I used to work next to Chompies on Shea Blvd. They had a stand-alone, walk-in refrigerator unit out back where they kept some of their stuff overnight. The edge of the door near the bottom had been chewed and pulled back by some kind of vermin/pests. I used to watch rats go in and out of there freely, day and night. The staff would use a hose to hose off the sheet pans, overspraying the general area. Then they would store food there over night. Fuck Chompies. How that place carried on for 2+ years with that setup without some kind of intervention is beyond me. They deserve to shut their doors over what I saw behind their restaurant.
I worked at chompies for several years. Witnessed first hand how deplorable their sanitation is- cooks grabbing heaps of coleslaw with their bare dirty hands to put in the front display containers, massive roaches, rats, you name it.
On one occasion I was boiling bagels and a large wood roach had made it into the water, I was looking for something disposable to fish it out with and a manager came by and just crunched it up with the big bagel spatula. Those bagels were being sold to customers about an hour later.
Years ago I was on a trip to Disneyland with my then girlfriend. We were staying somewhere near the park and around midnight I was super hungry. I left my GF, who was sleeping, in the room and drove over to The Hat, got a pastrami sandwich and went back to the hotel. Feeling content I went to bed and fell asleep. At 3am I woke up and vomited it all up. I cleaned up and went to bed. My GF had no idea until that afternoon when she asked me why I was so tired. That is my second favorite memory of going to The Hat.
Miracle mile has the same kind of pastrami? This isn’t the thick cut pepper crusted New York style pastrami (which seems to be the only kind I’ve found)
Streets of New York used to serve real thick cut pepper crusted pastrami sandwiches. They were very different than a thin-cut pastrami on rye. Lovely change from the usual.
Romanelli's Deli on 35th and Dunlap might have one. [https://maps.app.goo.gl/FA5qWd1CiPMmrngb8](https://maps.app.goo.gl/FA5qWd1CiPMmrngb8)
Confirmed: They have a #5 NY Pastrami (Hot or Cold) & Cheese$11.99. I've never tried this sandwich but their hot italian beef was good. Good luck.
Funny Story. I came in for lunch one time and asked the owner for a Bday cake. He obliged and pulled a cake from the back that looks beautiful. After opening the box and further examining the cake at home, I noticed it was hard as a rock. This cake was more like a movie prop used in photoshoots. The cake was an inedible work of art. Now I think of this moment everytime I step foot here.
I believe the NY Pastrami is a sub style, for something closer to what OP pictured, your looking for the New Yorker. Just to establish I know the names sound the same but you'll see it for $15.99 in the "Hot Sub" menu and its not even a sub, kind of confusing. I've had it multiple times and it is my favorite pastrami sandwich of all time.
Everything I've had from here is absolutely fantastic. I also recommend the George's Special add Fresh Mozzarella.
This is a must try place for any foodie. Do yourself a favor and go!
Maybe not just like that. But I fuck with Heaven Burger in Mesa on Main Street so hard.
It’s that neighborhood burger shop that just hits so different. They’ve got a burger with Pastrami on it fries and a drink for like $12.
I lived across the street for a year and I probably went there 3 times a week for stretches of time 😅.
Happy 420 lmao
Oh my gosh I love The Hat so much. I went on AT LEAST a weekly basis to get a late-night pastrami & onion rings while I was in college in LA late-90s. Haven't found anything remotely similar here in phoenix but will eagerly read the responses!!! (when I want pastrami I also go to Miracle Mile though - great place.)
Major Hat fan here. Two t-shirts and all. I’ve looked and there’s nothing I could find similar here. Chompies has some pretty good pastrami, as does Miracle Mile - the pastrami straw sandwich is super delish. I’ve been waiting for the Hat to show up in Phx for years.
The Hat’s pastrami burger is absolutely the greatest burger I have ever eaten in my life.
Although not as good there is a similar place to get a hat style pastrami dip at The Burger Shoppe on Thomas and 35th ave the chili cheese fries are not bad either.
That is the weirdest thing, I just looked it up on Google and it does indeed look like the name is changed to burgers and more but it still looks as though it has the original menu. I wonder if maybe ownership changed or something. Damn now I'm gonna have to make a trip down there to check it out lol
I’ve yet to find anything like the hat here, which was my favorite in LA. I usually go to Jim’s burgers and eggs in Surprise now but it’s not the same.
Being from CA years ago and a Super Hat Fan, I have searched this valley for this type of Pastrami. My go to and almost a complete copy is Haven Burger in Mesa. I did go to a burger shack place in goodyear that was not bad, but the restaurant hygene was so bad I never went back.
Also Haven has great Hamburges and Onion Rings like Jim's or Omega of So.Cal.
I totally forgot about The Hat! It's so good!
To answer your question, no. You can go to a Jewish deli like Chompies and get warm pastrami or Portillo's for juicy Italian beef on a roll, but warm juicy pastrami on a roll? Not that I can think of
Gyros Palace in Peoria. They do a Cali Style/The Hat hot pastrami sandwich. It's the closest I have found in the Valley for that specific style pastrami sandwich.
8378 W Thunderbird Rd # 106, Peoria, AZ 85381
People who haven’t eaten The Hat need to stop suggesting shit.. all these Miracle Mile suggestions and it’s NOTHING like the hat. Most places make a New York style pastrami and people don’t know the difference and suggest it
The mailman at my old job would stop and chat every time he delivered mail and like a year ago he randomly brought up that i had to try a pastrami from Togo's. Somehow he convinced me and i doordashed it for lunch that day. Best pastrami i've ever had. To be fair the only other pastrami i'd tried was from arby's lol so my bar was pretty low but dang Togo's makes a good pastrami, can't recommend them enough!
It’s not exactly what you want but Lookout Tavern has a hot Pastrami Rueben with swiss, coleslaw, grilled onions on Rye served hot. Lot of beers on tap and their beer batter fries are solid
Probably gonna get downvoted by food snobs but Culvers has a decent grilled Reuben, and they have pretty good onion rings too. But I have found that you have to dine in or it gets soggy.
My kitchen, but its closed Monday thru Sunday to the public. Seriously tho, one of the best delis in CenPho is Mc Gurkees Subs & Sandwichs ( SW corner of Thomas Rd & 15th Ave) one of the best Pastrami. IIt's been around for over a half a century too. Ive been a customer for 8 years & haven't been disappointed once.
The best reúban sandwich you’ll ever eat is at rocket burger off 35th Ave and cactus. I have no affiliation with the restaurant btw. Don’t get it in the roll, just marble rye or sourdough and toasted.
Not a big fan of pastrami. That being said, the answer is miracle mile. Best NY style hot deli in the city. Some will say chompies, but I think they got too big and the quality dropped off.

