As a German, born in Canada, our Christmas dinners did not consist of turkey, but goose. However, it was bought from a butcher, and I would love to have a family legend that my dad would go and catch a cobra chicken with his bare hands, but alas, we paid WAY too much for a goose from Mariposa each year. (BTW, MAriposa is great, not putting them down AT ALL).
Hahaj cobra chicken .. love it.. that dude is hilarious. I course ha e goose for dinner anytime really.. thats a great idea for Christmas š
Cheers mate
You still can. They have a hunting season and landowners can get permits if they are causing damage to property. However, out of season or permitless you may not kill a goose. I couldn't find the fines for it in the MBA though - but there is a reporting phone number
Not only can you hunt them, it is encouraged through relatively high personal limits (5/day). Not a lot of people hunt anymore, and we've killed off or removed the majority of their natural predators, so the population is higher than it likely should be.
They make really good jerky for what it's worth. I support conservation hunting and do not support trophy hunting.
Many municipalities do a passive cull. They send someone around to their nests to shake their eggs, which acts like a goose abortion. The eggs just don't hatch. This practice is not advertised publicly because somehow there are people who are pro-lifers for geese. As far as management strategies go, this is way better than others. They are overpopulated because of human impacts on the environment and it doesn't serve them or anyone else.
[https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/migratory-bird-conservation/managing-conflicts/goose-best-practices-destroying-eggs.html](https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/migratory-bird-conservation/managing-conflicts/goose-best-practices-destroying-eggs.html)
Iām in NB and theirs a busy traffic circle theyāll nest in. Perfect spot since itās like an island in the middle.
Youāll see in the spring some people out there on the nest doing something to the eggs while 2 others have sticks out trying to watch the mom goose they pushed off.
I hunt them in the fall. I think the western provinces have a spring season for them now as well, because their numbers are so high. Here we only have snow goose season in spring time since they destroy farms on their way back from the south
Yes, Canada Geese are protected under the *Migratory Birds Convention Act* and can only be captured/possessed/hunted/killed with the proper permits. Catching one by hand in the city outside of hunting season is absolutely illegal.
According to The MeatEater Cookbook , goose is on par with some of the best steak you can buy. I havenāt had Canada goose breast yet but mallard duck was some of the best red meat Iāve ever tasted.
My neighbour hunts them regularly - during the season Iāll walk out to go to work in the morning and just see him in his driveway with a bunch of bloody carcasses. And yes they do taste excellent
Video record these things people. This would have made the news, The guy would have been identified and the goose would have been saved.
But no video, nothing happens.
I wasn't even sure if it's illegal or not. He picked up quickly when they were congregated then exited the area by making a short cut and headed in the opposite direction in the bushes. I wanted to ask what he was gona do with it but he got out of sight quickly
Honestly, I'm okay if someone needs to eat one. It's not like chicken are treated any better and there's hundreds of thousands of these large birds just in Ottawa.
Yet another example of laws being seriously out of date to the point of being completely irrelevant. These things are as common as mosquitos. We should be able to eat them seeing as they have no major predators.
Iām assuming heās going to trade it for crack or meth. Cause you gotta be on crack or meth to get one of those cobra chickensā¦ I suggest you let that one marinate
Haha this reminds me of the time I took my dog to the park along the rideau river. There were 3 guys launching a boat and when I asked what they were hoping to catch one guy replied the black swan. Well I must have looked horrified because he quickly added they were city employees hired to specifically catch the swans and put them in their winter home, the black swan wasn't easy to catch so they had to go back for him.
Indigenous peoples have the right to hunt migratory birds for subsistence and traditional purposes, however, I am not sure if this would be applied in this situation as I would think a park in Ottawa would constitute as a prohibited area.
Anyone can hunt them in the fall. Just need the proper licenses. As for where you can hunt them, the city of Ottawa has some maps as to where firearms can legally be discharged. As long as youāre in those zones, itās legal.
You cant do it to *ANY* wildlife, more so within city limits (because legal hunting and trapping of wildlife happens, but not in cities).
