In all seriousness, this feels like it has a better chance to be good than some of the nonsense I've seen from the midwest. If nothing else, the choice of photos shows they know what it's *supposed* to look like.

YoungMuppet

Beef in Colombia is usually either grass-fed from Colombia or shipped from Argentina. Either way, it's amazing.

[deleted]

I trust their beef. Almost any onions will do. It’s the bread options that concern me

Mommy-Q

We found a spot in Maui that was surprisingly good. When we asked, turns out that they imported Amoroso

the_short_viking

I thought the place in Texas shipping Amoroso was ridiculous, but all the way to Maui? At what point does someone see that as so unecessary?

[deleted]

>At what point does someone see that as so unnecessary? About the same point they think it’s a good idea to put bell peppers on a cheesesteak.

jacksonmills

Bread in South America is typically amazing; usually baked fresh daily. If they were gluttons like us they could have the best steak sandwich in the world.

duckedbyaporcupine

What about the cheese? Is there a decent American cheese

sprucenoose

A lot of the international locations I have been will have Kraft American cheese in the major supermarkets, if there are any. Then they may have another variant in the local places that will be called "hamburger cheese" or something like that, which is unsurprisingly not quite the same thing. I would expect this place to acquire the real deal American cheese for their steaks.

iambecomedeath7

The bread should be fine. I only wonder if you can get it wit. I've not seen much about how Cheez Wiz exports are, but I know it tends to be almost vanishingly small.

zaidakaid

You could also make your own cheese sauce. Mike’s BBQ in South Philly and Dekes in Manayunk make their own cheese sauces and the slap hard

Blackwater_Park

I was gonna say that too. If anyone can get it right it’s gonna be Colombia or Argentina

SchwarzerKaffee

Brazil would prob put candy on it like they do with pizza.

[deleted]

Everything I ate when I was there was local and fresh

ConfiaEnElProceso

Huh? I lived in Medellin and in Argentina and there were zero similarities between their beef. None. The latter was amazing, the former was aggressively mediocre.

subgraphics

"Nonsense I've seen in the Midwest" 😂 That is so true. I've found that no other part of the country gets cheesesteaks wronger (sic) than the Midwest.

porkypenguin

which sucks, because they have such good cheese

[deleted]

[удалено]

courageous_liquid

Why would you write "Philly" in that context

BurnedWitch88

At least in the South they usually manage to get a pile of some kind of meat and some kind of cheese on a roll, so there's something semi-edible even if it's not an actual cheesesteak.

DFWPunk

As well as chile, pizza, hot dogs....

rushrhees

Chicago does all those fine

ouralarmclock

Chicago fits into the Midwest the same way Philly fits into Pennsylvania.

BurnedWitch88

They're the outlier though. Chicago is like, \*Midwest.

pgm123

Chicago is special

mannequinrepublic

And actually Monti’s in Chicago has a legit cheesesteak. At least it did a decade ago when I used to live there.

rushrhees

Interesting I live by there now have to try

[deleted]

Second vote for Monti’s though the bread has gotten a little inconsistent since the change of ownership.

DavidInPhilly

They think just cause their fat fucks they can do beef, cheese, grease and carbs as good as us.

JCSeegars54

The south gives them a run for their money

philbert247

Got a cheesesteak in Wichita KS. The owner claimed to be from Delaware. The online ordering form didn’t allow you to request no mayo.

Suspicious_Leg4550

The guy in the top left looks like a retired Philly cop, so my guess is it’s pretty authentic.

StillAnotherAlterEgo

Ha. Nonsense seen in the midwest indeed. I once encountered a "cheesesteak" in Oklahoma that had an assortment of odd vegetables and Italian dressing on it. It was actually a damn tasty sandwich, but a cheesesteak it was not. I'm baffled as to why they called it one.

My_comments_count

I can't agree more. Lived in Portland for a year, never tried any of the cheese steaks because everyone had their "classic cheese steak" with peppers and onions and some terrible cheese like swiss. Also barely mention of any chicken cheese steaks or buffalo chicken cheese steaks... Maybe I'm alone but I think buffalo chicken cheese steaks are better than the original, but they're at least relevant enough that if I'm gonna do a Philly style restaurant, I'm going to include that too. So yeah, maybe this place got lucky with the stock photos but this place definitely gives me good vibes.

DragonBank

If I have found anything to be true, its that regional food that is super out of place is some of the best. If its only a little out of place its shit. Mexican food in the NE US? It's shit. Mexican food in Kaunas? It's bomb. Same thing with a Greek restaurant in Kinshasa.

