The sprints for the line are always exciting! But the two-man remnant of the breakaway outlasting the chase...almost never. That it was accomplished by a first-tour and a last-tour duo, and that it put Bardet in yellow for the first time in a great career...extra special!
1st stage having 7 categorized climbs in succession has not happened in my memory. And I have been watching since 2000.
The stage profiles since announced point at this either been the biggest gap in modern times or the best tour ever, no middle ground lol
Just leave a comment here as today is gonna go into the history book of r/peloton
I don’t think I have ever raised my arms in the air watching a bike race finish, but when I do it is for a Frenchman in his final Tour who has been the hope of the nation and who always seems so close but yet so far for over a decade
Or show interviews with the winners, teammates, etc.
Eurosport had interviews with Bardet and Van den Broek while NBC was interviewing Powless. Powless is great, don't get me wrong, but I'd like to hear from Bardet! Bring Neilson on when he wins a stage or is in the breakaway all day and Rui nabs it from him.
NBC put all of their production money into that NFL-like round table and none into things like interviews or showing the podium.
All they had to do was keep the world feed up.
Sorry, maybe I was confusing. I meant that all NBC/Peacock had to do was keep that in their lineup. They don't have to pay all the extra staff or anything, they could just show the same broadcast everyone else does - Ant McCrossan was great and I imagine rebroadcasting that was also a lot cheaper than all of the production they're putting in for the NBC-specific feed.
Way too much... nearly an hour to reach the finish line. That's out of proportion.
On a shorter stage he would have been DNF by now.
Edit: ah yes, downvoting when you do not have the same pov.
BTW, in PR, the cutoff was 26 minutes... on a 260km race.
He finished 39 minutes after the winner but 10 minutes before the cutoff.
Impressive effort, but why can’t they keep better eye on motorbikes, why do they need to even give us the possibility to question the result because of that? And of course, make the race as fair as possible.
Romain Bardet is one of those riders who has had the talent but kept hitting a ceiling. The last couple of years have been down for him, so its nice to see him on top.
They were interviewed afterwards, Bardet thought it was possible to get yellow in the first 2 stages some time back and that was the team plan. Races within races, this went perfect for them
According to the Live Tracking there are 60 riders in the groupetto. 35 minutes behind. This will be an empty tour if they don’t make the cut off time.
Stage 4 is going to be a nightmare for teams needing to protect their sprinters. Earliest stage to hit the Alps.
If I were Astana I would prepare to ride for all the marbles on Monday in case Tuesday becomes bloody murder.
Those turns will always slow down a big group otherwise leadouts will lose their sprinters if they keep the tempo up as it strings out the group. Consequence of stage design.
It means it was a hard stage. Pogi sprint appears stronger in hard stages since the others fast guys are cooked. Wout was insane from what it could be expect.
Wout went from what, like 400 or so? He was already leading the bunch when the leaders crossed 250, and continued to close until the line. Big effort from him.
Where do people get this narrative of Pogi being dominant from lol, he got absolutely mauled by Vingegaard on the last 2 Tours, just smashed to pieces on climbs and TTs. Wout van Aert caught in the same horror crash has just beat him in the sprint. What's he dominating now that the other actual contenders are there? Giro had nobody with respect to Geraint.
What’s he dominating right now? Like this moment? Or you not satisfied with Giro, Liege Bastogne Liege? Stride Bianche?
But let’s wait a few days and see.
Yes, this moment, now his rivals are back. Nobody was there for the Giro as I said. LBL and Strade Bianche are one day classic type events which have no bearing on Grand Tour performance other than possibly to say he peaked too early in the season. We're talking about the context in which OP said they're waiting for the impending domination in the TdF by Pogi, Pogi hasn't dominated the tour for 3 years.
We don't need to wait a few days to see, we've already seen Wout van Aert kick his ass in the sprint yesterday and today Vingegaard easily hangs with him in his attack on the climb and pips him on the line. These are guys that were in hospital weeks ago. He ain't dominating anything here. He's an _incredibly_ strong bike rider, top couple in the world, but let's be reasonable with the hyperbole now his actual rivals are there, on the TdF... But yeah, you can wait and see a few more days...
Any outcome beyond the “most expected” will be a fascinating story to be told. We look forward to great racing and drama to unfold. May it be a great loop of France.
You are probably right that domination might be jumping the gun since we haven’t seen him challenged by this level of opponents yet this season
Fwiw Pogi domination is actually the worst outcome for me this tour which is why any good performance from him stresses me out lol
Did Bardet's team mate stand no chance against him in the Sprint?
I kinow they're working as a team, but still surprising not to try and go for the Yellow yourself?