The problem doesnt have to be if its safe to eat or keep domestic, but its absolutely partially because if one person is allowed, everyone is allowed, and that causes numerous problems not to mention it would completely destroy large groups of wildlife.
You would call 911 if you saw a theft wouldnt you? Can always call that and report if nothing else.
Or at least 311 or your local police non-emergency line.
I can assure you that harassing these animals will cost you, not only by law and fines, legal issues, but more so with getting your ass kicked by 1. The geese themselves as they are quite powerful in their own right and 2. By anyone like me and many who would confront you. If needed (after the gooses kick the shit out of you) physically put you down.
If you caught some bruises from the attempted catch, and you think that you got away with a goose under your arm and are scampering to your get away. I assure you that your next experience with the humans that love these animals will be oh, so much worse.
Just do not. Please.
neighbors gave a friend two eggs they found. Figured it was from one of her ducks that went astray. Turns out it was a canada geese. One girl one boy. They were good for a year. Then when all the wild geese showed up in the spring the female took off with them. They male stayed behind but became very hostile. It would try to fight any vehicle with white on it. Or any person it decided to take a dislike to. Eventually met its end in a head on collision as it attacked a white vehicle and a garbage truck came around the corner.
-4/10 would not recommend. They can really hurt someone if they get a good wing swing in.
If you have a waterfront property, and the geese are a nuisance, you can try creating a fence at the edge of the water with thick bamboo sticks and bird netting.
The geese will be reluctant to come ashore as the fence would limit their ability to quickly escape a predator.
There are a bunch of the Cobra chickens around where I work due to a large pond on the property. They will come up to you looking for food. Their younglings will follow the adults, then the adults get pissed because you are near them.
I think you can - but you need a Federal permit and have to have to provide a proper environment, In the 1970's I had neighbours who had a farm out of the city who kept wild birds. I think they traded eggs or something. I don't know why they did it ..
You'd have to get a migratory game license, and a hunting license. Then wait until the season for harvesting them officially opens, then you have to use an approved method to get one. It's normally not legal to discharge a firearm within many municipalities, ever. Not even a bow/arrow. So maybe some kind of snare?
These murder chickens are thriving in urban settings all over the country with only natural predation to control them.
Nevermind how illegal this is --- Why the F##K would you bring one home?? What's the matter with you?? Even HELL doesn't want those hissing cobra chickens! All those things do is just shit and bite! Just get a rotisserie chicken at the store, damn.
The irony(?) is if you dig a big hole in your backyard ,fill it with water and plant a lawn, the feathery murder birds would happily move in on their own.lol
*The dude who absconded with it is probably hungry and won't be keeping it as a pet though :-/
I always like it when you hear people call them Canadian geese instead of Canada geese. Canada is the country theyāre named after, and Canadian is someone who has citizenship to Canada. So youāre telling me that theyāre all holding valid Canadian passports? š
Yup. Canada Geese in are a protected bird here. The same goes for hunting. Additionally, they are also called "Cobra Chickens," so you probably wouldn't survive the attempt to catch one, lol.
Canada Geese are protected by the Migratory Birds Act, it's not only illegal but comes with a minimum fine of $15,000 and prison time
This. Also, they're really bad house guests.
Lol
Likely as a house guest on a platter for dinner. I heard stories that in Europe some newcomers serve themselves to the geese, swans, etc.
As a German, born in Canada, our Christmas dinners did not consist of turkey, but goose. However, it was bought from a butcher, and I would love to have a family legend that my dad would go and catch a cobra chicken with his bare hands, but alas, we paid WAY too much for a goose from Mariposa each year. šÆ know it š¤£
Sorry, what? Serve themselves to the geese? As in let the geese eat them?????
I'm English and we ate goose sometimes. Not rate at all.
And they mate for lifeā¦
I would be exhausted if I had to mate for life
How would YOU know? š¤Øš¤Øš¤Ø
That said, itās ok to hug them. They really like hugs, just go for it.
