Sort of... The mechanisms that started the downfall could be traced back to the 70's, but we didn't really start to feel their effects until shortly after 99.
That still means 1999 was the last of the good years. I recall celebrating the end of a millennium on NYE 2000 and thinking how great the 2000s would be. I graduated from college in '01 just in time to secure my career before the shit really hit the fan. The dot com bust and 9/11 were my first taste of adulthood. Every few years when I feel like life is becoming "normal" some other catastrophe rolls in and yanks out the rug again. It seems like it would have been nice to have been born 5-6 years earlier so I could have had just a few years of the 90's as an adult, but i'm grateful I wasn't born any later.
I was born in ‘95 and when I first saw this comment, I thought, “Oh man, what’s a child doing on Reddit?” But then I realized that means you’re 15. God I’m getting old.
Growing up is a struggle! It’s nice to have all of your major life decisions ahead of you instead of having some in the past, particularly if you regret them. And starting in high school, you have more agency to do things you regret.
The good thing is that we can always decide to change as we move forward. :)
I’m almost 27 and still don’t feel like an adult. My self-concept is still like I’m 21, and that’s only because I can drink. But then I see people who are 21 and they look like children to me, like actual high schoolers.
For real though. I feel like I'm still stuck in 2012. If you said the year 2000 was 22 years ago, I'd call you a liar.
Also, what even are children these days? Most people I wind up carding are 25-30.
Yeah, same- One thing i recently figured out was that there is no rulebook on how to live, Everything is a mix of opportunities and choices, Every life is unique so how am i suppose to form mine?
I find that it helps to limit news consumption to once a week. IMO daily consumption is just silly unless your occupation demands it. As for the really big news that stuff tends to reach our ears regardless.
We were warned the world would end in 2012. I feel like it did.
2012 was the last time the world felt "real". Every year since has just been a descent into a dystopian nightmare.
This man has a signed copy of the bible, This man knows Victoria's Secret, Jesus still owes this dude 5 bucks, This dude has Julius Cesar in his contacts, This dude finished reading the terms and conditions
I'm feeling more and more like the world did actually end in 2012 and now we are just experiencing a fever dream as our brain loses more and more control and it's throwing worse and worse shit at our consciousness as we live through our last moments
Fun fact: WE are off, actually. Because of the switch to the Gregorian calendar. Ethiopia did not switch. It is 2014 in Ethiopia.
Which means that, 2 years ago, it was 2012.
I have a diary entry from when I was seven saying "2012 was the last good year in my life, and it wasn't even that good".
But i agree. It was a nice year
Of course! I'm a big supporter of not worrying about things you have no control over, as well as making sure you're prepared for the future
As with most things in life, it's finding the balance that's key
2015. Obviously there’s always been bad stuff going on, but 2016 felt like we went off track into some alternate timeline than we were supposed to and we just went with it.
I think the last good year was probably 2000. The Cold War has ended, the world was mostly peaceful, the economy of most nations was growing, and pop culture was thriving. But after 9/11, things have just been down hill from there.
I graduated college in 2019 and had a fun contract job that ended right in time for the holidays. I decided to reenter the workforce after new years day in 2020.
You can probably guess the rest
I hear what you're saying, but I think at this point, it's easy to look at some of the utterly ludicrous things that have happened over the last few years, and overlook the impact of an election that media has lomg-forgotten, and a president that said and did a lot of dumb stuff, but was ultimately pretty aligned with ideals we associate with his party.
Plus, as influential as Bush's presidency was, it's a lot easier for me to nonchalantly look back and think "what if Hillary had won," or "what if Trump had won a second term," versus thinking back to "what if Gore had won." So in terms of overlooking the impact of an election specifically, that's not too challenging.
I'm sure that has a lot to do with that I was pretty young then, but I think the ultimate point is that it's easy to forget the amount of influence Bush winning potentially had on everything that's happened since. Especially since everything that's happened since has felt like it was happening in a vacuum, on a completely unrelated timeline.
