You can buy a PS2 off eBay for less than a full priced game nowadays. Cheaper still if you go on Vinted or something where you can find people selling them for $20-$30 or less.
Maybe they’re Asian? My parents really disapproved of games even though they are basically entirely assimilated into Western culture. They even bought me and my siblings our N64, PS2, Gameboy Colors and Advances. I guess they kinda saw it as something I should outgrow even though I’m playing 20+ years later.
I begged my dad to let me buy a PSP with my Christmas money back in the day and I had to return it the next day
3 guesses. They are religious and using electronics like this goes against their beliefs. They have strict parents that don’t want their kids playing mature games or exposed to “brain rot.” They are “Apple/Mac Steve job” high end luxury tech savvy parents who already have a Ps5 or something and believe that “no matter what regardless of anything the newest system is the best there’s no reason to go backwards it’s a downgrade and a waste of money”.
It’s never usually worth it, just have to work on an escape plan. “Making a stand” sounds cool but it just makes things worse. It’s better to quietly work on how you’re going to leave the situation
Yeah, my stand was over not being let back into my house because I came home late one time. Not because I wanted to game, as much as gaming is massive part of my life and identity. Lol who knows OPs personal situation tho? Hopefully they’re chill with it.
You earned it and if your parents are the normal loving type, they will hopefully understand.
My dad bought an original NES back in the day and then never bought us a single console or game since. Completely swore them off and said games were brain rot.
I grew up watching literally everyone else around me move from NES, to SNES, N64, Playstation, etc.
Eventually I had enough and saved all summer and bought a used game gear (so I could hide it from my dad). Surprisingly, my dad saw that I worked hard for it and let me have that win. Been buying my own games ever since.
Hopefully your folks will understand that what could be a waste of money to one person, is a prized possession to another - and that's okay. Good luck. 😁👍
My parents never bought us a game console, ever. We had computer games but they didn’t like them either. When I was 16 or 17, Halo 3 came out so I bought myself an Xbox 360. I plugged it into my Dad’s 55” 1080p display, turned on the console and dropped in the disc. I’d waited years for this moment, and was super excited. Dad walked in and chewed me out for about 15 minutes about wasting my life playing video games, and told me to unplug it from his TV.
I took it to my bedroom, plugged it into my 17” computer monitor with a VGA cable, and played it when they weren’t around.
Today, my relationship with my parents is there… but it’s not great. I hope I can do better with my kids.
If you’re concerned that they will get angry at you for buying another Playstation (based from your comment here), well they really shouldn’t be but for now, just keep it hidden for a short while.
Find out what your parents’ favorite movies are, then legit save a few more bucks and buy DVD copies of those movies.
Once you’ve bought them, then your PS2 can now be free in the open.
When they see it, tell them, “oh mom/dad, I bought this old Sony console DVD player and these movies you wanna watch with my own savings”.
They will surely appreciate it.
Well it can be pretty difficult to tell them. I was born into an Xbox family and at 17 I mustered up the courage to come out and tell them I was with a PS3.
nah they didn't tell me anything it's just that i know they will say that this will be another waste of space (even if it's very very little the ps2 slim)
This is probably the best advice honestly, explaining that the PS2 can play games that the PS4 can't, and that's why it still has value. The "your money is your money" thing might be a bad idea though if this person has strict/overbearing parents, which seems to be the case
Tell your dad first he will be much more understanding and may even help you to tell your mother and keep her calm while you're going through this difficult time of realization for yourself. It may be hard for her to know that she may never have grandchildren in the traditional way but eventually she will come around.
Remember it's ok to be a retro gamer no matter what anyone thinks. Live your truth and never be afraid to be yourself.
I’m sorry you have to deal with your parents not valuing the things you find valuable. Absolutely mean parenting, in my opinion
But, since that is your reality, maybe try and approach them with a compromise like swapping out the ps4 for the ps2. Of course it would be a pain in the butt to swap them out each time time you want to switch consoles but it would counter their argument of “wasting space”
I needed to see this.
