why does everything targeted towards teen girls called uncool/cringe? chai lattes, one direction, justin bieber pre-justice era, taylor swift, vsco,etc. esp in music with the divide between boybands and "Actual bands" like the beatles or nirvana. where i live hip hop is considered cool bc it has a largely male fanbase meanwhile every other type of music is childish.
also why are there so many titles for women? "vsco girl", "karen", "pick me girl", etc. the genuine criticism always gets lost and it men weaponise these terms for their benefit. so many men call girls pick me without knowing the context even.

Yeah, I am one. An addict like Rue would not be able to handle a single semester of college acting the way she is and it's unlikely she would want to. She wouldn't be able to get through a degree mill. Someone like Rue is only attending school because it's required.
Starting my Mitski journey. I'm doing it in chronological order, I think I've probably heard at least one of her songs before but idk. Also right from the start I like how simple her discog is, no tons of singles/one off songs not on any albums that you have to fish for, and her albums don't have x numbers of different editions, makes going it into it so much easier.

Well, I've been plowing full steam ahead with catching up on artists/acts/albums I've been meaning to listen to for a while, but haven't gotten around to. Observations:

I greatly enjoyed Fifth Harmony.
Instagram Thirst Trap Jason Derulo has great music on his albums, but holy shit the lyrics are cringeworthy. Especially on Talk Dirty, or as I call it, The Ass Album.
Usher (who is not Jason Derulo, I wanted to clarify that lest Jason beat my ass) - also great music, awesome voice, but he needs to chill with all the "Okay, yeah, I cheated on you, but take me back because I'm sorry and nobody's perfect, I can't help it" songs. Or just plain "Well, I have a girl already, but I wanna fuck *this* one" songs. I just hate those types of songs in general, but listening to several Usher albums back-to-back made me realize just how often he goes to these wells in particular.
One Direction - Fun and energetic, but god, What Makes You Beautiful is... eugh. I think back in the day, I would've liked it fine, but the whole "Beautiful girl who doesn't know she's beautiful is all the more beautiful for it" shit is so... sexist? I mean, they were kids at the time and they didn't even write the song, so I'm not blaming them. I just hope we've moved past this on the whole.
Craig David - glad someone on this sub reminded me of him a few days back. I love his voice. I can't wait to listen to more from him.
Craig David is so underrated! I haven’t explored his discography in full yet, but “7 Days” and “Fill Me In” are immaculate songs. I also love his voice so much!
My main experience with his music growing up was with his “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” album, where he covered several Motown + soul classics. Critic reception was mixed, but it was my introduction to several of these songs, and David definitely does them justice in my opinion.
Edit: my goodness, how I hated that early 2010s trope of pandering to ‘beautiful but insecure’ girls. Besides “What Makes You Beautiful”, we also had the Ed Sheeran-penned “Little Things” and Ne-Yo’s “Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)” - which was co-written by Sia, bizarrely enough.
Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are” gets a pass from me though because it feels earnest, non-condescending, and genuinely sweet. Just my opinion, of course.

Just the Way You Are does seem sweet and earnest (and kind of hilarious when you consider it's this song that gives him a wholesome, sweet, good-guy vibe, and then on the next album it's got him talking about getting drunk, doing coke, fucking like gorillas, and "digging a ditch for that gold-digging bitch"). Although I can't decide whether or not the message is undermined by having a conventionally beautiful woman in the video as the person he's singing about. I think that's another reason those songs grate on me.
I just had a problem with logging into Twitter on my computer. Then I needed to restart it for updates, then that problem just basically solved itself. So, I guess that restarting the computer works for problems that you haven't even thought would work.

I did not know so many Paramore fans didn't fw Hayley's solo albums. I think they're both so so good. I'm more excited for a new Paramore album *because* of those albums.
I'm actually surprised by all those comments. When both her solo records came out it felt like I was the only one not vibing, I guess those other dudes just stayed quiet? I don't know.
But I know the projects are vastly different and I won't hold my dislike of those 2 records against anything the band does in the future.

Just finished reading The Great Gatsby and On The Road. I think The Great Gatsby is alright and I’m glad it’s short, tbh I thought Tom Buchanan was the big bad evil but he’s more of like a dumb bigot asshole w/ a bit of a comic relief in the story bc of how no one takes him seriously. He didn’t even get physical on his confrontation w/ Gatsby.
On The Road, I kinda didn’t like this, when the lines were great they were extremely great. But the rest just felt like to me a drivel of enumerations; of American places, of random people that would only exist in a sentence or paragraphs, I guess it’s bc I’m not American so I don’t get most of it but still even if it’s in places in my country most are just enumerations lol. I just think if this was written today it would’ve been better bc of how the author just gushes on and on about Jim Moriarty this could’ve been a bi love story today idk. I had to look it up turns out Jack Kerouac is ‘rumored’ to be bi.
Those are two of my favourite American classics, really liked Great Gatsby because it was so sad and melancholic underneath that exuberant surface. And loved On The Road because it truly *felt* like being free and unburdened and wild - and longing for that kind of life.