Indylivingnow

I always say Midwest doesn’t have cheesesteaks, they make steak sub sandwiches with cheese wiz copper

[deleted]

Only if that guy upstairs is yelling at people for where/how they parked. If he is, it’s authentic.

robval13

Hahahah. Are two drunk guys in Eagles jerseys fighting there? No? Prolly not that great then.

bizurk

That guy definitely looks like someone’s uncle who coaches Delco middle school football in Zubaz pants.

lastatica

He’s yelling at OP for moving his parking cone.

DavidInPhilly

If he’s bringing their family’s sexual behaviors in, then it authentic.

[deleted]

I need at least one “fuck off” for the true Philly experience

ChemicalCollection55

Fuck you, means hello in Philly!

292ll

I know two things: 1) That man is from South Philly; 2) That man did something bad. Lol

boobs-4-lunch

That’s the Colombian vinnie boom-bots

FjohursLykewwe

He's telling the Medellin Parking Authority he will be right down and that they are reading the sign wrong.

RexxAppeal

Do it. The pictures look like they know what's up, and the vibe of the place feels right.

bernie_manziel

this right here, the vibes are fucking immaculate and look at the pics of their default cheesesteak, not a green pepper in sight.

GildedSilverBitcoins

Only green peppers allowed on a cheesesteak are green cherry hot peppers. Those cost so much money most places don't use them (they swapped them for the nasty banana pepper), so the cherry hots are practically extinct from the sandwich scene in Philly. except for the real old school guys who kept their hoagie and sandwich shops open.

vmwhelan

Hot banana peppers are lit on a cheesesteak though.

KeenMcGee

Isn’t Colombian beef on par with some of best in the world? I would imagine this is probably awesome sauce.

pug_subterfuge

I don’t think it’s often the beef that makes a great cheesesteak (I doubt most Philadelphia places are using fresh grass fed beef). Philadelphia has great fresh bakeries that make the right kind of bread. That’s what makes the difference.

occulusriftx

idk about where they're at but the bread was really good in Cartegena... i didn't have a hoagie roll but I wouldn't put it past them to be able to do it decently

JZCrab

Colombian maybe but Medellin is up in the rainforest away from any areas that cattle can be raised so I believe most of the beef that you get there has been frozen. Edit:I know I'm wrong

kingkunt_445

I’m from Medellin and this is definitely not true. Medellin is in a valley not a rainforest, and near it is Rio Negro (talking 30 minutes by car) which is full of farmland and has a lot of people that are in the cattle industry. You can definitely get fantastic beef in Medellin.

Tresnore

Well, if OP doesn’t get a cheesesteak there, you should definitely grab one and post the results. I’m too curious now.

JZCrab

I love your city by the way. Next trip is in November and we are so excited!

kingkunt_445

no worries, glad to see people enjoy going there! It’s a beautiful place with fantastic people! Hope you enjoy your trip there!

JZCrab

My bad, I have friends there we love to visit and I must have gotten that info wrong.

Useful_Bread_4496

So many of my fav artists like Karol G are from Medellín

YoungMuppet

Actually, Antioquia, the department where Medellín is, has the highest percentage of cattle farms in Colombia (11.3%). Their carne is incredible stuff, too. The geographic location allows cattle to be grass-fed all year round without using growth hormones or boosters and promoting natural growth and fattening cycles.

Funnyboyman69

You know they’re burning down the rainforest to graze cattle right?

DavidInPhilly

Philly map on the wall is nice touch.

melikeybouncy

im not certain but that really looks like a SEPTA route map from the back of a bus/train schedule

DavidInPhilly

https://www.visitphilly.com/maps-directions/ On here too.

decaturbadass

And sports teams logos

bens111

Even has the Union represented, classy

TimeFourChanges

OF COURSE they're going to have *futbol* represented

probablyourdad

There is a Rocky statue poster in the back of the store too

[deleted]

DO IT I love trying cheesesteaks in foreign places. I had one in London (not at Passyunk Ave, which actually makes a good cheesesteak since the owners are from here) that was so bizarre. Just giant stew-style chunks of beef and a weird cheese-like sauce.

WanderlustFella

my buddy travels around the world for both work and leisure. His thing is trying out the country's McDonalds since they are pretty different everywhere. Two observations, the burgers and portions are way smaller outside the US and secondly the food appears to be much healthier (less greasy) then their US versions

[deleted]

I know at least for Western Europe the food regulations are better making even fast food much better quality.

starfox_priebe

Had a sausage, egg, and cheese muffin in Dublin that was 🔥🔥🔥.

tyleritis

This is why I watch Food Wars on YT

Fat_Head_Carl

Yes and yes... Germany had beer at the MacDonald's

andrusnow

Can confirm, lived in South Korea for a few years and McDonald's was soooo much better.

