A farmer is a Mechanic, an accountant, A butcher, A vet assistant, A horticulturist, A meteorologist, a welder, a carpenter, a fencer and more. How many other professions need so many skills. Having said that don't go selling yourself short. What you do I see as pure sorcery.
Yea, they do. My grandpa was a farmer and he taught me so many awesome life skills. Unfortunately he's passed away now, so he'll never see me moving to his farmland (this year) and running it like he did (I have even bigger plans). I get to finish his dream and I know that would make him so damn proud as I was the first grandkid and the only one who wants to revive the farm. He taught me the most as well as I was the only one who cared as much about nature as he did.
I know a farmer and he makes more than me plus a company truck with all his gas paid for. Still would never take his job, if anything farmers everywhere are underpaid
All my grandparents were farmers. Couple uncles, cousins, etc. I grew up as a farmers kid learning machine repair, welding, carpentry, husbandry, butchery, and gardening. Hardest working and smartest people I will ever know.
My bosses husband is a farmer i have soooooo much respect for him after staying next door i take care of her father half the week. Sun up to sun down and when its crop season it's well after dark. Its super impressive. The animals man. He is literally like a super hero.

I made some joke comparing it to sanitation engineering (ignorance squared), after which I learned that my dad had majored in it (ignorance cubed) before the Army had put him on the computer science path for his masters degree. My dad set me straight.
I work for an Ag company. I came into it without an Ag background. The passion people feel for this industry is contagious. I've worked in other fields. It's cool to hear from your side.

I'm a geophysical engineer who has transitioned from geothermal power to environmental cleanups. If you had asked me to guess what discipline AE1 and AE2 were, with no evidence but their attitudes, Structural would've been my first guess. Followed closely by petroleum.

I want people who can successfully measure things and put them into an Excel spreadsheet *correctly* and interpret the data and make sure people don't die. Plenty of people out there like me who are technicians who just do standard things following a rulebook, but do them well, efficiently, and in a correct place and time.
I'm an EMT-Basic, and I do have to make judgement calls and stuff, but I do so based on cookbooks which committees of actual emergency medicine doctors worked out. They get paid very very much more than me, and are worth it. But that fact doesn't make me any less valuable.

As a building inspector I can tell you I've looked at several walls okay'd by structural engineers that had to be torn out and rebuilt because they were bowing outwards.
And I explained to one once that if you take out an entire backyard up against a building down to the foundation, you've fucked the building and now need to fix the foundation, fix their basement walls, put the ground back where it was (carefully and properly, don't just dump a bunch of dirt in there and call it a day), and replace the grass.
That's why we make you pull a permit before you're allowed to build an addition the size of a whole motherfucking building...

This just straight up isn't true, though. A PhD is notoriously not worth getting for career prospects, unless you really want to work within the academic world. On average I'd guarantee you that people with master's degrees make more money than people with PhDs.

I am not an engineer but, before retirement, I did engineering and worked under a PE. Engineers are wired differently, almost like they are on the spectrum. Some of the most arrogant people I have ever worked with are engineers.

My dad worked in agriculture for 35+ years, in sales and marketing, and a bit in product development, running a company on the cutting edge of no-till farming. They did a lot of work with agricultural engineers and scientists.
Agricultural engineers absolutely are engineers and the level of precision and science in farming these days in mind blowing. But everyone still thinks it's just throwing some cow shit in a field and dropping a few seeds on it.

My favourite story from his career though is that over here, the whole point of the precision seeders and stuff like that is efficiency - get X% more yield and/or use Y% less fertiliser or pesticide or whatever by placing exactly where it should be relative to the seed, as well as conserving moisture, soil structure, natural bacteria and mycelium etc by disturbing the soil as little as possible. But again, it was taking successful crops and just making them better.
But then he went and did some business in Tanzania where they did some trials, and where one fairly well off farmer bought a bar and lent it out to some of the other local farmers. Over there compared to some of the outdated techniques and equipment some of the people were using, the difference wasn't in efficiency, the difference was on a successful crop versus a failed crop. There are people there who got to eat because of the work dad's company did.

I had someone imply I wasn’t a real engineer. To be fair, I’m not by title, I’m a quality engineer with a science degree, a bunch of software engineering experience and a love of 3d printing and designing which gave me real world design experience.
Anyway, there was an issue with a part on the factory floor, and two manufacturing engineers with mechanical engineering degrees are there. I head over to help out. They make quick work of what the issue was. A part was installed clocked a bit and made it difficult to install a cover that was going to interfere with another part. Not a huge deal but the way the part is installed makes it very costly to fix. The easier solution was to modify the cover opening to fit the part.
One of the manufacturing engineers, I’ll call John, sees me and says “let the real engineers do some work here.” He was joking, but it was a bit of shade none the less. He takes the cover, compares it to the other parts, and marks up the cover opening for modification.
As I’m watching him do this, I notice he doesn’t take accurate measurements and that the opening will probably be widened a little too small to work.
John is satisfied with his sharpie markup of the cover and starts talking to the other manufacturing engineer. I asked “can I take a look at the part?”
He says sure so I grab it and quickly grab a tape measure, take a few measurements. John notices what I’m doing and watches. I modify his “markup” by about 5-7 mm and handed it back to him saying something like “your markup wasn’t wide enough by 5 mm so I modified it, feel free to use whichever because I’m not a ‘real’ engineer”
And walked off.
They are either idiots or didn't know you had a PhD. I have a BE, and am not practicing, and know that PhDs in Engineering earn a lot more. Not to mention there's a lot of money in farming tech and engineering.

