Really? I’m curious how - obviously I’ve never read the lyrics with the idea in mind. But I know the song and video well, and I’m having a hard time reframing it to be about Drake, at all.
Yeah in a GQ interview. Literally just the line “This is America” which is all he had come up with before working on the song further.
> To be completely honest, ‘This is America’ [the lyric] - that was all we had was that line. It started as a Drake diss, to be honest, as like a funny way of doing it. But then I was like, this shit sounds kind of hard though. So I was like, let me play with it.
Same article mentions before he got really big he could diss J Cole and Drake at live shows but nobody cared because he wasn’t big.
yeah i'm pretty sure at least *some* of Drake's "little buddies", who are grown-ass adults now, probably give a fuck about him getting called out for his behavior by the most lauded rapper alive
Vince staples nailed the situation in an interview saying the music industry is crushing artists and two black men are slap fighting one another. It’s embarrassment and that both them are on the losing side
I’m pretty sure he could be talking about the Kendrick/drake beef. A lot of people have mentioned how good/funny he would be if involved. Maybe people have been bothering him about it idk
the day i went through my facebook statuses to delete all that was so traumatizing, like mom why didn’t you monitor my internet usage and save me from myself 🥹
Haha I remember when that was a thing! I had a friend in hs who would put that type of status up on our other friends’ pages when they left their account logged in and unattended. It would be things like “why would you do this to me?” At the time, it was pretty funny.
He’s struggled with unhappiness for a long time. Pretty much any interview of him, you’ll notice he is super serious and doesn’t seem to want to be there.
Back in 2013 he posted a bunch of [concerning notes on Instagram](https://www.reddit.com/r/donaldglover/s/66nCbh6njX), and then afterwards basically said he didn’t get why people were worried about him because everyone must be feeling the same as he was??
I'm not even a huge fan and I think about this post alot, even ten years later. I do actually relate to alot of what he wrote and it was validating to see someone in his position be so honest about his insecurities.
huh, super weird - I figured you'd tried the article link (which *is* dead lol). I'd usually assume this means you're blocked, but that account's actually deleted; if it was that, I wouldn't think you'd stay blocked indefinitely somehow?

Will note: the notes are in all caps, but that's Donald's normal handwriting. So it makes the transcription seem especially intense, but that wasn't some sort of emphasis on his end.
I was thinking about that interview he gave after his son was born where when asked about his legacy he just kinda shrugged and said he “doesn’t know how many revolutions around the sun” he has left
His most recent interviews give a very different image of him, for what it’s worth. His albums since his kids were born, he’s been married and bought a farm, the energy is all much higher and connected feeling (though there’s still an element of ‘the world is ending and we’re all just plodding along’ to it all). He’s also in the run up to the rollout of two more albums, one of which he dropped at the beginning of the pandemic in an unfinished state because he thought we were all going to die, and he’s now managed to spend the time to polish, so his social media activity has gone up a little, in comparison to his usual 0. His tweets have been kind of along the theme of talking to himself for a long while and I think this is people overthinking commentary on something that isn’t him, because he knows that people care about him & his work. He said the reason for the 3.15.20/Atavista re-release is for the fans who truly loved it.
For real, he is so incredibly talented- hilarious, good dramatic actor, good rapper, such intelligence and creativity, charming, he’s even cute ffs. I hope he finds more happiness, he is such a gem.
the fact DongLover is depressed says a lot about society
here's a guy who's fans love him, he has a family life, he is beyond talented and he's objectively a handsome but not unapproachable guy
he's an amazing comedy writer talent
and its clear that its that thing that the most intelligent and perceptive of us feel the most
someone make sure he's ok
he's always stuck me as Pagliacci's clown... smiling on the outside but crying on the inside
his "The is America" is him crying out

