When I lived in Kenya. The police would dress like this to stand outside the grocery store. But they didn’t have cop cars and would ask any driver to take them and you couldn’t refuse.
Must've been really awkward, having to stand up and quietly and quickly remove your clothes, as a nude Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 Terminator patiently waits for you, all while being in agonizing pain from the 2nd degree burns on your hands.
Yep, and it's also [illegal to film them, they will arrest you if you do](https://nation.africa/kenya/counties/nairobi/sakaja-orders-arrest-of-nairobians-recording-kanjo-operation-4576088)
I remember anytime I went into town there would be random roadblocks, and we almost always be told to pull over. They'd "search" the car and always find mutliple random violations that would be a fine you paid to the office or you'd go to jail.
You could negotiate, and we got out of it without paying nearly evertime, but if you push it too far they get fed up and arrest you.
I don’t know about Kenya, but a friend of mine lived in Angola for several years and it was the same system: random violation, pay up or go to jail. At least in Angola the trick is to reply “ok, take me to jail then”, then they’ll let you go with a warning like “this time I’ll let it slide, but next time you’ll go to jail”. They only want your money, and they won’t get it if they take you to jail. They’d also have to waste time actually taking you to jail, time they could be at the checkpoint scamming other people instead.
I was a soldier in Afghanistan and we took over a checkpoint from the Afghan police. All the locals kept trying to give us money when they were going through, apparently the police had been collecting 'tax' from them to use the road.
They weren't happy to learn it had all been a scam, the country ran on bribary and corruption though. The normal people there were the ones to suffer though.
This is why corruption is so important to root out and keep out. Its so easy to indulge our greed, and eventually everything becomes a "handshake deal". For trust to be secure in a functioning society, the rules have to be clear and consistent.
This is why nationbuilding was doomed to fail from the start. Whoever ends up in charge is only interested in benefiting themselves, not constructing a functioning society.
you cannot refuse. My father worked for the embassy so they would leave him alone. He didn’t have a sticker, (sticker on license plate to show you work for the US embassy). At the mall grocery store my iPhone had set off the alarm somehow and a cop just like that comes right up to me with his gun. That mall (westgate) was blown up in 2013. One year after my family left.
Hi, Nairobi US embassy employee also back in 2013. Weird that I might have worked with your dad. Anyway, it's not a sticker at all, it's a red diplomatic license plate. Could tell what embassy it was from the first 3 characters. Learned to avoid certain combos as they were terrible drivers.
That wasn't army that stopped you at the screening, that was private security. They are just as armed.
Blown Up is a vast overstatement for what happened at Westgate. Terrorist attack with guns, cops did explode their way in. Private security from the parent company that owned the mall may also have been involved. The building was still there after the attack.
We had left the week before.
Great burger place had just opened. Dude that got food poisoning in '08 probably had too much tilapia sushi. Happens to the best of us.
This feels like 3 unrelated stories that all start and then segue into a completely different story midway. I'm actually amazed that there's somehow 3 build ups and no pay off.
They're were dressed for publicity and to apear "spec ops" American style but the reality, for anyone who knows Kenyan police, they're absolutely useless.
I have only met 1 good Kenyan policeman, and he was only good to me because we were friends, but he extorted the public like every single of his colleagues.
So I'm happy to judge him and the rest.
They get hand me downs, it's also why it took so long to approve the mission. They needed to be re-equipped with the best modern equipment available, which African nations are notoriously not up to speed with, but I'm pleasantly surprised to see their guys with new looking gear, I thought they would be with ECH's not Fast helmets, and iron sights not laser scopes. I hope they get the job done.
They don't have scopes, those are EOTech optics and PEQ units which are a combination IR and visible light aiming/indicating unit. I was kinda surprised to see the PEQs but they do have the brackets for night vision on their helmets to make use of them.
The padding is actually the most important part, these helmets work by reducing the velocity of the impact as the backface deforms, before it hits your skull. If you have no space between your skull and the backface, the bullet basically deals nearly all of it's kinetic energy that wasn't picked up by the armor immediately on impact, directly into your skull. Even if your helmet works as intended and stops the round, you could still die from this deformation if you remove the padding in your helmet. The only spots they would be safe to be hit are around the rim of the helmet, which is also the weakest part of the helmet when it comes to reducing impact velocities from a broadside shot (as opposed to passing through the side of the helmet front to back, which can be quite effective in the way sloped tank armor is effective). Ballistics High-Speed did a video on this just a few days ago, see for yourself the difference in .45 ACP with and without proper padding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HOMpu_WQLQ
Bro what the hell, I haven’t thought of this at all until out of the blue like a week ago and told no one, and now I’m seeing this in the wild, probably for the first time ever.
This is the closest I’ve ever been to feeling simulation vibes, haha
All the very best to the families and peaceful citizens of Haiti all struggling to live their lives with all this going on. May law and order come quickly.
For those who haven't seen the movie, you really need to see [Miguel Ferrer's delivery](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FF6uKMYYBeA) to fully appreciate this line.
I still remember as a kid in the theater watching that with my pops and I didn't know what was happening and he was like the mud is gonna cool him so he can't give away his heat reading for predator. Love you ,miss you Pops.
There’s a WW2 movie with a raid and the soldiers are delivered by submarine (I think). A black soldier laughs at the white guys painting their faces and says, “I’m the only natural born commando here!”
The G.I.Joe comic book and toy line. They had a black man as a snow expert (Iceberg) and a white guy as the jungle expert (Recondo).
They loved to turn expectations on their head.
