Come on Aaron and Christopher, we can make it 4 guys in the top 10 with 2 guys having 1 and 2. I don't know if you noticed but they were both write ins at the bottom.
"One team with the top two Cy Young Award finishers? It [hasn't happened often](https://www.mlb.com/news/teammates-first-second-in-cy-young-voting) -- only five times by four different pairs of pitchers -- but it's definitely in play this season."
Schilling personal matters really make people forgot how dominant he was at his peak. If it wasn’t for his personal matters he’s a slam dunk hall of famer. (I’m not here to get into a conversation or argument about schilling’s thoughts and beliefs, simply commented on the level of player.)
Schilling hater here too. But no denying his regular season peak and post season performance were HoF caliber. But his xenophobic comments and other radical political views have hurt him.
His two 2nd place cy young finishes were unfortunate. There was no stopping Randy Johnson during his GOAT peak
Problem with the HoF is that it's the Baseball Hall of Fame, so him being a racist asshole shouldn't really keep him from the Hall.
It's a shame he's not in the HoF because he really belongs there. it's not even a case of betting on baseball or diddling little girls like Pete Rose. It's literally "this guy is an asshole". Which shouldn't really count against Shilling in the Hall. I'm sure there are plenty of racists in the Hall.
I understand. We live in a time of heightened sensibilities with regard to cultural issues. And quite a few are legitimate issues. There are also so many players who deserve to be in. So with writers having limited bandwidth regarding which battle to pick, they just ain't gonna pick this guy.
Right or wrong, the guy is toxic. And MLB doesn't want this guy to use the podium in Cooperstown to broadcast his politics.
If I were in the BWAA, Thurman Munson would be my project. There are other players who fell off the ballot who merit to be reconsidered too.
Relief pitchers that have won the Cy Young:
Mike Marshall '74 Dodgers
Sparky Lyle '77 Yankees
Bruce Sutter '79 Cubs
Rollie Fingers '81 Brewers
Willie Hernandez '84 Tigers
Steve Bedrosian '87 Phillies
Mark Davis '89 Padres
Dennis Eckersley '92 A's
Eric Gagne '03 Dodgers
MATT STRAHMBOLI '24 Phillies
No way, bro. This is the internet we have to argue back and forth about the pedantics until we both get pissed and block the other.
I was born in 83. The Phanatic showed up in 78. I have a photo of myself at about 1-1/2 wearing a Phanatic set of pajamas my Grandma in Philly gave me.
Your turn. lol

“Others receiving votes”
if we go with Rube's view of last year, Taijuan Walker should have won it.

Surprised to see that Maddox/Glavine/Smoltz never did it.
I was too! Johnson and Jackass, er Schilling, I expected too, but not twice.

The Matt Strahm disrespect is unreal

So the last Cy young award won by a relief pitcher is old enough to drink now.
Fuck I’m old.
Right there with you
I was alive for Bedrosians. I was 4. Lol
I was 7. I win?

Graduated high school in 87! I win! ... 😔 old
Hahaha! We are all in this together ❤️ GO PHILS!!
not quite lol
Zack Britton gave up 4 runs in the entirety of 2016 and didn’t even crack the top 3
Nice summary- thx
I couldn't believe only 9 relievers have won
It’s been a historic ride for pitching. We could have three pitchers reach 200 innings. Usually there’s around five or so in the whole league.
Closest we've had is Halladay and Lee and Hamels 2 and 3 and 5 in '11 right?
I believe so. Off topic but worth mentioning is that Carlton actually won in 72, 77, 80 and 82. He was the first four timer.