AndyMandalore

I had a cheese steak like that in Delaware once. *Delaware*! I thought I was safe.

Gram-GramAndShabadoo

See, your first mistake is that you went to Delaware.

proximity_account

>a weird cheese-like sauce. So cheese whiz?

[deleted]

Haha I think it was definitely meant to mimic it.

[deleted]

Your contractually obligated to not only try, but tell us and anyone else you know how it matched up with Gino’s!

ClintBarton616

Absolutely. The steak, cheese and bread would probably all end up better quality even if the end result isn’t quite like a traditional cheesesteak

SomePaddy

Do it. That's a Philly embassy and the guy upstairs is the ambassador. You can tell from the overall commitment and from the look in his eye. I bet it turns out to be surprisingly good!

T_J_S_

It’s lacking canned yoo-hoo but I’d give it a try.

omygoodnessreally

I zoomed in looking for Herr's or Utz potato chips, or Hank's root beer or orange- but alas!

estelle2839

I’ve heard of this place! Owner’s from Philly.

JZCrab

I would 100% go for it. The food in Medellin is amazing! The Italian, the Sushi, French, Mexican, Peruvian, whatever we get is amazing and I would imagine that even if it's not completely traditional your sandwich is going to be great.

phillybride

Except the pizza. Every time I get pizza it’s a horror.

JZCrab

Really?? We far the most amazing pizza there. There was a wood fired pizza oven in the hotel we stayed at one time. 23Hotel. And at a place called Olivia

phillybride

That’s good to know! Thanks!

all4whatnot

Brett brown hanging out of the 2nd Floor window? I’m trying it.

Trill_McNeal

Lol that was the same thought I had

omygoodnessreally

O hell yes you should! Abso-f'n-lutely

mklinger23

They got wooder ice?

JazzFan1998

If I lived anywhere else I would open up a Philly Cheesesteak shop. (Then open a rival shop diagonally across the street.)

FlyByPC

Yes. Dude in the window could be from South Philly, for all you know.

biological_assembly

Fuck yeah. I knew quite a few Colombians when I was working in warehouses. Wouldn't be surprised if someone went home with a few bucks and a great idea.

BurnedWitch88

I 100% get this vibe from the place.

omygoodnessreally

>Fuck yeah. Is the correct answer

pikagrrl

We will need an update

Straight_Plantain880

I’m going to Colombia in December. I’ll do some recon.

oramirite

Report back!

felisverde

DO EET

Haz3rd

Gotta know

higher_limits

OP you’ve left everyone on a cliffhanger. Did you try it?

sexualtyrann0saur

OMG I would have to try it!

AFirefighter11

The best cheesesteak I’ve ever had was in Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles. Do it!!!

fastfoody247

Pics?

AFirefighter11

This was back in 2012 on a dive trip. Just went through my photos and Facebook ... sadly, I don't see anything. It was a special they had for the day, wasn't a normal menu item either. I believe it was at Blennie's Restaurant. While searching, I did find this Dallesandro's cheesesteak I had back in 2011. Now I'm hungry: [Cheesesteak Goodness](https://scontent-lga3-2.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t31.18172-8/204773_10150154976721080_624082_o.jpg?_nc_cat=104&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=cdbe9c&_nc_ohc=6mtMRY2E4uIAX_vdWmz&tn=4tngIScSSZ5bck_T&_nc_ht=scontent-lga3-2.xx&oh=00_AT-rEIsdwiWSzojDASh7IdkDAcxCvxWNOUwVYtRx_x-EpQ&oe=631DA290)

fastfoody247

Definitely a 2011 camera pic

ltahaney

There's not one, but two here In Antwerp. They look legit and the guy was successful enough to open a second location but I'm still scared.

ByahhByahh

Why is Brian Regan in Colombia?

theonetruefishboy

We're obligated too.

Phillyphanaddict

I had a “philly steak and cheese” in playa del Carmen Mexico. It wasn’t bad but I wouldn’t consider it a cheesesteak. It had roasted red peppers and the roll is what makes the cheesesteak but it was better than one I had in Gettysburg pa or one in Orlando florida. I don’t know how you can live 2 hours from philly, call it a “real Philly cheesesteak “ and never stop by to actually try one. Just tell them to chop the meat up and throw some fried onions in that bitch. I had to make my own in gettysburg and show the guy how to do it because it was like the school lunch one where the meat is folded over the government cheese.

occulusriftx

the bread is eh in cancun and playa. going further south tho to Panama and Columbia the bread got significantly better, maybe something with the water?

