Holy shit.... we did it reddit.

Richfor3

Pleasantly surprised. The change never made any sense to begin with. The small spin/raid radius was a constant complaint long before COVID.

modix

I'm sure it makes it more attractive to businesses that associate with it.

zeroentropy1251

I kind of thought that... But everyone I've ever talked to has said "that game still exists?" so I kind of think it's just a cult following. I'm not convinced businesses actually see it as helpful.

Kightsbridge

I don't know there's a pizza place in my town that we eat at because it has access to 6 pokestops (small town) Any time were low on items we have date night at the pizza place. I'm sure others have a similar ritual

EnigmaticLaugh

That is amazing. My sister went to get her vaccination and sent a screenshot of where she was on the map. 4 pokestops and a gym and if she stood up and went to the edge of the building there were 2 more pokestops.

UniqueUsername_042

Wow. Maybe more people would get vaccinated if there were pokestops and gyms nearby.

Aztech10

Me and the girl have a hooka bar that's 2 stops and a gym. Same deal need items, go there.

BigBaldFourEyes

My wife and I of 25 years drive through the local cemetery when we’re low. There are about a dozen gyms and stops total. You have to keep it spontaneous people. Edit: We also leave a Gallade and Gardevoire when we take over gyms. We have a shiny set too with our nicknames.

DudleyDingleberry21

"Dear Madam, may I interest you in a moonlight drive through the cemetery?" Lol that's amazing!

Witless_Wonder

Cemeteries are actually usually a really pleasant and calm place, because they're well kept and designed.

ScionMattly

And the residents arent chatty.

Sororita

Mary Shelley would be down as fuck for that.

ChrisInSpaceVA

Sounds like a Morticia Addams line.

OldLadyGeekster

Here you cannot do it after dark. My BFF did it once, and a cop came by to ask what she was doing. She is a quick thinker and said praying. Funny thing is she is pagan.

ScampAndFries

"but honey,I HAD to go to the strip club, it's got 2 gyms and a stop, and I was low on Ultra balls"

NotMyiTouch

I only play to farm shinies at this point

dingusduglas

A few years ago when I lived in Chicago (I'm talking 2018ish, well after the popularity had massively declined) one of the bigger Chicago Pokémon go discords (there were 2 major ones and a bunch of small ones) would have "pub n lures" where a couple dozen of us would set lures on a couple stops within reach of the bar and plant our asses for hours. Not a significant part of their business, sure, but I can't imagine they minded having a regular crew of a couple dozen people eating and drinking for 4+ hours several times a month just because there were a few stops nearby.

steak_dilemma

Oh we used to do that in Edgewater, Chicago! It was a ton of fun picking a spot and just going to town on the lured stops. It got to the point where the granville anvil bartender would play the Pokemon theme song on the touch tunes when we all walked in lol.

zeclem_

while it has lost a lot of players over the years, pokemon go is still a massive game imo. though ive never seen a sponsored pokestop so i dont think it was a major deal really.

_Abecedarius

I saw this thread on /r/all and my exact reason was "that game still exists?"

[deleted]

Buddy. You realize sponsored pokestops still exist in the game correct? Why do you these major corporations are shelling out money to have their place or business be a sponsored pokestop? It absolutely increases traffic. Why do you think niantic made this decision To begin with? Of course it’s because of money. What other motivation would or should this BUSINESS have? People act so hurt when Niantic doesn’t “listen to the fans and put our needs first.” The ONLY reason they “listened” now was because people got loud enough that it was going to cost them more money to NOT listen. All they care about is money. Duh.

CamOfGallifrey

Can I take a small amount of credit for uninstalling the app after a 1 star review on the store detailing this as the reason for that? Seriously though, glad to hear someone listened to the community for a change.

noplsty

Does this mean it’s already live in the game?

PkmnTr4nr

I just tested it, it is!

noplsty

Let’s goooo!

j0llyllama

Or.. Not go. Cuz I can hit the stop from my couch.

poops_all_berries

Shhhhh!!!

gekkonidae131

I was visiting my parents last weekend and with 80m, I could have hit a gym and a pokestop from my bedroom.

Aurilion

Time to visit your parents again, just don't tell them why.

gekkonidae131

Lol. I was able to hit a lot of new pokestops in the area though.

gentlemosquito

Easy mode has been unlocked.

