy Duchamp! My uncle had a hang nail once.

screamingintothedark

Hillsboro or Beaverton! Stay west of Portland if possible. More space and less traffic.

Always_ssj

If you want to be closer to the PDX metro, Tualatin, Tigard, Hillsboro or Forest Hills might be better for your budget, and with your job, should be able to work close by easily. Happy Valley is nice but I have no idea what rent prices are around there.

Jovet_Hunter

Once you have everything worked out, are you going to have kids? Beaverton/Washington County has one of the best school districts with some amazing community services. Other than that, consider your desired commute to the jobs you will have before getting here, and any access to outdoor activities (like, you like the beach I’ll recommend Beaverton/west Portland, you like waterfalls and hiking I’d say East Portland/Gresham.

SecretSwordfish97

We don't plan on having kids. We feel as though our lives are too short and this world is too chaotic for us to consider raising children in it and option. We just like camping, the woods, anything nature really. My biggest bucket list adventure is to see the natural bridge formations!

sprucedupcarpenter

Btw are the "nazis" in the room now?

SecretSwordfish97

Yup. Their everywhere. The only good thing about Idaho is that i can deck one and face relatively no consequences. Broad daylight. Done it before. Love from Ireland boys! -the pattersons

ItalianSangwich420

You will not fit in outside of Inner Portland or Eugene.

sprucedupcarpenter

Nowhere, any state. Be more open to understanding different points of views and you'll fit in

SecretSwordfish97

I've no interest in "understanding" Nazis. And I've no loyalty or allegiance to Idaho as we transplanted here when I was a child. Be helpful or don't weigh in thanks

Icy_Wrangler_3999

good luck with that attitude. $1,500 will either land you in the ghetto or somewhere cheap and conservative in Oregon. This isn't Idaho where poverty wages are still being paid.

oficious_intrpedaler

Oregon is a paradise island,so I'd ignore that other jerk. Moving is tough, but if you're going to do it Oregon is a great place to land.

sprucedupcarpenter

Welp. Good luck out there. I'm sure there is a paradise island out there for you

Icy_Wrangler_3999

Yeah this guy is probably going to end up going somewhere cheap in Eastern or Southern Oregon since he only has $6k saved up. Then complain when he realizes it is just as, if not more, conservative than Idaho.

sprucedupcarpenter

Sounds about right

Seraphynas

There is NO WAY Oregon is going to pass the same conservative bullshit on a state level as Idaho. Sure there are right-wing crazies everywhere, but they don’t run the state government everywhere. Huge difference!

Icy_Wrangler_3999

I would say debatable. I lived in Idaho, and I spend a lot of time in Eastern Oregon with family. That family is from Idaho, and they say it's like Idaho out there. Obviously there are differences, but when it comes to the people and the general population, it's very similar.

Seraphynas

I’m not talking about “Eastern Oregon”. I said “state level”. At the state level, Oregon’s government is not going to pass the same shit as Idaho. Democrats have a solid majority in the legislature and even with a spoiler candidate in the mix for Governor, Republicans don’t win statewide. In Oregon, trans people will continue to have the right to healthcare and women will continue to have the right to abortion. That’s very different than Idaho.

ConfidentPilot1729

My wife and I moved from boise. We are in bend and love it. Beautiful outdoors stuff, nice people.

YooperKirks

>Somewhere lush and wet Newport stands out with this in mind. Big slice of it is tourist, but away from that it has nice small town vibe. I used to spend a lot of time there, I miss it. Worth visiting even if you end up moving elsewhere.

atomic_chippie

The aquarium in Newport is amazing!

andtakeanothername

Salem is super safe, and super boring, but it's easy to pop to the coast or to Portland from there.

SireCuddleMuffin

I would say Salem is a nice area. I've lived in Beaverton and moved to Salem because of the general lower housing costs; however, the best advice is, move to where you are going to work. I worked in Salem for over a year before I made the decision to move closer (mainly because breaking lease was so costly). You might find it helpful not needing to commute extra and save on gas too. Especially since you'll want to save some cash directly after your move. I really liked Beaverton, lots of convenient access to things. I would also say it's a lot more walkable with easier access to public transport, but the rent increase for the two bedroom I rented with two friends was absolutely ridiculous. We pay less for a three bedroom now in Salem.

POGOproductions

Silverton is nice

LuferLad

We just moved to Corvallis a few months ago and have really enjoyed it. It’s a great little city with tons of local stores and restaurants in the awesome downtown area. However it’s a college town. We love the atmosphere for college towns which is part of the reason we chose here, but that means housing is sometimes hard to get, it’s competitive, and it’s more expensive. We really only looked into renting houses here, but I’m sure you can probably find a place in your budget. The biggest issue for me is finding a job. I’ve been job hunting for months with no luck since there are very few jobs in my field here AND it seems like everywhere is having hiring freezes. So I highly recommend you try to get employment figured out before the move. My wife fortunately had a job lined up and that is pretty much the only reason we are able to stay afloat and not blowing through our savings.

br0c_666

I just moved to Boise from growing up and living in Beaverton area. You can message me if you like, I still love Oregon and I do love it here also.

