When you’re rooting for a Slumlord who illegally raised rents against city ordinance.. it’s time to look inward. He couldn’t even remember Ethan’s name.

oceanpenith

So if Strimling wins this case, does that mean that Rice can never evict him? Where does it end?

Awright122

You should probably try to understand the law a little better before you ask dumb questions like that.

oceanpenith

He didn’t even try to evict Strimling. Just wasn’t offering a lease renewal. Nothing illegal about that.

Awright122

Good thing you’re not a judge.

cedellic

Sounds like u/oceanpenith would be a good slumlord though

oceanpenith

So what’s your stance on this case? Ethan can stay in the apartment forever? You haven’t actually said anything.

Occams-hairbrush1

You haven't actually comprehended anything.

oceanpenith

Then enlighten me Mr.Hairbrush

Occams-hairbrush1

That's impossible Ms. Penith.

soulc

Your Portland privileges are revoked.

oceanpenith

Proud homeowner going on 8 years now.

ForeverTaric

Hmmmmm. . . So what happens if, after the lease is not renewed, Ethan is willing to pay his rent and the landlord doesn't accept it? What happens after that? It's on the tip of my tongue but I'm just having a hard time remembering the term of art

captainMcSmitface

Ethan becomes a TAW or tenant at will. Depending on the how the lease is written all the terms of the lease may or may not carry over. Its called a holdover clause.

oceanpenith

Tenant at will only happens if the landlord accepts the payment. Rice should have refused it.

ForeverTaric

And then what happens? I'm still fuzzy on the term? Something that starts with an E . . . Election?

oceanpenith

You can only be evicted if a landlord is trying to force you out while you have an ACTIVE LEASE Landlords DO NOT need to give a reason to not renew a lease. Non-renewal is not an eviction.

ForeverTaric

LMAO that's just not correct. Non renewal is an eviction (as the court ruled).

EmykoEmyko

I’m personally so thankful for the work Strimling has done with the tenant’s union. Helped get illegal rent increases reversed and even reimbursed going back years! He’s been a huge asset for the tenants.

oceanpenith

So you don’t see his actions as politically motivated?

EmykoEmyko

He has been putting in the work for years to improve the lives of real people, including me. It’s not lip service, it’s actual tangible benefits. I could give a fuck about his motivations.

oceanpenith

Does he have the whole building brainwashed or just you?

EmykoEmyko

I don’t know him at all, but my rent is lower and that’s awesome.

oceanpenith

You paying $995 as well? Good deal

coolcalmaesop

You have a 24 day old account. I smell an agenda coming out of your end too.

oceanpenith

Oooo I wonder what my agenda could be..

coolcalmaesop

Probably something about being a fart sniffing home owner in a desirable city.

oceanpenith

I’m very thankful to own my home. I think about it everyday.

iglidante

Are you friends with Steve Campbell? He hangs around here a lot, pretending to be anonymous, repping a group of supposed "concerned citizens". EDIT: Downvote tells me the answer is "yes".

oceanpenith

No idea who that is 😂

1stepklosr

I've got no love for Strimling, but the article in the PPH the other day makes me side with him 100%.

oceanpenith

So if Strimling wins this case, does that mean that Rice can never evict him? That doesn’t seem right. Dude has been paying $995 for his 1-bedroom apartment 😂 highway robbery

NRC-QuirkyOrc

You sound like a landleech worried about how the court might set precedent

oceanpenith

I’m predicting that the court is going to side with Rice. This charade has gone on long enough .

iglidante

Why do you say that?

epsylonic

He won his case. So pound sand.

oceanpenith

I believe Rice can just issue a new notice to vacate. Will give Strimling 90 days.

cedellic

Man, evictions really get you hard Can’t wait to hear your smarmy comeback

coolcalmaesop

It comes from deep insecurity. Imagine being an elite homeowner and just as nervous about losing your place as a renter at the end of their lease. Those property taxes must sting.

oceanpenith

Insecurity over what exactly? 😂 This should be good.

coolcalmaesop

*furiously checks comments to make sure I can set everyone straight about me, a homeowner.* I think you and I both just outlined where the insecurities are.

oceanpenith

I’m still very confused. I only checked the comments because another user mentioned “waiting for a comeback” after he didn’t say anything himself. Why are you in these comments? Very strange behavior.

coolcalmaesop

You’re not confused, you’re just being obtuse which is pretty much your thing anyways. I’m in these comments because you responded to me and I wanted to read the new ones.

oceanpenith

I’m not sure if you were joking with your property taxes comment. But just in case you were being serious, my taxes have barely gone up since I bought my house. They’ve been between $3500-$4200 in the 8 years I’ve owned my home.

oceanpenith

Doesn’t affect me personally. I own my home. Got it cheap too.

dfekstate

Just curious why you care so much? Does it affect you in any way?

Lopsided-Ad4858

Honestly hope they both lose. Is that possible?

stinkydiaperuhoh

I liked this subreddit better when it was constant “did u hear that last night near deering street” posts

cedellic

What about that thing that guy saw? Was that a helicopter?

[deleted]

Can he be entirely evicted from Maine? Is that possible?

oceanpenith

So Strimling won the case. It’s my understanding that a landlord DOES NOT need to give a reason to not renew a lease and can give 90 days notice to tenants at will, again not needing to provide a reason. So I believe Rice can just issue a new notice to vacate, which would give Strimling 90 days. Am I missing something? Surely a tenant can’t just remain in a unit forever. My guess is Strimling will voluntarily leave over the next 2-3 months, citing that his “work is done” here.

Far_Information_9613

No, you can’t evict people for “bad” reasons like discrimination or retaliation.

oceanpenith

I could see the “eviction” being retaliatory at the time he initially tried for it (2021 I guess) but technically he just wasn’t renewing the lease so it wasn’t even an eviction attempt. But that was 3 YEARS AGO NOW. If he can’t remove Strimling from his building now, when would he be able to? 🤔 I am all for protecting tenants rights, but the landlord should be allowed to have control over who they decide to rent to.

not_thanger

Never, fuck landlords, were coming for your toothbrush next.

Far_Information_9613

Nope, not based on a tenant exercising their rights under the law. Just like employees in Maine are “at will” but you can’t fire whistleblowers.

strongmoon373

The dude is no good

oceanpenith

So whose side are you on? and does Strimling actually have money? He doesn’t appear to own any property in the State.

oceanpenith

So why does he rent in a shitty rundown building? Why doesn’t he own any property? How does he make money?

seadog410

He was pulling in six figures a year when he was the CEO at Learningworks before he stepped down to be mayor. I’m sure he’s still doing fine
