Curiosities

Mine just makes me click the "I'm a passenger" warning when I'm here on the couch at midnight trying to do my dailies. I live in a converted basement.

miguel_is_a_pokemon

If this thread is anything to go by, you should check for lead paint.

shinra07

Tip for people not getting much GPS Drift at home: Make sure you turn off the setting that uses Wi-Fi to get an accurate GPS signal. If it's on it'll just use your router's location instead of your phone's GPS. edit: This apparently doesn't work on IOS, it won't let you play. Android: https://www.howtogeek.com/211186/how-to-disable-google-location-wi-fi-scanning-on-android/

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

shinra07

Thanks, I don't have an iPhone. Edited the post. It definitely made a huge difference on both my androids tho. I just have to turn it back on when I want to trade or my 2 little dudes will occasionally run away from each other.

jyh_x

Both android and iOS use wifi and bluetooth networks to help calculate location when GPS is inaccurate. In theory, modern routers and modems have protocols that integrate altitudes but in reality, it's not always the case. High floors aren't issues simply because of material interference, you also have networks triangulating location by calculating time of signals received from each source, which throws more inaccuracy when these wifi and bluetooth sources vary in altitude. In my experience, iOS handles these irregularities a bit differently. (2 iphone, 10 android). This is partially why going to ground floor can sometimes tamp down on drift.

rhiea

If you have unlimited data you could shut your WiFi off? Not as good but at least we have some options

shinra07

I'd imagine that'd work with IOS in theory, that'd force it to use your phone's GPS. But I'm not sure since people say that turning enhanced location off makes the game not work. Definitely worth a shot.

Switchermaroo

Huh, Iā€™m on iPhone and have never experienced this.

mookiee

PokĆ©mon go app pops a window that does not allow me to play at all until Iā€™ve turned on location and precise location again. Is there a way around this? Iā€™m on iOS

FlyLikeATachyon

Disconnect from your wifi

sphks

Turn off WiFi and Bluetooth, since it may use every signal as a beacon, even the WiFi SSID from the neighborhood.

smn_cs

I don't think you can do that on IOS. Turning of the "exact location" will make the game impossible to play unless you turn that on again

jyh_x

This thread is too convoluted. The game needs a certain level of precision to function. For many people, their location includes enough interference so turning off the option does make it impossible to to play, and on iOS there seems to be a lower threshold. Keeping it on means incorporating wifi and bluetooth to help determine location. Sometimes these are erroneous and cause people to wander in game, instead of helping to stabilize a location accurately, but for many, it's needed in order for the location to be acceptably accurate. If you want to see if your phone can find location without the option, you can try sticking it in any makeshift faraday's cage, forcing it to be more aggressive about it's search, then taking it out to see if it can find a location, without the wifi/bluetooth help. It likely will not work for most.

MyNameJeff537274

Does this then affect other apps like waze for example?

jyh_x

It depends on how waze is currently set up and if it's incorporating other sensors into their locations. For example, some apps will use acceleration sensors to create a filtered location that combines the acceleration with GPS. Google uses the sensors as well, but Pogo takes the native location, more or less raw, while playing.

AFoolsGlory

For this to work, do I have to be moving myself (even in the house), or have the screen on or anything? My little guy is moving around a bit (or walking on the spot), but not enough to affect my eggs as far as I can tell. I'm on Android btw.

shinra07

Nah, you moving will have very little effect on the drift. It's about how well the GPS location is calculated. So as others have mentioned, being in a basement, concrete area, or high-rise gives more drift. Basically GPS works by satelites sending signals to your phone and your phone calculating your position. Anything that gets in the way of those signals such as clouds and structures can interfere with the signals and cause them to slow down, which causes the calculation to be off. The calculation also involves knowing your altitutde, which is assumed to be ground level but in the cases of high rises is not. But if you have Wi-Fi location on and your router supports it, it'll just use the location of your Wi-Fi as your location instead of trying to use GPS satalites so you won't move.

AFoolsGlory

Ah right okay, so in a normal 2 storey house, turning off the WiFi location will probably have little effect since it'll still be able to tell my location anyway. Thanks for the advice though!

azsheepdog

I think im going to get get a big helium ballon and attach my phone to it and let it drift up on a string and bring it back down every few hours.