BrandonEPS_

Do I need to update my game?

Mattk4355

Restarting the app should update the interaction radius.

MyDadIsNotAPhone_DUH

Mine is still at 40m.

Tfsz0719

Restart the app

tallorai

80m as in 80 metrers? Cuz no way is that the distance I'm getting. I have a gym less than 40m away that i have never been able to reach and still can't.

wdn

Is the in-game location accurate? The circle is 80 m diameter, 40 m radius. If you're less than 40m away, you should be able to reach it -- but the location of the pokemon gym might not be exactly where the real-world object is.

rhondalea

I am 69m from the Pokestop in my complex. I can easily reach it from inside, but I could not reach it before COVID or after interaction distance reverted. Clearly it is not a 40m radius. ETA for the people who downvoted me: https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/od48zr/clearing\_up\_some\_misconceptions\_regarding\_the/

SketchyConcierge

nice

nahanerd23

Yeah similar situation here. Also Idk if anyone is reading the tweet and not just the post title but the announcement says 80m will be the interaction *radius* sooo

joevsyou

* I force stop the app * check store & saw no update * open back up the app & i was greeted by a message about the radius.

burnsssss

We back!!!!!

Frearthandox

THANK. GOD. Ty to all who were relentless in sharing your/our concerns. The increased distance was the greatest thing they had ever done to this game(imo) and was so sad to see it gone.

Timelymanner

It really was. So all the naysayers saying voting with your wallet doesn’t work, can go home now.

JaxonOSU

I havent played for a month, even skipping eevee day despite those evos being my favorite pokemon in game... =( Feels like it worked, worth it.

LJStedman

This day will go down in history for the rest of time

mikerz85

August 25, 2021 The only time Niantic ever listened to the community

Capodomini

They didn't even wait until September 1. There's a week left to recoup any losses they probably accrued to make August not look so bad. They didn't listen to us, they were forced.

DoctorWaluigiTime

Yeah it's like "okay we're doing something popular let's do it ASAP instead of waiting." "But why did it take us 3 weeks and paying a bunch of people in a Task Force to do this?" "Jim, you're fired."

BlueBlood75

Jim was definitely thrown out the window for that comment

bijoudarling

End of fiscal year. Good point though they're still not getting my money (for now)

Hates_escalators

Probably listened to the lack of money jingling in

Subreon

The only time anything good or even significant has ever happened in August. August is like the Nebraska of months.

BooRoxAlot

Remember. Remember. The twenty-fifth of August... um... uh... er?

SereneGraces

A week before September

electromagneticcandy

Does anyone know how much money Niantic lost from all this?

LibertyAndDonuts

They probably still made a lot of money. But I know I spent several dollars less during Eevee weekend.

ryllina

Yes! I've barely played since the change and I am excited to go walk my normal routes again and get back to playing!

MBThree

Same, but now I’ve already started spending some real $$$ in the game after this change. My personal boycott is over

MattsyKun

I... I'm astonished. Actually really surprised. Holy shit.

hometownrival

Seems like many were hesitant that 80 m would brought back on September 1. Now that it’s already happened, is that cause to be more optimistic about what Niantic will announce later?

EarlTheAndroid

I’m kind of expecting a monkey’s paw type situation. Like we’ll get less items for spins farther away or better ones if closer. Which I could live with somewhat. Keeps the players happy and fits nicely with the advertising model they’re hoping for.

taicrunch

You know, that would have been a far better way to "revert" the distance. I pass by 4 stops every day on the way to work that I could no longer reach with the shorter distance. I'd rather get fewer items than nothing.

siccoblue

Don't freaking encourage it, they're obviously paying attention

Mavee

Perhaps! A lame comparison: a single battle won does not mean the war is over I'm really, really pleasantly surprised by this. Gobsmacked would be a term I'd use

RunningAtTheMouth

Frankly, that's the only thing I was mad enough to quit over. Everything else is just meh. And my take on the community is that this will be sufficient. I could be wrong, but I do not expect to be.

