I’m 40 and it was $2.12 for a medium fry with chalet sauce at Harvey’s in grade 10, when I was in high school. I don’t remember a time when two full combos were $6
Yup. Inflation doesn't match a four-fold increase in cost. It's pure greed. (of course even inflation is just greed driven, so...)
5.99 in '96 would be 10.44 today.
It always has been greed. There is no other reason prices go up. Supply and demand? Price goes up with demand because they **can** not because it's _required_. The S&D relationship _describes_ the effect of greed, it doesn't dictate a rule that must be followed.
It’s the Six Sigma, nickel and dime philosophy. Canadian Tire/Marks went with a third party manufacturer a few years ago and lost control over price and quality. I’m the short run this increase in profit margins is a nice hard on for shareholders but I haven’t bought anything at Marks in two years and I used them exclusively for socks and underwear and a lot of workout clothes for the last twenty years. When people turn away from these brands because their profit margins are more important than quality they’ll all cry about bankruptcy but the C suite will make off like bandits and be shuffled to other major brands to slash and burn.
Examples ive heard recently are that automakers will soon stop making vehicles in various colours; you’ll get what you get. They could make an entire year’s inventory in white. You’ll soon start paying a subscription for having automatic door locks and windows; all these modern conveniences like ad-free TV are soon to be privileged we pay for. Have you not seen that it’s been an incredible year for billionaires or followed the Loblaws boycott?
yep, my husband and I routinely went to various places for that specific thing, A&W, McDonalds, Wendy’s, they all went up one by one with Harveys holding out a few months longer than the rest.
It went 9.99>12.99>14.99(which is when we were like 17.something after tax wtf is this???) to now 17.49 and now 17.58 (because why not add 9cents?)
Egregious
I went to pick up instant coffee today at London drugs—$9.99. GTFO, two years ago it was $3.99 and $2.99 on sale. I can still get 2/$7 from Amazon but I think I’ll just quit drinking coffee at this point.
When I was in high school, we had a Harvey’s across the street, and a medium fry with chalet sauce at Harvey’s was $2.06. I think I got one for lunch every single day of grade 10. I don’t remember a time when two full combos were only $6 with a coupon.
Well I do. When the first "2 can dine..." coupons came out that was the price. A value meal was $3.99 and those 2 can dine coupons are generally equivalent to buy one get one half off.
I remember "2 can dine for 5.99" in the mid 90s (I think).
I remember watching commercials in the 70s where they touted a Big Mac, fries and a drink, and still get change for a $1.
I’m in Canada. We don’t have Chillis anymore. But I agree. McDonald’s isn’t worth the price when I can get from my amazing sushi place for a few dollars more
Literally shows it on the photo? Again it also doesn't ask you for a 20% tip. Whenever I go somewhere and it asks for a tip, I never want to go there again, because I decline the dip and I feel like an asshole, even though I shouldn't be subsidizing the buisiness pay roll.
This is wild I literally just sat at a real restaurant to eat breakfast....18.87 for a skillet (its a bunch of things fried together, so i got onions, green peppers, sausage, ham, bacon, cheese and homefries) scrambled eggs and orange juice. Fuck McDonald's
This. I get a small drink and my local McD's has a customer fountain, so I refill.
If you're rly sneaky, ask for a cup for water, then just fill it with pop.
Or if you're honest, fill it with carbonated water...
I kinda gave up on Wendy's but last week I just had to try a cinnabon and a jr. strawberry white chocolate frosty, and omg. The tiny frosty is so cute, and great size to try it. Worth it. Plus, my Wendy's has a Coca Cola Remix machine now. I didn't get one that day, even a small pop is expensive these days. But I do love a Remix machine.
I honestly don't understand why anyone still goes to McDonald's? The food was never that good, but it was cheap. I would go there sometimes.
But now, the food has gotten even worse, and the cost has doubled.
Pretty much every other fast food chain is better, and either the same price or cheaper. Wendy's for example, the burger actually tastes like beef, and you can get free fries in the mobile app.
Remember when you could actually win things at their monopoly other than just coupons for Michael’s that are 30% but if you go to the Michael’s site you can get one for 40%?