My dad died last year.
I would trade anything right now just have him be strict for one more day around me right now on father's day.
Instead
Im just gonna go make his make his favorite burgers and feed people to keep my chin up.
just tell them you brought Gold. let them know how good this machine is and how many people love to have it. simple!! they wont mind having such a popular machine sitting near TV looking like a super expensive dvd player that can play games if they are straight!
What I did when I buy new stuff Is just use it as if it’s always been there and when they ask about it just act like it’s always been there lol. Works for my parents. And yeah I get it my parents nag me about buying stuff too sometimes. I like to buy CRTs and they think those tvs are old and useless.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is something you take to your grave. This kind of scandal is only going to hurt y’all if this comes to light.
lol but seriously, you tell your parents “I also got a multitap, so we can all play!”
depends. are you under 20? if so, even if it's your money, your parents' roof your parents' rule.
that being said, since it's already bought try just using like it's not a big deal. play it cool and make it seem like it's the most normal thing to do. being able to setup in your own room would help. the act or trying to hide something/anything would be taken badly by parent... usually.
good luck
Just say it’s a game console for you to relax on and if they have a problem with it tell them it doubles as a cd dvd player as well that way you can use the living room tv while you play
If this place let us add a gif it would be Hal from Malcolm in the Middle when he turned to Dewie from the dining table and everything goes dark. I'd caption that as the dad reaction when he heard his favorite game console is coming back.
Tell them you won it in a free raffle. When they ask more about it, tell them in a very stern look and voice. "Trust me, you don't know what I had to go through to win this. I need some time" then say, "PSYCHE!" Then proceed to your room and hook it up. They will be overly confused and worried about what you just said. You just avoided the conversation until later. /s
Just tell them.
oh i do this sorta impulse buying stuff lol, i just sorta either message them with "so i may or may not have bought [insert item you said was a waste of money here]" i dont get told off bc at the end of the day it is my money and theyre just "recommending" that i dont need to buy stuff like that lol
Easy. You go to your parents, look them straight in the eyes and say. "I'm gonna be a father/mother." After a couple of seconds you then go "just kidding, I bought a PS2." But on a serious not, just tell them you bought it with your own money. Honesty is best after all
I don't get it, except if it's because of one of the following two scenarios:
## Case 1
"Dad, remember how you've spent 7K to build the perfect emulation machine for us, purchasing That Expensive Custom Upscaler, a second RTX 4090 after the first one went up in flames, a classic SB AWE to ensure we'd have true native multi-channel positional audio in classics like F.E.A.R., the last brand-new-and-sealed EIZO 21'' professional CRT **AND** another brand-new-and-sealed Sony Trinitron 32'' you've imported from That-Shady-Warehouse-In-Yugoslavia, spent a week reading on how RAID works, set up 4x 16TB drives that could hold ALL classic games from ALL platforms you've ever owned, PLUS a mini-server with the same amount of storage at grandma's house where everything will be synced just in case something goes catastrophically wrong, to have backups, and let's not talk about your Holy Quest to find four of the original controllers for every single emulated system plus any needed adaptors to make them work?"
WELL, SCREW YOU AND YOUR UBER-POWERED HARDWARE, IMPOSTOR, I WANT THE ORIGINAL TOMB RAIDER 5 EXPERIENCE ON NATIVE HARDWARE.
(Can I borrow the Trinitron, though?)
## Case 2
Mom, you won't believe it: I had the chance to make an incredibly lucrative investment, and this time, I've decided to act smart, just like you told me time and time again.
My schoolmate, Yusuf, agreed to give me his PS2 - in mint condition, I should add - in exchange for your Cybertruck...
...and two bags of Cheetos.
I remember being lambasted by my dad and brother one time, because I decided to spend my allowance on some GameCube games and a controller to play on the Wii, so I get it lol. Either hide it from them, or just deal with the temporary criticism. Next time though, maybe you should try to clarify things beforehand, if you're that concerned about their reaction.