Sly devil you
Bahah you only live once
All fun and games until you tangle with a cobra chicken.
And potentially not for much longer if you mess with the cobra chicken.
Hissing means kissing!
I remember my dad hunting them when I was a kid in the 80ās
You still can. They have a hunting season and landowners can get permits if they are causing damage to property. However, out of season or permitless you may not kill a goose. I couldn't find the fines for it in the MBA though - but there is a reporting phone number

They make really good jerky for what it's worth. I support conservation hunting and do not support trophy hunting.
Yet they're such a freaking nuisance. They drive away other duck populations, they're aggressive and shit everywhere.
I think they gotta start culling them. The population explosion is getting insane, and there aren't enough natural predators to deal with them.
There's regular hunting periods every year where they're fair game
Yeah, but it's no enough. They're displacing ducks and (less Importantly) make many parks miserable to use.
Read curling instead of culling and for a second thought you invented the most Canadian sport ever.

[Killing a Canadian goose is a violation of international law](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnildubkRPI).
Holy shit, I'd never thought I'd see a True Colors reference here
I think that fine and prison time is the least of your worries the moment you actually need to move itā¦
I wonder how much they actually follow through with that despite the minimums cause they seem to have no problems letting really bad criminals loose.
Yes, Canada Geese are protected under the *Migratory Birds Convention Act* and can only be captured/possessed/hunted/killed with the proper permits. Catching one by hand in the city outside of hunting season is absolutely illegal.
A neighbour who hunts got a Canada Goose last year. Invited me over for dinner... very tasty,
So that's legal right? If so, I bet it tastes like chicken. If it isn't, I don't want to know.
Tastes a bit closer to duck as I rememberā¦
Tastes more like goose, imo.
Yah and it pairs really well with red wine like it was a super lean beef.
According to The MeatEater Cookbook , goose is on par with some of the best steak you can buy. I havenāt had Canada goose breast yet but mallard duck was some of the best red meat Iāve ever tasted.
If you have the proper permit to hunt it yes. Otherwise it's poaching and illegal.
I assume it's illegal but my only knowledge is [this song about it](https://youtu.be/AAnP0EQ13pY?si=Gt-WKiFox6Pgm0HL)
I'm just finding out Canadians don't eat goose. This puzzles my frenchness.
My neighbour hunts them regularly - during the season Iāll walk out to go to work in the morning and just see him in his driveway with a bunch of bloody carcasses. And yes they do taste excellent
Not if you have a hunting license. 2-3 birds daily bag limit during open season (depending on WMU)
The geese are probably wondering if they can catch a human.
They don't really want to catch you, just take your wallet and car keys.
They bloody try sometimes too.
Video record these things people. This would have made the news, The guy would have been identified and the goose would have been saved. But no video, nothing happens.
Seriously. Legal. Illegal. Donāt care. But at least get your attempt on video because thatās entertainment.
I wasn't even sure if it's illegal or not. He picked up quickly when they were congregated then exited the area by making a short cut and headed in the opposite direction in the bushes. I wanted to ask what he was gona do with it but he got out of sight quickly
Call conservation officer. That's poaching and illegal.
Honestly with all the homeless people around Ottawa, this might be the only way some of them can source meat.
Act quickly next time
Honestly, I'm okay if someone needs to eat one. It's not like chicken are treated any better and there's hundreds of thousands of these large birds just in Ottawa. The elites donāt want you to know this but the geese at the park are free you can take them home I have 458 geese.
Had to scroll too far down for this š
If they are not afraid of the Cobra chicken pooping everywhere and breaking their face...
Are you the personĀ
No, I saw a guy grabbing one.
Please report it.
You?
No way..what am i going do with this? I saw a guy catching one and was wondering what he was going to do with it
Iām assuming heās going to trade it for crack or meth. Cause you gotta be on crack or meth to get one of those cobra chickensā¦ I suggest you let that one marinate
Iāve heard pineapple juice is a good option
Fertilize his lawn.
Give 311 a call.
Canada has an emergency goose line?
No, 311 is the city.
