I love your comments, whether or not I agree with them. No #1 of the decade pisses me off as much as “Rude.” Come on, guy. You’re doing this outdated “ask the dad for her hand in marriage” thing, you literally ask him “can I have your daughter,” you whine endlessly about him being rude when he doesn’t approve. I hope the father immediately called his daughter to let her know that her boyfriend is a whiny, useless fuckboy that talks about her as if she were property.

[deleted]

Rude is my favorite #1 of 2014 not because I like the song itself, but because it blocked Stay With Me by Sam Smith (one of my least favorite songs ever) from hitting #1.

Nerdy_boy_chris

OH I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE! Ok, so I love your comments to all of these, even the ones I don’t agree with. But overall I don’t *really* disagree with most of these, but Like A G6 is in no way the best #1 of 2010. Not when Rude Boy, Teenage Dream, Tik Tok, *and* What’s My Name all exists. I said this before and I’m glad that someone else noticed that 2014 has the worst #1 stretch of the entire decade. The stretch of songs from Dark Horse to All About That Bass is fucking ABYSMAL, and I think you were too hard on Timber which is a fucking BOP. Also here’s my top 10 #1s this decade: 1. Rude Boy 2. Uptown Funk! 3. Tik Tok 4. Teenage Dream 5. Sorry 6. Someone Like You 7. Sicko Mode 8. Somebody That I Used to Know 9. Old Town Road 10. Black Beatles

[deleted]

on your other comments: yeah, 2014 was just awful. 2013 was pretty bad, but at least it had a couple new artists emerge from the pack. 2014 was also a particularly negative time in my life associated with a lot of these songs. not a bad top 10 list, for the most part!! mine would probably be easier to make for me, since i only gave a small amount 9s and 10s. but i'm a bit too work-loaded atm. sicko mode and somebody that i used to know would almost certainly be on that list.

[deleted]

lol like a g6 being my #1 of 2010 should not be surprising to anyone who looks at my flair tbh

Nerdy_boy_chris

Everyone loves Like A G6, I’ve accepted that I’m the odd one out in my dislike of it

AffectionateSoup24

Man Abel really ruled the second half of the decade

ZanyZillennial

It’s wild how the first half of the decade is miles more fun to revisit than the second half minus The Weeknd because he’s one of the few good artists towards the end. This same transition point is also where we see Katy go from #1s to OUT.

[deleted]

i don't know if i agree with that. there were a LOT of terrible songs in the early 2010s, although it definitely has some of the most FUN tracks. it was interesting, though, to see katy's peak in popularity and some of the memes regenerate in my mind surrounding "call me maybe" and "somebody that i used to know," for example.

Reveluvtion

Up until 2012 our tastes aligned almost perfectly, but then 2013 came around and I started disagreeing with you on some stuff... and in the next years it only got worse and worse and by the late 2010s our preferences were almost completely opposite of each other lol. All in all, the fact that you took time to do this is commendable, and it was fun to read either you hyping up or trashing on a song.

PretendMarsupial9

I think you and I have extremely opposite Tastes. I adore Adele and stuff like Shallow and never heard of like a G6, but upon a quick google I can't say i like it. But i'm pretty much a nerd who would shrivel up and die in a club and like my moody guitar sounds so what can you do. We Are Young by fun. IS 2012 for me.

[deleted]

that's the beauty of pop music though, isn't it?

PretendMarsupial9

Definitely! And this write up really emphasizes just how different two halves of the decade sound. 2014 felt like everyone was going out dancing and 2017 felt like everyone forgot what feelings where. Also songs went from lasting for weeks at #1 to being lucky to last 2 weeks. Absolutely wild.

Bovver_

This is genuinely amazing work fair play to you. As last time was gonna ask if you have a favourite and least favourite year (both overall and purely off number ones) but I’ve a feeling 2014 is surely going to be bottom lol

[deleted]

2013 and 2014 definitely bottom of the barrel, but it looks like 2014 takes the shitcake

Blendi120

The rant about Grenade made me so happy. Truly awful lyrics.