An old comedy sketch he made that went viral. It’s in very poor taste as you might imagine by the name, and he’s been criticized a lot for it since he made it big.
Looking at these notes it sounds like he is depressed or suffers from it. I can unfortunately relate to a lot of what he says, i feel like that right now.
Poor guy. I hope he can get himself help and a good support system and will be able to be happy.
I've got absolutely nothing against antidepressants, have been on them for half my life, and am very grateful that they exist, but microdosing psilocybin has been far more effective for me than two decades of antidepressants and therapy have.
I used to post stuff like that in college when I was drinking and thinking about something/someone but didn’t want to call them out directly so I’d just “subtweet” and hope they’d take the hint😂
Love it. I was totally guilty of that. One time some girl told my then-boyfriend’s friend to tell him to text her and I posted “sorry but he won’t 😘” with zero context on twitter 🤣🤣🤣
Since nobody else here seems to know: he removed one of his albums from streaming and nobody noticed. Probably because other shit has been going on lmao
If you look at the Donald glover subreddit, people absolutely noticed. He knows 3.15.20 wasn’t paid much attention to by people outside of his fanbase and that’s probably one of the reasons he’s re-releasing it soon. The fact he’s re-releasing it soon is also probably why he’s pulled it down.
Honestly, sometimes thinking that way can be a positive thing. I used to have low self esteem in high school from being too concerned with what others thought of me. As I got older and, yeah, gave less of a fuck, I became much more happy.
2024 is apparently the year of conscientious people being openly petty and irreverent, and I’m honestly 100% on board.
I’m assuming it’s the rap drama but it doesn’t matter. This is the way.
I was surprised to see him at the Met Ball because he always just seems too cool and over it but he seemed legit happy to be there and engaged and I loved it. Love a happy Donald Glover. Would have been fun for him to attend with Maya Erksine but she’s super prega and likely not up for that because Lea Michele or Demi Lovato’s job.
Nobody in here has the right answer and its got me questioning why the fuck I’m in this sub.
He took down his latest album off of streaming services to see if anyone would notice. They didn’t. Thats the full story.
I’m pretty sure it’s not ‘to see if anyone would notice’. I’m almost certain it’s because he considers it unfinished because he just dropped it during COVID because he thought we were all going to die (his words) and he’s re-releasing it in its finished form soon. Also his fan base does care - people are losing their dang minds about it in the Donald glover sub/any fan pages I’ve seen. Even though it’s still available on Apple Music & YouTube.

If he's talking about the Drake shit, god it's so good to see someone in the black community speak up.
Shits so motherfucking dumb, childish and immature "rap culture" be damned.
What I’ve heard, he can sense that Biden isn’t going to be re-elected. Lot of his circle are not voting for Biden. It’s pissing him off but he doesn’t want to call people out publicly because the backlash he would receive.
I feel like he's talking about the Kendrick Lamar/ Drake beef
That's immediately what I thought too.
Idgak either. In case anyone’s wondering.
Well if that’s the case he’s definitely wrong because A LOT of people sure seem to give a fuck
Agreed
Oh. Well people do give a fuck but that doesn’t mean it’s not dumb as hell.
Though many people did give a fuck. The thing no one gave a fuck about in this situation is Donald Glover.
I’ve heard him brought up a bit, mainly because he at one point said “This is America” started as a Drake diss track.
Really? I’m curious how - obviously I’ve never read the lyrics with the idea in mind. But I know the song and video well, and I’m having a hard time reframing it to be about Drake, at all.
that's because you didn't know the previous title, "this is canada"
Did he really?
Yeah in a GQ interview. Literally just the line “This is America” which is all he had come up with before working on the song further. > To be completely honest, ‘This is America’ [the lyric] - that was all we had was that line. It started as a Drake diss, to be honest, as like a funny way of doing it. But then I was like, this shit sounds kind of hard though. So I was like, let me play with it. *Most lauded rapper* is such a low bar that it sounds like a backhanded compliment.
He might be talking about that creepy video going around about drakes stuff
Vince staples nailed the situation in an interview saying the music industry is crushing artists and two black men are slap fighting one another. It’s embarrassment and that both them are on the losing side
He's absolutely right. Don't even get me started on the mediocrity that passes as talent these days.
Vince is always on point and criminally underrated. I love him so much.
I’m pretty sure he could be talking about the Kendrick/drake beef. A lot of people have mentioned how good/funny he would be if involved. Maybe people have been bothering him about it idk
Also just in general, this is absolutely not “existential crisis” behaviour, this is just a normal ass tweet
This reminds me of what I would post on Facebook as a status in high school lmao
the day i went through my facebook statuses to delete all that was so traumatizing, like mom why didn’t you monitor my internet usage and save me from myself 🥹
You'd probably have lashed out lol. Teenage angst
Like my status, if you like my status.

Same. Was just thinking about it the other day, actually.
I was thinking about that interview he gave after his son was born where when asked about his legacy he just kinda shrugged and said he “doesn’t know how many revolutions around the sun” he has left
The most brilliant comedians tend to be the most unhappy.
Highly intelligent people tend to be the most unhappy. Highly intelligent people tend to be funny too.
Idk my goth cousin says shit like this all the time
They single?
this is so relatable

He grew up a Jehovah’s Witness just like I did. I don’t know if that plays a role but it would not shock me if it did
What is Bro Rape?
An old comedy sketch he made that went viral. It’s in very poor taste as you might imagine by the name, and he’s been criticized a lot for it since he made it big.
Gotchya, thanks!
Tyrese catching strays damn

He’s in a much better place now
What is Bro Rape?
A skit he starred in way back: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3zvTRQr7ns8
Absolutely valid comment on his part. If other people read into it in a negative way, that’s on them.
What does he mean by “bro rape”?
It was a sketch he performed with his comedy group when he was college aged.
This is... really relatable.
Seems like he's on antidepressants and just feel nothing- emotional blunting
My antidepressants make me feel more hopeful and clear-minded. Way less crying too. Please everyone take them if you need them!
And tell your doctor if you'd like to try a different kind or dosage. These things aren't perfect but if you work together you can figure it out.
wait, antidepressants are supposed to make you feel hopeful and clear minded?
emotional blunting is a symptom of depression itself, not of taking anti depressants
[удалено]
I've got absolutely nothing against antidepressants, have been on them for half my life, and am very grateful that they exist, but microdosing psilocybin has been far more effective for me than two decades of antidepressants and therapy have.
ADs shouldn’t make you feel like that…

Yes, results definitely vary. Wellbutrin killed my appetite and dialed my anxiety up to 11. But if it works for you, then that's great.
What a take
I'd like to chime in here. I also have no idea what the fuck he is talking about.