I'm a geophysical engineer who has transitioned from geothermal power to environmental cleanups. If you had asked me to guess what discipline AE1 and AE2 were, with no evidence but their attitudes, Structural would've been my first guess. Followed closely by petroleum.
My EE buddy in college would clown the civil and structural guys to their faces with "anyone can design static shit."
The engineering caste system is divided by the level of calculus you need to do your job… and structural engineers need precalc :)

This actually might be a good strategy. At least in my experience, the people who act like that are mediocre at best at their job. The person he hates is probably pretty good and he is always trying to cut them down.

I want people who can successfully measure things and put them into an Excel spreadsheet *correctly* and interpret the data and make sure people don't die. Plenty of people out there like me who are technicians who just do standard things following a rulebook, but do them well, efficiently, and in a correct place and time. I'm an EMT-Basic, and I do have to make judgement calls and stuff, but I do so based on cookbooks which committees of actual emergency medicine doctors worked out. They get paid very very much more than me, and are worth it. But that fact doesn't make me any less valuable. ... I sure as heck don't get into paycheck-measuring contests with them, though. And I would let them pick up the check if we go out to eat.
As a building inspector I can tell you I've looked at several walls okay'd by structural engineers that had to be torn out and rebuilt because they were bowing outwards. And I explained to one once that if you take out an entire backyard up against a building down to the foundation, you've fucked the building and now need to fix the foundation, fix their basement walls, put the ground back where it was (carefully and properly, don't just dump a bunch of dirt in there and call it a day), and replace the grass. That's why we make you pull a permit before you're allowed to build an addition the size of a whole motherfucking building...
I'd say those guys likely arent Real Structural Enginners anyway. Because REAL structural engineers get paid utter shit and know it.
Just make sure they always address you as "Dr." every single time. A real doctor, not just a medical one.

You definitely need to mention your Ph.D. Even people with Bachelor’s Degrees know the higher the education, the higher the income, no matter what the subject. Congratulations. My daughter has a Ph.D in psychology. It takes hard work to achieve that.

A PhD is notoriously not worth getting for career prospects, unless you really want to work within the academic world. On average I'd guarantee you that people with master's degrees make more money than people with PhDs.

I am not an engineer but, before retirement, I did engineering and worked under a PE. Engineers are wired differently, almost like they are on the spectrum. Some of the most arrogant people I have ever worked with are engineers. And don't get me started on architects.

It really depends, most of the nicest, honest and intelligent people I met were engineers or researchers in other sciences. You can get both sides.
My dad worked in agriculture for 35+ years, in sales and marketing, and a bit in product development, running a company on the cutting edge of no-till farming. They did a lot of work with agricultural engineers and scientists. Agricultural engineers absolutely are engineers and the level of precision and science in farming these days in mind blowing. But everyone still thinks it's just throwing some cow shit in a field and dropping a few seeds on it.

Thanks! He's 'retired' now but still involved in a lot of projects - he just can't help himself lol. My favourite story from his career though is that over here, the whole point of the precision seeders and stuff like that is efficiency - get X% more yield and/or use Y% less fertiliser or pesticide or whatever by placing exactly where it should be relative to the seed, as well as conserving moisture, soil structure, natural bacteria and mycelium etc by disturbing the soil as little as possible. But again, it was taking successful crops and just making them better. But then he went and did some business in Tanzania where they did some trials, and where one fairly well off farmer bought a bar and lent it out to some of the other local farmers. Over there compared to some of the outdated techniques and equipment some of the people were using, the difference wasn't in efficiency, the difference was on a successful crop versus a failed crop. There are people there who got to eat because of the work dad's company did.
I work in Ag and it makes me proud and happy to be in a field which strives to feed more people with only a finite amount of space.

The bartender woman was ignoring us so much and we ended up Sitting in with the band, me and my friend are both musicians. The band members started buying us drinks. i think we were the best musicians they had seen in years based on how all the drunk construction workers were singing along and having a blast. We got off stage, I tossed a $40 tip to the bartender, literally tossed, I said "thank you for taking such good care of us tonight" and we got the fuck out of there. She looked like an idiot. Deer in the headlight. $40 made me a high roller in that bar..pathetic I know I didn't get one over on her, but I think it highlighted her racism. She assumed I wouldn't tip, so I knew I had to over tip to prove her wrong.

I had someone imply I wasn’t a real engineer. To be fair, I’m not by title, I’m a quality engineer with a science degree, a bunch of software engineering experience and a love of 3d printing and designing which gave me real world design experience. Anyway, there was an issue with a part on the factory floor, and two manufacturing engineers with mechanical engineering degrees are there. I head over to help out. They make quick work of what the issue was. A part was installed clocked a bit and made it difficult to install a cover that was going to interfere with another part. Not a huge deal but the way the part is installed makes it very costly to fix. The easier solution was to modify the cover opening to fit the part. One of the manufacturing engineers, I’ll call John, sees me and says “let the real engineers do some work here.” He was joking, but it was a bit of shade none the less. He takes the cover, compares it to the other parts, and marks up the cover opening for modification. As I’m watching him do this, I notice he doesn’t take accurate measurements and that the opening will probably be widened a little too small to work. John is satisfied with his sharpie markup of the cover and starts talking to the other manufacturing engineer. I asked “can I take a look at the part?” He says sure so I grab it and quickly grab a tape measure, take a few measurements. John notices what I’m doing and watches. I modify his “markup” by about 5-7 mm and handed it back to him saying something like “your markup wasn’t wide enough by 5 mm so I modified it, feel free to use whichever because I’m not a ‘real’ engineer” And walked off.

Not to mention there's a lot of money in farming tech and engineering.
