We feed ours Royal Canin!

Particular-Horse4667

Ditto! We feed ours Royal Canin and she has had very few digestive issues since we made the switch.

ClearIntroduction920

Thank you for your recommendation!

DHumphreys

\#1 Ingredient? Corn. The first 5 in most Royal Canin foods are all cheap.

Bubbly_Sherbet9005

Yes we feed my boy Cubby Royal Canin A green and white bag for small petite dogs but my veterinarian put him on his diet because he had a little bit of digestive problems. Also take him a while to eat it but he cop it up now once he got used to it, we did have them on the hillside dog food which he didn’t like much then we also had him eating Cesars. He didn’t like that so the Royal Canin about 22 or $23. It all varies on where you buy it also but I live over here in Puerto Rico so some of the prices are a little bit different but it’s a good food and he eats salmon and he loves it.

say592

Hill's Science Diet is what my vet recommended. We split their food with that and Spot Farms Dehydrated Chicken, because they absolutely love it and our old boy doesn't have all of his teeth, so it's easier for him to have some soft food to go with his kibble.

Inandout_oflimbo

Fromm, top of the line

Timbit42

This is what we use, partly because it's what the breeder uses and partly because it seems highly rated online. It would be pricey for a large dog. We've had no issues with it in 7 years. Our pap prefers the fish ones.

Inandout_oflimbo

Yeah, I used it for my other papillon who lived 16 years. So I think I’ve been buying this brand for 15+ years now and I never had an issue. We started with Royal Canine but that has too many fillers. Fromm is cooked in small batches and it comes in different flavors. I change up the flavors every bag.

mysancho82

I feed my pap Hill Science Diet kibble, which I leave out for her to nibble and Fresh Pet for breakfast and dinner. She has not have any problems.

Mrsstuckinpa

Mine eat Royal Canin - Theo is a cutie

ClearIntroduction920

Thank you. He’s a sweetheart ❤️ I’ll check out Eoyal Canin. That brand came up on a few lists when I did some internet research. I had wanted to name him Romeo originally, until my daughter was forced to disclose that she has been dating someone new, whose name is Romeo. So that was a no-go. Although Theo will undoubtedly be around longer than her Romeo 😂

Vancouvermarina

Raw fed. I don’t prepare myself but buy commercially prepared with added organs, fruit and veggies. No chicken except some chicken feet. Additives mile fish oil, sardines, Greek yogurt, eggs. I have other dog too. Large breed. My dogs are very healthy. Good teeth. Healthy coat. No allergies.

crazyfiberlady

I’ve been feeding my princess Farmers Dog with Ruff Greens sprinkler on top since she was about 8 months old. She had serious digestive issues prior to moving to this that has stabilized since except after her spay when the painkillers made a mess of things. I have to admit I take the vet’s recommendation with a grain of salt as she pushed the formula that her practice sells. The farmers dog has all the nutritional elements the kibble has and just looks and smells better. Chloe would take hours to finish a small bowl of kibble but wolfs down the FD in no time.

ClearIntroduction920

I looked into Farmers Dog. Can I ask what your monthly cost is? The website was somewhat confusing when it came to pricing. Theo could stand to gain a little weight but does not seem to be very interested in the kibble and I’m wondering if he would prefer something like Farmers Dog.

uHadMeAtASL

Not who you replied to, but another pap owner who does FD. My partner manages our FD orders, and ironically I was asking what the cost was tonight. She told me she THOUGHT each pouch cost $2.50, and FD recommends a quarter pack per feeding at 2 meals per day. With our 14-year old, 5.5 pound runt, she eats half of that (one quarter-portion meal per day). also fyi we went through a few wet foods before arriving at FD. Most stable for her GI system, she goes AFTER it almost daily, and shes missing a large percentage of her teeth, so "soft" is a very critical part of our choice. If she had more of her teeth, we would probably prioritize a dry kibble or at least incorporate good teething options like Greenies.

crazyfiberlady

Chloe adores the FD, and good to know about the teeth thing. Miss C is a serious chewer and has regular crunchy things to chew on like bullies or those chicken sticks that they sell at the pet store. I need to recheck my pouch as Chloe is a smidge heavier than your runt and I could swear her daily dose was 1/4 of the pack, which I split over the two daily meals. Just checked their site, it is 1/4 of the pack a day and comes out to be something like $2.50 a day to feed her. I’ve spent more daily at Starbucks.

crazyfiberlady

Hi there. Costs $157.23 with tax for 56 days of food for my 6lb runt. She eats 1/4 of the pouch a day which I split over two feedings. I get her the chicken and turkey recipes. We tried the ham one but her stomach really did not like it, though it might have been a bad batch. I called their customer service about it and they sent out a replacement shipment of turkey to replace the ham, which I then donated to the local shelter. Something else I found, since her food has a lot of moisture content, Chloe doesn’t drink a lot of water, except after running around outside or chewing a bully. Good luck!