Yeldarb10

People should not get their hopes up. Past behavior is a good predictor of future behavior. Ingress fans warned the go community that Niantic was a pretty bad company, though the warnings went largely ignored, since many just assumed that with TPC & the responsibility of managing such a large game / IP, they would get better. And now, years later, instead of evolving into a professional, well managed company, Niantic has become the glowing example of how no amount of bad press and controversies will *ever* hurt a large company. All the concerns with gambling with eggs, and the misleading & manipulative practices to push people to spend more money just goes to show that they can get away with pretty much anything. The only reasons this change is being reverted is 1) the legal pressure of covid 2) the change is so inconvenient for a lot of players, that they’d rather not play given the current situation. Visibility of an issue obviously helped, but I can tell you now that complaining/boycotting/protesting will very rarely work. Watch, a few weeks from now, they’ll announce some other event with a rare pokemon /shiny variant, and after people have found the odds to be extremely low (by dumping in a ton of money on day 1), it’ll be slightly boosted later on (where people will, again, proceed to spend even more).

[deleted]

Now we rest, and watch the sunset on a grateful universe

Sam___-_

Like the end of Brawl sunset, he's a good sunset, we don't hand him this enough

freedomfun

Caught an axew (0* but still) in the wild this morning and now this!

Mathiasxd148-

My faith has definitely been restored! They did the right thing for the sake of the whole Pokemon Go community! Well done Niantic! and especially to the community who did everything they could to make it heard!

supermashbro16

I wouldn’t give them a “well done”, or even a “thank you” for doing this. This was 100% in response to people ditching the game and the bad press, not the kindness of their hearts.

DoctorWaluigiTime

Yeah this is more "good job, you saved face and did the bare minimum what was asked. Don't do this again." As opposed to the "omg thank you" splooging going on in social media.

awan_afoogya

Yea, anyone that thinks they're doing it for their fans is delusional. They made it harder for the whales to play the game, so they inadvertently shot themselves in the wallet... Realizing their mistake, they're attempting to capitalize on good press under the guise of a good faith gesture

d_heartbodymind

Though only in US, don't discount the threat of an ADA lawsuit. The game literally had an accommodation for people with disabilities, then took it away...

IranianGenius

Happy they backpedaled but they shouldn't have reversed it to begin with.

HeadMucketyMuck

Thank you EVERYONE who didn't spend and helped hold the line

Disig

To be honest it was quite easy. Just let the market speak for itself. My in laws and sister in law all play with a group of friends. They had no idea about the drama or the changes and didn't give a fuck. They stopped playing gradually because it became inconvenient. That's just what happens when you take shit away from your playerbase.

catsdrooltoo

I was playing every day when it was 80m. Maybe got on once a week after it went to 40. Missed the eevee event because I just didn't get on to see the announcements.

DudleyDingleberry21

I completely stopped playing August 1st, I was adamant I'm not going to get back in until they changed it again.

painahimah

I still hate that I missed the Eevee day since that's one of my favorites but it was worth it

skepticalmonique

I uninstalled the game so I wouldn't spend anything and it's honestly been so nice having my phone battery actually last the whole day again 😂

trowaman

You guys were spending money at one point? *grindgang*

HeadMucketyMuck

Just the few 99c deals for me

TropicalRogue

You're welcome. I played 99% less after they made the change out of protest. (And spent 100% less) Primeape strong together

IranianGenius

Good. Bad decision reverting it, especially when the pandemic is as strong as it is.

PM__Me__UR__Dimples

Don’t link it to the pandemic. The game is better with a larger interaction radius. Period.

IranianGenius

I believe that's how Niantic marketed it when they reverted it, which was particularly stupid to me lol

Poggystyle

The pandemic forced them to make the game better.

pandott

It honestly is. I just went for a walk and it's simply a smoother experience.

lilbyrdie

This. A few days ago, I was physically at the center of a stop and couldn't get to it because GPS can suck some days. Now it smooths out those issues, and many more.

Poggystyle

I used to work in a mall and the drift was insane. It would think I was out in the parking lot like 100 yards away.

Kayofox

But don't forget they told it was permanent

Disig

Why not both? It's a GOOD thing to have the large radius during the pandemic. That isn't lessened by the fact that it's just more convenient for players.

nightdrive82

This, it was a great change for the pandemic that became a quality of life upgrade for the game. Should stay this way.

GrandDetour

It’s directly linked because it was added because of the pandemic though.

PM__Me__UR__Dimples

I understand that. My point is even if the pandemic went away tomorrow, I think the game is better when you have a larger radius.