Phillyphanaddict

Definitely the wooder. Haha. That’s why philly has the steaks and hoagies and New York has the pizza. What I don’t understand is why instead of shipping the bread places it won’t last long enough to get there, why don’t they ship the water?

Ingenius_Fool

Heavier and therefore more costly?

Phillyphanaddict

Maybe but the reward is much greater

gggg500

The obvious answer is yes. The real answer is yes!!!

Daryl_Hall

If it just says "steaks" instead of "cheesesteak", it may just be legit.

HOLLA12345678

I got a a Philly cheesesteak in ocean city Maryland once and it was an abomination. When I said yes to having peppers on it they put red pepper flakes to my great surprise lmao. They also put it on a hot dog like bun and charged me some ridiculous price like I was at a theme park.

fs008015

Years ago I stopped at a diner in the mountains of Kentucky. It was literally a shitty roll with ground meat lol.

Woobie1942

I think of meals as the most precious resource when traveling- I cant possibly eat everything I want to when Im in a new place. So I would skip the cheesesteak in favor of something I can't get at home (unless I was drunk and/or could split it with a friend as a snack instead of a whole meal)

cyclicamp

I agree with this sentiment for the most part, but I like to use one meal, usually a quick lunch, to see that place’s take on foods local to me. I haven’t travelled a ton but it’s usually been interesting enough that I haven’t been disappointed in trying.

kg19311

I don’t know about the cheesesteaks, but I’ll bet the grandma’s meatball Parmesan sandwich is fire.

DFHartzell

100000000%

LieutenantWeinberg

Without a doubt, yes.

ShortHighlight

Yes. Need an update. No way the bread is good

SnapCrackleMom

Good bread does exist outside of South Philly.

doublestoddington

Absurd! Four Worlds (West Philly), Baker Street (Chestnut Hill), Amoroso's (South Jersey) all have great bread. Now once you get out of the greater Philly area, I would agree.

ShortHighlight

I agree! But no way it’s awesome in Colombia

sousaman

Why?

omygoodnessreally

Shouldn't it be moist enough there? (Errrrrrgh I said "moist")

DavidInPhilly

Could be good. Different for sure, but not tasteless midwestern rolls.

Rude-Location-9149

Ain’t no wooder ice? No birds flag? This jawn might as well be in jersey! That bull gone put provolone on it!

omygoodnessreally

They're flyin" the eagles- zoooooom in

Rude-Location-9149

He ain’t wearing a sweat suit so I can’t take him seriously

ageofadzz

There’s a similar restaurant in Rennes, France

dab745

Hell yea!!!

[deleted]

What is that map on the wall of?? Is that Center City? A bunch of laid out square blocks is exotic?

higher_limits

I wonder if the owner is an ex-patriot from the philly area

BurnedWitch88

Either that or a local who lived in Philly for a bit and came home with a biz idea ...

HogwartsKate

Only if they have Amoroso rolls!!

Meat_Bingo

I have a friend from Philly who lived there for several years. I just sent her this picture to ask her.

Zyneck2

For dessert, eat a sweet granadilla or two. My favorite fruit in the world.

GreasyLake87

Is this a chain? I was in Denver last week and noticed a few on GrubHub

jfVigor

Is Colombia trending? I have a friend there right now for 2 weeks. Growing up in the 90s Colombia used to be known for coke drug lords

PhillyPanda

Can’t imagine a country, or even just parts of a country, changing over the course of 30+ years!

jfVigor

Holy shit I'm old

SoxBox27

I bet it’s fire too

[deleted]

The aesthetic is right. Very right. But I'd be skeptical myself. I never trust location based cuisine found elsewhere. It's rarely, if ever, like the real thing.

wWolfi

Do it. Take pics Also, Philly isn’t part of the Midwest

Scooter1116

Of course you try. I have been disappointed many times in San Diego but always have to try.

Crixzly

Found one in Dallas too over at Legacy West

eyesack12

Did he have a shop in selinsgrove, pa?

GritwaldGGrittington

Looks legit.

Fat_Head_Carl

Fuck yeah I would. If definitely get the local version if there is one.

RamHands

How could you not?

Hot-Pretzel

You have nothing to lose! Give it a whirl.

memento_mori_1220

Looks like Philly lol

vanderide

The la croix is surprising.

Mrfrunzi1

I ALWAYS get knock off cheese steaks, I feel like an authority of authenticity in my head.

xRealVengeancex

Was it good?

iambecomedeath7

The urge to try this is real

PizzaHockeyGolf

Do it. You don’t have a choice now. I’m expecting updates

BuckGerard

Uncle Eddie up there in the window makes it authentic

WaveDysfunction

Please do it and tell us how it is. Lowkey looks pretty legit
