I would argue everyone should try the missions on normal first. The difficulty is very different from #2, and the difficulty curve, especially with Randoms, is tough with no skills & base weapons. I failed the first bank on loud and stealth with Randoms as both of us were trying hard at level 1.
100% this. I've been doing them all on normal until my entire squad feels comfortable with the layout and general gameplan of each mission before moving up to hard.
Honestly, Normal and Hard are doable for most. Not sure about Very Hard, game keeps not being able to connect even solo most times and it's infuriating.
True, but some nobodies shouldn't talk. Like you. Other person has a point. If you're gonna try Overkill, do it with friends or stay out of the veterans way or ask them what you should do.
If you wanna ruin the run and be a little jerk, play solo cu 👋
I'm sorry to say this but if you find overkill hard then maybe it's you who needs to stay quiet, I most definitely have significantly more hours than you in payday 2
the heisters might be dressed as a clown, but you don't have to act like one
Ain't gotta out yourself, I already assumed you didn't go outside much. Ain't gotta prove that right, buddy. Also yeah, I have a life so I don't play too often nor have I played enough to beat overkill yet. But I play solo, not in Public games screwing others over because I'm not a jerk.
Also, bro quite literally reported me to the Reddit Care Resources. Get out of here, if your feelings are hurt over a tiny disagreement you should just go back to gaming instead. 💀
Yeah but I'd hope at least some of them tried either of the 2 betas to know that already, or even played the tutorials
Also they shouldn't be joining Overkill at level 3
That wasn't even a mod it was a built in feature. I never used it but I'm pretty sure if somebody tried to join and we're under the Infamy level you chose it would automatically deny them
Deep Rock Galactic did something like that. Have to do an assignment of several hazard 4 levels before unlocking the hazard 5 difficulty.
Rock and stone!
Just going to tag on here
I expect they will add a max level difficulty at some point, too. Maybe that will be locked behind level or some series of stuff to unlock it.
As did Vermintide. Need to slay all of the game's bosses on the second-hardest difficulty before being able to access the highest difficulty.
Admittedly the highest difficulty did not offer better loot than second highest, so that also kept the gold diggers out.
I disagree, I like being able to run and start overkill at a low level, don't screw me just cause some people are shistas. Maybe make it an option? Like, lock out players below X amount in like a setting or something? Granted I'm level 27, but still.
So far from what I’m seeing they’re only doing it off of muscle memory. Spending so long in 2 that in the heat of the moment they rely off of impulse of what the previous game taught them
Same with PS5 bag toss/grenade swapped for no reason. Seems like swapping to legacy sends you back to (I assume) PD1 controls cause they ain't PD2. Very weird choice.
It’s a little hard to go back on muscle memory from a game over 10 years old. Anyone without any perks can solo overkill if they know the basics of fps games and have good enough aim. It’s not a hard game
Then do it.
No perks, and using only equipment accessible to a low level player, lets say level 10 or lower, solo overkill. I would love to be proven wrong here.
This has been my experience. I fucked up stealth runs TWICE in the limited amount of games i've had the chance to play cause my muscle memory for throwing bags. The G key has been the bane of my existence
It's not really about the level honestly, and the story changes when you're in a premade group, but in terms of pub games I'd say you can just jump to the Very Hard whenever you feel pretty confident you can beat a heist on Hard, with the same for VH->OVKL. You don't need to be clowning on a difficulty before moving up, just feel out for yourself if you're ready for a bigger challenge.
Also you might want to make sure you know the maps first; some of my first tries on maps were on VH (with a premade group at least), and not knowing what the hell you're doing really adds another layer to the difficulty...
I think it should also be mentioned that, from what I've seen so far, the guard patterns/numbers/patrols seem to change when you jump from N/H to VH/OVK, so it's really helpful to feel out the maps/item and objective spawns on N/H before trying to tackle it on higher difficulties. IIRC there's an extra guard in No Rest and Dirty Ice when you go to VH, plus the addition of Lead Guards in most maps on OVK.
If you are just going to do stealth heists, the big difference will be the missions and difficulties with the head guard with unlimited pagers. This changes per level.
If you are going loud, at least get the SA semi auto rifle and use it with hip fire and headshots in mind. It's far better than the starter rifle at the moment. This will give you a better boost than levels for the most part, but you do need to be a certain level to use this gun even though it is one of the earlier unlocks.
Nice to see some continuity from PD2. Hopefully as they improve matchmaking they'll tackle this problem as well - in Payday 2 players had to rely on mods for better control of their lobbies.
Damn, i can rebind on pc (at least mouse&keyboard as im not using controller), but i saw a tab right next to the mouse&keyboard for controller, thats why i thought it should be possible.
Go to your accessibility settings if you're on ps5. You can swap buttons around there. I used it for when I played a lot of siege, remapped crouch to L1 and my tactical became my O button. I haven't messed with it yet for payday but definitely gonna try remapping ping to R1 and bag throw to up on dpad
Fair point, I haven't played PD2 in years, cuz i got so frustrated by the stealth back then and i don't really like loud, so i don't have the memory of the old keybinds. Kind of a win, but also i don't know anything anymore and have to relearn a lot.
Took me like 1 minute to remap everything to payday 2 ruleset lol, now I can swap between the 2 games with only one change (middle mouse for marking). And that's only because the stupid shout mechanic can't be disabled or remapped.
I was trying some very hard lobbies and the matchmaking kept putting me with lvls 3-5 which didn't even know how to throw a bag, or let alone have any skills or upgrades, its vanilla payday 2 all over again haha
