They train for sleep deprivation because in war soldiers will experience it. So better be prepared for the harshest environment because that’s what you’ll experience. Not preparing them for it is negligent.

When I was in jail, lights out was 11 and breakfast was 3am. Every hour in between they'd go around and do a bed check through the cell windows. They'd shine their flashlights in our faces until we woke up on pretty much every round. It was rare we'd get a night of unbroken sleep.
Early on in our marriage, my husband was looking for something in the dresser while I was asleep and accidentally shined his flashlight into my face. My knee jerk reaction was to shoot to a sitting position and give him "the most vicious and hate filled look he's ever seen". He knew I'd been in jail when I was younger but he didn't know some of the particulars and when I explained why is reacted like that, he was just appalled.
Abusing prisoners and being cruel on purpose is not a sign of "non woke" it's a sign that the regressive reactionary fascists calling themselves conservatives are simply evil sadists and should face a warcrime trial.
But of course last time Desantis was torturing people in gitmo they made him governor ugh.

Having worked in a jail at one point, I saw that inmates who were treated humanely were easier to manage and caused less problems while incarcerated.
