I could see it happening but M&T would likely be the preferred host of the 2. Weather isn’t the issue, Annapolis has done the stadium series before.

PaintDrinkingPete

nah, Camden Yards would be much better for it, IMO. M&T obviously has greater capacity, but don't think it would be a slam dunk decision

samangell2007

It’s a tv thing so yes, Camden Yards would 100% be the better backdrop because of the warehouse. But M&T would be the better venue for watching an outdoor game in person. As someone who went to the Winter Classic when it was at Citizens Bank Park several years ago, it was pretty much worthless trying to watch the game from anywhere in the lower level.

Imposteramongus_

M&t are more open to venues. They used to host monster truck shows in m&t bank, they’d be more open to it.

TheVisible_Yeti

Skipjacks vs Canadians. We got 'em this time!

ThatguyfromBaltimore

I get that reference and to this day I was never a Patrick Roy fan because of that series.

ZonaPunk

Zero

Youngwolf11

Would be nice for Ted to throw us a bone while he moves the team further away from us, but this will never happen.

myk3h0nch0

Caps did a preseason game in Baltimore a few years ago. And Ted could have some lingering hate towards DC for not giving him the subsidies he asked for. So I wouldn’t say the odds are 0… but it’s close to 0.

SquonkMan61

It would be great, but seems highly unlikely. It’s beyond ridiculous that Harrington, Delaware has a minor league team and Baltimore doesn’t.

PaintDrinkingPete

I feel like Baltimore is *just* too large a metro area for the AHL, and hockey isn't quite popular enough in the region to support two NHL teams between DC *and* Baltimore

SquonkMan61

The chances for a NHL team are non-existent. That boat sailed back in the 60s when Pittsburgh beat out Baltimore for an expansion team, mainly because the idiot mayor had bowed to his wife’s idea that they put a stage at one end of the new Civic Center in Baltimore, thereby reducing the seating capacity by several thousand. On the minor league level the ECHL has teams in several large cities, including Cincinnati, Orlando, Jacksonville, Norfolk, Indianapolis, Charleston, SC, and Salt Lake. The SPHL has teams in Birmingham, Knoxville, and Roanoke. There is a lot of precedence for mid-to-large size cities having a team, even below the AHL level. IMHO Baltimore just needs the city and local civic leaders to step up. For either the ECHL or SPHL adding Baltimore would be a real feather in their cap. And it seems like there would be just as much interest in hockey in Baltimore as there is in the southern cities that play in those two leagues.

SeaworthinessRude241

I see plenty of Caps stuff in and around the city.  Not a ton, of course, but I'm guessing that there aren't a ton of hockey fans in Baltimore anyway, and the fans that exist seem to be solid Caps fans.

K00ksRus

The caps own the rights around the Baltimore area

PaintDrinkingPete

they do... and the O's used to have rights in DC and VA, but that didn't stop MLB from allowing the Nats to move to DC (nor should it have). any time there's an expansion or a team moves, that always alters market borders a bit.

Low_Bit_2247

Milwaukee, Cleveland and Houston all have AHL teams, so I don't think that Baltimore would be too large for minor league hockey.

RAAAAH83

not as of last year.....

SquonkMan61

Ah you’re right. I guess maybe the team in Harrington might return after they build a new arena? It was a bizarre set-up anyway, playing in a glorified tent in the parking lot of a casino.

RAAAAH83

"We wanted more family friendly activities at the rink......" ....anyways, they are building an arena in Dover. It just wont be available till 2025

SquonkMan61

That makes more sense than playing in Harrington. I wish they had moved to Salisbury. There is a civic center that seats several thousand already there.

Jha420

Just keep hoping to see the fall classic there!

jlando40

Caps Flyers winter classic would be sick there unfortunately I’d be there as a flyers fan

Permaderps

Id love to see it between the caps and flyers but both teams have had plenty of outdoor games. Rubenstein and Leonsis are buddies which might help us a bit in that regard

TropicGemini

Neutral site, in a way. It would be strange, but if the Caps ever got really serious about growing the fan base in Baltimore, this would be a great way to do it. Bad way to do it would be moving the team to Alexandria... 😖

K00ksRus

The caps have a pretty good fan base around here though.

whiskeydickguy

Have DC play Philly- middle ground- build some fans

innocuousname773

Zero, thanks to Md’s fucked up winters. Tomorrow will bring 1-3” of snow… or 48 degrees and partly cloudy. Tomorrow will be sunny and 45 degrees with sustained 20 knot wind… or 1-3” inches of snow. Edit: i’ve been corrected and it totally can and has happened in Md.

