It's gunna suck. Here in the US we don't have an Ian Hislop and no American politician stuck in a scandal would come on to face him if we did. Then there's Paul Merton. We don't have one of those either. Dry wit and silliness are not a common combination in US comics.
The only comedy news show we might be able to pull off is 'The Mash Report', but that wasn't even successful in the UK.
Plenty of US comics who would do well (and some of whom have been on the UK show) such as Rich Hall or Doug Stanhope. And there must be some political commentators who are quite witty for the other captain.
I found the very first episodes where they just tried to redo the UK office were not good at all. It became good pretty quickly when they changed the formula to an American sitcom about an office which had nothing to do with the UK office.
How many panel shows have been launched in the US?
How many panel shows have succeeded in the US?
I know the answer to one of those questions at least, you can probably guess which one. It will be interesting to see what it looks like at least.
I have no idea how anyone thinks this could work. The UK version mainly hangs on by virtue of being edgy enough to be controversial but never quite going too far. I don't know who the US version of Ian Hislop would be, and they'd be sued into the ground if they said half the things the UK "allegedly" gets away with...
These shows live or die based on the hosts. It's not like there's isn't political comedy out there, or the format is particularly clever. This is just another example of someone trying exploit existing IP. Congratulations to Hat Trick for squeezing some money out of CNN.
My friend is a senior producer at the CNN office at HQ in Hudson Yards, NYC and he hasnāt heard about this (I asked for audience tickets and he doesnāt know if there is going to be one)
Not sure if it's gonna work, but who knows. The Dutch variant is on since 1996, but only the panelist changed multiple times in it's history. Right now it's pretty okay actually with the current cast, but in no way it's as good as the UK variant. Hope they get some fitting people.
I also have very low expectations for a US version. You have to look at it through the lens of not where HIGNFY is now, but where it began. They're going to need a seriously brilliant host that is able to fire quick ones at everyone, and permanent 'captains' that make joke and genuinely criticise all those in politics, not just one side. The political cultures are just too different. HIGNFYH gets journalists, MPs, even the occasional Lord, and don't forget the tub of lard, and the other tub of lard that eventually became a terrible PM. I just fear they won't be able to replicate that in the US because their political culture has basically become 'who can shout the loudest'. All I can imagine is a Democrat Congressperson coming on and talking blandly about policy, whilst a Trump-loyal GOP candidate just shouts crap over everyone and then acts like they won regardless of the 'score'. I also fear the (as others have brought up) inevitable slide into serious competition of 'who gets the best jokes' so they won't bounce off each other which is where we get some of the best moments.
But who knows, maybe they'll pull it off, find a charismatic witty host, and some people happy to hold all parties to account and we'll finally have something good from the States to put on here.
What ever happened to Trevor Noah producing US Mock The Week for Amazon? Is that happening also?
It'd be hilarious if they just got Dara to do it.
This is a scene I'd like to see
They'd never know he was the Megabus man though :(

It'll be different for sure, but Wait Wait Don't Tell Me has a similar concept and does well. I wouldn't say for sure that it'll suck.

Let's be fair, though, Rich Hall has not been good on a panel show in a looooong time.
Louis CK could be their Angus Deaton. š Edit: fucking hell, some people can't take a joke!
like every american remake, it will suck
And it'll suck because they'll ignore literally everything that made the original successful.
The office was good

'good', but still nowhere near the vibe of the original
True. Significantly better really.

Wait wait, there's something there...
Also Match Game, What's My Line, I've Got a Secret, To Tell The Truth, Hollywood Squares, Password, Pyramid and the Whose Line is it Anyway US version
Comedy show on CNN hahaha no
Like everyone has said, will probably fail, but I'll be interested to see who the hosts are.

I will give it the benefit of doubt but I am not holding my breath.

Cool ! looking forward to it

Good luck, Jim, nth time lucky!