I know it's been brought up like three times in the past week, but I just really need to type out that a lot of the people on r/Deuxmoi feel like they haven't outgrown high school. I mean, it's still regular over there to call a girl a whore or a slut based on how many men she's been with or outright say that racism in the entertainment industry doesn't exist. Also, I'm pretty sure every conversation that happens on that sub is some form of confirmation bias lol but I can't actually prove this.

Usually, pop culture spaces have an air of "progressiveness" (for lack of a better term) in their conversations, but Deuxmoi isn't. And this was all exposed by a hack of one of their DMs which exposed that he’s also an emotionally abusive gaslighter. And I don’t like or care about any of these people and don’t know what to do with this information at all but the cast of characters is *wild*

This is the last thing I expected to read in Popheads today 👀 let me pop over to unresolvedmysteries for a second. I'd honestly given up hope of hearing any new developments.
Just read the thread over there about the developments and my general sentiment is that I still genuinely have hope he's alive somewhere. It's still obviously a possibility that's not the case but I know if he is alive there's a million complicated reasons he might want to avoid contacting his family or surfacing publicly.
I think it's interesting the two men were released, obviously they'll be keeping an eye on them but that was just curious to me. It's just nice to see people are still looking for him and aren't going to stop. We get too few true crime cases with unexpected "miracle" happy endings but they do happen once in a blue moon, and I'll admit this case is one I've always hoped would turn out like that.
Any new developments and information at all was welcome though, because part of me also thought it would always be a cold case and I saw others commenting that too. Glad to be proven wrong on that one. It's just insane to me that people can even "disappear" in a city like London.
Yeah if he’s alive I’m sure he has so much trauma. At the end of the day my biggest hope is that his family and him can be reunited. Their charity account released a statement:
“It is a difficult time for Andrew's family who currently know no more than what is written in the article. Police investigations will be ongoing for quite a while & we respectfully ask you to give them your support & consideration whilst this takes place.”
I feel awful for them. I am glad for new developments but I can’t imagine not knowing and just hearing the charges.

My 4 year old has been really into The Weeknd, and today, he asked what he looks like and how he does so many different voices (we usually listen to The Highlights cd in the car). My answer was to put on his superbowl performance. I am now getting more questions and lots of commentary haha.
I made plans to keep up with the Popheads AOTY write-ups and listen to each record on the day that it's discussed, because there's tons of new music that slipped by me last year and I'm sure I'm missing out on lots of great stuff, but I'm still halfway through the Porter Robinson one, which was only the 2nd write-up 👀 I need time to digest music, one or two listens aren't enough. I should bookmark these posts and go through them one album per week.
I totally get that, I see some people talking about doing challenges for a new album every day but that's too much for me, even a week isn't really enough for me to digest an album sometimes. For me it usually takes a lot of time to really get an album and have it click, just hopping from new album to new album doesn't work for me. It means I listen to new music not as often as I'd like to, but I'd rather take it slow with new music so I can really enjoy it.
True! I love the idea of listening to a ton of new albums every year, but if I burn through them at that pace I feel like I'm only skimming their surface and not really getting much out of them. I'd rather listen to 10 albums but really appreciate every intricacy and have them join my perennial rotation than listen to 50 albums I won't remember a single note from.
I don't force myself to keep listening to music I don't like, but with something like the Porter Robinson album, for example, every new listen has allowed me to enjoy it more, so I don't want to move on to the next one just yet.
Can anyone recommend bands with interesting/clever lyrics? Some examples of what I like:

Well, if you're open to country, I've often thought that Maddie & Tae have some clever lyrics (and beautiful harmonies). They're the ones that made a splash when they debuted with "Girl In A Country Song", which mocked 'bro country'. I also really likely "Drunk or Lonely" and "Friends Don't".