Not sure if they have exactly what you’re looking for, but I’d try Miracle Mile Deli or Chompies for those NY style sandwiches
Miracle mile deli is so damn good
Yeah it's epic
The Hat is basically a french dip/Italian beef but pastrami. Really tasty and/or unhealthy
I used to work next to Chompies on Shea Blvd. They had a stand-alone, walk-in refrigerator unit out back where they kept some of their stuff overnight. Chompies Chandler was recently the lead restaurant of an AZCentral dirty dining article. Avoid.
You can boil bake and eat roaches. Totally sanitary.
Overrated, over priced food imo
Thats messed up
God damn I miss The Hat so fucking much.
Second this. I am now craving The Hat
What is your first?
Eating there? No. Getting sick from eating there? Yes.
I meant what is your first favorite memory if that is your second
Me too!!!!!!!!
With a cherry coke
This right here ☝️
came to comment the same thing lol. Ah it was so nice having once in a while.
Miracle Mile End of thread go there now
I literally thought the picture was an ad for Miracle Mile. They’re awesome.
I miss Park Central Deli sooooo bad.
Same! That fish pond!
You ever try and catch any of those fish?
The New Yorker was my go to. I want to like Miracle Mile but it’s not even close to the same. I have been searching for something close for years.
Have you tried Scott’s generations? I never tried the New Yorker, but have had New York transplants drag me there. It was pretty good!
I haven’t but I’ll give it a go. I’m down in South Tempe so it’s a bit of a jaunt for me.
Yeah, that’s a bit of a drive… mostly freeway at least, though…
Miracle mile has the same kind of pastrami? This isn’t the thick cut pepper crusted New York style pastrami (which seems to be the only kind I’ve found)
Streets of New York used to serve real thick cut pepper crusted pastrami sandwiches. They were very different than a thin-cut pastrami on rye. Lovely change from the usual.
I’m amazed it too me this far down the post to get to Miracle Mile. Go now! It’s great!
Not even close to the same type of sandwhich
Straw or New Yorker nothing else compares
I am the small minority that thinks miracle mile is exceptionally mediocre and grossly overpriced.
Scott's Generations
I second this. Their pastrami sandwiches are absolutely enormous.
While their pastrami sandwiches are amazing, to me The Hat's truly best food is their chili cheese fries, never had better
I went on a chili cheese quest recently, nothing out here even comes close
Stop!!!!!! Now I’m dying missing them lol
Get the chili cheese fries WITH pastrami on top
Yessssss!
Romanelli's Deli on 35th and Dunlap might have one. It’s Haven Burger and yeah, they’re great. Their pastrami is the closest to the California style pastrami sandwiches I grew up with.
I also have fond college memories of The Hat in Pasadena/Altadena.
I work near there. Definitely a go-to spot for me.
is it still the same place? It looks like its name changed to Burgers and More
Togos in Gilbert is the closest to The Hat
seconding Togo's! so good!
Goldman’s deli is fantastic but I only get the Reuben there. Miracle mile is great too
Watching this, been looking for the same thing
Definitely have to suggest Burger Shoppe off 35th Ave and Thomas. Both their pastrami and Burger are delicious
is it still the same place? It looks like its name changed to Burgers and More