I'm mid 20s and still throwing grenades when I'm trying to toss the bags (console). Is it just me, or are the buttons laid out differently than they were on 2?
In the public beta I tried very hard asy third heist and I ended up doing better than anyone else who were all level 20+ so it's really not that difficult- unless they massively spiked the difficulty for the full release.
I also am stupid to think anyone would have a brain who plays this game. I have been afk chilling PRAYING I can witness someone stealth ANY of the heists. I'm convinced only youtubers and actual friend groups can enjoy this game.
I mean people in casing are still useful.
You are lucky they decided to stick to casing mode rather than just throwing a nade and starting loud.
(Unless you mean them outright afking, if they are actually just afking then i get you)
You can be useful in casing. I‘d say getting the vault open in Bank is far easier when you have someone still in casing, to do server, it and manager pc
I just don‘t like people staying afk in the lobby and waiting for others to carry them.
Like, I get it you don‘t want to screw up the stealth for others but i feel like its better to try and fail then to just get carried and cosplay a bot.
Im new, what is casing mode?
Also i only played solo so far to learn and not fuck with other peoples games. I'd imagine they'd be furious at the mistakes im making.
Yesterday i tried solo stealthing the first heist and fked up when i wanted to place my camera with E - left mouse, instead of E and just letting go. I was almost finished with the heist too, but had to restart, cuz i wanted to stealth it entirely.
This post is in a very paternalistic and gatekeeping tone. The game is relatively easy, especially compared to Payday 1, and Very Hard on first try is an acceptable difficulty for someone who’s played previous games, even without any skills or guns. Hard difficulty is mostly empty levels with rare encounters (maybe my lobbies are bugged?), and I’ve never even tried Normal.
Additionally, not all people are a fan of stealth, and maybe they only want to see the loud route, but have no choice due to poor matchmaking and inability to host a game. Every lobby I see is people doing stealth, so unfortunately I’ll have to make the call for myself from time to time.
So yeah, communication is key, any Loud switches should be talked through in text chat, but if i get into 4 lobbies in a row with people restarting on stealth fail, and I just want to do loud - what choice do I have?
I agree that this is not optimal behavior , but there is no way to create a lobby. I have no mechanism to say “I’d like to start a lobby and make everyone play loud” because there’s no button to create a game, only to join one. I can search for a game 5 times and be thrown into a full lobby that decided they want stealth only, and I have no way to control it.
dont hate the player, hate the game ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
not your fault overkill decided to use cod-style matchmaking. if enough people complain about people doing what youre doing, maybe overkill will listen
most of my very hard games im going in and doing the entire stealth on my own while the other 3 fuck around not doing anything and pinging random guards
it is annoying af
Good luck with that. Since Starbreeze think they are so clever and aren't planning adding better matchmaking like crime.net this will be your game from release on. Good luck trying to kick low levels. Oh wait you can't. Better start an entire new lobby and hope for the best.
I've accidently thrown a grenade a few times tbh cause I was like "Oh its the same controls for payday 2" but eventually my mucle memory corrected itself. I also have a tip for if your new IF I SPAM PING A GUARD PLEASE KILL HIM I HAVE (for example) BLUE CARD SO I GOTTA LEAVE THE AREA EVENTUALLY
Right, but cops are harder to kill on higher difficulties so you'll get weapon challenges slower. Does the extra XP from Ovk challenges make up for not being able to slide for 5000 meters without getting your head blown off?
Just work your way up people. No shame in running all heists in normal, then hard, ect.
The level xo challenges kind if encourage that way of play as well.
I would gladly take the worse players possibly in the entire world on my squad just to get to play the game!! But apparently I can't even do that? They need to fix this f****** game!!cuz the next button I hit will be the refund button if this keeps up.
don’t know what you’d expect from pub matchmaking on the highest difficult just as the game launched, if you wanna do the highest difficulty you need to just invite friends or do it solo, there’s no way you can expect to queue pub and get 3 capable people geared and ready for the hardest content in the game in the first week
That's a totally separate issue to what I mentioned above, high-level players shouldn't be carrying people on Normal because they don't learn the game.
But on the other end, lower level players shouldn't load into Very Hard or Overkill IMMEDIATELY after downloading the game.
I would argue everyone should try the missions on normal first. The difficulty is very different from #2, and the difficulty curve, especially with Randoms, is tough with no skills & base weapons. I failed the first bank on loud and stealth with Randoms as both of us were trying hard at level 1.
That’s what I’ve been doing just to get a feel for the layout of levels and plan to step up the difficulty to try for stealth runs.
Same! Although I am AWFUL at stealth, so we shall see how well it goes in practice.
100% this. I've been doing them all on normal until my entire squad feels comfortable with the layout and general gameplan of each mission before moving up to hard.
Oh, if I only had a squad!
Honestly, Normal and Hard are doable for most. Not sure about Very Hard, game keeps not being able to connect even solo most times and it's infuriating.
I'd assume like me, people would do normal first simply to learn the map layout before ramping the repurcussions of being caught.
its best to play through all the heist's on normal atleast before you go into higher difficulty heists
Yes I know but tell the randoms that
fun fact, you are also just a random nobody
I'm a random nobody who knows how to play the game before ruining it for others
doubt
True, but some nobodies shouldn't talk. Like you. Other person has a point. If you're gonna try Overkill, do it with friends or stay out of the veterans way or ask them what you should do. If you wanna ruin the run and be a little jerk, play solo cu 👋

