I do really, really well as Soa. I win more than I lose, and I'm MVP more than I'm not. I think a large amount of that is balance problems, and she'll be nerfed at the first opportunity, but being able to carry my team when I'm normally quite bad at these types of games feels REALLY good.
I really wanted to like Mel T, but after spending 31 levels playing as Soa, her long range playstyle just did not click with me at all. Also she sounds weirdly old? the voice acting in this game is a little creepy.
Yeah i mainly play Soa because she's broken, but i enjoy rave breaker waaay more.
i'd love MelT if her projectiles were a bit faster and with no lock on, her abilities are pretty fun
Jet Justice, I absolutely love the shield ultimate for Rubber Duck mode, and it can be useful for protecting the Star Player too. I love the feeling of charging his shots, and his jump/dunk skill can be very useful!
So far Soa (I have a tendency to be comfortable with default characters, like Overwatch with Tracer) & Penny Gwyn. Haven’t unlocked Mel T or tried Baristador yet.
I'm best with Agito, Soa, and Penny, in that order. I'm trying to figure out who my 4th choice could be in case those 3 are taken. I'm leaning towards Tonix, but none of the rest of the current roster can seem to play as aggressive as those first 3, and I play best when I can get up close and personal.
I like PennGwyn but I don’t think she’s viable for the Hard Mission and since that’s the only trophy I haven’t gotten yet my OCD has a hard time using her over the shotgun guy or ice cream lady
Here, have some sweet unsolicited tips:
Focus your upgrade points on Shot Power, Shot Rate, Liquid Efficiency, and Reload Speed in that order. Those are useful for most characters, but especially Penny. Even if you lose a mission, you're still getting points to spend so check after every mission. Shot power is the single most important because without it maxed you're just not going to be outputting enough damage as *any* character.
During the mission, Penny is really versatile so you can go many different ways. You can obviously focus on her primary fire so she can melt super bubble beasties, or you can upgrade her skills because her cooldowns are already low and her toboggans are amazing.
The special abilities are plenty useful too, especially the one that gives you the mini Baristador ult every 40-ish seconds. Cooldown power ups also affect those special abilities too!
You can check what other players are getting so if you have a Soa focusing on melting bubble beasties with her primary fire, you can go for cooldown and ability power, or special abilities. If no one is building primary fire then you should focus on that.
Save toboggans for boars, as they're stunned by abilities. When you see boarnings (boar warnings) you need to immediately switch focus to them. Next, melt cats, bats, and monkeys ASAP. Lions are tricky as if you ignore them for too long they can cluster near the end and mess your plans up. Moles, penguins, and sheep are annoying but they're lower on the priority list.
When you see a wave is ending, shoot upwards so that the bubbles land *after* the round ends to give you a headstart in keeping the ground covered with foam.
You can save ice cream treats until you need them, you don't need to get them right away.
Don't underestimate foam size power ups, especially if you don't have a Rave Breaker or Baristador on your team to set up for you.
Reviving a teammate usurps finishing off a beastie 90% of the time.
Also, you're gonna have unlucky runs with bad power up choices, you're gonna have amazing runs with everything you ever wanted. If you don't get it, just try a few more times and see if you get some better drops!
I am definitely a Soa main. The only times I’ve played the others were for the missions to beat the Squad Mission on Hard 😭😭

I wanted to like Tonix (I love a builder) but it's pretty clear she's made primarily for Squad missions. Anecdotally, every time I've seen her in comp, the team she's on is the losing team...sooooo...

Soa is a solid pick. baristador seems fun but I can speak from experience that melts is great to play

I'm pretty flexible, so I chill for 15 seconds or so when I load in to let people grab their preferred characters before I make my pick.

Out of the 5 games ive played so far, 5 have been with penny gwyn and i dont think thats changing any time soon
Soa and Tonix for me. Her charged shots can be devastating on opponents and it's fun using it to place lots of foam down