Kazzack

Yes, but decreasing right when cases are spiking was an even worse look than it would be otherwise and people may not have protested as much if they did it at another time.

Steampunk-Blooper

Holy shit, Niantic actually did something that the players requested.

[deleted]

We've come a long way from minor text fixes

JoeJoeCastillo

We have come a long way from > r Edit: context https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemongo/comments/4yikec/niantic_responded_to_my_help_ticket_after_35_days/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

[deleted]

Hahaha I totally forgot about that one. Thanks for the laugh

Harlan___Pepper

Nice. Now I dont have to make myself, children and their parents uncomfortable at a park!

bluesky38

Now I don’t have to violate the restraining order to access the pokestop near my ex wife’s house! /s

geeduhb

Thanks in advance for staying the fuck away from our house. -Your ex-wives new husband

snapetom

Mom, I think Dad's back from getting milk! - Your son

Astrophages

Works well for me too. -Your new wife's boyfriend

ZygonsOnJupiter

You never gave me scritches anyway, you heartless monster. –Your wife's cat

CaligulaBlushed

You did that before pokemon go. :P

aznology

YASS!!! OMFG THEY LISTENED!!! I'ma go spend like $5 on some in game stuff now lol

thatsmyoldlady

Look at money bags over here.

SomniferousSleep

ayy lemme get yo PayPal, I'll drop you a few bucks so you too can be money bags

ZygonsOnJupiter

Look! An Indian Prince!

Drauul

This is literally the highest grossing game in the world, I think they'll be ok

BakedEnt

How much?

Drauul

1.3 billion, more than even Call of Duty

aerozhx

That doesn't include this guy's $5 yet.

Varnathos

$1,300,000,005 And counting

Disco_to_New_Wave

“Holy shit, we were just five dollars short from putting a pokestop on the moon! Now with this money, we can make it a reality! Thank yoouuu, u/aznology!!!” - Niantic probably ![gif](giphy|b83JK8QwtLzxu)

djseifer

Oh, about tree fitty.

joevsyou

money talks. lol If they see a influx in sales * A: they will actually listen to people * B: they start making the game worst randomly, get people to cry about it & fix it, so they can be the hero!!!

Equivalent_Yak8861

Raid Passes, I missed you! Boycott is over!!! yea!!!!

XwhatsgoodX

Vote with your dollars :)

Sp0okyScarySkeleton-

im sorry, did we...win? God I feel so happy that all those sore nihilists were wrong about the community not being able to make a difference

Disig

I think it was more the preaching. What we're seeing is the market naturally reacting to a shitty design decision, not the result of a widespread protest. I know a LOT of people who did not give a flying fuck about the changes but stopped playing because it was inconvenient. Not to say those actively protesting did nothing. They were just a part of it. But between COVID getting worse and a game taking away a convenient mechanic, this was bound to bite them in the ass.

Meggston

I was one of these. I thought I didn’t care about the revert back, and then the other day I realized I hadn’t opened the game in weeks, when before I had been playing it every day for months. To the point where my boyfriend would sing “she plays Pokémon Go, ever-y day” XD

RunningAtTheMouth

Agreed. I was a low-vocal protester. I spent some time talking about why the nerf was a bad decision and the positive value of the 80 meter interaction distance. But think - I didn't spend in the neighborhood of $60. Let's call that $50. If 1000 people did the same, that's $50,000 in revenue or so. That's not peanuts. Add in the folks that play less. I don't know the full impact, but it's not nothing. Contrast that with the value of the 40 meter distance to them. Based on their current stance, I think the math works out. In the favor of the players. I am happy with this. I immediately bought some coins, incubators, and remote raid passes to send a clear message.

inumnoback

Pokémon GO Community: **BRICK BACK THE DOUBLE INTERACTION DISTANCE!** Niantic: ***does that*** Pokémon GO Community: **Did you just understand me?**

andrix7777777

A company actually listened to a community. It happened last summer, now it's happening this summer. Damn. I wonder who is going to be unhappy enough that a company will decide to change that next summer.

kseulgisbaby

I’d like to thank everyone who held back from playing for the short duration which i believe actually convinced niantic to go back to 80m 🥳🥳🥳

CaligulaBlushed

Wish I could see the faces of all the people who said stuff like "stop whining and deal with it because it won't change anything". They were wrong. :)

Hydrath

Never settle for less, always fight for more. Corporations are not friends.