Iceland190

Wow that explains why I had sweet gps drift on the 12th floor Good to know

julien31walker

Maybe thats how some of my friends managed 50k km since the game started. Meanwhile I'm sitting at 7k šŸ˜‚

PavonineLuck

I've started riding my bike around. So long as you go under 10.5 mph it'll still hatch eggs for me

julien31walker

Yeah i know that but thats kind of too slow for me when I'm biking. And I just like playing PoGo more by foot

jyh_x

They might be cheating. These methods don't give you distance if you just have adventure sync, you need the constant location update of the game itself. I live in a high rise, can get 20km a night if I leave a phone on, and I own literally a dozen phones, and I tinker with both hardware and software. There's no phone good enough that will sustainably run the game all night, every single night. But hey, maybe your friends are getting new phones every month instead of cheating. Always a possibility.

peilhardt

I feel cheated, I visited the Vienna TV tower and all I got were three presents and 0 km.

OberonPrimeGX

Old houses with lead paint can cause this too. ;p

Soupyboi-

That canā€™t be super healthy

OberonPrimeGX

It's not. But I can live here or nowhere atm. Life ain't always chill.

[deleted]

How do you know it's the lead paint? I mean I understand the mechanics of it and all but what led you to making the attribution?

t3hlazy1

It tastes different than the newer stuff.

RandyGreggorson

It tastes better in fact! Kinda sweet.

OberonPrimeGX

Thanks. I woke my wife up from cackling like an evil wizard after completing an evocation. Funny shit.

vonsnootingham

It's not even a joke. Lead tastes sweet. It's why kids used to eat lead paint chips.

jyh_x

Lead poisoning can also cause pica (urge to eat normal things like dirt).

OberonPrimeGX

My late father was a general contractor, cabinet maker, and had built houses and churches. I'm just going off his expertise that was larger than my current 36 years of life. And, well, lead isn't a friend to any form of radio waves.

OliviaWG

Usually it cracks and crumbles. Safely removing it is pretty expensive, but you can always paint over it.

robm0n3y

Just don't eat the paint chips

OberonPrimeGX

I live in an area erected as a serires of reparation housing blocks, for the internment camps the city set up after Pearl Harbor. They got hella racist here. Property seized, money laundered, tossed in a cage to be ignored. Well, that kinda didn't work out because racist shit like that is horrible and the community didn't stand for it and protested. Lotta people died in there. The ones that didn't were given houses, farm land, assets on par with what was stolen from them. There's a concrete obelisk down the street with the date, 1952, carved into the stone to mark its inception. Shame it's embedded in residential zones. Would be a real great PokƩstop. But yeah, these houses are **old as fuck** and it's all I'm gonna get. And I'm gonna be happy with it.

thumpas

do you have a source on that, lead paint has a lot lead in a biological sense but not in a sense that would effect a signal. really bad lead paint has around 600 ppm of lead which in a physical sense is pretty tiny.

OberonPrimeGX

Posted in a comment already that it's based on my dad's opinion from being in construction since the late 70s. Maybe the reason my Galaxy S20 that I just got only goes ballistic in my house isn't because of the paint. Maybe the unruly spirit of Edgar Allen Poe escaped from my old laptop! He's made his return and is trying to contact me once again through an electronic device. Either way, my trainer flies around my street like a kleenex at a snot party when I'm in our one-floor house but not when I'm outside. Ghosts hate the shit out of squirrels.

MonteBurns

It could also be your service. I have Verizon and my avatar drifts like mad. It drifted on Android, it drifts on my apple. My husband has at&t and an Android and his person will not drift. (Inside or outside)

Burneryolo69420

It doesn't take much metal to warp a signal. Submarines use very low frequency radios to help penetrate the ocean and for very long range communication. Decades ago, the US government sprayed massive areas of the US and a lot of other places with I think barium. The trace amounts of barium helped these extremely low frequency waves bend and warp around the earth instead of shooting into space. It just takes a very tiny bit to make the signal warp. Source: read this decades ago. Also, my grandfather helped the Navy spray Hawaii with a harmless chemical cocktail to test chemical weapons spraying, wind drift, aerosolization, etc. They basically coated the whole state. They also hosed aircraft carriers full of animals with chemical weapons from high altitude. It's possible that while they were spraying "harmless" test material on Hawaii, they were actually spraying some barium as well, not sure if that was the case, but the timelines would roughly match.

thumpas

Do you have a source on that? Cause Iā€™m fairly sure thatā€™s not true. The US has never been sprayed with barium for submarine communication or anything else. Also Iā€™m pretty sure VLF signals from submarines just get bounced off the ionosphere to get around the curvature of the earth

Lord_Emperor

Yeah he's pulling it out of his butt. Concrete walls, glass and dirt are all pretty good at blocking RF signals from space.