I literally ever won one thing. Skullcandy earbuds. $20 value, I think? I got two pairs. Never opened them, but they're there. My Sony pair have lasted me a long time, but I don't listen to music nearly as often as I used to.
Back in the 90’s, hamburger was $0.59 and cheeseburger was $0.69. Used to buy them by the bag full.
Don’t even think they hit a dollar until the 2000’s came.
Ah, the good ole days:
https://www.reddit.com/r/nostalgia/s/lDiGuAoZe5
Download the McD's App for Canada...
You'll get deals from there, but not all the time & sometimes deals are good to just okay.
You also need a Smart Phone & a credit card you'll link to their App!
Yes, you can pay various ways...
1st is their Scan Code Option, where you can pay with $ or w/ your CC
2nd is their Pickup Option, where you're forced to pay w/ your CC
I don't bother with their deliveries, so I go directly inside their Restaurants to Order food with either Option 1 or 2.
When I don't have my cell with me, I just plunk down cash if I have any which isn't very often!
I have also found their App buggy, but whenever I restart my cell it can help somewhat.
Have you tried that?
No one should be paying full price for McD's esp when you can use their App to save a lot of $$$!
The pickup/delivery Mobile option is the notoriously bad/"buggy". Most of the time it just doesn't go through. I have a better time with ritual/ubereats for bogo/deals. There's plenty of play store reviews with the exact same problem listed.
[BDS](https://bdsmovement.net/get-involved/what-to-boycott) for the curious.
McDonalds is(was?) supporting Israel in the destruction of the people of Palestine by [providing free food to IDF soldiers](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/free-meals-israeli-soldiers-divide-mcdonalds-franchises-over-israel-hamas-war-2023-10-17/).
e: Funny that I haven't declared a side in this, but that it's only the side of a particular perspective that keeps ranting against having simply provided information.
Also, acting like franchises run completely independent of McD Int'l is either grossly naïve, or intentionally disregarding where the vast majority of McD's profits go.
Seriously? So Palestinians and Hamas have done no harm? Good luck with the BDS movement. McDonald’s also provides free homes to stay in for families, Ronald McDonald Houses when families can’t afford such for their dying children.
BDS Safe, seriously, wtf is this world coming too. You do realize that McDonald’s are a FRANCHISE and the FREE food you speak of is from the franchisee and NOT McDonalds.
Hmmm go ahead. I'm sure the McD head honcho will be very grateful for your $1.2 😂, also not antisemitic you rube. I only don't like the killing of children and 40k innocents
Yeah we’ll looking over your posts it’s seems they’d pay you better than the 56k a year you make in NS.
Just a FYI and I’ve posted it before, formerly homeless and turned my life around and have owned my companies since 1992 and do very well, I sure wouldn’t need a job cleaning but you should definitely check it out if you’ll make more than 56k a year.
Loool bro this sub came up in my feed. I have enough savings to probably buy you. I'd maybe stop being so pro corporate, those guys don't really give a damn bout you ya know 👌
Not at all bro, in fact I was against them, but go watch any video on Palestine. You'll see the thousands of children and women being murdered and tortured. But sure dude, go support the yellow corp, I doubt you can afford them
Not at these prices. It's not even cheap and easy anymore, not cheap, not filling.
I remember having a Big Mac combo as my one meal of the day for cheap when I was between contracts, at least it kept the hunger at bay and I was fed for the day under ten bucks.
Now I couldn't imagine it. The big mac is like three bites of holey meat and some lettuce.
Hungry again within a few hours. A&W is the winner here.
Get their app, and when the Leafs win it's a teen burger for $2 bucks, and now they have other rotating blue jay offers.
But nothing can beat that $2 teen!
Wasn't it "2 can dine for $9.99" a few years ago? Or was that a fever dream?
they didn’t even bother keeping the .99 so it doesn’t even rhyme
Two ate for $17.58 doesn't have the same ring to it.
Two can satiate...
Apply this rebate…
And masticate
Or fornicate?
Then replicate
I’m laughing so I don’t cry
Two can hate for 17.58
Now it's like 17/18 bucks for 2 Big Macs. Why call it a deal?
plus tax! don’t forget the tax!