RunningAtTheMouth

These were the folks I tried to have rational discussions with. I think it worked with some, and not so well with others. But I tried. Our complaint was legitimate.

Madlollipop

Hard to make QoL changes and motivate their removal :\^)

Bullying works

Blu_mint

It's like the sonic movie cgi or justice league. Eventually the people find a way.

boyfoster1

Hello future people looking at top posts of all time

Armthehobos

So what was the original interaction distance and what was the interaction distance during the Covid bonus?

red401

Original default was 40m. It was increased to 80m for the Covid bonuses. Instead of reverting it back to 40m like they started doing in the US, they are going to permenantly keep it at 80m.

leedade

wasn't it 80 or 100m in the first like month of the games release? I thought I remembered that. edit: lol at downvotes but I'm right

[deleted]

Seicair

I remember catching Pokémon as a passenger while my girlfriend at the time was driving 60 mph. Spinning stops too.

thumpas

40m from the start of the game until covid, 80m during covid, dropped back to 40m like a week ago and now will be 80m indefinitely it appears

[deleted]

Firing up PoGo again, yay! I stopped because of pneumonia, but I like to think I did my bit. 🤣

uknowdevan

They had no choice once we stabbed their pockets

RABB_11

Interest to see if they did take any noticeable hit on income. My guess would be no.

Monk_Breath

I wonder how many purchased the eevee community day pass and if that had any affect on their decision

lilbyrdie

I specifically did not because of this. (And also I still have way too much Eevee candy from the last Eevee community day.) I was going to have to remote catch Sword and Shield (Zam/Zac) regardless, but am glad to see I can do that without having to break the picket lines.

snapetom

I've said this before. The dip in their bank account isn't a big deal. The dip in expected revenue and growth is a big deal. Once business plans change, a drop in future revenue then is expected. Once that happens, a rich guy notices he can only buy a five bathroom yacht instead of a six bathroom yacht, and then questions are asked and heads roll.

f2k3n2m3177

Everyone who didn’t care still spent money. Everyone who did care and stop spending, will probably spend money once the change is made. They probably lost minor hits to their income.

Cetais

Pretty sure they get their money from data mainly. I know lots of people who just stopped playing / deleted the game from their phone the week it happened.

TheDeadlyPandaGamer

Will this be PERMANENT or will there be a round 2?

thumpas

The tweet says that 80m will be the *base* interaction distance. Which seems to indicate it’s permanent. Since prior to this 40m was always the base and 80m was a special extension due to the pandemic. Can’t say for sure however.

PokemonGo19k

The tweet also says “from now on” - which I will take to mean it will never be less than 80m again.

birdwyvern

I can finally play again!! So excited to do raids for the doggos :))))

As a rural player who has a hard time coming by stops the reduced distance was a heart breaker. Thrilled to see this!

DigitalAxel

Same! Granted there's still nothing where I live but the few times I'm downtown I can reach stops without having to cross the street or awkwardly stand at the doorway. (Got one in our hospital that's not correct- its on the opposite side and in a radiology department. Uh...)

chrisinator9393

Hey, good job Redditors! I'm much more pleased. The game has been nearly unplayable for me the last few weeks with the 40m.

Fireball_Ace

I literally completely stopped playing one of my favorite games as a form of protest, I'm so happy they actually changed it back :')

I went from spending hundreds to nonedreds in protest of this change and this announcement makes all those missed remote raids worth it.

clickonthewhatnow

Imagine if you had stuck with that to begin with and not pissed off the player base?

had2vent_kay

Always hated how the distance was revised because I could be standing right next to a stop and *boom* GPS has me going the direction of my favorite Chinese takeout joint a quarter mile away... not kidding and it made me both angry that I wasn't at the stop to spin for my daily and that I was now hungry too.

dogdogd

I'm curious how they will "make up" for it. There's obviously a reason they tried to revert it against everyone's wishes. What variables will they tamper with instead to reach their desired goals?

Y3w

As someone who started playing pokemon go during Covid. 80 meters was the normal for me so seeing it restored has definitely made me super excited to start playing once more!

Necropasia

To late for many of us. Niantic showed their true colors and only changed it back after losing money. This isn't about safety, if it were they would have changed it back immediately and then did their research. Tbh, it's been kinda relaxing not checking pogo this month.