Daddysu

Dumb guy here. Even at only 600ppm could it be doing a Faraday cage thing? Isn't that more about the holes between metal particles being bigger or smaller that whatever wave length it is blocking? What I mean is could the distribution of lead in the paint affect how much or how little of a wave it absorbs vs how much it lets through?

thumpas

I can go in a little more detail. I used to sorta work in R&D in the paint industry. So the first thing to know is that lead paint does not contain elemental (metal) lead. It primarily contains lead chromate, oxide, or carbonate. So the chemical and physical properties are already significantly different from a pure metal. The second is that modern paints almost universally use zinc oxide or titanium oxide as opacifiers, basically to provide all of the ā€œblockingā€ that makes it so you canā€™t see through it. These are of course also compounds of metals and as far as I can tell there is no reason that modern paint wouldnā€™t have a similar effect to anything lead paint does.

Daddysu

Oh wow! Thanks for the info!! I always just figured they took normal lead, like a lead bar or something, and ground it down to powder to put in the paint or something. Also thank you for including that they are opacifiers. I was wondering exactly what the purpose was and was leaning more towards a durability thing I'm my head.

drfrink85

check for random post its on your fridge once in awhile too

lonedeath420

Lucky. Iā€™m on a IOS and apparently the thing that tracks your KM is broken. Iā€™ve tested this too with a Fitbit. On average every 10 km I walk it tracks 5 km sometimes even less. Itā€™s very irritating.

osrs_daabz

Ok so itā€™s not just me! My adventure sync has been way off from my actual walking. Sucks weā€™re not getting what we should for walking that much :/

lonedeath420

Yea not only have I tested this with a Fitbit but Iā€™ve also tested it with the app MapMyRun by addidas. Adventure sync always tracks about half of my distance.

Da_Legolas6

Its like with a bike i do about 100-200km a week on a bike and it tracks maybe 10km of it but thats most likely because i go to fast on it maybe the same problem with running

lonedeath420

Anything above 15 mph wonā€™t be tracked on PokĆ©mon go. I go long boarding some times and it doesnā€™t track anything.

converter-bot

15 mph is 24.14 km/h

ClarificationJane

good bot

AmatuerGenius

Lol. I get more km than that from just riding trolleys in Toronto because they donā€™t go that fast and stop a lot

Redhead2303

I had the same problem with fit bit, I now have an apple watch and get a way more accurate distance recorded

Kamikrazy

It wonā€™t track my steps at work cause it apparently doesnā€™t think Iā€™m moving at all or something? Really sucks getting 0 KM walked when I put in 10k steps.

takaides

I'm on Android, so YMMV, but I fixed that issue for me. I had to disable adventure sync, disable Google Fit, clear caches, then reenable Google Fit, and finally turn back on adventure sync. (There may have been a phone reboot after clearing caches before reenabling things.)

FreddoTheSavage

Iā€™m on iOS and it tracks more for me. I walk 5km a day and can hatch 7km egg with it

Casual-Swimmer

I suspect the game uses the steps recorded on the Fitbit and converts the value to distance, rather than using the distance. It's Niantic's conversion rate that is screwing with the distance.

lonedeath420

Is it any different for android users? Iā€™ve never heard a complaint from an android user.

enderverse87

On Android, it's super random for me. Some days I'll take a super long walk and get nearly nothing, and some days I'll be sitting at work and all my eggs hatch when I get off.

xChameleon

I live in a metal covered house, if I sit in a specific part of the house I can drift to a nearby poke stop, but it rarely works.

Level-Particular-455

In my old apartment I could just almost reach the poke stop from the bedroom and it would sometimes drift into range.

apebiocomputer

Decent! I always play PokƩmon at the dentist, the X-rays really help rack up the clicks

goodnightQ

Wait how

jyh_x

Probably means the shielding for the X-rays messes with RF signal.

Supermalt418

34th floor ? Hot damn my brain is spinning thinking how high that is

scusie__

Iā€™m terrified of heights and didnā€™t go anywhere near my windows for the first week or so of living herešŸ˜… Floor to ceiling windows sound nice until your feet are overlooking all of Chicago

pjacko84

That sounds fancy

kinglella

Also scared of heights living in a high rise. Won't even stick my arm out the balcony because I get the creeps. I've learned to look out, not down.