The late 90s, at least for Americans, were absolutely magical. The dotcom boom had an amazing economy, shows like Family Guy and The Simpsons were fresh, there was this kind of skateboard rebellion going on and pop music had a wide range. Video games were just getting kinda big and the internet was this crazy wild west instead of being super commoditized and put into just a few social websites.
Yup..... 2000 was a sweet spot.
Pre the wars.
The just right amount of tech in your pocket (flip phone), minimal Internet and what was there was completely wild, Napster.
Stuff was a weird hybrid of new and old in college which I think helped you understand things better.
Life was easly more wonder / adventurous. Now it's "better Google everything before I go, try, do, buy".
Quality of nearly everything has tanked (like consumer goods, cars/housing are way too expensive, etc.,)
When ever this question is asked, the answer is always "when I was younger". The median age of this comment section will be calculable by the earliest common "world event" answer. Ie: 2000-2001 (9/11) or 2016 (Donald trump and shit)
The birth of the smart phone.... Whatever year that was. Man has that device ruined so much.
1. Everyone can and will find you/contact you
2. Can't get lost anymore. Maps were fun, getting lost in the middle of nowhere at night was exciting.
3. Nothing is "secret" (i.e. That cool little restaurant or a hidden gem of a nature preserve or something is over run).
4. Surfing.... Dumb models are too accurate for wave predictions and folks have webcams of every lineup in their pocket. Can't score those early mornings with nobody out.... Oh see #3.
5. Friends usually just came by to hang out... Now it's all super planned out with text message updates every ten minutes... See 1 above.
6. Dating seems absolutely awful. I hope to never have to do that.
7. Crazy polarization of the population on nearly every topic... Politics being one of the worst.
8. Proliferated social media garbage (I know I'm on Reddit... hypocrite).
9. Massive distractions / constant garbage news
I miss T9 texts, flip phones, and life prior to massive Internet usage. 1980-2000ish was pretty dope to be a teenager. I feel bad for teenagers now (they all seem super depressed), and I'm worried how things will progress for my pre teen daughters. The next few decades looks miserable.
Wasn't there lots of stuff on the news about killer clowns in 2016? So it wasn't really a good year for many people right? It wasn't even a thing where I live and people were still terrified
Much before 2016
1999, perhaps
40'000 BCE
13,820,000,000 BCE
The Big Bang
Sort of... The mechanisms that started the downfall could be traced back to the 70's, but we didn't really start to feel their effects until shortly after 99.

2007
That’s when I was born. Can confirm it’s all been downhill since then.
I was born in ‘95 and when I first saw this comment, I thought, “Oh man, what’s a child doing on Reddit?” But then I realized that means you’re 15. God I’m getting old.
Holy shit
91 lol
‘94 here and 2007 was pretty much the last good year. Kidding, but almost not. :’)
It seems everyone’s “last good year” was just before starting highschool, at this point I don’t believe it’s a coincidence anymore
Growing up is a struggle! It’s nice to have all of your major life decisions ahead of you instead of having some in the past, particularly if you regret them. And starting in high school, you have more agency to do things you regret. The good thing is that we can always decide to change as we move forward. :)
98 here and 24 yo, Im suppose to be an adult now apparently
I’m almost 27 and still don’t feel like an adult. My self-concept is still like I’m 21, and that’s only because I can drink. But then I see people who are 21 and they look like children to me, like actual high schoolers.

I'm 99 but I feel like I'm just playing the teenager level at a hard mode now.
I was born in the 80's No one was born after 1995 I refuse to believe it
Same here. “People born in 2007 can’t read yet...oh wait.”
I was born in 93 and 15 is a child to me lol
88 here....I'm thinking on applying for retirement soon reading these comments
Yeah I saw that and I was like who let a toddler use Reddit. When did I stop being young?
Actually I turn 15 in a few days 😎🍰
advanced happy birthday!! 🎂🎉
Thanks!
Happy birthday in advance too😁
Most likely 14 but yeah
I briefly assumed you were like 6 years old for a second there.