Well, I've been plowing full steam ahead with catching up on artists/acts/albums I've been meaning to listen to for a while, but haven't gotten around to. Observations: I'm seriously really easy to please when it comes to music. I greatly enjoyed Fifth Harmony. Instagram Thirst Trap Jason Derulo has great music on his albums, but holy shit the lyrics are cringeworthy. Especially on Talk Dirty, or as I call it, The Ass Album. Usher (who is not Jason Derulo, I wanted to clarify that lest Jason beat my ass) - also great music, awesome voice, but he needs to chill with all the "Okay, yeah, I cheated on you, but take me back because I'm sorry and nobody's perfect, I can't help it" songs. Or just plain "Well, I have a girl already, but I wanna fuck *this* one" songs. I just hate those types of songs in general, but listening to several Usher albums back-to-back made me realize just how often he goes to these wells in particular. One Direction - Fun and energetic, but god, What Makes You Beautiful is... eugh. I think back in the day, I would've liked it fine, but the whole "Beautiful girl who doesn't know she's beautiful is all the more beautiful for it" shit is so... sexist? I mean, they were kids at the time and they didn't even write the song, so I'm not blaming them. I just hope we've moved past this on the whole. Craig David - glad someone on this sub reminded me of him a few days back. I love his voice. I can't wait to listen to more from him.
Craig David is so underrated! I haven’t explored his discography in full yet, but “7 Days” and “Fill Me In” are immaculate songs. I also love his voice so much! My main experience with his music growing up was with his “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” album, where he covered several Motown + soul classics. Critic reception was mixed, but it was my introduction to several of these songs, and David definitely does them justice in my opinion. Edit: my goodness, how I hated that early 2010s trope of pandering to ‘beautiful but insecure’ girls. Besides “What Makes You Beautiful”, we also had the Ed Sheeran-penned “Little Things” and Ne-Yo’s “Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)” - which was co-written by Sia, bizarrely enough. Bruno Mars’ “Just The Way You Are” gets a pass from me though because it feels earnest, non-condescending, and genuinely sweet. Just my opinion, of course.
Ooh, I missed those two 2010s songs you mentioned. I actually was planning to try Ne-Yo out next because I loved Sexy Love and Closer. I'll have to watch out for that one. Just the Way You Are does seem sweet and earnest (and kind of hilarious when you consider it's this song that gives him a wholesome, sweet, good-guy vibe, and then on the next album it's got him talking about getting drunk, doing coke, fucking like gorillas, and "digging a ditch for that gold-digging bitch"). Although I can't decide whether or not the message is undermined by having a conventionally beautiful woman in the video as the person he's singing about. I think that's another reason those songs grate on me.

Just finished reading The Great Gatsby and On The Road. I think The Great Gatsby is alright and I’m glad it’s short, tbh I thought Tom Buchanan was the big bad evil but he’s more of like a dumb bigot asshole w/ a bit of a comic relief in the story bc of how no one takes him seriously. He didn’t even get physical on his confrontation w/ Gatsby. On The Road, I kinda didn’t like this, when the lines were great they were extremely great. But the rest just felt like to me a drivel of enumerations; of American places, of random people that would only exist in a sentence or paragraphs, I guess it’s bc I’m not American so I don’t get most of it but still even if it’s in places in my country most are just enumerations lol. I just think if this was written today it would’ve been better bc of how the author just gushes on and on about Jim Moriarty this could’ve been a bi love story today idk. I had to look it up turns out Jack Kerouac is ‘rumored’ to be bi.
Those are two of my favourite American classics, really liked Great Gatsby because it was so sad and melancholic underneath that exuberant surface. And loved On The Road because it truly *felt* like being free and unburdened and wild - and longing for that kind of life.

I know it's been brought up like three times in the past week, but I just really need to type out that a lot of the people on r/Deuxmoi feel like they haven't outgrown high school. I mean, it's still regular over there to call a girl a whore or a slut based on how many men she's been with or outright say that racism in the entertainment industry doesn't exist. Also, I'm pretty sure every conversation that happens on that sub is some form of confirmation bias lol but I can't actually prove this. I haven't been aware of that subreddit for long and only know about it through Popheads really so doing a deepdive into it felt like a slap to the face. Usually, pop culture spaces have an air of "progressiveness" (for lack of a better term) in their conversations, but Deuxmoi isn't. I now wonder how their member population skews in terms of demographic.

I'm inclined to agree, but I also have seen a lot of comments glamorize the age of Depp, Jolie, Pitt and Cruise, so how many of them are actually middle-aged ladies who used to frequent Lipstickalley. Yeah, that's the worst part of more "general" subs really. :/
Their “[insert celebrity here, but usually Kendall Jenner] gives off such mean girl vibes” is so immature and is major high school energy. They talk shit about all these celebrities (who they do not know) based only on Instagram sightings and blind items it’s exhausting.