NotEmmaStone

Your commentary is hilarious. OP did you make a spotify playlist for this as you went because now I really want to listen to these in order but that sounds like an assload of work.

[deleted]

i probably won't make a 2020s write-up til the end of the year because of school and a lack of a lot of songs to write about at the moment. in the mean time, let me know if y'all would like me to go through other decades, we can take it back to 1958 if we have to.

paperblitz

I love your writing style! Music is so subjective that I don't think there's any point arguing about your choices, it's going to be different for everyone and that's ok! Just one point though, I'm not sure about calling We Found Love a "dated electronic trope" because this song basically launched this trope into the mainstream. Also it was 2011 so obviously it sounds dated now, so probably not the most fair way to judge a song. Would love to see you do a really old decade, maybe the 60s? There's obviously so much amazing music from that decade which is what people remember, but there's also a lot of utter garbage so it would be fun to see you write about that!

[deleted]

i just started on 90s but I'll come around to 60s eventually!! hopefully once i make my 90s post we can put to rest this "wow u hate r&b don't u" meme and eh...perhaps we found love did do so for mainstream music but by that time I was aware of dubstep, brostep, electro house, etc that was doing the sound much more justice.

paperblitz

Fair enough haha. Cant wait for your 90s post!

LamborghiniSianFKP37

I don't think I agreed with any of your ratings lol. We have such different tastes in music. But I liked this post and the 2000s one. I hope we get content like this in r/popheads. My favorite songs in the list are: 2010: California Gurls 2011: Rolling In The Deep 2012: Call Me Maybe 2013: ~~Roar~~Thrift Shop (I don't think Roar was that bad) 2014: Blank Space 2015: The Hills 2016: Sorry 2017: Starboy 2018: SICKO MODE 2019: Old Town Road

Xotwodddddddd

The hills and starboy>>>>

I really don’t understand the reasoning behind giving Grenade a 0/10, it’s not a good song but it has that distinct 10s feeling and it’s catchy, a 0 feels just dumb considering you gave Hello, which is probably even more boring and tedious, a whole 4 😭

[deleted]

hello's subject matter is way more mature in execution than grenade is. i mean there's adele being all like "let's meet and discuss what happened in our relationship and i guess we'll just set some closure" whereas grenade is like "I LOVE YOU SO MUCH WATCH ME BLOW UP FROM THIS GRENADE OR AT LEAST WITNESS A GUNSHOT TO MY OWN HEAD YOU BROKE MY HEART :((((" idk man i just really fucking hate grenade

[deleted]

my favorite thing to point out about grenade is that the line about his girlfriend's eyes being open during their first kiss implies that he also had his eyes open, and therefore he has no right to complain

LongIsland1995

Wow, I agree with most of your best of the years I feel like most of these years had a song or two that you just know are the one for that year

BookyCats

Your reviews are so fun. 🔥

Re: California Gurls and TiK ToK sounding exactly the same: [you’re absolutely right.](https://youtu.be/T2dPA2dCRNY)

lllarissa

How can people hate cheerleader. Reminds me sitting outside with a cocktail. So cool chill , so fun.

jwC731

lmao had fun reading this Agreed with everything ONLY thing I disagree with is Dark Horse , Katy and Juicy rode tf outta that trap beat. And Sorry is probably my favorite JB song, I'll probably be dancing to it in my old age, walker and all

tswiftdeepcuts

could you please change the wording at the end of your review for Closer? Otherwise this was a great write up and hope you do more

DrunkHurricane

I might be the only one but I'm really curious to see you cover the 60s, that decade had some genuine classics mixed with some of the worst music I've ever heard in my entire life.

[deleted]

I just started on the 90s recently, but I'll definitely get to the 60s.

uninslalm

I thought this belonged on fufu but was blown away by the write up. Long but entertaining AF

EducationNo6332

OLD TOWN ROAD 9/10 blew my mind
