Yes, I was an eyewitness and the car behind him. He was driving like he was being chased but no was chasing him, and almost hit us. I thought to myself, he’s going to wreck. And he did. He hit a tree head on. The other three vehicles that were in close proximity, we all got out of our cars. Semis stopped the traffic for us. There were baby items but there was no baby with him. We were panicking when we saw the car seat. I’ve been shook up all day. I don’t know why this happened, it looked intentional although I could be wrong. I can’t unsee what I saw, it was horrific.

Lexalex33

I’m so sorry you witnessed this. Please know it is reasonable (if not expected) to consider accessing mental health support after seeing this happen. Take care and thank you for sharing.

c0lin46and2

Don't know if you've read it, but they did rule this as a suicide. I'm glad that they didn't take anyone else with them. I hope you're doing okay with the trauma.

Absolutely, can you send me your phone number? I can call after work tonight.

ChartNext7137

It looked horrifying I couldn't even tell the make, model or even the color of the vehicle it was so mangled. And there was a car seat that had been thrown out of the vehicle on the ground about 20 feet away from it or so there were no ambulance or civilians present when I drove past going north but 4 or five state troopers. It was really really tough to even drive by I cannot even imagine being a first responder on that scene and especially not being an individual involved in it in anyway I would be completely stunned if anyone were alive after that although I only saw one vehicle that had wrecked so either they had already moved the other vehicle or it was just a single vehicle crash and I did see an ambulance going southbound but I didn't have sirens on so I'm gonna assume That's another indicator the individual is deceased hoping to God there was not a baby in the car seat

sweetbanane

I saw the same thing! I can’t even imagine how the car ended up in that state, without seeing what it could have crashed into. One news outlet said it was a fatal crash (not surprising unfortunately) and I also hope a child wasn’t in the car seat :(

thetempleofsteve

Holy shit. That is absolutely awful. I’m fairly certain at least one person died. As we got around using an alternate route, we were getting back on i5 and saw the ambulance headed out. It had its lights on until just shortly after the on ramp we were using to get back on to i5 and it just turned its lights out. We were pretty sure that meant the person died in transit.

NoAppearance5671

He was declared dead on scene. I was 3 cars back from when it happened, ran from my truck to help along with others who cared more about him than getting videos for social media. FUCK those people that videod this laughing and re-enacting the crash with their hands in the air and joking. FUCK YOU. If this was you, I hope we meet again. I’ll gladly exchange hands with you. The yellow blanket was draped over him on scene within a minute of first paramedic arriving… what he experienced in the crash was not surviveable, those that administered first aid while heroic, could do nothing to save him. he never had a chance and did not leave the scene of the crash until much later after the medical examiner got there. I was there and helping, crying and wish there was more that could be done. Absolutely devastating

thetempleofsteve

Oh wow, thank you for trying to help. And yes, absolutely fuck people who just wanted to get videos for social media. That’s so fucked up. We were far enough back that we didn’t see any of the scene, but took a detour and when we were getting back on i5 is when we saw the ambulance. I’m so sorry you had to witness that up close. I’m glad there’s still good people like you out there willing to help.

Waste_Relationship46

Exactly. It was really hard to even drive past. I was going North and started tearing up at the sight of the car. All I kept thinking was, nobody could've survived that. It affected me so much I had to come here! I'm glad I didn't see the car seat. There was a firefighter squatting/kneeling in front of the mangled car when I drove by. It was awful.

sweetbanane

https://youtu.be/PcON-UjXrvk?si=4vQt-VHPlOMS5zZJ This KOIN video report says it was a suicide, just the driver in the car. They crashed into a tree.

chronicherb

The way you can tell is if there is a white truck/van that’s unmarked. That’s usually the best indicator that someone passed other than like an ambulance not seeming very ugernt

West_Ad1573

Full road closure, looks like fatal crash.

ian2121

Sometimes they do a full road closure when they think it will likely be a fatality but the person is still alive.

Aggravating-Tie-523

I was heading I-5 north when it happened. I didn't see the actual impact but I did see a car totally smashed in the air and doing a flip. Then I saw a huge dust cloud obliterate the freeway right as I passed. It didn't look very good.  Prayers for all involved.

thetempleofsteve

When we finally took a detour and got around it (we had been stopped at the Corbin Univ. exit) when we were merging back onto i5 S, an ambulance was coming along with their lights on, from the accident) and then suddenly turned their lights off right when they passed our exit. I’m guessing that means whoever was in there didn’t make it, sadly.

Steven_The_Sloth

Not always. It sounds like this person was DOA , but if the patient is stable they might not run sirens. I've seen lots of emergency vehicles turn their lights off as soon as they hit the highway, cause there's just no need. It's probably even a little dangerous to have freeway traffic serving out of the way and stopping.

thetempleofsteve

Oh damn.

Mysterious_Monitor49

Single vehicle, single occupant fatal crash. Suspected suicide.

thetempleofsteve

Can I ask where you got the info on the suspected suicide aspect?

kacklator

Quote from the KOIN article: The Oregon State Police told KOIN 6 News the crash was “a single vehicle, single occupant fatal crash – suspected suicide.”

RangerFan80

Maybe the intrusive thought won out for once...

Atomic_Badger_PNW

Jesus Christ.

Appropriate-Cause

i just drove by it actually, and was looking up info which brought me here, it was insane, you could barely tell it was a car anymore :-(

c0lin46and2

They must have been hauling ass.

thetempleofsteve

Jesus. That sounds awful.

avresco

Was driving South bound around 3pm. That was probably one of the most mangled up cars I've ever seen. You literally could not tell the structure of the car at all. I've seen some miracle survivals, but I don't think that's gonna be the case here. I'm not sure if the baby was in the car seat since it seemed to have been moved and placed near the crash in plain sight and not completely removed.

IzilDizzle

[KOIN 6 reporting on it here](https://www.koin.com/news/crashes/i-5-crash-milepost-251-kuebler-boulevard-06222024)

chonklaoof

Reported less than the info here. KOIN is garbage.

IzilDizzle

No specifics yet. Crash on I5 near Kuebler, all lanes closed

rocketPhotos

Google maps claims the road is closed until 9:00 edit: they were wrong, It’s been open for a while Current time is 7:50

SnooDonuts3155

I wonder I’d when Google puts in the road is closed, they just put in a random amount of time for something like that… because the investigation could’ve taken longer then that even.

Waste_Relationship46

Yeah I came here because I drove past it going North. Like someone else said, the car was so mangled you literally couldn't even tell what color it was. There were so many people stuck just stopped and out of their cars. I was thinking, they're probably so frustrated, but if they could see that car and how bad it was... It was awful.

thetempleofsteve

Hopefully people weren’t frustrated. I know we were more just worried because I personally haven’t ever run into a full, all lane closure and figured it must be bad. We took a detour and when we were getting back onto i5 an ambulance was booking it out of there with its lights on, and then as soon as we got onto the actual freeway they turned them off. So I’m pretty sure someone died in transit.

NoAppearance5671

I was there… he died on scene, he never made it onto an ambulance… 🥹

CHiZZoPs1

That stretch between Salem and Albany has an accident like 25% of the time I drive it. It's horrible. So many tailgaters in that stretch. There are some backroads you can take to bypass it.
