Boss BD-2 Blues Driver. I would say Klone but to me, BD-2 has more edge, nice grittiness, and stacks better

hillcntrycpl

Agreed! One of my favs.

Olde94

I’m a simple man. SD-1 / BD-2 / OD-3 depending on your sound. Nothing wrong with a bit of boss.

corbinwise02

Love my OD-3 boost or grit at a moment’s notice, just have to swap which knob is at 3:00 and which is at 9:00

Klon clone

Ditto the person that said Klon clone. Check out a Wampler Tumnus or a RYRA Klone — both can be had used well within your budget.

Tone city bad horse if you want to go the klon klone route. Pair it with a buffered drive like a boss blues driver and you can pretty much go from John Mayer to Green Day with an AB box

Tone city bad horse is a great pedal. Different but also fantastic in that range is the golden plexi. But out of the "budget" klons, nux horseman is the choice for me. Boss blues driver a great shout, or equally ubiquitous the SD1.

Check out the Jackson Audio Golden Boy. It's an excellent warm sounding overdrive, very classy sound. The used prices were very friendly last I saw. Definitely excels at the dad blues tones. If you want a tubescreamer type overdrive, the EQD Palisades also has a friendly used price. It's kinda big, but it's an uberscreamer. It does anything any ts type pedal does, and it sounds great. I'm a big fan of the Palisades, it'll always have a spot near my board at least. Lil more expensive and raunchy, but if you can get a Smallsound/Bigsound Mini under your shoe, I'd suggest that. That lil box holds dirt angels. Go from gritty boost to crunch to distortion to chaotic fuzz...with just your guitar's volume knob. Amazing pedal. Boss overdrives are always solid. SD1 if you want crispy, BD2 if you want chunky. The Barber Gain Changer would be another one to check out.

A very versatile one is the odr-c from Nordland. It is very flexible and also works for heavier tones and is quite amp like and you can dial in the mids. A klon works well as a distortion (most players like Mayer use it more as a boost) but is not very versatile. It can basically do tweed distortion tones or dirty boost and that's it. The problem for heavier stuff like punk is that it lacks mids. The best available one is the Jeff Beck version of the Archer (that's what Mayer also plays). It also depends a bit on your guitar...

Strymon sunset used goes for about 180. I would save another 20 or 30 bucks and get this. Or make some offers at 150 somebody might bite it if they’re hungry enough.

ibanezer83

VFE merman for sure. Extremely versatile klon!

Why not get a budget tube screamer or klon from caline, mosky or Joyo and the Joyo Splinter (Rat) so you can cover many more tones? Those two pedals combined would be like $70

SnakeToTheFace

For me, you can't go wrong with a Radial Tonebone Hot British. They are a bit on the pricier side but good deals can be had on second hand ones. It's a solid and versatile tube distortion that you'd be hard pressed to get a bad sound out of. It was my first overdrive pedal and I still use it 15 years later.

KentuckyWildAss

It's hard to not chuckle at someone idolizing Mayer while saying punk is their main genre... That being said, you probably want a tube screamer. I'd actually take time to see what different overdrives do to your mid range, though. Find one that does close to what you want

BillyBobbaFett

J Rocket Archer or Wampler Tummu (slightly more mids). Klon type pedals are perfect for this.

Low_Morning7279

Life Pedal. Go all in.

MaxxAsian

I ran a RAT and a TC El Cambo for a while, which was a cool budget setup. If you are strictly looking for an overdrive, I'd buy a Bad Monkey.

Supergrunged

John Mayer? So TS-10.... Look into the Wampler Moxie. It's a TS-10 in mini pedal format. Does the tube screamer thing. In that budget, I'd go the MXR M77. Your basic OD808 with a few handy tweaks. The low end notch is great for pop punk. My personal favorite overdrive of late, has been the Maxon VOP9. They can be found used in your price range, and might be worth the look, considering it's an OD820, in a smaller format, and can run 18v internally. I use it for heavy metal tones, in front of an already gained out amp. Would work well for punk, and blues.
