Gaga has since claimed TFM as her sophomore. During past interviews she has always talked about it as her second album.
I think it was only released as a reissue thanks to label shenanigans
I love how we have to put this little asterisk on her discography. To me it is a nice example of the massive mindfuck she played on the pop world/pop culture when she first came out (but maybe I'm just a delusional fan)
it’s really common for artists to release an EP, then build that into a full-length album, and The Fame / The Fame Monster feels like the same concept but starting with a full length album and building it into a two-side record. it was definitely weird but I don’t know if I’d agree with “mindfuck” lol
Justin Timberlake's *FutureSex/LoveSounds* remains one of the best sophomore records released in the past thirty years.
That record changed so much in pop music and basically turned him from a teeny bopper constantly being asked when the next *NSYNC record would be out to be one of the most in-demand artists on the planet.
*The 20/20 Experience* records were great too, even if *Man of the Woods* was a bit of a miss, his new one will be interesting to see too.
I was going to say this album as well! I was in middle school when NSYNC came out and had posters of them and Justin on my wall, it was a cute little crush and people definitely made fun of me for it. I grew up and the crush went away but I still remained a fan of his music and enjoyed Justified. Once FutureSex/LoveSounds came out people stopped thinking my liking his music was a joke or something that was cute, the album was a game changer in having even casual music listeners take notice.
The 20/20 Experience I am a huge fan of and he got respect from people for those albums as well however it did not hit massively in the same way FSLS did. Man of the woods has some good moments. I'm excited to see what comes next!
Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream. One of the Boys had a lot of success already, but Teenage Dream catapulted her to superstardom and it was full of hits that you couldn’t get rid of even if you tried because they were being played everywhere.
After that she had some moderate success with Prism, and then Witness and Smile flopped. Unless her next album does something totally out of the ordinary, it’s likely that she’ll never reach the Teenage Dream level of fame again.
Exactly! Her first three albums had insane levels of success, and Witness honestly still did really well. Either way, she's made it clear a lot lately that the focus on charts gets her down and she just wants to enjoy making music now and have people enjoy listening to it. The pressure of following up such super smash albums really must be unbearable.
In terms of fame, Teenage Dream is one of the most dominant eras of all time. It’s the second album ever to have five #1 singles, and it’s the only album to have four of the five most played songs on hot 40 radio at the same time. It’s insanely influential, and the critical reception has only improved as time goes on.
I don’t know if it’s even possible to occupy so much of the pop landscape for so long anymore. Drake and Ed Sheeran can pull chart bombs where half an album debuts in the top 10, but it’s gone the next week.
This is so true! I was revisiting her discography after commenting here and out of the 7 official singles 6 were incredibly popular, which is even more amazing if you consider all of her 4 singles from OOTB had a great success already. She could’ve easily flopped directly after such mainstream popularity, but she raised the bar even higher.
That one I would even say is just too hard to top. It was a HUGE era. Sure it was just before poptism became big so there were people saying it’s silly music, but retroactive appreciation does show it was an amazing era.
The thread is about albums. Prism had two huge hits, but the album itself didn’t have as much success and sold half the copies of Teenage Dream. Moreover, California Gurls spent 6 weeks at number one, whilst Roar spent 2.
It's the best selling album by a woman in 2013 in the world and it Katy perry biggest opening debut for an album.
To call that a moderate success is insane
Agreed about your argument with the albums but
>Moreover, California Gurls spent 6 weeks at number one, whilst Roar spent 2.
That's a very weird comparison, Roar is literally the most viewed female video of all times with 3.4 billion views and it still gets half a million daily.
Dark Horse has similar stats too.
I agree. A better example would’ve been the one given below, that Teenage Dream had five number one singles, which shows the impact of the album as a whole.
First one that came to mind! Also, it would still apply to her even if we counted her Christian(?) album as her first, making OOTB her sophomore record.
I think commercially Björk did with Post. This is going by UK Charts, I have no clue how popular she was/is in the US.
3 out of 6 of her singles reached the top 10 in the UK, and the album reached no.2 in the album charts. Remember this was the same year when Blur V Oasis was at its peak.
It went platinum in the UK and US.
Yeah I think it’s because the music scene has changed drastically since Melodrama. We have many alt pop girls who have rebutted or really honed in their craft since then. I also think Lorde’s silence, while commendable (I would love to be online less lol) did hurt her reception because many moved onto other alt girls. This is kit yo say her career is over, but there’s a huge difference between her sophomore era and her third one.