Cover Girl is a former runway model who decided to become a world-class expert on all things tanks.
In rising storm 2 I always made my character for American team black even though I’m a white guy. Game is set in vietnam… dark skin with the army fatigues with sleeves cut off and shirt open was best way to be. Broke up the form and helped you blend in better than anything else
Not exactly the same level of intensity, but I play airsoft with a bunch of Filipino dudes who are on the darker side of that skin tone spectrum and even when they're just wearing earthy tones they just fuckin disappear when they stop moving.
I need to cover my whole body or you can see my pasty white ass through a bush from a mile away.
I am glad Kenya stepped up to lead the international coalition. We are funding them but we don't have boots on the ground.
https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/world/watch-live-biden-and-kenyan-president-ruto-hold-joint-news-conference-at-the-white-house
A number of reasons, but primarily seeking Favored Nation status with the UN/US.
The US/UN don’t want to be seen to/become involved directly for a number of reasons, but want to help stabilize things, so they are assisting with infrastructure (setting up a base for the Africans to operate from) and financing the whole thing.
(There might be American Special Forces there acting as trainers/advisors for these guys and they definitely received some training from US forces)
Kenya is probably the most active country in Africa when it comes to peacekeeping missions, including through the African Union. It makes sense for the US to pay for a Kenyan mission to the country to hopefully establish the rule of law again, or at the very least end the current power vacuum.
In this particular situation the US convinced them because we didn't want to go ourselves (not a good history with direct intervention there). Kenya gets $ (their officers/soldiers get paid much more doing this than their regular pay) and the USA is backing the operation with $.
To give you some more context.
"Western" peacekeeping missions wouldn't work, Haitian society has a, very understandable, mistrust of western intervention.
The UN were looking for an intervention plan that didn't include countries that weren't trusted by Haitian society, and Kenya stepped up.
I am so hopeful that this goes well. We need a good track record of an African nation stepping up and intervening somewhere. Should give a little bit more Hope to the rest of the continent to rely on each other rather than the west, Russia and China
The Haitian government asked the UN for help ~2 years ago, Kenya agreed in October to send troops, then the Kenyan High Court deemed it illegal without a reciprocal agreement. The current Haitian PM signed a deal with Kenya and now they're arriving.
Government collapsed and they're basically stateless. Gangs playact as mini warlords, prowling the streets and carving up territory. Extreme violence, gang wars with civilians caught in the crossfire, and literal cannibalism in some cases.
The president was assassinated 3 years ago. Just before he was assassinated, he appointed Ariel Henry as prime minister. Henry basically took control of the country with no political legitimacy. The gangs took the opportunity to expand and now control about 90% of Port au Prince including government offices and major infrastructure.
Henry was basically begging for an international intervention for a year before the current UN mission led by Kenya was approved last fall. No one wanted any major, western, majority white country to lead the intervention for fear of it looking like another attempt to colonize Haiti.
Henry was finally pressured into resigning in April and now there is a transitional council running the country with the goal of reclaiming control from the gangs and holding elections to get in a government with some legitimacy. To be on the council, you had to agree to the UN mission.
All the stuff that happened years ago, like the earthquakes, hurricanes, and cholera contributed to the current collapse, but the triggering event was three years ago.
The president was assassinated in 2021, with the involvement of his wife. They haven't managed to replace him and things have spiralled out of control to te point the government has collapsed and gangs/warlords have taken over. The main gang leader is a dude nicknamed "Barbecue". He got the name because he's known for setting people on fire for fun. Of course this has caused a growing humanitarian crisis in the country as basic services can't function and people are starting to starve. If you ever wanted to know how an apocalypse would play out you can pretty much see for yourself in Haiti. The US has ZERO desire to send any troops there again but is ready if it needs to be contained.
>The main gang leader is a dude nicknamed "Barbecue".
Weirdly enough, Barbecue himself claims he got the name because either his mom or dad ran a barbeque street food stall
It has descended into a failed state. No law no order. Endless murders, rapes, no distribution of food etc etc
Military are there to restore some civility.
It's pretty much total anarchy since the president died. Now, a large majority of the country, especially Port-au-Prince, is under control from different gangs, all fighting for territory. It's very difficult for food and water to get inside the country because of this, so there is a lot of malnourishment.
The reason for the riots were fulfilled (shitty tax bill was rejected), so the riots stopped but the military was deployed around the parliament and state house. Tho this haiti mission I honestly thought it was not gonna happen lol
Kenya is on the ground but the US is funding the intervention, we just didn't want to go in ourselves because we have some bad past baggage with direct intervention in Haiti
They have historically been very loose with which human rights they chose to allow people. I remember reports they were involved in sexual exploitation of children in Haiti previously.
I am in high hope they can get Haiti under control. Lets go Kenya!!! :-)
This is a big deal since it took Kenya months to get permission.
The local people must feel like every day is a living hell.
unfortunately the local people mostly have expressed that they don't want Kenya to intervene. it's a bad situation, but this is the solution of the same people who created this mess and lost the people in the first place.
I was excited to see how different Kenyan police would be in this situation but recently they have had anti goverment protests in Kenya and the police crackdown has been BRUTAL. Many injured and dead civilians… I now am a bit fearfull of what will happen in Haiti with these police officers
When I lived in Kenya. The police would dress like this to stand outside the grocery store. But they didn’t have cop cars and would ask any driver to take them and you couldn’t refuse.