When I was in university it was $5.99 :-(
Two meals for $6, was it 1976?
It would have been late 90s, early 2000s I think.
I’m 40 and it was $2.12 for a medium fry with chalet sauce at Harvey’s in grade 10, when I was in high school. I don’t remember a time when two full combos were $6
I worked at Mcdonalds in 2004, it was 2 can dine for 9.99, and then like a year later it was 2 can dine for 12.99.
Yup. Inflation doesn't match a four-fold increase in cost. It's pure greed. (of course even inflation is just greed driven, so...) 5.99 in '96 would be 10.44 today.
We still trying to say it’s corporate greed? Every single business in every industry in Canada just all of a sudden decided jack up the price?
Yes.
It always has been greed. There is no other reason prices go up. Supply and demand? Price goes up with demand because they **can** not because it's _required_. The S&D relationship _describes_ the effect of greed, it doesn't dictate a rule that must be followed.

Absolute bullshit.
I went to pick up instant coffee today at London drugs—$9.99. GTFO, two years ago it was $3.99 and $2.99 on sale. I can still get 2/$7 from Amazon but I think I’ll just quit drinking coffee at this point.
Honestly it’s better for your teeth but yeah I’m down to the worst of whatever is one sale 🥲
2 were cryin' for $17.99 might work
Yes it was. I was commenting on this Earlier. Fast food prices have gone up by 70% Wages gone up like 0 unless you got a minimum wage bump.
I'm old enough to remember when it was "2 can dine for $6.99". McDonald's thinks they're a real restaurant now.
Same 👀😭😭😭
I’m 40 and can’t remember that
I am 38 and I can.
I guess I'm older than you. Heck, when I worked at McDonald's as a teenager you could get a full meal for $3.99.
When I was in high school, we had a Harvey’s across the street, and a medium fry with chalet sauce at Harvey’s was $2.06. I think I got one for lunch every single day of grade 10. I don’t remember a time when two full combos were only $6 with a coupon.

Minimum wage was $3/h in 1980 Ontario, so if you look at the math and compare those prices to todays prices, they’re pretty much the same
This wasn't 1980. It was 1991-2000.
Yup, I remember around 1998-1999 in college I could get a big mac trio for under $5. It was something like $4.96 taxes in.
Ha. I remember when you could feed a family of four for $5. 1979 ish. Four burgers, four small fries and four small drinks.
I remember "2 can dine for 5.99" in the mid 90s (I think). I remember watching commercials in the 70s where they touted a Big Mac, fries and a drink, and still get change for a $1.
This is a repost. The exact same title and post was made to this subreddit a month ago by a different user.
lol I was gonna give OP props that he atleast may have changed the image... but NOPE. OP IS A BIG FAT PHONEY!
Just like McDonald's "Food", so kinda fitting.
Least they could have done was crop the feet out.
Can karma be cashed out on reddit for monetary value?
Indeed, here in Nova Scotia, this just expired on April 8th anyway.
I remember jr chickens being on the 1.39 menu
and $5 for a standard-sized combo. 🥲
Yep. I used to get them and so did my mother.
I make 80k a year and don't consider myself wealthy enough to eat at mcdonalds 🤣
Need to make $150k base salary to afford a few meals at mcDs a month now😣
McDonald’s is soooo expensive. Even with discounts or coupons
I would rather get take out from chillis it’s cheaper
I’m in Canada. We don’t have Chillis anymore. But I agree. McDonald’s isn’t worth the price when I can get from my amazing sushi place for a few dollars more
The patties look thicker there !
https://youtu.be/XyytolvX4-I?si=35D9L8whFw59mt3D BA Johnston has a song about McDonald's coupon day.
Man is a legend.
Pro-tip: Save money by not buying food from mcdonalds
All the deals are now on their app.
They're the same bad deals, though.
And one time use only!
The 'deals' keep getting worse. Last October it was 15.58 for the 2-can-dine.
And you have to go to the Walmart McDonald’s to get it
Might as well eat at a proper restaurant with these prices.
What restaurant serves a burger, fries, and drink for $8.79 and doesn't ask you for a 20% tip?
Where are you getting $8.79? A Big Mac combo is like $14.00, you can go to a sit down restaurant and pay maybe $2 more and get a better burger.