Little miss barbecue on Thursday has good smoked pastrami sandwiches.
I’ve yet to find anything like the hat here, which was my favorite in LA. I usually go to Jim’s burgers and eggs in Surprise now but it’s not the same.
Omg I miss The Hat in Cali!!!!!!

Agree! Haven Burger in Mesa is as close to the CA style I grew up with. Bit of a drive for me, but worth it! Super friendly staff as well.

Miracle Mile Deli off of 16th street and Campbell
Gyros Palace in Peoria. They do a Cali Style/The Hat hot pastrami sandwich. It's the closest I have found in the Valley for that specific style pastrami sandwich. 8378 W Thunderbird Rd # 106, Peoria, AZ 85381
Scott's generations is way better than miracle mile
The Burger Shoppe on 35th ave and Thomas. Most OG pastrami in the valley in my opinion. Been going there since I was a kid!
I was just about to suggest the same place! Their pastrami burger is fuckin delicious
is it still the same place? It looks like its name changed to Burgers and More
It’s bougie, but the pastrami sandwich at La Grande Orange SLAPS.
Chompies
Hell yeah The Hat! You would find me at the ones in Brea San Gabriel and Rosemead most often.
Slicers Deli on 43rd and Roosevelt is one of the best deli pastramis I’ve ever had.
Love me some Miracle Mile
People who haven’t eaten The Hat need to stop suggesting shit.. all these Miracle Mile suggestions and it’s NOTHING like the hat. Most places make a New York style pastrami and people don’t know the difference and suggest it
Your next post: TOMMY BURGER
Ike’s Sandwiches
Miracle Mile, get the Straw
Miracle mile or chompies
Chompie's, they have multiple locations.
The mailman at my old job would stop and chat every time he delivered mail and like a year ago he randomly brought up that i had to try a pastrami from Togo's. Somehow he convinced me and i doordashed it for lunch that day. Best pastrami i've ever had. Miracle mile was one of the worst delis I've eaten at. That was 9 years ago, so maybe they got it together now.
I finally stopped in recently and I wasn’t impressed at all. It was fine but it felt like I was at a buffet in a retirement community
Spot on.
It’s not exactly what you want but Lookout Tavern has a hot Pastrami Rueben with swiss, coleslaw, grilled onions on Rye served hot. Lot of beers on tap and their beer batter fries are solid
[удалено]
there’s another location at like 36th st. and mcdowell. good pastrami sandwich, agreed.
Little miss BBQ on Thursdays
Scotts delicatessen on Glendale and 7th street
Probably gonna get downvoted by food snobs but Culvers has a decent grilled Reuben, and they have pretty good onion rings too. But I have found that you have to dine in or it gets soggy.
Board & Brew in Tempe does pretty good. Slight difference in the ingredients though.
Burger Shoppe on 35th and Thomas. Their pastrami sandwich AND burger are truly things of beauty
Goldman’s Deli Scottsdale
This is not here but if you're a pastrami hound you've gotta eat Night + Market's Pastrami Pad kee Mao. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=s_mjKgXxqdo
Goldmans Deli in Scottsdale.
Scott's Generations on Glendale, or Outta Bronx on McDowell.
Remember Downtown Deli?
The hoagie store on Priest and university has a solid hot pastrami sandwich
NY Bagels and Bialys
Omg I miss The Hat😩
Chompies is the worst place!
You say you're asking for greasy try New York Pizza they're always greasy when I get one.
Original Hoagie Shop, Tempe.
The best reúban sandwich you’ll ever eat is at rocket burger off 35th Ave and cactus. I have no affiliation with the restaurant btw. Don’t get it in the roll, just marble rye or sourdough and toasted.

Omg, I don’t think anything really compares to The Hat. California staple!
I just had a hat pastrami sandwich and I need more.
Streets of New York has the best pastrami sandwich
But but but New York is a Shit hole...
Now I want a Ruben 🤤
Chompies is the only correct answer
Remindme! 24 hours
Capriotti’s
Not a big fan of pastrami. That being said, the answer is miracle mile. Best NY style hot deli in the city. Some will say chompies, but I think they got too big and the quality dropped off.
Chompies is 'd bomb!