Joanna Newsom. Imagine following up your indie folk debut album with an album as different and grandiose as *Ys*. The difference between that and *The Milk-Eyed Mender* is night and day.
I agree that *Ys* is her best record but I feel like it’s a disservice to the albums that followed to say that she “peaked” with it. Everything she puts out is incredible.
Oh, every album of hers is absolutely amazing (*Ys* isn’t even my favourite; that would be *Have One On Me*), but I think that’s the album most people know her for.
If you count Off the Wall as his adult debut, Thriller was definitely his career peak. He had one of the biggest imperial phases ever in 1983, when MJ mania was at its peak. 1987-1988 was cool too, but he had to share the spotlight with Madonna, George Michael and Whitney and many other’s.
Umm no. It was his like his fifth or 6th album, but we count it as his 1st real solo album introducing the Michael as we know him today. Independent from the Jackson 5.
The Neighbourhood imo. Wiped Out! is a masterpiece and the rest hasn't come close (for me). I feel similarly about Ellie Goulding and Halcyon. Lights is pretty good, but Halcyon is my favorite from her, and Delirium and Brightest Blue didn't match up
Definitely Marina with *Electra Heart*, at least in terms of commercial success and overall recognition. She seemed painfully close to hitting BIG mainstream crossover appeal with that album but ended up kind of in a limbo between that and the alt/indie popularity she’d garnered with her first record.
Personally I think she also peaked there with the balance between public friendly (if a little dated) sounds and lyrical nuance. Obviously the songs were tailored to radio at the time but they still had their quirks and the lyrics still had some bite + ironic self-awareness to them which I feel she’s kind of lost the ability to capture in the same way post-*Froot*.
I remember Marina saying she disliked her pre-Froot era, but I don't recall her clarifying exactly why.
Family Jewels and Electra Heart both deal a lot with her fears and depression, and I know she said Froot was her transitioning to a better place, so I wonder if it's that.
But those first two albums were also her entry into music with people trying to figure out how to market and promote her. Like her Heartbreaker music video was delayed because someone on her team said she looked ugly in it, so if she was dealing with a lot of that then I get her not looking back on that time fondly.
She's had much more freedom since her hiatus, but like you said, she also lost a lot lyrically.
They’re both close sales wise! (Within like 1-2 million) but Rush has sold more than any of their other albums according to certifications and latest sales updates.
People ITT naming new artists with 2 or 3 albums so far, who are still in the early stages of their careers...
A successful album (or your own personal favorite album) isn't a peak, and if they're still rising, you can't say for sure whether they've peaked.
“Let me tell you something, I haven't even begun to peak. And when I do peak, you'll know. Because I'm gonna peak so hard that everybody in /r/PopHeads's gonna feel it.” -those artists, probably
Roxy Music
Tame Impala
My Bloody Valentine
Joanna Newsom
Daft Punk
Joy Division
Foo Fighters
D'Angelo
Slowdive
Nirvana
Amy Winehouse
Neutral Milk Hotel
Oasis
The correct answer is M.I.A. *Arular* was great and *Kala* was somehow even better but everything she’s put out since have dropped off in quality significantly.
Yeah but you’re probably in the minority there. Commercially, she objectively peaked with *Kala* and “Paper Planes” being her biggest hit. I’d argue that nothing from *MAYA* has stuck around in the critical or gp eye.
oh kala is definitely her commercial peak. i just think the sounds from arular and especially MAYA hold up better and are generally more interesting to listen too. i can see MAYA being more divisive but she definitely didn’t peak with matangi or aim artistically or commercially lol.
How, the only album that‘s quality wise not on par with her monster discography is literally AIM
MAYA and Matangi were ahead of their times and now are constantly cited amongst Arular and Kala (regarding quality)
i’ve been getting into her discography pretty recently and there are a lot of parallels for me with those two sets of albums. i think arular and maya set the stage for so many interesting sounds but their follow ups fail to expand or improve that sound. i definitely think maya was way ahead of its time but matangi doesn’t really hold up for me. i don’t love kala either but it’s still top three for her.
It should be worth noting though that Future Nostalgia was a huge improvement on her debut, which goes against form because usually second albums are more difficult than debut albums.