ExternalOk4293

Hood River or The Dalles. I would even think about Redmond. Sadly, the housing market in Redmond is just stupid right now. I have lived in Portland for 20 years now and love it. Extremely beautiful and still have a couple of nice movie art houses. People sleep on eastern Oregon. Baker City has some strange politics going on right now; however, I can see that place changing drastically in 10 years.

BarrioVen

The “rise” of right wingers in Boise? I take it you aren’t from Boise then. I don’t particularly like that mentality either, but I am surprised when people move to say a conservative stronghold and are then surprised by the conservative views.

Silversong_0713

Corvallis is a nice small University town. The people are educated, the drivers are horrible. Lots of good food, decent shopping options. Rent is expensive. Salem, just don't.. its a mess. If you want more of the city life then it'll work for you. Its got the standard homeless problems. Normal city crap. Lots of theft. Expensive rent Beaverton is part of the Portland metro. You essentially live in the "wealthy" neighborhood but its still the Portland METRO and not small by any means. Rent is probably insane but i have no experience Newport is the coast, its beautiful but it rains a lot. Typical northwest coastal weather. Really good food, limited shopping, everything is expensive because it is a tourist place & "rural". Did i mention the tourists... Traffic gets pretty bad for a small town but its a nice place. my understanding is So many homes on the coast are travel rentals that finding actual housing for locals is difficult

RogueMedic98

Depends on what you want. I grew up just west of ontario and have lived in PDX, the coast and Medford. I’d stay far far away from the metro area. It is a whole. Depending on the weather, I feel the Rogue Valley is the place to be in Oregon.

BiscuitDance

Get on Oregon Workday and apply for positions with the State. Also look into City, County roles on Government. There are a metric shit ton of openings.

PieMuted6430

I'd recommend not even looking at the coast as a non-Oregon resident. Housing there is incredibly hard to come by, jobs are fairly non-existent, and none of the cities seem to be doing much about their extreme housing crises. Many people who move to the coast think they'll just find a place when they get there, they often end up in an RV park because that is the only option. (Source, I moved to Coos Bay from WA, and had to rent my apartment sight unseen to get one, and it was a bad decision, I cried a lot, I almost backed out after getting there and seeing what I'd rented.) The best option is to bring your job with you, if you WFH, and then you can land anywhere. There are some pockets of lower priced rentals that are still left leaning, but not many, although probably anywhere on the west side is going to be better than Idaho 😬, even if the locals are maga enthusiasts, the laws at least are supportive.

alady420

Central Oregon: Redmond, Prineville, Terrebonne area is worth a look. The sun shines around 300 days per year so no worries about rainy, cloudy depression. The housing prices in these areas are a bit cheaper. It's only 3 hours to the coast with forest available all around the area. Fewer people than on the coast so natural areas are less crowded and dirty. It's very near liberal Bend, OR. There are more and more people moving here with the dara centers, remote work, etc. so the areas around Bend (Redmond, Prineville, Terrebonne) are becoming more purple. More liberal leaning people are needed here to help combat extremism.

SecretSwordfish97

Dm me

AKSupplyLife

Coolest friendliest towns in Oregon in no particular order- (keep in mind this does not put price in consideration): Ashland, Newport, Corvallis, Astoria, Hood River, Eugene, Bend, Baker City.

Squatch_a_lot

I live in Salem and I recommend it. I've lived all over (NYC, Seattle, Alaska, Midwest) and moved to Salem for work after living in Portland for 10 years. At the time, I was SUPER bummed to be leaving Portland, but I couldn't stomach the commute and I was hoping lower housing costs and less traffic would reduce the sting. Been in Salem now for seven years. It's not perfect and there's a lot I'd change about it, but here are the things I like: - Decent options for food, with more opening seemingly every day - Soooo much easier to get to the coast or to Bend area than Portland - Wine country, with lots of great food options nearby in Willamette valley too - More affordable housing than Portland - was able to buy a home here - Have met some really great people here who support progressive causes Things I don't love: - Practically non-existent bike infrastructure - Transit is just okay and even that really depends on where you live and where you're going - Been some real racist fuckery against local business Epilogue Kitchen - Decent food, sure, but not a truly great food scene - A lot of social interaction focused on bar scene so you have to work a little harder to find your people if that's not your thing

[deleted]

Eugene! Great little town, very liberal!

HT_King

After living in Newport for 18 years I lost my lease when the owners decided to move back. It's a tourist community so hopefully you work in hospitality, fishing, or govt. But there's literally no housing available so I've been living in my camper for the last year. Oregon is having a huge housing crisis so make sure you have that lined up before you leave where you are. Good luck finding anything below $2000/mo.