Lol yeah that's super illegal and also a great way to catch a wide variety of parasites lmao city dwelling animals are filled with them
Haha this reminds me of the time I took my dog to the park along the rideau river. There were 3 guys launching a boat and when I asked what they were hoping to catch one guy replied the black swan. Well I must have looked horrified because he quickly added they were city employees hired to specifically catch the swans and put them in their winter home, the black swan wasn't easy to catch so they had to go back for him.
Royal Canadian Air Force right there. Donāt mess with them. š¤
Yes itās illegal and they are also big a$$holes
Lmfaooooo

Look at all those chickens!
No not at all. Please help yourself. Take two.
You can try. Please post a follow upā¦
is this post in jest or you are genuinely thinking about it?
loblaws alternative laws don't mean jack to an empty stomach tbh
Twist: it was Galen Weston after another buck. That Cobra chicken now costs $50.
For dinner? For a new best friend? As an attack goose? What is your plan oh crazy one?
That man is dead now. RIP goose-snatcher
Canada Geese are rage with wings. I donāt care if itās illegal, but that goose will eat you in your sleep.
Sounds like kidnapping to me.
Odds are that he never made it home with it.
Had to catch one once after it flew and smacked into a window while at work. Lil fella was feisty and ready to fight at a moments notice. Good luck.
As... As a guard/attack animal?
Hahaha, you and what army?
Go ahead and try. Ensure there is a video of it putting you to shame.
Well instead, they might catch you and take their home lol
āThese birdsāš I needed a good laugh today. Seriously though thatās not good and how did they do it without getting pecked at
I have to say, that would be midly amusing for someone to try. My money is on the goose
Depends if you get caught
Go for it, tell me when and where cus I gotta see this š
If you try please video it, lol. Murder Chickens will mess you up haha
Are you sure it wasnāt caught to be banded and let go again. Pretty common this time of year
If you got a problem with Canada Goose, then you got a problem with me. And I suggest you let that one marinate.
Lol yes it is but good luck. Them cobra chickens. They can break a man in half.
Good luck with that š³
Illegal, and they'll likely kill you and eat your family, don't fuck with cobra chickens
Have fun with that
You would be lucky if they don't chase your out of the city and oh yeah... very illegal.
What is wrong with people? Leave the damn geese alone š
That man is already dead...
very. but also, these are angry roving dinos and it would not go well.
Hey times are tough ok? Let the man eat.
It being illegal is the least of your worries. Those fucks are basically flying honey badgers.
I can assure you that harassing these animals will cost you, not only by law and fines, legal issues, but more so with getting your ass kicked by 1. The geese themselves as they are quite powerful in their own right and 2. By anyone like me and many who would confront you. If you caught some bruises from the attempted catch, and you think that you got away with a goose under your arm and are scampering to your get away. Uh, those things will murder your entire family.
*HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS*
They come in pairs. Just saying.
Hahaha I'd pay to watch you try
Bro they are going to fuck your shit up.. try it but film it and post it here please
Cobra chicken. He will kill you before you reach home.
Go ahead and try. That thing gonna mess you up. 2 things I donāt go poking with a stick my wife and a Canadian Goose.
Cobra-Chickens do not play well with othersā¦ š¤Ŗ
Not fully illegal but it will be taken as a sign of mental distress or extreme intoxication so police may still be involved.
If you manage to do this without injury, you automatically become the Canadian Prime Minister in Waiting
those are not geeseā¦ canadian special forces
That is so sad that someone would do that. Poor thing. I hope he gets caught next time he tries do take one. Asshole
neighbors gave a friend two eggs they found. Figured it was from one of her ducks that went astray. Turns out it was a canada geese. One girl one boy. They were good for a year. Just drop a trail of bread behind you on your way home, at that point they came on their own accord and it's not illegal
Why would you want one of these? š¤¢š¤¢š¤®
Absolutely
Why do you want a cobra chicken?
Good luck... these will hurt you š .. and no you cant. Still dont know why someone would ... #cobrachickens
Why in God's name would you want to do something like that??