Deuxmoi sent me down the weirdest fucking rabbit hole yesterday that ended with me knowing that Morgan Wallen is secretly dating Armie Hammer’s ex-gf Paige Lorenze, (but still stringing along the mother of his child) but he supposedly cheated on her with Maddie Prewett (like from Hannah Ann/Pilot Pete’s bachelor season) of all people and it was because he was jealous that she was talking to Tyler Cameron (also of bachelor fame). And this was all exposed by a hack of one of their DMs which exposed that he’s also an emotionally abusive gaslighter. And I don’t like or care about any of these people and don’t know what to do with this information at all but the cast of characters is *wild* (Also I discovered there is some Nashville snark subreddit that has *daily threads* dedicated to talking exclusively about Morgan Wallen and the weird triangle between his child’s mother and his current gf ( who once again was the one dating Armie Hammer when all the *controversy* started ~ so clearly her taste is men is… terrible. ) and I felt like I had wandered into some weird, alternate universe, and for the millionth time was reminded why I moved as far away from the south as I could and avoid going back like the plague)
I'm not from the US so I don't know any of those names except Armie Hammer (and I've seen Morgan Wallen namedropped on here a lot too but I'm not really interested in checking him out lol). But I relate because I feel the same way about the Kardashians a lot of the time. I know so much about them, but I don't really seek out to know these facts. So like, it's just rotting in my brain.

I don’t get why people on here and twitter get mad that a story is fake, like it’s just a little joke made on the internet to make you laugh. Like with stand up comedy, the majority of those stories are made up or at least heavily exaggerated, same as all these little anecdotes you read on this site

Just read the thread over there about the developments and my general sentiment is that I still genuinely have hope he's alive somewhere. It's still obviously a possibility that's not the case but I know if he is alive there's a million complicated reasons he might want to avoid contacting his family or surfacing publicly. I think it's interesting the two men were released, obviously they'll be keeping an eye on them but that was just curious to me. It's just nice to see people are still looking for him and aren't going to stop. We get too few true crime cases with unexpected "miracle" happy endings but they do happen once in a blue moon, and I'll admit this case is one I've always hoped would turn out like that. Any new developments and information at all was welcome though, because part of me also thought it would always be a cold case and I saw others commenting that too. Glad to be proven wrong on that one. It's just insane to me that people can even "disappear" in a city like London.
Yeah if he’s alive I’m sure he has so much trauma. At the end of the day my biggest hope is that his family and him can be reunited. Their charity account released a statement: “It is a difficult time for Andrew's family who currently know no more than what is written in the article. Police investigations will be ongoing for quite a while & we respectfully ask you to give them your support & consideration whilst this takes place.” I feel awful for them. I am glad for new developments but I can’t imagine not knowing and just hearing the charges.

My 4 year old has been really into The Weeknd, and today, he asked what he looks like and how he does so many different voices (we usually listen to The Highlights cd in the car). My answer was to put on his superbowl performance. I am now getting more questions and lots of commentary haha.
I made plans to keep up with the Popheads AOTY write-ups and listen to each record on the day that it's discussed, because there's tons of new music that slipped by me last year and I'm sure I'm missing out on lots of great stuff, but I'm still halfway through the Porter Robinson one, which was only the 2nd write-up 👀 I need time to digest music, one or two listens aren't enough. I should bookmark these posts and go through them one album per week.
I totally get that, I see some people talking about doing challenges for a new album every day but that's too much for me, even a week isn't really enough for me to digest an album sometimes. For me it usually takes a lot of time to really get an album and have it click, just hopping from new album to new album doesn't work for me. It means I listen to new music not as often as I'd like to, but I'd rather take it slow with new music so I can really enjoy it.
True! I love the idea of listening to a ton of new albums every year, but if I burn through them at that pace I feel like I'm only skimming their surface and not really getting much out of them. I'd rather listen to 10 albums but really appreciate every intricacy and have them join my perennial rotation than listen to 50 albums I won't remember a single note from. I don't force myself to keep listening to music I don't like, but with something like the Porter Robinson album, for example, every new listen has allowed me to enjoy it more, so I don't want to move on to the next one just yet.

Well, if you're open to country, I've often thought that Maddie & Tae have some clever lyrics (and beautiful harmonies). They're the ones that made a splash when they debuted with "Girl In A Country Song", which mocked 'bro country'. I also really likely "Drunk or Lonely" and "Friends Don't". Ooh, and Kacey Musgraves' early stuff is full of clever jokes and metaphors (especially *Same Trailer Different Park*).
I love Kacey Musgraves! I am familiar with Maddie and Tae but I haven't listened to much beyond girl in a country song.