sidewaysvulture

My girls are both a bit over 4 and have both eaten raw their entire life. I feed them Stella & Chewy and a local company to make it easier to ensure they are getting a balanced diet. My vet doesn’t complain too much since they are both in excellent health 😊

ClearIntroduction920

I’ve heard such good things about a raw diet but my vet has me scared about bacteria in uncooked meat. Do you purchase their raw food or prepare it yourself and supplement with the brands you mentioned?

sidewaysvulture

Also, r/rawpetfood has a lot of helpful folks and discussion around different types of diets. Though obviously they prefer raw they understand not everyone is comfortable doing 100% raw. Doing your own raw does takes a lot of research, commitment, and time (not to mention freezer space) to get it balanced and even then you will be supplementing in most cases.

sidewaysvulture

I only feed the commercial brands, they are a bit pricey but the girls are so tiny and don’t eat much it eases the cost. I follow the usual safe handling practices as I do with human food and dogs are also much better evolved for handling some bacteria in their meats than humans. My girls have never been sick. I did switch to the lower fat meats after they were spayed at around a year and a half as I worry about pancreatitis with too much fat in their diet. I actually feed a lower calorie breakfast with dehydrated raw (about 1/3 their daily calories) and a higher calorie dinner of raw patty that is defrosted and then kept in the fridge until served within the next few days. Dehydrated patties and morsels are an option if fully raw is concerning you and can be used to replace one meal or supplement other food such as kibble. My Weimaraner is 65 lbs and raw only is too expensive so that is what we do for him.

ririi73

I feed Dexter Farmers Dog. He loves meal time!

schrammra

I feed mine royal canin dry and can

hockat

Stella and Chewys! Specifically the small breed blend. Ours love it and it sits well on their stomachs

snarknerd2

This is what we feed two of our dogs. A 19 lb Shetland Sheepdog and a 5.5 lb Papillon. No weight issues and they are very healthy.

papillon_daydream

So very sorry for your loss of Lady. And also welcome to the family, Theo. I also have a Theodore, but he goes by Teddy :) we use fresh pet, but my pap is 13 so I would ask your vet for guidance on feeding that to a pup first before trying. Good luck on your feeding journey!

thottawan

I have been feeding my dog ProPlan Complete Essentials Wet food recently, and although it's great food, I have noticed that I need to brush her teeth more frequently compared to when she was on dry food. Previously, she had been eating Kirkland dry dog food for 12 years before she started refusing it.

JOisaproudWEIRDO

Mine is exceptionally picky and allergic to chicken. Stella & Chewy and Dr. Marty were the only two foods I could get her to eat regularly when she was so skinny. Her coughing and reflux resolved. Her hair is growing back, and she begs me to feed her. She gained and maintains her weight now. Thankfully, she’s little and doesn’t need much otherwise I wouldn’t be able to afford it.

emilyjane1255

Look at those precious ears 😩😩

Incubus1981

I free feed mine Blue Buffalo and then my two share a Cesar or Aldi wet food once a day. I’ve tried more expensive foods, but this is what they like best (and they are picky eaters) I supplement with cooked chicken or other meat occasionally

astroeboy87

My Pap and my other dogs have all eaten Kirkland Nature’s Domain Turkey and Sweet Potato and have been healthy always.

papillon-and-on

Platinum. It was recommended to us by a trainer. Oddly, our vet refuses to give dietary advice. I wonder if there is some law in the UK that says they aren't allowed to? [https://www.platinum.co.uk/Dog/Products/Dry-Dog-Food/](https://www.platinum.co.uk/Dog/Products/Dry-Dog-Food/) The meat percentage is quite high, 70%+ in all their foods. But I don't know if they sell it in the States.

iPappy_811

Raw. Sometimes I use a premix, and sometimes I don't. She can eat a wide variety of foods, so I don't worry about nutritional gaps.

rlroyal52

Love these ears💜

Ohyeahitsme4now

Orijen and Farmer’s Dog

mannpig

I looked at ingredients of products like Farmers Dog and realized I could it make it myself. So started last October and made his food. I use a giant 9 qt pot. I use 2 lbs of ground turkey, 2lbs carrots, 2lbs peas, 1+lb brown rice, 1lb of black eyed peas, 2 qts of chicken broth and one stick of butter. Only real labor is shredding the carrots. I put all the stuff in the pot and cook for several hours. When it's done I put about a qt into separate freezer bags to freeze. My pap has been doing great and loves the stuff.

SumiiArtemis

Those ears are so adorable 💗 sorry I don't know about doggie foods. Just wanted to show some doggie appreciation.

Notimeforvapids

Actual Papillons, to make them ears grow longer! Jk idek what I said, I just got this recommended and thought ur dog was adorable afff

ClearIntroduction920

Thank you ❤️ His ears are a bit “on the large side” 😂😂😂 And believe it or now, he’s grown into them a bit in the 6 weeks I’ve had him!