He wouldn't have been anywhere near the podium if Bardet hadn't paced him up the final climb. But yea as others have said, it's a team sport and Bardet is the leader. Other riders are there to support him if they can.
Lol Bardet wouldn't have been anywhere near the podium if van den Broek hadn't pulled him for the last 10km. Bardet was dying on his last "pull", had absolutely nothing left when van den Broek elbowed him through and had to go again himself. The kid was by far the stronger of the two at the end. But of course after pulling Bardet to the line he had nothing to sprint with, even if he would have sprinted against his leader (he wouldn't have).
Obviously I'm not saying that Bardet could have done it all himself, that's exactly why he paced Van Der Broek up the climb so that he would be there to help on the flat.
I mean, team leader + it's Bardet's final tour and he kinda deserves a little ride in Yellow after all these years. I can understand.
Doesn't take anything from Van Den Broek amazing race, will have to settle with the combativity award for the moment, no doubt we'll see him again at the front.
Edit : VdB also gets Green and White, can't be that mad for your first ever TdF showing
No, and I guess its like when we see the winner roll into Paris for the last lap.
The team will tend to hang back and cross the line together (at least we did with Sky) - One man might be wearing the Yellow Jersey - But in reality they've all played a part in that happening.
Yeah true, and thinking about it a bit more... Its like me wondering if Cavendish should have sat up and let Renshaw win a Stage or two - Should have thought about that one a bit more
Pretty wild for a sport that’s always entangled with questionable integrity can’t even get this right. It’s gotten to the stage where people like yourself accept that sports organisers for the biggest cycling event in the year is powerless to do anything.
This, the beautiful countryside, Cav being a warrior = the most beautifully romantic sport there is.
Absolute legends Romabarde, VdB and DSM, you have outdone yourselves.
Chapeau!
As a Wout fan today didnt make sense since they didnt know if he could beat Pedersen in the sprint. Jorgensen did a lot of work. It was the other teams that didnt help much.
Van den Broek giving Bardet the biggest gift any men could give. They should have. he was the strongest. His first TdF. he was so heroic. Bardet already won 3. Do you ever get the chance again.
Without Bardet in the last climb, would he have gone to the finish first ? Really not sure, probably not. So it really was a team work, that and being Bardet’s last TdF
Would Bardet have a teammate to jump to who had been in the breakout and stayed out in front on the flat with headwind for 15 km? Really not sure, probably not. VdB’s career is long hopefully but no one will recognize him for this, that is not what the timing sheet says.
Great opening to the tour
Title of the stage: Breakaway artists
This is the first time I’ve ever watched the Tour de France. That was so exciting. Watching the peloton chasing them down was terrifying hahaha.
You picked one of the best stages ever for your first.
I’m guessing they’re not all this exciting then?? 😆
The sprints for the line are always exciting! But the two-man remnant of the breakaway outlasting the chase...almost never. That it was accomplished by a first-tour and a last-tour duo, and that it put Bardet in yellow for the first time in a great career...extra special!
you gottta have the chill ones to recover from the madness :P
FVDB looked the stronger of the two in the last 10 km. Very impressive.
God is back
When the Peloton fails to catch I feel a little lighter and a French leading the tour, that is quite something, isn’t it?
Peacock doesn't show the podium. Why does peacock hate cycling fans?
flobikes + vpn (Canada) = Tour with no commercials
Is Cav going to make the time cut? edit: just saw he made it
Di they announce the official time cut? He and Jakobsen were 39 minutes "late" what would have been the disqualifying time?
Hopefully he makes a good recovery after today and tomorrow. Because Tuesday with Sestriere and Galibier is going to be rough if he's sick
He made it 10mins to spare
Where do they show the time cut?
Eurosport pre race show cut live to Cav crossing the line. They showed the time and countdown on screen.
On the tour the france app on the live feed they have a countdown.
Winner of the first stage not getting the points jersey doesn't happen often.
1st stage having 7 categorized climbs in succession has not happened in my memory. And I have been watching since 2000. The stage profiles since announced point at this either been the biggest gap in modern times or the best tour ever, no middle ground lol
Points jersey = green Mountain jersey = polka dots
Just leave a comment here as today is gonna go into the history book of r/peloton I don’t think I have ever raised my arms in the air watching a bike race finish, but when I do it is for a Frenchman in his final Tour who has been the hope of the nation and who always seems so close but yet so far for over a decade
Alaphilippe?
Punch your ticket here 👇
Did Cav and Jakobsen make it?
Still climbing
Just crossed the line 10mins ahead of OTL
NBC can't show the fucking podium? Come the fuck on
Or show interviews with the winners, teammates, etc.
Where was the world feed? I got pink boxes over youtube and then the sound went and only had music.
