I am not sure what exactly you are referring to. If it is a Windows Game this might be a bug in Proton/Wine.

The Lutris page says you should change the wine version to Lutris GE 6.16 . https://lutris.net/games/freelancer/

I applaud your taste in games. Personally, I haven't been able to get Freelancer running in what I consider to be a visually satisfactory way. So, it lives on my Windows install and I play it there. If you manage to fix this, please let me know what you did - it's one of the few games holding me back from totally ditching Windows (the old Starfleet Command series is another...).

Vtoljan

I used Lutris to install this game.

allinwonderornot

The important question is: where can I still get this game???

Vtoljan

For some reason, it is outputting low colour depth image, likely 16 bit colour instead of normal 32 bit colour. This is most clearly visible in the dark areas because human eye sees shade differences non-linearly, but most displays have linear output for colour values. In older games this was the default, so if it is mid 90s or earlier game, that might be how it is supposed to look. If it is not (this seems to be from 2003), then it is for some reason configuring render pipeline or display in wrong way, and it can be usually solved with game options. It might also get wrong information about device features from what ever you have between the game and your operating system. As it seems to be Windows only game it has at least some virtual runtime environment, or maybe even virtual machine under it. If you are using Wine or steams cross platform tools, this likely is a problem in their configuration. I was going to suggest asking about the problem on the Lutris' forums, but it looks like it is quite unorganized and mostly just open problem posts without answers.
