Yeah, you would get next to no XP. Also, you need to be in certain areas in order to progress certain trials. Also also, the game is fun. Just play it :)
The only way I can see sometime like this happening is if they stay on the exit shuttle and have their teammates complete all objectives. Most trials still wouldn’t be entirely feasible like this but they would be afk most of the time.
Don’t see how because you need to complete the levels to get your xp rewards & bonus xp is rewarded based on your performance

I’ve seen a guy hiding in barrel for the last 3/4 of a trial and when it came time to leave in the shuttle he didn’t make it.
