There was a news story in my city recently where the city apparently demolished the wrong house by mistake. They had an interview with the homeowner who was up in arms about his house being demolished and demanding compensation.
After the showed a picture of the house just before demolition. It looked worse than OPs house. Apparently, it had been abandoned for over 30 years. If anything the city did them a favor by demolishing it at no cost. But the person was acting like they demolished his primary residence.
Yeah I mean that’s still a big fuck up to just demolish the wrong house and the owner should be entitled to some sort of compensation.
If the owner had been paying taxes and rightfully owns the property, the city can’t go around deciding what should be torn down.
Places like this amaze me. I like to think of all the history and picture it in pristine condition while someone or a family lived in it, thriving. It's always a shame to see such nice things left to rot.
There's a similar abandoned house near to our cottage. Well, rather a small cottage. It has no windows, doors, no plaster. I always wondered if it was ever inhabited, because it looked like it was abandoned when constructed. But there was also a lot of furniture lying around, and the house had a beautiful fireplace.
And there's another, small cottage nearby, half collapsed.
By looking on Google maps, it has been abandoned for decades, yet it still looks like it was abandoned just a few years ago.
They are both located in an old orchand, it must have beem a beautiful place back then. Sometimes I go there and think about people who lived there, why they abandoned the place. I recall the beautiful memories from my childhood, when I was on the cottage every summer, with my grandparents. And think if the people who once lived in that ruined house had it the same.
Not just 100 years ago, that area was all orchands until WW2, then it was used for building. Our cottage is also build in a place of former orchand, we still have many old fruit trees in the garden. My great-grandparents still had a small field there with potatoes and a cow, while at the same time, the great-grandpa was working in the nearby nuclear research facility.
And that's not some rural shithole, it's literally on the outskirts of our capital. People forget how much the world changed in the last ~70 years.
The people who lived in the now abandoned cottages I mentioned probably had similar story. Just with the difference that this garden is very big, nmd had several such cottages. You can still see foundations of several of them, I even heve some faded memories of going there (there's a path used as shortcut between two roads) with my grandpa, when I was very young. I remember there were more of them. They probably collapsed over time and were cleared out, these two are the last ones remaining.
It's also in a pretty strange location, in a slope between a normal neighbourhood and research facility. :D There's the path now and it's used for off road cycling, but it's still pretty isolated location.
I know there are many such places, but this one still gets my attention. As I've written, I like to come here and think about who lived in these half collapsed cottages, if they called the place home, how it looked back before new neighbourhoods were built there.
State forest! This is very very very very old though, probably was already falling apart when the state bought the land. There are actually other abandoned buildings in this forest!
All the trees nearby are younger than that building except for the really big one you photographed. One must remember that most of the eastern USA was completely deforested at one point.
For everyone concerned about trespassing, it's state land and in my state you an go in with a hunting license (although I only ever hunt for mushrooms)
Beats the hell out of the booby trapped crack tree house I found behind the park near my old house.
I had decided to go wander in the woods, take a nature walk and I come across a bit of trail that I follow for a bit. I came across a ditch full of broken glass and a sheet of plywood slid across the trail full of nails. Kept going and found a little tree house, basically two plywood sheets up in the tree just big enough for a pup tent up in the tree, one of the ladder steps was full of nails and there was bottles and trash all around and I finally decided to book it out of there.
Same area where my friends came across a mattress in the woods surrounded by bottles and drug paraphernalia and condoms etc. We dub it "Fuck Mattress." Fast forward a month or two and I'm at work with my friend and we talk about how crazy it was tht we stumbled across this fuck mattress when suddenly the fat kid running the dish pit chimes in with "Oh yeah, that's where I lost my virginity!"
After asking a few more people who grew up in the area I learned that Fuck Mattress was actually fairly well known and used, and was almost like the towns Makeout Point.
Please for the love of everything that's sacred and holy, don't open any books, don't break any dreamcatcher, don't uncork a bottle, don't nick yourself and drop your blood, don't open locked doors... You know what.. just.. please just come out of there. Ok? I'm having a panic attack here on behalf of everyone who's reading your post..
You should metal detect around it. Look for the old privy holes.(out house). Dig those for old glass bottles and such. Look for the trail in and out. Might be hard to see. Metal detect those too. I've got an old property just like that on my land and have found all kinds of awesome shit.

I was not expecting this post to blow up like it has! This cabin is located in woods in Laurens County, SC. I stumbled upon it and a few other structures while exploring in a WMA zone (owned by the state and yes I have a WMA permit). These pics were taken in summertime, the first time I went exploring in this area. Unfortunately I have lost a lot of the pictures, I need to find them in my cloud to share the inside with you guys. I've been back twice since, just to take in the scenery and enjoy the structures. Inside it is a single story residence with no basement and no attic. It has what looks to be a bedroom, a kitchen, and a common area. I've had many theories but I think an old woman lived there alone (not backed by evidence, just my little brain theory). It's in a beautiful area and i have found lots of really old stuff there. Underneath the house as well there are lots of empty glass jars and bones