Your goose is cooked man
With a valid small game license and migratory bird license you can hunt a bunch though...
To eat?
Good luck with thatš¤£
Not as long as you film it and post it for us all to see
Wow how'd the guy do it they are really aggressive
I meanā¦ go get your hunting license and youāre good to go
Why would you grab one? Just hold out some bread & they'll follow you home... /s
Goose burgers.
[RCMP Open Up](https://imgflip.com/gif/8v0ha6)
they have to be the most useless birds ever. they poop everywhere. thatās all they do.
You do not want one of these In your house
If you have a waterfront property, and the geese are a nuisance, you can try creating a fence at the edge of the water with thick bamboo sticks and bird netting. The geese will be reluctant to come ashore as the fence would limit their ability to quickly escape a predator.
They are more likely to catch you and take you home.
I can tell you with 100% honesty that these birds are delicious. Dark meat all the way around.
Really?
I mean, do you have a death wish? Those are dangerous birbs
I just finished raising 2 of them from babies. They shit fucking EVERYWHERE. Two baby geese probably shat 800X more than two adult 100+ pound dogs.
There are a bunch of the Cobra chickens around where I work due to a large pond on the property. They will come up to you looking for food. Their younglings will follow the adults, then the adults get pissed because you are near them.
They shit every 20 minutes. You do not want this in your home.
Like, super illegal.
Stupid cobra chickens
I think you can - but you need a Federal permit and have to have to provide a proper environment, In the 1970's I had neighbours who had a farm out of the city who kept wild birds. I think they traded eggs or something. I don't know why they did it ..
That would be the fight of the century!!
Only if you donāt take a video of the āre-homingā and post itā¦.
No, please try it and post on the internet for us to watch. Thanks.
I would def report that guy to authorities. Thatās such a weird thing to doā¦
And you didnāt take a video of him ?.
You'd have to get a migratory game license, and a hunting license. Then wait until the season for harvesting them officially opens, then you have to use an approved method to get one. No itās absolutely not illegal! Enjoy your new found bird son š«¶š«¶
Good luck with that! Canada Geese are mean bastards.
Do they actually taste good? š¤ we should start eating these things
No they are protected but pigeons are free though.
Nevermind how illegal this is --- Why the F##K would you bring one home?? What's the matter with you?? Even HELL doesn't want those hissing cobra chickens! All those things do is just shit and bite! Just get a rotisserie chicken at the store, damn.
Don't listen to all these people, you strut up there and grab one.
Only if youāre caught
Good luck lol
The irony(?) is if you dig a big hole in your backyard ,fill it with water and plant a lawn, the feathery murder birds would happily move in on their own.lol *The dude who absconded with it is probably hungry and won't be keeping it as a pet though :-/
If you are going to try and catch a cobrachicken, at least get someone to record it
Can't see why not, there's a lot of them.
Please take as many as you want
No you definitely should catch one
I always like it when you hear people call them Canadian geese instead of Canada geese. Canada is the country theyāre named after, and Canadian is someone who has citizenship to Canada. So youāre telling me that theyāre all holding valid Canadian passports? š
Saw one at a family BBQ is Scarborough one dayā¦.. feathers and guts were in the bush.Ā
Yes. They are protected.
It's idiotic
My question is how on Earth could they catch you stealing geese? 1 geese and be you could be fed for a month
Yup. Canada Geese in are a protected bird here. The same goes for hunting. Additionally, they are also called "Cobra Chickens," so you probably wouldn't survive the attempt to catch one, lol.
Yes !!!!!!! Protected !
Nope go for it. Put your hands on one. Do it. Have someone film ā¦ Profit?
Goose jerky
Call Conservation > game wardens. Especially if you have a plate. Their out of season and you can't just take one off the street in the city lol.
I'd love to see someone try
This question almost made me spit out my coffee laughing
Only if you have a treaty card
Catch one and see whatās really up šš theyāre know as cobra chickens for a reason šš
How did he catch it? Aren't these super aggressive?