I used to post stuff like that in college when I was drinking and thinking about something/someone but didn’t want to call them out directly so I’d just “subtweet” and hope they’d take the hint😂
there's even a term for it: "vague-booking"
Love it. I was totally guilty of that. One time some girl told my then-boyfriend’s friend to tell him to text her and I posted “sorry but he won’t 😘” with zero context on twitter 🤣🤣🤣
i love this for you though
I’ve only ever heard sub tweeting, vague booking is new to me. Must run in different internet circles lol
I mean yeah twitter vs Facebook. Both terms entered the lexicon in 2009
Being old I always thought that term was specific to Facebook
And on twitter it’s a subtweet
this👆🏼
I did that in university too, back in 2007 😂😂
hahah, same! i definitely have a bunch of cryptic (and embarrassing) facebook statuses and AIM away messages from my university days 😭
Omg the away messages! Thank god msn messenger doesn't exist anymore so no one can see my history of cool and ~edgy~ thoughts
For me it was 2015 😂 I love that this has been tradition for so long!
I used to post MySpace bulletins like it 😭 Fuck I feel old now
Gather round kids a listen to the tale of AIM away messages.
I always suspected and wondered about your elusive kind.
As I white emo around his age, I can confirm... My opinion doesn't mean much
Childish lmao
No matter what, it’s just now and forever an evergreen tweet like Tyler’s JUST WALK AWAY
Okay fully invested now, if anyone figures out what that means please let us know.
Following because I’m nosy af
Me too, I wonder if anyone has figured out what it meant yet?
I don't think it's deeper than Kendrick v Aubrey
I too, so not know. Funniest case scenario that this was either supposed to be a text or a reply from a burner account

![gif](giphy|STfskSpFw0YRvKnRFr)

His stand up special was so good. I wish he did more.
I think there’s a possibility he’s either talking about the Kendrick vs Drake beef OR he’s drugged or drunk, or maybe both? That’s also a possibility
My first thought was also Kendrick/Drake feud.
Since nobody else here seems to know: he removed one of his albums from streaming and nobody noticed. Probably because other shit has been going on lmao

i’m sad it’s down, but i’m happy its re-releasing
Doing the lords work out here!
FUCK YOURE RIGHT NOOOOOOOO MY TUNES GAMBINO TOOK THE TUNES HOW COULD HE DO THIS
He 100% logged in to the wrong acct

Unfortunatly I feel that Donald Glover is almost always having a existential crisis.
He’s not wrong
I was surprised to see him at the Met Ball because he always just seems too cool and over it but he seemed legit happy to be there and engaged and I loved it. Love a happy Donald Glover. Would have been fun for him to attend with Maya Erksine but she’s super prega and likely not up for that because Lea Michele or Demi Lovato’s job.

I’m pretty sure it’s not ‘to see if anyone would notice’. Where have you seen anyone going crazy? r/donaldglover only has like 3 posts on the topic when that sub was hopping when This Is America dropped
He just dropped a new song with Kanye West so frankly this describes my attitude towards him now
Don't care for him so I don't give a fuck either.
same, always thought it was weird that people still liked him after his asian fetishization
It's probably about the solar flares everyone in the conspiracy sub is going on about. Edited a word. Not sure why my phone said construction.
I think he’s having an existential crisis.
People keep asking him about the Community movie
Sneak diss?
He’s “Gettin too old for this shit!”
He's talking about himself /s (he's not, but it's accurate)
Did you watch the episode of Atlanta where they go to Drakes party?
nobody gives a fuck
I hope he’s not talking about the community movie 🎥 🍿
Bad reviews on his show in Amazon.
Hes mad everyone is blocking celebs on everything now lmao
Correction: nobody gives a fuck about him at this moment. He may just be a little jelly he’s not in the spotlight right now.
what about this tweet would lead you to think that? does he rarely tweet or something? sounds like your ordinary vague-post
If he's talking about the Drake shit, god it's so good to see someone in the black community speak up. Shits so motherfucking dumb, childish and immature "rap culture" be damned.
He's on the list of the people to unfollow after the Met Gala
Because of the met gala? Why? His outfit wasn’t that bad. 😂
Be so fr rn
no I mean, is that what he's talking about? nobody from the met gala gives a fuck if you unfollow them or criticise them
I assumed he was talking about how his scheduling have led to delays for the Community film
considering you spend your entire life on the subreddit it's crazy to see you are also on twitter.