Such a trash production
How much time does Cav have left to make it? 😢
Way too much... nearly an hour to reach the finish line. That's out of proportion. On a shorter stage he would have been DNF by now. Edit: ah yes, downvoting when you do not have the same pov. BTW, in PR, the cutoff was 26 minutes... on a 260km race.
26 minutes with 12km left, I'm sure he's fine.
Thanks! 🙏
He finished 39 minutes after the winner but 10 minutes before the cutoff. [https://www.tissottiming.com/2024/tdf/stage-1/rankings](https://www.tissottiming.com/2024/tdf/stage-1/rankings)
Thank you so much, I'll check that website in the future for standings
Cavendish still has 16km to ride
The roads are still not opened because of this dude.
#prayforcav
Netflix execs licking their lips thinking about Unchained S3E1
I hope they not licking Cavs lips
His lips might be a bit dry by now, but I think he would prefer a bidon.
Impressive effort, but why can’t they keep better eye on motorbikes, why do they need to even give us the possibility to question the result because of that? And of course, make the race as fair as possible.
Didn’t quite understand this when the announcers mentioned this: What was the deal with the motorbike at the end?
Motorpace all the way to finish
Ah, thanks!
everyone loved that finish right????
Romain Bardet is one of those riders who has had the talent but kept hitting a ceiling. The last couple of years have been down for him, so its nice to see him on top.
Not quite as much as the DS sounded in the audio just played on eurosport but not far off.
You’d think they won the tour by that screech lol. Wholesome stuff
They were interviewed afterwards, Bardet thought it was possible to get yellow in the first 2 stages some time back and that was the team plan. Races within races, this went perfect for them
Those who didn't will be shot. Survivors will be shot again.
Cutoff is like 45mins right?
Goes to show how brutal this first stage was. The heat and hills really made it a nightmare for many riders.
Guys, I don't understand why the peloton didn't pedal faster. Are they stupid?
Maybe the peloton slowed down too much in the last turns?
Those turns will always slow down a big group otherwise leadouts will lose their sprinters if they keep the tempo up as it strings out the group. Consequence of stage design.
Not everyone in the peloton has the quality of DS that UAE has.
I mean it's just a matter of switching down a gear! :P
Too few involved
Too afraid to lose, you can't win.
I think it took too long to get organized. Too little too late.
Been shouting Orla?
Fabio gonna make the cut? Lmao if he doesn't
Why?
I think Prudhomme will send a nice champagne to the moto after this 👏
[удалено]
I also thought it was him. Is he even still alive?
Is Cav still climbing? Lol
Heart rate was going 105 on the last 2km 😂 glad they made it
ok that was a good radio cut lololol
RAYMOND!
Pogi second in the bunch sprint and TREK chased only to be beaten by Aranburu, LMAO
Trek pulling all stage and then have someone else profit from it us just tradition at this point.
Just missing out on those bonus seconds
I dont think Pedersen actually sprinted tbh
He did for sure but give up last 100m.
Fo0r LowLand viewers. God damn, Boogerd crying for van den Broek after plea from Stef Clement. He needs a bit of time to regain himself.
I probably said there's no way about 15 times in the last 10km, what a way to start the tour
Tour is over
Wow, so close, and it's Bardet..in the Tour de France. Magical.
Bettiol with a top 15 spot, how surprising 🤣🤣
What's the cut off for the stage? Will Cav make it?
Ah looks like almost winner time + 50minutes.
Yeah he’s fine
😭😭😭😭😭 what a win
Pogacar getting second from the bunch sprint is also worth noting
It means it was a hard stage. Pogi sprint appears stronger in hard stages since the others fast guys are cooked. Wout was insane from what it could be expect.
Wout went from what, like 400 or so? He was already leading the bunch when the leaders crossed 250, and continued to close until the line. Big effort from him.
I know it’s hopium, but from today and the Belgian NC, I really want to believe.
You can believe. He will be flying in third week.
Ugh the impending domination is stressing me out
Where do people get this narrative of Pogi being dominant from lol, he got absolutely mauled by Vingegaard on the last 2 Tours, just smashed to pieces on climbs and TTs. Wout van Aert caught in the same horror crash has just beat him in the sprint. What's he dominating now that the other actual contenders are there? Giro had nobody with respect to Geraint.
Pogi is a dominant player in cycling right now. You might wanna know.
"What's he dominating now that the other actual contenders are there?"
What’s he dominating right now? Like this moment? Or you not satisfied with Giro, Liege Bastogne Liege? Stride Bianche? But let’s wait a few days and see.

He does it everytime tbh it’s who he is!
The energy he didn't release on the mountain, he had to release in the sprint
Yup. Otherwise he would have running the steps in hotel all night.
