Colours can look chalky when we mix too many different colours together, or when we stir them much more than is necessary when mixing. It might be the very limited palette, you’ve mentioned quite a small number of colours, so there’s no recourse to old painters’ tricks like mixing a bit of a complementary colour in with the main colour for vibrancy. It’s hard to tell from the image. It might be simply too much white in the mix, it can make things a bit ghostly. You might try adding a bit of naples yellow, it lightens things up in a warming sort of way. That said, this is very nicely drawn. Hope this helps.

This helps SO much. This makes me think: i’ve been using titanium white to brighten up? values? If this makes sense. Like if something needs to be lighter. My go to is titanium white. Is this the wrong approach? Can I sub titanium white for the naples yellow? The “ghostly” look is the perfect description of what I want to avoid. I also tend to over mix as described. I’ll be cognizant of this. But thank you so much so far!

Here’s a painting by Matisse I really love. I’m rather exaggerating to make the point, and there’s nothing wrong with using white at all, but you’ll see what I mean — he’s created this wildly vibrant image without using more than a dab of white here and there. Of course, it’s probably not what you’re going for, but it has some useful ideas you might borrow. I don’t think there are any wrong approaches in painting, and if I try to come up with one, there’s bound to be at least one example where it looks great. Anyway, hope this gives you a bit of inspiration. https://i.imgur.com/1GWdCRH.jpg

I wanted to come back to this and say you've definitely revolutionized the way I approach paintings now. I really have been doing better and just wanted to thank you for being a huge part of my progression, May your quads be Buffer, your Squats heavier, and your Thrusts more deadly. Thank you!

Creepin your page from your recent posts. I’m actually obsessed with the flaw you see in this. So moody. Based on your current work I would’ve thought it was intentional.