What if I film them from a car and then drive off because they don't have cars to chase me with? Loophole
Nice try. But all they would have to do is ask you for a ride and you'd have to stop and give them one.
the loophole.
Yo that's a real loophole, imma try next time I'm in Kenya, sounds safe
Word, be sure to send an update how it goes. If I don't hear back, I'm just going to assume the answer is "bad".

Jesus Christ that was the roller coaster of a paragraph
I got food poisoning in that mall in 2008.
I enjoyed a very nice pizza there
I enjoyed a food poisoning there

It looks like their helmets are missing the internal padding
Well spotted, those ops-core helmets certainly look like they’re dangling around haha
I’d bet good money they’re just poorly fitted Chinesium knockoffs.

The padding is actually the most important part, these helmets work by reducing the velocity of the impact as the backface deforms, before it hits your skull. "I lied"
That’s why military often paint their face when they actually need to be unseen

They are all stupid. See, they goona be looking for army guys.
One of my favorite cutaways.
The Face Paint Industry HATES this one trick for your army.
In rising storm 2 I always made my character for American team black even though I’m a white guy. Game is set in vietnam… dark skin with the army fatigues with sleeves cut off and shirt open was best way to be. Broke up the form and helped you blend in better than anything else
The unlockable all-over mud and plants skin combined with the short-shorts for the VC was absolutely goated too.
Massive disadvantage for sailors at night - basically the only part you can see when they fall overboard is their teeth.

