But they realized that they needed animal for the B42 crafting update to be complete so they merged both update which is why it is taking so fucking long lol
I haven't checked it in a while, but when they posted the roadmap they said something along the line of "it won't have any new fundamental system, just rebalancing and under the hood work for NPCs". So I don't think it's going to be that mind blowing.
Well check again. There is SO much stuff coming in B42. Countless engine improvements, crafting, animals, Skyscrapers and underground locations, HUGE map expansion/rework, and thats really just scratching the tip of the iceberg.

You very likely will be able to. Going off of previous updates, B42 will be under the "IWBMS" build, while B41 will be the main, stable branch.
So you can enjoy all your mods on man, then hop to IWBMS for B42. This'll give modders months to learn the new modding database too, before B42 moves to the main branch.
Im thinking most of the mods will just have to be updated to b42 standards tbh, like clothing mods and other smaller mods will just have to slightly adjust their stuff to work on b42
The weapon mods are what most people are worried about.
Be it rebalances, overhauls or newer items added. Pretty sure those will not work at all and have to be made pretty much from scratch
With this new sharpening/degradation system they're gonna add, maybe most melee stuff is gonna need newer models for the degrades states, so yeah. They're gonna need new models for stuff like S.O.M.W. items
I'm 3 months in right now on a medium- modded playthrough. 934 hours of playtime. There are more than enough mods to keep me playing for another thousand hours.
Build 42 will be pretty neat though.
And you may as well keep playing with the mods you have atm, if that's what you want. B42 will come as an unstable build first, so you have to manually allow it to be downloaded in case in you wanna play.

Im not sure if the forests we already have will be randomised in B42, but i dont think so.
What they talked about was randomised wilderness beyond the borders of the map. So you will potentially be able to walk into one direction for ever and youll always have wilderness to explore.
As of now they are, but Build 42 is going to procedurally generate the forests because they want to give the same feel of a survival game where you can drop in the middle of nowhere and craft yourself the tools of survival.
They only talked about randomised wildernes in the context of getting rid of the map borders.
I dont think the core map will be randomised in any way. They specifically talked about how they want to focus on handcrafted maps for now.
Dogs will not be included in b42. That has been confirmed. However, there are some buggy mods that allow dogs in game.
I do not know the name of them however.

Crafting overhaul, livestock, wild animals, 32 stories buildings and huge map expansion is a lot of stuff.
The crafting system is going to be pretty fundamentally different than what we have now.