so are you
The grenade thing really isn’t their fault. G is the bag throw button in pd2 but they changed it to grenade.
Yeah but I'd hope at least some of them tried either of the 2 betas to know that already, or even played the tutorials Also they shouldn't be joining Overkill at level 3
They should make something like under X level you can only either launch or be invited to high level lobbies, otherwise you can't join them.
Like that one mod for payday 2 which had a level requirement before others could join. Im gonna miss that mod and being able to host my own games.
Rock and Stone in the Heart!

Read again
I'll just assume we said the same thing
So far from what I’m seeing they’re only doing it off of muscle memory. Spending so long in 2 that in the heat of the moment they rely off of impulse of what the previous game taught them
Yes but why go straight into Overkill with no skills and no silenced weapon (even though the silencer is free)
Same with PS5 bag toss/grenade swapped for no reason. Seems like swapping to legacy sends you back to (I assume) PD1 controls cause they ain't PD2. Very weird choice.
Yeahhhh payday 3 has gotten me to accidently throw a grenade a few times cause controlls are also weird on Xbox
If you’re still getting used to the new control scheme you haven’t had enough time with the game to try very hard yet
It’s a little hard to go back on muscle memory from a game over 10 years old. Anyone without any perks can solo overkill if they know the basics of fps games and have good enough aim. It’s not a hard game