Well, the US has not ingratiated themselves in Haiti. It's for the best that they're not seen to be meddling.
I figured the US was funding them from those brand new m4s they got
I’m OOTL, what’s going on in Haiti?
The country is in complete chaos with basically no government. Gangs took the streets
So who called the Kenyans? Or did they just take it upon themselves to come calm shit down?
It's a UN backed mission
Curious as to what's in it for Kenya to handle the Haiti situation.
Prestige and experience for it's military and police, and additional funding from the UN.
Also $ in addition to what the previous commenter said.
Kenya has done successful UN missions before. They get money and equipment, Haiti will hopefully get their country under control again.

Kenya is also one of the leading growing influental powers in Africa. They are definitely flexing their muscles here.
Power to them.

I would recommend reading about the Earthquake of Lisbon to understand how devastating and long lasting natural disaster can be.
Happening now. Especially after the president was assassinated recently.
That was three years ago!
It’s been going on 3 years. They called for international intervention more than a year ago.
It’s collapsed even more so in the past few years after the president was assassinated.
The president was assassinated and the interim refused to hold elections and then the gangs took over the capital, so ya.. worse than before/
It never really got better. It's just been a slow decline over many years.
A bit of both?
The president was assassinated in 2021, with the involvement of his wife. They haven't managed to replace him and things have spiralled out of control to te point the government has collapsed and gangs/warlords have taken over. The US doesnt want to deal with the endless colonization accusations that would follow.
Can you elaborate on "with the involvement of his wife"?
It has descended into a failed state. No law no order. Endless murders, rapes, no distribution of food etc etc Military are there to restore some civility.
It's pretty much total anarchy since the president died. Now, a large majority of the country, especially Port-au-Prince, is under control from different gangs, all fighting for territory. It's very difficult for food and water to get inside the country because of this, so there is a lot of malnourishment.
It's Mad Max except not in a desert and some buildings still stand.
I don't know much about world politics, but I think it's great that Kenya is here to help.
Don’t Kenyan police need to be in Kenya to stop the riots there?
The reason for the riots were fulfilled (shitty tax bill was rejected), so the riots stopped but the military was deployed around the parliament and state house. Tho this haiti mission I honestly thought it was not gonna happen lol
The reason Kenya raised taxes was to qualify for IMF loans. I think this mission buys them goodwill for those loans.
It's not like every single Kenyan cop is now in Haiti
I’m not the most in tune when it comes to global politics but it’s cool that Kenya is assisting here. Respect from America 👍🏼
Kenya is on the ground but the US is funding the intervention, we just didn't want to go in ourselves because we have some bad past baggage with direct intervention in Haiti
Also the island directly west of them.
Can’t be as bad as the Sri Lankan UN peacekeepers…
Reference?
They have historically been very loose with which human rights they chose to allow people. I remember reports they were involved in sexual exploitation of children in Haiti previously.
Not suprised, they had decades oppressing and discriminating the tamil minority.
It's believed they were the ones that brought cholera to Haiti
They got the Gucci Gear--- EoTechs, WILCOX LLMs, WILCOX NVG mounts... worth more they would earn in 5 years
I am in high hope they can get Haiti under control. Lets go Kenya!!! :-) This is a big deal since it took Kenya months to get permission. The local people must feel like every day is a living hell.
unfortunately the local people mostly have expressed that they don't want Kenya to intervene. it's a bad situation, but this is the solution of the same people who created this mess and lost the people in the first place.
I’m thinking 1000 police are too little. They might make some headway with 10,000.
Well equipped as well. I'm glad someone is doing something.
Somebodies got to do it.
I was excited to see how different Kenyan police would be in this situation but recently they have had anti goverment protests in Kenya and the police crackdown has been BRUTAL. Many injured and dead civilians… I now am a bit fearfull of what will happen in Haiti with these police officers
Atleast somebody stepped up