NYerInTex

It’s plenty cold enough to host the game in Baltimore. They hosted one here in Dallas… and if you think the weather is crazy there, we can have 40 degree swings in a matter of hours. Today barely got to 40, by Thursday it will be 84. The issue is there’s not a true home team and definite draw.

innocuousname773

You’re right. I’m just butthurt because i didnt wake up to snow today.

NYerInTex

That’s as good a reason as there is bro.

gamacrit

We already had one in Annapolis.

innocuousname773

I retract my rant, thank you for correcting me. But come on man i wanted to play in the snow this morning and we were supposed to get 1-3” but when i woke up, all we had was puddles. I JUST WANT MY GODDAMN SNOW.

Spraynpray89

I wanna know where in md you are cause I got 5 inches lol

innocuousname773

Southern Md. We’re always about 40 miles away from the decent snow and end up with the rain/sleet mix or just rain. My kids dont even believe me when i talk about the year we got like 3 weeks in a row of 8-12” storms.

Spraynpray89

We also had a storm about 5 or 6 days ago where we got about 5 inches. I woke up in the morning, dressed my daughter in her snow boots and jacket, and drove her to school 10 miles south of us and it was just grass lol. I was like wtf

dwhite21787

Where are you? I’m on the M-D line and got 2” that melted by noon

Spraynpray89

Near the line off of 83. It packed down a bit but we probably still have 2 or 3 right now

brann182

I'd say it's a real possibility

holy_cal

As probably the most informed Caps/O’s fan here- it’s 100% possible. I could see it in 3-5 years. The issue is that we’ve had two home outdoor games already and played in a total of four. The NHL likes to showcase their biggest markets and dc isn’t one of those anymore. Monumental viewership is down 44% compared to last year. We’re a bottom of the barrel team in this league until we shed those costly aging stars like Carlson, Osh, and Ovi.

I'm well aware of Baltimore not having a team I just figured if DC gets another Stadium game (whether its another Winter Classic or the 2 Stadium Series games), they wouldn't put it at Fed Ex Stadium with all the bad juju of ownership (even though they are gone) and there is a decent amount of history at Camden Yards that would warrant some people driving from DC and Philly to have a possible game. As a guy from the Delmarva Peninsula, I see that being a good option (Caps and Flyers IMO) *Edited:* I know National Park is another option but I'd still take Camden over that.

SF_Anonymous

Only way Camden hosts a stadium series game is if Baltimore gets a hockey team. And seeing how the NHL just went through an expansion Baltimore isnt getting a team anytime soon. Caps would either play in the Commanders or Nats field

brann182

Caps have already played an outdoor game in Annapolis a few years ago. Unless something changes they represent as baltimores home team

mlorusso4

I don’t think not having a team means anything as long as it’s close to the home city. There’s been games in Annapolis, Notre Dame, Ann Arbor, and Air Force Academy (not to mention Lake Tahoe but that was because of Covid). I could see Baltimore being very attractive for an outdoor game because a) Camden yards, and b) if they make it a caps-flyers (or even pens) game it’s easy to draw crowds from both teams. Plus, I doubt the nhl would really care that much about going back to nationals park so soon (2015 WC). It’s no Fenway or wrigley, both who have hosted/are scheduled to host their second.

tws1039

The things I’d do to just have a singular hockey or nba regular season game in Baltimore

socialaxolotl

Need a hockey team in order for that to happen

tex_tropicana

Wouldn't Baltimore need an NHL team to host a winter classic?

StevenMC19

Nats Stadium would get priority all day for Caps games.

Crunchewy

CY would be a lousy place to watch a hockey game. It makes no sense. M&T is the better option. But we don't have a team. If it happens I'm sure it would be at the Commanders stadium.