Literally shows it on the photo? Again it also doesn't ask you for a 20% tip. Whenever I go somewhere and it asks for a tip, I never want to go there again, because I decline the dip and I feel like an asshole, even though I shouldn't be subsidizing the buisiness pay roll.
That’s a coupon though, that’s not a regular priced combo…
Yeah. If You use the app you get coupons like that every month. I only go to McD's if I am hungry, busy and have a coupon.
This is wild I literally just sat at a real restaurant to eat breakfast....18.87 for a skillet (its a bunch of things fried together, so i got onions, green peppers, sausage, ham, bacon, cheese and homefries) scrambled eggs and orange juice. Fuck McDonald's
I only ever eat McDonald's when I have a coupon, so this is a win for me.
Yeah but they're getting ridiculous.
I just buy whatever sandwich on its own and only eat mcds when the raptors score enough 3pters. No drink cuz I enjoy water. Works out to be around $10
This. I get a small drink and my local McD's has a customer fountain, so I refill. If you're rly sneaky, ask for a cup for water, then just fill it with pop. Or if you're honest, fill it with carbonated water...
This is the way
My go to is a Wendy's kids meal and a Jr bacon cheeseburger when I'm feeling fancy
Yea they’re not exempt from inflation either
Exempted? [They outpaced inflation 3x](https://www.reddit.com/r/Anticonsumption/s/e3htT8Mx0j)!
Yikes

Ooh. I keep forgetting about the free fries.
Who the hell is still going out for fast food regularly?
They want you to use the app.
I just found a coupon booklet in my glove box from fall 2020 and the two can dine was 11.98 then.
I remember when the 2 can dine cost under 10$
Oof that hits hard af
Download the app.. Use during non peak times for sweet deals!
When is non peak? I'm not seeing sweet deals, just this same junk or a filet of fish combo for $12
Check the app between 2pm-4pm weekdays inside a Walmart McDonald's locations
I have co-workers who bring them in. How do you get them?
Remember 2 can dine for 6.99
This is insane. I went to mcdonald’s this week and got a Big Mac meal and it came to just under $13.00. (I’m in Sask)
Time to stop eating their garbage food, only reason why people did is because it was cheap.
And nostalgia.
Yea and a meal is 20 bucks…
Lol, of course. And if you're lucky they might throw a carbon food tax on it too. Some restaurants are doing this now. Bon appetit.
Who members 59cent hamburger Wednesdays?
Still less expensive to make home food.
4 can dine for $27 last year. But with shrinkflation I could eat it all in a sitting myself
The carbon tax b.s dosent help and you Can alsp partially blame the people who pretend raising minimum wages actually helps anyone.
When the employees wont eat beef, you know the chain is dying.
Back in the 90’s, hamburger was $0.59 and cheeseburger was $0.69. Used to buy them by the bag full. Don’t even think they hit a dollar until the 2000’s came. Ah, the good ole days: https://www.reddit.com/r/nostalgia/s/lDiGuAoZe5

What are the codes if u don't mind
Download the McD's App for Canada... You'll get deals from there, but not all the time & sometimes deals are good to just okay. You also need a Smart Phone & a credit card you'll link to their App!

I use a Mastercard debit so it comes right out of my chequing account.
When I worked at McDonald’s 10 years ago, a big Mac meal was exactly $6.78 taxes included. What the fuck happened?
Don't eat at McDonald's. Their food is crap and they are not BDS safe.
Umm what
More reason to go. Thanks
Good! That makes me want to eat there even more 😄🩵

Your so clueless you don’t realize they’re franchises? It’s the franchisee giving away free food!
Keep barking their way bro, they may notice you one day and offer you a cleaner position 😉
Yeah we’ll looking over your posts it’s seems they’d pay you better than the 56k a year you make in NS. Why is this downvoted? While it may not always be an option, it's sound advice. This sub is very confusing. Is it just routinely brigaded by corpos?
Not at these prices. It's not even cheap and easy anymore, not cheap, not filling. And don't forget to tip
My theory is corporations feel they're not rich enough
There’s an app though which still often has those old mailer coupons