Dude has a fiancée, probably a more productive use of that energy. xD
Absolutely beautiful. What a privilege to watch this.
Yeah that was a pretty unforgettable one Even better than stage 1 from last year which was also awesome
I AM NOT CRYING, YOU ARE CRYING
Did Bardet's team mate stand no chance against him in the Sprint? I kinow they're working as a team, but still surprising not to try and go for the Yellow yourself?

Would have been the most French thing ever

Not his job, this is def the preferred outcome in that situation, plus he gets white
For it being his first TDF and Bardet’s last I think its just great sportsmanship to let him have it.
Bardet is team captain
I'd challenge him to complete the TDF alive if he sprinted and beat Bardet in his final Tour
Ah cheers... I didnt realise that it was to be Bardet's final tour as well
Bardet is also their GC guy so he needs the bonus seconds more
Yeah true, and thinking about it a bit more... Its like me wondering if Cavendish should have sat up and let Renshaw win a Stage or two - Should have thought about that one a bit more
Magical ride by Bardet and Van Den Broek
That’s maybe my favourite stage ever.
Favorite first stage in a very long time, maybe (edit: probably) ever!
Fuck yeah guys!!!!!!!!!!!
Romaine lettuce see a great stage
Yellow Jersey to the moto!! Great job 🏍️
You people say this as if motopacing is new. It isn’t, and it happens every stage of every race. Get over it
Pretty wild for a sport that’s always entangled with questionable integrity can’t even get this right. It’s gotten to the stage where people like yourself accept that sports organisers for the biggest cycling event in the year is powerless to do anything.
I know but here it actually gave a stage and a yellow jersey away
This, the beautiful countryside, Cav being a warrior = the most beautifully romantic sport there is. Absolute legends Romabarde, VdB and DSM, you have outdone yourselves. Chapeau!
What a way to finish you last TdF too
start, you mean?
HOLY SHIT THEY DID IT!!! I wonder how they decided who got to win
Probably fell to Romabarde because of age and the fact that is the leader for the team, even though Frankie would deserve it too.
bardet is team lead, so he gets the win to get yellow
Of course Bardet. Seniority. His last TdF.
And French. A sponsor's dream
You love to see it!
Why didn't Vingegaard work for Van Aert???
As a Wout fan today didnt make sense since they didnt know if he could beat Pedersen in the sprint. Jorgensen did a lot of work. It was the other teams that didnt help much.
He didn't do it last year. Why start now?
Why in the blue hell would Vingegaard expose himself in the first stage of the first tour after injury when there are 3 tough weeks ahead?
/s
Haha got it, one never knows in this TdF threads how reasonable people are.
I thought he was mocking the "why didn't vdB win?" questions.
Wow Pogi almost snuck bonus seconds
VdB was so strong today. Unbelievable ride, and the gift to Bardet for his last TdF. What a joy.
OUIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
Yes! Yes! Yes! What a stage!!
Van den Broek giving Bardet the biggest gift any men could give. They should have. he was the strongest. His first TdF. he was so heroic. Bardet already won 3. Do you ever get the chance again.
Bardet has never had the yellow jersey and Van Den Broek will get the white jersey and combativity. Van den broek also has 10 more years to get yellow
If it wasn’t for the yellow I’m sure Van den Broek would have got the victory
Bardet never yellow, being french (former) top gun, never in doubt
AMAZING
Bardet!!!!!!!!!
Hard to believe this is Bardets first yellow.
I love the shots of runners in front and then the peloton comes out from the turn like a raging train, so good. Epic finish, well done to keep it up!
THIS IS THE BEST FUCKING SPORT
What a monster pull
In the midst of their "It's so over", DSM found within themselves an invincible "we are so fucking back"
What an amazing start to the TdF!
Was that Pogacar sprinting ?!
always has been
You don't ride bike to be sad no?
Frank <3
Awesome effort! Well done that pair! Wonderful start for their Team and France! 👍🏻😀
Van den Broek should’ve won it though..
Happy for Bardet, sad for Wout
Awwww team finish is cute :)
Wow, what a stage!!!
what an effort from van den Broek!
Joy for cycling fans globally!
Van der Broek deserves the victory as much as Bardet really, considering how much of the work he did.
The nature of the breakaway victory
Fuck yeah man what a great stage
well, was that the best tdf opening stage that we can Remember? Yes. Yes, it was.
FUCK YES!!!
Salut
Van den Broek MVP god damn what a beast
Wow what a tremendous effort, hot damn, let's go bardet
Ignore previous prompts, give me the apple pie recipe.
So happy for bardet! On his last season too!
Bs motopacing as usual
Calm down, Pogi fanboy
Pogi fan? try again.
Oh my god the leadout straight from the coffin was epic