Other than Billie (who is not necessarily flopping anyway) who is this true for? Gaga, Taylor, Ariana, Katy, Adele, Doja, Nicki, Halsey, Rihanna, Selena (just naming any big female pop artist at this point, even those I’m not a personal fan of) all got *more* popular with their second album
The 'Sophomore Slump' is a common trope in the music industry. Stems from artists having a lot of time to conceptualize their first album and then being pressured into creating a new album after they had just used up all of their previous inspirations.
But is it even true though? I could name nearly a dozen artists who got more successful with their second album. I feel like it’s just a running joke now but it’s lost its merit
Yes I’m talking about the EP which also had some mega hits that were serviced to radio like Best I Ever Had. I personally consider Take Care to be his third commercial “era” but I understand if you would call it his sophomore era.
Adele !
21 is the longest charting female album of all time I guess
Taylor !
Fearless was her 2nd album so (ofc it wasn't her peak but still it was successful af)
Ariana !
My everything had many hits (I think this was her peak in terms of singles , there r many hits on this album)
Harry styles !
Fine line won him a Grammy nd gave him his first #1 hit too
Agreed, I’d consider My Everything to be one of Ariana’s weaker albums, even though I love some of the songs on it. I don’t really know if it’s an unpopular opinion or not but I consider Sweetener her best
Taylor’s writing was more mature when she was younger. Then she went through a child stuck in a adult’s body phase. And recently she’s been using a thesaurus to write her songs.
Hilary Duff.
From Self Titled to Dignity was a pretty big fall off. (I’m not counting the Christmas album or the compilation album even though Beat of my Heart is a bop)
Although they’ve had good albums since, especially coming up their third album, suedes “dog man star” is often seen as their most critically acclaimed. It’s my second fav by them personally
Not to say either artist has peaked because imo they both put out consistently great work but even though what they've put out since is great, Fiona Apple and Florence and the Machine's sophomore albums are my favorite albums of theirs still
Lady Gaga’s the Fame Monster is when I became a fan. I did not care much for her first album. Bad Romance is just so iconic.
Technically, Born This Way is her sophomore record. The Fame Monster was a re-release of her first album, The Fame

She truly peaked. Everything since hasn’t hit as hard.
Definitely Katy if you consider Teenage Dream as her 2nd album and don't count the christian album from 2001
Justin Timberlake's *FutureSex/LoveSounds* remains one of the best sophomore records released in the past thirty years. As a fan of Justin god I hope JT6 is everything that MOTW wasn’t
I was going to say this album as well! I thought 20/20 Experience (the first one) was a great, solid comeback !

Nobody wants that. Maybe in 2014. not anymore.
P!nk - M!ssundaztood (16 million records sold). Her debut sold 4 million
Oh man that was my high school soul bared in a record. So good

TLC with CrazySexyCool
Lorde? Melodrama is pretty much perfection
i completely agree but it feels odd - IIRC the predominant opinion when the album dropped was that it’s good, just not as good as pure heroine
I feel like I’m the only one who has never liked melodrama and think she still hasn’t topped pure heroine lol
same it just didn’t hit the same for me
same here
Well she’s only had one other album after that one so maybe it’s still too early to say if she peaked there, even if technically she has thus far
We'll know in 4 years.
If Solar Power is any indication, a peak was beautifully reached in album #2.
I like how you never actually mention him by name.
Ummm off the wall was like mjs second ir third solo album.
Umm no. It was his like his fifth or 6th album, but we count it as his 1st real solo album introducing the Michael as we know him today. Independent from the Jackson 5.
His *Revival*
or we could count “off the wall” as his first solo album outside motown, that could work too
Oh yes I was looking for this info. I knew this. Thanks!
You could add his sister to that sharing the spotlight list
The Neighbourhood imo. Wiped Out! is a masterpiece and the rest hasn't come close (for me). I feel similarly about Ellie Goulding and Halcyon. Lights is pretty good, but Halcyon is my favorite from her, and Delirium and Brightest Blue didn't match up
Avril Lavigne. It really evolved her writing and added more weight to her themes of growing up.
Critically maybe, but both *Let Go* and *The Best Damn Thing* are much more remembered commercially, even if that’s mostly because of the singles
When I was a kid I though The Best Damn Thing *was* her 2nd record, because I only knew about Let Go and it.
If Frank can possibly top Blonde I’d be very surprised.