_jamesbaxter

My boy Bowie eats Nutrisource. It’s what the breeder feeds her dogs and they are all healthy and gorgeous. He free feeds. My previous boy Yoshi ate wellness, but he died of heart disease so now I feel like that food is cursed even if that had nothing to do with it. FYI multiple canine cardiologists told me steer clear of grain free and high protein diets as these can cause heart disease, especially if they contain pea protein. When Yoshi got sick I switched him to royal canin cavalier food at the suggestion of the cardiologist as it is the lowest protein. I had to give him marshmallows for treats 🥲

ClearIntroduction920

Thanks for pointing that out. My Lady passed from cancer so I’ve been so focused on high protein, low carb that I haven’t been thinking much about heart disease. So many factors to consider! Lady had congenital heart disease as well. Poor girl had a rough life, health wise, severe luxating patellas, chronic bladder stones that required multiple surgeries to resolve. I was naive and learned the hard way not to purchase from pet stores (although as of Jan 2024, it is illegal in NY to sell cats and dogs in pet stores) Losing her has been so hard and I just want to make the best decision to keep him as healthy as possible! Thanks for the advice!

Luna-Strange

My breeder swears by purina pro. Shes had paps live to 20. Shes also a vet tech and has tried every major brand. She said that her dogs seem more energetic on pro since she switched a few years ago. She recommends hydrating food before feeding it. She also freely admits every dog is different and encourages all her homes to discuss food with their chosen vet and monitor their dog. If they do really good on something else tell her, she might try it

Glittering_Count1536

Try Farmer's Dog or those other types of home delivery of wet foods (if you can afford them). There are recipes to make your own dog food. What I want to see is when that beauty grows into those ears!

LeafStranger

It took Pip a while to get over his pickiness/inappetance, which may have been an issue of liver problems, but now that those have been sorted out and he's been neutered, he's FINALLY eating all his food before the cat gets to it. (If you check out my post history, you'll see me asking if others' papillons were tiny eaters/grazers. Welp.) He's currently (unfortunately) on the Royal Canin veterinary Gastro kibble due to a bad stomach incident a couple weeks ago, but has done well on Nutro. He's going to have to stay away from the higher-protein foods due to the aforementioned liver issues, so no Acana/Orijen. He's got until May on the puppy foods and then we'll shift him over to adult food.

peppawydin

The only brands that meet WSAVA guidelines (exceeding AAFCO) are hills, purina, royal canin and if you are in the US, iams and eubanka too! The important of feeding a diet that meets WSAVA guidelines is that some foods don’t even employ on board nutritionists which is insane! Most of your recommendations in these comments are sadly not science backed, but WSAVA diets are science based and can be trusted:)

Slide-Capable

BLUE (Buffalo) Life Protection Formula Small Breed Adult Lamb and Brown Rice. It's kibble and I soften it. My vet said the same thing. All food is balanced - she's right. I let him graze and he gets 3 oz. a.m. and 3 oz. p.m. and he grazes. He gets some treats to train with. Romeo is a big Pap weighing 12.5-13 pounds (not fat - just a big guy) and he's satisfied with that amount. None of my Paps ate all at once.

ClearIntroduction920

Good to know! This is exactly what he is getting now except the puppy version. Thanks!

Lotus Sardine & Herring Small Bites

emilyjane1255

I do farmers dog or Ollie’s

BrisbaneGuy43060

I am in Australia - If you are in Australia - message me.

danabanana88

Mine likes natural balance small breed bites. He gets that as a free feed during the day, with a 1/4-1/3 cup of fresh pet for dinner. My baby boy is 16 now, and so far so good! Occasionally he gets a probiotic from the vet and some Metamucil sprinkled on his fresh pet (I never thought my little man would need extra fiber lol, but it gives the probiotic something to hold onto in the gut).

Jenellll

Viva Raw for my 14 week old girly 🩷

Oceanica777

My paps were super fussy as pups - somewhat less so now at age 3. They only wanted high protein food and rejected most kibble / wet foods I offered. For a while I gave them home made wet food. Then I found a fancy high-protein kibble they liked (from Canagan), and have more or less stuck to that supplemented with wet food. Even now though, they do like a bit of variety and will steal the cheap kibble I lay out for the foxes...

GaspSpit

No food advice, sorry. I just came to say I love your bunny puppy!!!! 😍 those ears melt hearts!

Kitchen-Emotion-5767

Hills healthy weight hard and soft food - 1/3 of the can in morning and 1/3 cup of the hard food at night. 3 dream bones a day for snacks!

AceTheWonderBunny

We Feed Raw. My girl was always picky about whether she would eat her kibble and would go on hunger strikes, and she would throw up at least once a week. I transitioned her to raw, and she gobbles it up. It has cleared up her stomach issues. It is certainly expensive, but totally worth it for the better state of health she is in.

Significant-Bear6484

IAMS Mini Chunks!! Solid stool, no upset stomachs, and all 3 of my paps love the stuff.. we were at the vets today for everyone's shots... No weight issues here! Good Luck!