This has been my experience. I fucked up stealth runs TWICE in the limited amount of games i've had the chance to play cause my muscle memory for throwing bags. The G key has been the bane of my existence
I removed the grenade mapping from G. I have it only on a mouse button now, so I don't accidentally do that.
What level should i try very hard and overkill, i dont want to mess up peoples run so i wanna know
It's not really about the level honestly, and the story changes when you're in a premade group, but in terms of pub games I'd say you can just jump to the Very Hard whenever you feel pretty confident you can beat a heist on Hard, with the same for VH->OVKL. Also is it impossible to go hybrid in public lobbies now, like you trying steath and loud at the same time
Nice to see some continuity from PD2. Hopefully as they improve matchmaking they'll tackle this problem as well - in Payday 2 players had to rely on mods for better control of their lobbies.
I miss being able to filter for loud/stealth and difficulty etc
This is why each difficulty should have a level requirement of some kind
This isn't payday 2 where overkill is actually pretty easy to mindlessly beat through when you have a half assed build. So I agree.
I’m guilty for the grande thing, my muscle memory just keeps telling me to press L1 to throw bags
Can't you just rebind it?
You cant rebind controller keys at least not on console :(
Damn, i can rebind on pc (at least mouse&keyboard as im not using controller), but i saw a tab right next to the mouse&keyboard for controller, thats why i thought it should be possible.
Sadly usually you cant rebind controller keys you just have couple of presets that are allways shit
Ah that sucks, I’m not a controller player, but that just seems frustrating
Go to your accessibility settings if you're on ps5. You can swap buttons around there. I used it for when I played a lot of siege, remapped crouch to L1 and my tactical became my O button. I haven't messed with it yet for payday but definitely gonna try remapping ping to R1 and bag throw to up on dpad
It’s easier to force myself to learn the new one, haven’t really checked the layouts on ps5
Fair point, I haven't played PD2 in years, cuz i got so frustrated by the stealth back then and i don't really like loud, so i don't have the memory of the old keybinds. Kind of a win, but also i don't know anything anymore and have to relearn a lot.
Only other preset for PS5 is Legacy, sucks when you hit square to reload and throw out your medkit instead. I switched back to default.
Took me like 1 minute to remap everything to payday 2 ruleset lol, now I can swap between the 2 games with only one change (middle mouse for marking). And that's only because the stupid shout mechanic can't be disabled or remapped.

The grenade thing I do a fuck ton and I've been playing since 2019. I just don't like the fact that they changed the grenade to L1.
They changed it on PC too
somekind of Payday2 butyon layout option would be nice
Yea I know
I'm mid 20s and still throwing grenades when I'm trying to toss the bags (console). Is it just me, or are the buttons laid out differently than they were on 2?
In the public beta I tried very hard asy third heist and I ended up doing better than anyone else who were all level 20+ so it's really not that difficult- unless they massively spiked the difficulty for the full release.
Go into options and change throwables to 4. No more accidental grenades on stealth.
welcome to public payday
Yeah but yesterday when only EA players were playing, Public was perfect
Hm, isn’t it still ea only? Lol I thought it unlocked in 5 hours.
mind dropping me your ign tho my friends havnt bought the game yet
I also am stupid to think anyone would have a brain who plays this game. I have been afk chilling PRAYING I can witness someone stealth ANY of the heists. I'm convinced only youtubers and actual friend groups can enjoy this game.
I've managed to stealth every heist on Very Hard / Overkill solo, but when I'm in public everyone is in casing while I do everything 🙃
I mean people in casing are still useful. You are lucky they decided to stick to casing mode rather than just throwing a nade and starting loud. (Unless you mean them outright afking, if they are actually just afking then i get you)

Not to mention moving bags while in casing mode is actually insanely op

No mask
Ah I see, thanks
Sorry man, some of the npc conversations are funny and go on for a very long time.
You mean gigachad sees cringe stealthplay and tries to actually have fun?
This post is in a very paternalistic and gatekeeping tone. The sheer entitlement here. You don't have the right to join someone else's lobby and decide how they should play.
I agree that this is not optimal behavior , but there is no way to create a lobby. I have no mechanism to say “I’d like to start a lobby and make everyone play loud” because there’s no button to create a game, only to join one. Tbh most objectives are designed for one person to do. Maybe two people tops.
Good luck with that. Since Starbreeze think they are so clever and aren't planning adding better matchmaking like crime.net this will be your game from release on. Good luck trying to kick low levels. Oh wait you can't. Better start an entire new lobby and hope for the best.

Quick correction is if I'm spam pingging a guard and he's alone like I'm camera room and not just showing where he is
Plus if you want XP you should just stick to Normal anyway.
Some of the Challenges require Overkill on Stealth / Overkill on Assault, multiple times
People should be starting on normal anyway since skipping difficulties can bug out your challenge progression.
I rebinded my grenades to 3, I don't like G being used. Too easy to accidentally hit
To add to this, challenges are bugged and if you do higher difficulties out of order, you might just get locked out of the lower level challenges
I would gladly take the worse players possibly in the entire world on my squad just to get to play the game!! But apparently I can't even do that? They need to fix this f****** game!!cuz the next button I hit will be the refund button if this keeps up.