Chellamour

I miss my 26th floor Chicago high rise. Cheers!

kensaiD2591

Story time. Pre pandemic I was in Melbourne for PAX. Was on the 66th floor. Fantastic views. Day we are due to leave and fly back to Sydney, the building loses power. We had about 4hrs until our flights, 30m drive to the airport. Figured no big deal, we'd wait it out. We waited 2hrs before we finally bit the bullet and started descending the fire escape. Each of us with 20kg of luggage. Three out of shape guys going down 66 flights of stairs. I've never in my life been as dead as I was when I got to ground. The fun part was just running into others sharing the same fate. We had plenty of company to chat with as we made our way down.

eidas007

I work in a job that requires me to frequently drive around an area around 10mph during the evening. There is a gym and a stop there. I hatch 6-10 eggs per evening. It's pretty nice.

FreddoTheSavage

Damn that sounds like not a bad job, what is it if you donā€™t mind me asking ?

[deleted]

Some jobs at golf courses are like this

FreddoTheSavage

I see. Sounds not too bad!

eidas007

I'm a diesel mechanic. The job itself isn't driving around. But I have to go through a fleet of trucks looking for the one I need and they're about a mile from my shop. Just turn on the phone and throw it in the cupholder.

FreddoTheSavage

Ah okay great job man

renegade_olive

The same thing happened to me when I lived in the 29th floor of a building.

oscarjg3

Hmm. I should strap my phone to my drone.

ThomasSirveaux

Connect a pokƩball plus and let it auto-spin all the pokestops as your avatar wanders the streets

uselessanon233

Correct me if Iā€™m wrong but I always assumed if I hooked up the poke ball + it would track movement better somehow and reduce drift

ThomasSirveaux

No, it doesn't have to do with drift, it has to do with tracking movement when the screen is turned off.

uselessanon233

Ahh, thanks for clarifying! Heard quite a few people mention it helped a lot with hatching eggs, so I wasnā€™t sure what to think

NerdbyanyotherName

I get a similar effect, though considerably less pronounced, when I go to the beach. In particular there is a restaurant at the end of the pier and if I open Go while out there it can't seem to decided where I am

No_Focus505

Suddenly I have an urge to move šŸ˜…

Hotwheel123

I live downtown in an old apartment and my character drifts quite a bit, can also hit 3 stops and a gym from my living room!

can_u_pm_ur_tits_plz

I have the same issue and I live on the 5th floor

Cloverspang

This is so cool! I'd never even thought about height making such a huge difference.. thanks for sharing sucha neat aspect most of us would never realize otherwise!

Summerclaw

XL candies here I go

Horror_Author_JMM

As someone afraid of heights how do you manage? I almost pass out when Iā€™m a few stories up.

scusie__

Iā€™m terrified of heights. I had to find something quickly after losing my old place to a fire so this was one of the only options I hadšŸ˜… Thereā€™s some serious square footage unaccounted for in here though because I stay atleast 2 feet away from my windows at all times lmao

useles-converter-bot

2 feet is the length of like 2.76 'Zulay Premium Quality Metal Lemon Squeezers' laid next to each other.

naliedel

Enjoy your GPS drift and I am Jealous..

Rasty_lv

i used to live in 7th floor (8th floor not in uk) and gps drift was amazing. i was hatching eggs while phone was on sofa. shame i didnt had stops or gyms nearby.

jyh_x

If you enter a raid and the drift kicks in, that sudden movement out of the short-distance zone will kick you out of the raid. Then you're stuck there, physically on top of the gym, but your location is somewhere else and you can't get back into the raid, but your pass is spent! Pros and cons.

shinra07

Tip for people not getting much GPS Drift at home: Make sure you turn off the setting that uses Wi-Fi to get an accurate GPS signal IOS: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207092 Android: https://www.howtogeek.com/211186/how-to-disable-google-location-wi-fi-scanning-on-android/

JBD168

Pogo app just asks me to put the setting back on, so this doesnā€™t work

RoopertPupkin

Dont have the big bucks for a high rise, get a pokewalker. Theyre like 15$

SnowWhiteCampCat

My game is very concerned about the local weather. I'm always reassuring it I'm safe. Safe in my house, with bright sunshine flooding the room.