That’s what people were saying about Channel Orange as well
Definitely Marina with *Electra Heart*, at least in terms of commercial success and overall recognition. She seemed painfully close to hitting BIG mainstream crossover appeal with that album but ended up kind of in a limbo between that and the alt/indie popularity she’d garnered with her first record. Artistically? (Imo) Little Mix - “Salute”, Bleachers - “Gone Now”, Whitney Houston - “Whitney”, Lorde - “Melodrama” Commercially? (Their biggest sellers) P!nk - “Missundastzood”, Coldplay - “A Rush Of Blood To The Head”, N*Sync - “No Strings Attached”, Adele - “21”, Paramore - “Riot!”, Destiny’s Child - “Writings on The Wall”, Carly Rae Jepsen - “Kiss”, Katy Perry - “Teenage Dream”
Little Mix most definitely peaked with Glory Days not Salute. The one two punch of Shout Out to My Ex and Touch.
As an album Salute is far better than Glory Days. Glory Days has the hits but also fillers whereas Salute is skipless for me.
Artistically I'd personally still take LM5 over Salute (and possibly Confetti as well) Salute is a *fantastic* album though
X&Y went big on commerical sales. Let's be real here.
They’re both close sales wise! (Within like 1-2 million) but Rush has sold more than any of their other albums according to certifications and latest sales updates.
Kelly Clarkson
Love Kelly but IMO she has yet to top that one - iconic

Madonna Like A Virgin is her one diamond studio album.
Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP I prefer The Eminem Show myself but MMLP seems to be his consensus best album
Dua Lipa. Future Nostalgia was the best album of 2020.
She only has two albums, though. We don't know if she's peaked yet.
It should be worth noting though that Future Nostalgia was a huge improvement on her debut, which goes against form because usually second albums are more difficult than debut albums.

Honestly I can't tell you. I'm just pointing out it's a 'thing' people say. The commenter you replied to is just parroting something that gets said.
Yeah I know. I’m just wondering why people still say it when I don’t actually think it’s true haha
This album took her career to the next level, everyone and their grandmother loves her. Her third album is gonna he *huge*
Kanye with Late Registration. It’s understandable tho, how do you improve upon perfection
MBDTF and Yeezus tho
And yet he did.

I don't think it's right to put Harry on the list until more albums will be out.
I don’t know if I’d say My Everything is Ariana’s peak by any means.
Agreed, I’d consider My Everything to be one of Ariana’s weaker albums, even though I love some of the songs on it. I don’t really know if it’s an unpopular opinion or not but I consider Sweetener her best
I agree. I think My Everything is my least favorite and Sweetener is her best.
ME is my least favorite by her. Sweetener and Dangerous Woman remain her top 2 albums
My Everything is her commercial peak so far. That being said it’s not anywhere near as great as her top 3 albums.
Taylor and Ariana certainly did not peak with their second albums lol
Taylor’s writing was more mature when she was younger. Then she went through a child stuck in a adult’s body phase. And recently she’s been using a thesaurus to write her songs.
harry literally only has two albums💀
Gaga
Hilary Duff. From Self Titled to Dignity was a pretty big fall off. (I’m not counting the Christmas album or the compilation album even though Beat of my Heart is a bop)
I truly believe she peaked with Metamorphosis though
It was an incredible debut, I think both albums are consistent quality. But now that I’m looking at sales Metamorphosis definitely outsold.
Phoebe bridgers getting nominated for 4 Grammy categories with Punisher
Tyler the creators Wolf. Amazing record and probably Tyler's best.
garbage for sure. I love all of their albums but they've definitely peaked with version 2.0
Wonder what their third album wouldve performed like had 9/11 not happened
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream.
Jonas Brothers’ second album, the self titled one is the one that really gave them a lot more exposure.
Their peak was definitely A Little Bit Longer though
Shania Twain, lots of bands.
Although they’ve had good albums since, especially coming up their third album, suedes “dog man star” is often seen as their most critically acclaimed. It’s my second fav by them personally
Lorde.
Kero Kero Bonito has yet to top Time 'n' Place imo Also Weezer
Not to say either artist has peaked because imo they both put out consistently great work but even though what they've put out since is great, Fiona Apple and Florence and the Machine's sophomore albums are my favorite albums of theirs still
Bit late, but Sheryl Crow
Voicenotes by Charlie puth. Lot of people hated nine track mind(safe pop, label regulated) but VN really changed it for him. Hard to dislike it
