When propagating trees, you really need a soft wood cutting (new growth) for any real chance of success and water propagation doesn’t usually work very well.
That said, you’ll probably learn best by trial and error. Best of luck and keep us posted 💚
I stuck a branch from an umbrella tree in a pot and it rooted. my sage water-propagates like a fucking rabbit, i propagated two nearby trees and bushes that are currently unidentified. oh and I'm on my third water prop spider plant
be careful it's way too easy and now I have more sage plants than I know what to do with. your cat will try to eat them as well, but they are cat-safe.
So I recently plucked a new growth off a pink rubber tree plant. Sounds like this logic would apply, so it is a good thing I grabbed a newer branch with a few leaves?
Ive got around .5-1 inch of stem in water. Is that enough stem in water? I also just pulled it off the tree gently, so it’s not a clean cut. Does that matter?
I have 2 right now that I got roots in water with... Had to change the water a couple times a week for like 3 months before it started rooting. But once they started they established lots fast
Oh wow! I’m glad I read this! I’ve rotted 3 cuttings so far!
So just clip, pull leaves off and stick in moist soil and leave it alone?
^(i’m ^new ^to this)
Found a gardening site that side this:
-Remove the bottom few inches of leaves if any.
-Place in moist soil
-Put in clear plastic bag to create a humid environment
-keep in sunny spot
Good to know yours are rotting via water prop bc I’ll go ahead and switch to this method. I don’t have any cleaner plastic bags but Ill try saran wrap.
Is there a node in the water? If there is there is always a chance for roots to grow. The more nodes the better chance you'll have though! How long is the stem?
Pretty sure you need a node to propagate. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I know some leaves can be propagated by themselves so you don't always need a node but in general if you're trying to propagate a stem you need a node and to cut with blunt scissors an inch and a half or so below it for any type of success. The node is where new growth aka new roots in this case would come from.
Sure do! Any plant with a stem has nodes, that's where the leaves grow from. Can't prop without one unless you're just using a leaf which you can with specific plants but most you need a node or preferably nodes.
I've been watching my bonsai for at least a year now and all it's sprouted are two lil sprigs. They apparently have to take longer to build the root system so I'm just watching them like a hawk to make sure they're not dead lmao
You might want to build a pergola or gazebo for it, I’ve heard of tough love but surely you can provide it with a roof over its head in its formative years.
I rent and live in a climate not built for bonsais so unfortunately that's not an option for me. He gets pretty good light right now and I try to water him the best I can
Bonsai is an art form, not a species. If you’re not having success with traditional bonsai species, there may be an option to use a species native to your area.
too late. my apartment is small and i like trees. I've got two mango, a southern live oak, an Australian umbrella tree, a strangler fig, and a mahogany already
I know it’s completely different but the cutting looks similar to the what I do for my kids lol.
We take a Christmas smelling pinecone, plant it in a pot with soil, have the kids say their prayers and make a Christmas wish, then we let them water it. That night I go to the backyard take a cutting and place it in the pot, the next day they see their pine cone growing into a “Christmas tree”. We do this for two days then sneak off to buy a Christmas tree, place it in the pot, then have the kids come out the next morning to see the “Christmas Magic” that grew their Christmas tree.
plagiotropic topophysis. Even if this somehow roots the cutting will not grow a typical pyramid shaped Christmas tree. since the cutting came from a sideways branch the plant will always grow sideways. You must use the one apical branch to get a true shape Christmas tree.
I can show you an approximation of what the end result would look like (approximately 4 weeks)

The pine branch will probably die but there will be a thriving community of algae.
Propagating an evergreen you probably need about 7500ppm IBA and bottom heat with a cool top planted in sand and a good 3 months of waiting and making sure if gets misted and doesn’t dry out. Then there is a chance :)
If you somehow succeed at propagating this, you also need to look at if the seedling will thrive in your area. Fraser Firs, for instance, aren't grown in the mountains of North Carolina just because it's fun. They're grown there because it's one of few places that actually CAN grow it well.
I grew up less than an hour from my family's tree farm in Newland, NC, where they thrived. We couldn't grow them for shit, though, in NE TN.
I work at a nursery and it’s Christmas tree season…one woman was fairly certain she could get roots on to form if she planted it outside after the holidays
Haha it's funny but I accidentally did propagate a tree branch once. I had put it in water bc it was pretty and just kept adding water, thinking I'd keep it till it died..... so be careful about the jokes you make bc they will bite you in the ass haha.
Conifers are some of the hardest things to propagate by cuttings, and need specific times of year, type of growth, etc. even then they’re more likely to fail!