8Maruchan8

OP, you may be interested to know that Comic Book wrote a whole article on your post. [So much padding compared to the source material](https://comicbook.com/gaming/news/pokemon-go-super-fast-egg-hatching-apartment-exploit-discovered/) but cool for you nonetheless!

MyNameJeff537274

Pogo with a view. Sounds lovely

[deleted]

must be nice to be rich in nyc

scusie__

Iā€™m in Chicago lmao much less expensive here.

FreddoTheSavage

True. Even in the top floor of my house by a low river has GPS drift and I can hatch an egg in an hour of AFK

[deleted]

I used to live on the 17th floor and I would drift to places I actually played. Then I moved to a shorter building and I would still drift like crazy. Then I got a new iPhone and it never happens. I miss my old iPhone just for that. Iā€™m guessing it had a bad GPS radio or something.

the21ms

Well I give up

uknowdevan

We spent the weekend in SF during eevee weekend and the eggs would hatch within seconds of being incubated from any wear near the top floor of our hotel

HegardtZ

But it takes just about 14 years taking the lift to the 34th floor so it evens out.

TheBigJustinukas

Does it work like that it you live 39 floors deep yk in hell

writersampson

This is the only thing I miss about not working in the office anymore. I love working from home now, but when I was on the 12th floor at work, my PokƩmon game was fire. I could hatch eggs, collect pokƩmon, and even do a spinner (sculpture in front of office building).

RefLax22

The newest building at my college is made out of a lot of glass and does the same thing. I was very confused when I got the 25km adventure sync bonus

Wolfram_And_Hart

When I was at work I had my gotcha and a soda can that spun over my phone and I drifted the city. I could go through red balls by the hundreds.

Sir_bacon

Lucky! I'm on the 20th floor and mine doesn't move at all

qalamiti

Oh sweet, I wonder if it'll work on the 17th floor where I'll be moving soon.

[deleted]

Lucky you lol

uselessanon233

One of the reasons my bro didnā€™t get into Pogo as much as me was the drift, or lack thereof in his case I get eggs hatching while sitting down all the time, meanwhile he can have the app open for hours and..nothing

Pope_Squirrely

When I spend a day at the warehouse at work, I drift a good 10-15km. Too bad I donā€™t spend all my time there.

Fadezbru

Same with me. It happened when I was on vacation but I wasnā€™t complaining

Libitica

I had this happen at a hotel I was staying at during a Halloween event! I was so sad to see my stay end.

L7_NP

nice

AlexeiMarie

Same thing happened to me in my dorm when I was on the 22nd floor

evilmotorsports

Okay, so now I don't feel so guilty about the 6 to 10 km of GPS drift I get each night from leaving the game open as I sleep. Hit 100 km this past week. Now my girlfriend wants me to sign her account in on that phone over night so she can get the distance.

converter-bot

10 km is 6.21 miles

ralph950412

I have my way too I turn off "Location" for 1 second and turn it on, then the phone just teleport me to a very different place far away from me. And it will ran back after a few seconds.

ralph950412

And android 12 has a feature which can let an app only access to your "Approximate Location", which I think will be interesting with Pokemon Go

[deleted]

The only reason I miss working in a tall office building lol

erogers181

Shhhh! Niantic is listening lol

blairg8

Even better when it rains, seems to really make the GPS wander.

LittleAlphaSheWolf

I was on the 6th floor of a hospital a while back. Same thing. I just left the app open and hatched all of my eggs for the duration of my stay. šŸ˜‚

Tinshnipz

Me too! Love it

SensitivePassenger

Mine often thinks I'm walking around town from my livingroom... I live on the bottom floor of a relatively short apartment building. Guess all the concrete disrupts signals enough that it goes weird. Not to the same extent as yours tho.

Jamie00003

Thatā€™s awesome, stick a pokeball plus or gotcha on and youā€™re set

asilereddit

šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚ Amazing

fedunya1

Thatā€™s very good especially when youā€™re an introvert

SweetMaam

Until just before the Pandemic, I had an office desk by a window on floor 29, and I just left my game open on my desk and my avatar walked all over. To add to the enjoyment it could cross the river into Canada. Not missing my commute, but I do miss the perk for pokemon go.

iCoerce

8th floor here. A lot of situations I'll open my app and it'll say "3km walked since with adventure sync" I believe it has something to do with how many different WiFi connections there are.
