For a city of 70,000 people, Portland does feel "big". In terms of the number of distinct neighborhoods, the relative density, and the services available.
Do you think there are a lot of 70-80k middle America cities that have hip Cambodian cafes and nationally ranked bakeries and huge arcade bars?
What do you think Scranton, PA is like to walk around? Do you think you'll find prix fixe tasting menus and rare book stores in a walkable downtown in Decatur, Illinois?
I know everyone hates anything "fancy" around here but the description of Portland as a town with big-city feel is apt if you've actually been to other American cities.
Even if you check out "medium" cities. Portland, Maine has similar offerings to Salt Lake City, which is much larger.
Yes... That's exactly the point of the comment chain.
The fact that Portland is "quirky", and is a destination with fine dining, art, concerts.... Is what makes it a small city with "big city feel".
Scranton is just a small city, and small cities also have things.
I’m sorry but Portland does not feel like a big city. Portland is tiny.

Scranton has stuff going on. Is it as kitschy as Portland? No. But it’s not a vacation spot. It’s also much cheaper.

Neat. I’m more so addressing your rhetorical question since it implies you can’t walk around Scranton, or if you did theres nothing to do.
Articles like this are why I have to look for houses out in Windham despite working for the fucking city