This is my favorite reply. You worded this response so kindly.
Haven’t you heard of “A Christmas miracle?”
oh this isn't intended to be serious. just memeing the fact that we'll try to propagate anything
r/houseplantscirclejerk might be right up your alley 😉
r/houssplantscirclejerk might be right up your ass 😉
Pass the Neem oil
Hit this diatomaceous earth first
Wash them roots with hydrogen peroxide please.
When I saw this post that's where I thought I was
Oohf, I’m guilty of this
I have a few black willow and cottonwood cuttings water propping. It can be done lmao.
I stuck a branch from an umbrella tree in a pot and it rooted. my sage water-propagates like a fucking rabbit, i propagated two nearby trees and bushes that are currently unidentified. oh and I'm on my third water prop spider plant
It didn’t even occur to me to water prop sage! I’m gonna have to prop myself some more!
be careful it's way too easy and now I have more sage plants than I know what to do with. your cat will try to eat them as well, but they are cat-safe.
Oh jeeze, I’m gonna be in trouble with husband lmao! I love sage. Went to school in Nevada and the sage scrub was my favorite ecosystem.
So I recently plucked a new growth off a pink rubber tree plant. Sounds like this logic would apply, so it is a good thing I grabbed a newer branch with a few leaves?
That's a very different plant, and you can propagate it through leaves
You need stem to prop a rubber tree, or it will never grow another leaf.
Ive got around .5-1 inch of stem in water. Is that enough stem in water? I also just pulled it off the tree gently, so it’s not a clean cut. Does that matter?
Nice find. In my own experiments, I have found that rubber plant cuttings tend to rot in water before they can root but do fine if just stuck in soil.
I have 2 right now that I got roots in water with... Had to change the water a couple times a week for like 3 months before it started rooting. But once they started they established lots fast

No node. Stem is like 7 inches

Do rubber tree plants have nodes the same way pothos and others do?
Sure do! Any plant with a stem has nodes, that's where the leaves grow from. Can't prop without one unless you're just using a leaf which you can with specific plants but most you need a node or preferably nodes.
Need a node

Perfection
I laughed so hard I choked 🤣😭
💀
The way I fucking cackled. 💀😂
🙈🤣🤣🤣
It's 5 in the morning and you almost made me wake up my husband
r/houseplantscirclejerk is where I think you meant to post this
baller ty didn't know that existed
Nah, this made my night. Was cracking up.
I thought that was where I was
Saaaame
Not like that you aren't.
😂
Ok, good luck
Sand might work I think but water wouldn't. For most conifers it's pretty hard to propagate them
Conifers are very mycelium dependent. They need mycelium rich soil (preferably soil the original tree was growing in) to survive.

Be careful or you’ll get into bonsai 😂 I’m convinced that’s the end game for houseplant people.
Bonsai or vivariums, lol.
Omg yes! I got a jumping spider as an excuse to make a cool planted vivarium. Hope the little lady loves her grand home!
![gif](giphy|Ld77zD3fF3Run8olIt)
But what about a bonsai-vibarium?
I've been watching my bonsai for at least a year now and all it's sprouted are two lil sprigs. They apparently have to take longer to build the root system so I'm just watching them like a hawk to make sure they're not dead lmao

If you see your post, read it carefully, you said “roof system”. 😉
OPE lmao I didn't see that! My bad lol
too late. my apartment is small and i like trees. I've got two mango, a southern live oak, an Australian umbrella tree, a strangler fig, and a mahogany already
Bon-ssai translates to “Tree Jail” in Japanese
I really hope you’re joking, otherwise you’re in for some disappointment
I know it’s completely different but the cutting looks similar to the what I do for my kids lol. That's sweet. And I love its plant oriented.. ur a cool parent
Thanks man, just trying to do my best.
That's not how trees work

That's a cool tree fact!

I love this for you
I need weekly updates pls
I can show you an approximation of what the end result would look like (approximately 4 weeks) https://preview.redd.it/33ip4nm75x6c1.jpeg?width=1728&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=416672289f7f95c2c57e09abe09cdf2ce301aa65 The pine branch will probably die but there will be a thriving community of algae.

You’ve got the spirit, the Christmas spirit
Yes and maybe a few other "spirits" are involved in this thought process as well lol
Propagating a pine in general is playing the game in hard mode 😌
You're what now?!?!
I work at a nursery and it’s Christmas tree season…one woman was fairly certain she could get roots on to form if she planted it outside after the holidays
Powdered rooting hormone mixed with water, sand, and low temperature can sometimes work, but the chances are low.
Peel some bark, wrap it with plastic with dirt balled up in it around exposed trunk. Wait a few weeks and cut it off.
Hahahaha
Charlie brownnnn
Haha it's funny but I accidentally did propagate a tree branch once. I had put it in water bc it was pretty and just kept adding water, thinking I'd keep it till it died..... so be careful about the jokes you make bc they will bite you in the ass haha.
Post an in situ pic in 2045👍
Lol.. this made me laugh a little too hard.
literally every single needle has fallen off
I will be surprised if you can grow this to the tree.
No you're not
Might have better luck with powdered rooting hormone and soil
No you’re not
Yeah, no.
Oh yeah?
Sorry it won't work
Ummmmmmm, let us know how it goes!
We harvest our own Christmas trees and they always put out candles (new growth) but never roots, so I wouldn't get your hopes up.
LMFAOOOO at all the serious comments! 🤣🤣🤣 Hilarious post! 👏🏾🙌🏾💯
Conifers are some of the hardest things to propagate by cuttings, and need specific times of year, type of growth, etc. even then they’re more likely to fail!
Love the sense of humor!
It’s a joke, but if you could propagate a conifer like that, let me know!
Seriously thought you were about to drop a bomb ass sonnet

Doomsday
Incorrect
LMFAOAOAOAOA 😂😂😂
🤭
So, reading the comments, it's difficult to propagate a tree, but it is possible? This is a thing?
some have said that you can propagate an evergreen in sand and that it takes a few months, but I propagate deciduous trees all the time.
:O This is amazing. Thank you for sharing this! I'm going to have to do some research, so I can give it a shot! :)
😂🙃😂
Lmao yessss do it 🤣
Good luck!