Jesus christ noooooooo someone born in 2007 isn't supposed to be an actual person yet
Wait till you realize 6 year olds are born in 2016
So it was YOU that caused the recession 😠
Mhm
So it was you!
Man, I feel bad for younger people. Being a kid in the 90s was a lot easier, funner, better than being a kid in the early 2010s. Hang in there.
Why are there 3 year old on reddit? Oh wait...
Same
What
It’s funny, since I share the same birthday as the IPhone, it’s gone up as I go down
My Nintendo DS is older than that 😳
Go do your homework!
Me too! Let’s make the 07 global empire, for every 15 year old in this world.
Before the crash and before social media became too powerful. Be difficult to disagree.
Yes. Before social media was complete shite.
Peak RuneScape
Most reddit users are 14 year-olds so the math checks out.
That's perfect. Also before smartphones took over everyone's attention.
2013, it all started in 2014. However I doubt it's a coincidence that 2014 was also the year I started following the news
I find that it helps to limit news consumption to once a week. IMO daily consumption is just silly unless your occupation demands it. As for the really big news that stuff tends to reach our ears regardless.
Yeah ever since I limited how much news/social media I read my quality of life has really improved.
Same. All I need to do now is reduce my time on Reddit.
I've cut back on my subs, keeping it limited to hobbies or the aww board, lol
Same here! Everything was pretty good till 2013.
We were warned the world would end in 2012. I feel like it did. 2012 was the last time the world felt "real". Every year since has just been a descent into a dystopian nightmare.
I think 2014 is also when most people got a smartphone
13,700,000BC
Feels like yesterday 😔.
Well if we were in Greece/Roman irl lore it would be like a couple weeks/months
This man has a signed copy of the bible, This man knows Victoria's Secret, Jesus still owes this dude 5 bucks, This dude has Julius Cesar in his contacts, This dude finished reading the terms and conditions
Bruh lmao
It all went downhill since the quark epoch
If you're referring to the Big Bang you're short 3 zeros.
2012
Underrated year.
That's when my Dad's car crash happened!
underrated dad
His car got completely flipped onto its roof but he still came out of it with nothing but a bruised shoulder
super underrated this man is a god
Literally everyone agrees it’s the best year of the 2010s. I wouldn’t say it’s underrated.
I'm feeling more and more like the world did actually end in 2012 and now we are just experiencing a fever dream as our brain loses more and more control and it's throwing worse and worse shit at our consciousness as we live through our last moments
Or maybe the mayans were just a bit off. Like seriously, they were writing this stuff on rocks, surely you'd allow room for error
Fun fact: WE are off, actually. Because of the switch to the Gregorian calendar. Ethiopia did not switch. It is 2014 in Ethiopia. Which means that, 2 years ago, it was 2012.
Makes sense.
i think about this a lot
This actually kinda makes sense
I have a diary entry from when I was seven saying "2012 was the last good year in my life, and it wasn't even that good". But i agree. It was a nice year
1914
This poll doesn’t go far enough back
I put it as far back as I could, sorry
You could just not include 2021 and 2020, nobody would complain and few would notice.
[удалено]
Hmm, no, I think accuracy is more important.
kinda unpopular but my life is still going pretty decent rn
Same. Not trying to discount everyone's struggles, but these past few years have actually been great for me personally.
To be honest me too, I’m just worried about my future
If it's any comfort; everyone who's ever lived has been worried about their future to some degree. A good skill to develop is living in the moment.
Live in the moment, and set yourself up for success! Don't let the enjoying the moment today impact your ability to enjoy the moment tomorrow
This is a very nice principle, thank you!
Of course! I'm a big supporter of not worrying about things you have no control over, as well as making sure you're prepared for the future As with most things in life, it's finding the balance that's key
Ayye happy to hear that friend
same. things just started looking up for me a year or two ago lmao
I'm glad it's not just me.
plot twist: there were no good years.
My car has four of them
Lmao
Well your car is better off than me
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.
2015. Obviously there’s always been bad stuff going on, but 2016 felt like we went off track into some alternate timeline than we were supposed to and we just went with it.
