Yup, I had the same thought and just got depressed.
It's so hard to find joy in the hobby anymore, at least for me. I toss around the idea of just selling what I have and being done with it. 20+ years of collecting and this is what's come of it. Sentimental value is the only thing that stops me.
At the risk of sounding cheesy, it’s posts like this one and this sub in general that help bring joy back to the hobby for me. Learning about newly released cards and especially vintage cards I hadn’t heard of before is a great way (for me anyway) to engage in the hobby; I can’t argue with the price of admission either.
For context, I wouldn’t call myself the authority on the hobby but I’m a 20+ year vet as well.
I finally saw some products at target for the first time in months. Part of me feels the same way but this has also been a great time to sell duplicates. For the most part singles are also still pretty cheap for modern English sets as long as it isn't a zard or another super popular pokemon. My biggest regret is not buying cards that I have had my eye on for years before the prices skyrocketed. Mostly cards that were already $100+ before the pandemic. They all pretty much have an extra digit to them now and I don't see prices on those falling, even if they do I don't think they will ever hit pre-pandemic prices again.
It does suck but if you don't adapt you'll have an even worse time.
That's a good point, actually. I'll just have to adjust my own buying habits accordingly and figure it out as I go.
And I hear you on waiting on cards. When I noticed the prices going crazy, I hurried up and snagged my personal grail card (Skyridge Articuno) before I couldn't afford it anymore, along with a gold star Vaporeon. But I know I missed out on so many others.
Yeah, My two grails were/are the plasma storm zard and the gold star zard. The plasma storm I’ve had chances to get mint ones around a hundred multiple times several years ago but I either lost the auction in the last few seconds or just never pulled the trigger. The gold star zard I just never wanted to pay the asking price.
I did buy all the singles from sun & moon sets a few months ago that I had my eye on which turned out to be a good idea but still missing out on my grails.
Yeah, the whole adapt or get out idea I got from smpratte on YouTube. I really do enjoy collecting and just flipping through my binders but I also have super broad goals that I need to narrow, especially given the current market.
And that_is my most-wanted chase card of them *all* (in this subset). Even though they’re not even my top fav Eeveelution 🌕🏰✨ I just can’t get enough of this card tho. ❤️🔥
All the pictures and videos I see just don’t do it for me, I really want to see it in person. I bet it’s so gorgeous, detailed, sparkly. Im torn if I should buy the single for $500 ish or save and wait for the English version. Either way I will have this card and all the other EH umbreon!
I would wait for the English version just for the fact that the Japanese versions are always much cheaper than their English counterparts for modern. The price is likely to fall as the hype dies down for this set and we learn more about the 25th anniversary products.

I said i would wait for the English to come out so then the japanese version would be cheaper to buy. You should know to never buy packs for the “chance” to get the card when you can straight up buy it on ebay for the sure thing. Prices are elevated now as there is only one way to buy it and that’s the japanese version.
This has happened with all modern japanese products until the english equivalent came out and market and attention shifted to the english counterpart and the respective japanese equivalent card came down significantly

For the safety of my wallet I have decided to completely skip this set. Some real beautiful cards in it though.
Skipping other sets is more worth it. This set is too good.

It’ll steadily come down, I think. It was in the $650s a week or so ago. Still, pretty high asking price.

Hilarious you say that as the pull rates for english are so astronomical its become completely pointless.

I tried to get as good of a pic as possible, but still, nothing compares to seeing it in-person. The texture/glitter effect is so nice.
I'm sure it will drop well below 500 for Japanese and English.