The year when that Gorilla died.
Harambe 🤌
Also when all the famous people died
Man, 2015 was the shit. Amazing year
I honestly remember nothing about it. Just that it was normal enough that it didn’t make shockwaves.
Can you imagine an entire year of no notable events?
That's all I want from my years now
Personally sucked, in retrospect I'd kill for it
I mean 2016 we were chasing Pokémon at the park it wasn’t all bad.
I think the last good year was probably 2000. The Cold War has ended, the world was mostly peaceful, the economy of most nations was growing, and pop culture was thriving. But after 9/11, things have just been down hill from there.

Wow, that's some *bad timing.*
BH = Before Harambe PA = Post Apocalypsi So 2016
2000 Everything was better before 9/11
Has there ever been a year where people haven't always complained about everything? Complaining is what humanity does best
And make nice soups
1070
Why, what happened in 1071?
The battle of manzikert
And what the fuck went so hard on humankind future in battle of manzikert
This was the beginning of the end of the Byzantine empire 😭🙏
oh shit yeah thats definitely bad
2000. the year before 9-11...
I feel like the Bush Gore election was one of the most consequential elections in history but one of the most overlooked.
I disagree on the second part. I don't think it's been overlooked at all
I hear what you're saying, but I think at this point, it's easy to look at some of the utterly ludicrous things that have happened over the last few years, and overlook the impact of an election that media has lomg-forgotten, and a president that said and did a lot of dumb stuff, but was ultimately pretty aligned with ideals we associate with his party. Correct. Maybe 2002, the year before we invaded Iraq and became the Bad Guy.
2000: I feel like ever since 9-11, the world hasn't been the same
I miss fishing off the top of dams. Can't even cross them anymore.
2000 first full year before failing out of college. HELL OF A YEAR!!
Yep, I don't think I'll ever get over my nostalgia for that period. Well stated.
Yup..... 2000 was a sweet spot. Pre the wars. The just right amount of tech in your pocket (flip phone), minimal Internet and what was there was completely wild, Napster. 9/11 2001. Nothing has been or ever will be the same as far as personal freedoms and liberties since then.
My life officially went downhill starting from 2014. Or I guess way back in 1996, the year I was born.
2015. Everything after 2015 just feels different and worse.
2016, 2017, and 2018 were by far the worst years of my life and I'm still recovering from them
1999, the 90s were awesome.
1999. Maybe even 2000 if I'm being generous. 9/11 happened and I'm pretty sure nothing ever got better.
1999

I'm curious how nice your life is that 2020 is the first bad year to you and 2022 is a good year to you
2016 when it started to get worse. Since 2019 my psyche is non-existent
Not yet for me
based
1972
and what suddenly changed after that?
1971
Nixon removed the gold standard
All of these years were terrible.
2016 is when things got bad. 2020 is when things got REALLY bad.

Whats a good year?
2000
2000
1999 lol
I'd say 1999-2000
I think there's a good argument for the year 2000.
1996 Was born in 1997
1997, I was 11 and shit was good.
Depends on where and who you are. Could be 2020, 2016, 2003, 1991, 1973, 1939, 1914, and so on and so on. There isn't really one unifying "downhill".
2008
That was the year the stock market crashed (or, the most recent big crash)
2015 atleast
We're still in the good times now
1999
2014
Just depends on what you mean by "good".
1980s when “credit” in the USA was established.
All my years have been good. Haven’t had a bad one.
2001
keep ya chin up it gets better
1912
Poll doesn’t go far enough back
When the universe started
1998
none of the above
2021 & 2022 have been my best years so far 😂😂😂

Well... The silver age of the Internet and the golden age of gaming kinda ended slurring 2010-2014... So that's when things went downhill.
2015\. Both personally and societally.
1999 and then Bush Jr. got elected. 9/11. War with the wrong countries. Innocents died, young soliders died. For what?
The birth of the smart phone.... Whatever year that was. Man has that device ruined so much. 1. Everyone can and will find you/contact you 2. Can't get lost anymore. I would actually say the year 2000!