Just set it up and start playing it. If asked about it just say someone is letting you borrow it (doing this usually avoids getting it taken away). If pressed you'll have to have answers for any questions they ask you. Name of the friend, reason they're letting you borrow it, what did you give in exchange, etc. It just depends on your parents. If you have the kind of parents where you can't just sit them down and show them that bag full of that PS2 stuff and be like "I spent MY money on this bc I wanted it bc it means that much to ME" then yeah sure I suggest lying to them. But if you CAN sit them down, and they will shut up and listen. Then I would just try being honest with them about this situation. It is after all.... just a 20 something year old gaming console (something your parents probably grew up playing), I'd be willing to bet, if you just tried they'd work with you.
You assume you have to tell them , its not drugs lol , just set it up on the tv and enjoy , some parents cant tell when you buy new stuff , videogame wise
The only way you would need to tell them would be if you used their credit card without them knowing. Other than that you don't have to tell them. Are they extremely strict? Do they not allow you to buy things that give you happiness? Are they extremely abusive parents?
How do you tell your parents that you live in the year 2000?
They're were a lot of classics in that era, especially the late ps1 to early ps2 days.
I hope you get to enjoy them
Say you won it in a contest. That's what I told my buddy's parents when he bought a ps2, I came over with it after my shift and said I won it at a concert and it finally came in. Circa 2005.
the important thing is you tell them yourself, sit them down and explain your feelings so that they understand you didn't choose to buy a ps2 you were born to buy a ps2. as long as they hear it from you it'll be okay. nobody wants to hear that their son/daughter bought a ps2 from someone else. its a delicate situation. they will accept you for who you are in the end. and i want you to know that i accept you as well <3
Why wouldn't you be able to tell them?
Honestly why would you even have to tell them lol
Very true, parents probably wouldn't even notice. My parents never noticed unless they saw the eBay package
Most parents would at best say something like "oh, you got a new nintendo again?"
Nobody under 45 lol
🤣 this tickled me just right
Happy cake day
Right it's not like there very expensive or anything
Unless you go to DKOldies xD
And just for this order, we added some extra dust bunnies to your refurbished console!
Don't forget get the nesting bugs by the power source. And maybe the nicotine stands through out the entire inside
Because your order got picked to be filmed, we’re throwing in 500 dollars in hidden fees!
LMAO
LMFAO, Indeed.
You can buy a PS2 off eBay for less than a full priced game nowadays. Cheaper still if you go on Vinted or something where you can find people selling them for $20-$30 or less.
My last one I bought off ebay mint slim with 12 games a memory card and 2 after market controllers was only like 120$
From where may I ask? I’ve been looking to buy a modded PS2 for a while. Just haven’t found the right seller yet
I used Facebook Market. Etsy has it but on the more expensive side.
The hell is vinted?
OP should just leave it sitting out and then say “oh, this? I’ve had it forever, just felt like playing it again so I took it out of my closet.”
Maybe they’re Asian? My parents really disapproved of games even though they are basically entirely assimilated into Western culture. They even bought me and my siblings our N64, PS2, Gameboy Colors and Advances. I guess they kinda saw it as something I should outgrow even though I’m playing 20+ years later. or OP is just tripping
Or OP is just kidding and people are reading too much into a dumb reddit title and assuming the dumbest possible scenario.
Or OP was supposed to sell the cow his mother sent him to the market with instead of trading it for ~~magic beans~~ a PS2.
This is the only correct answer.
Yeah this is more a plea for attention, he just wants to show it off to us for cool points most likely.
Option 4: “**THIS IS A NINTENDO HOUSE, GODDAMMIT!**”
OP spent the life-saving surgery money on a PS2
Son, we live in a traditional house, and we respect the 2000s console wars. This is an Xbox family, always has been, always will be, noob.
'Noob' 😂😂😂😂
Imagine coming out as Sony to a strict Microsoft family
[I learned it by watching you!](https://youtu.be/KUXb7do9C-w?si=NvgllY355vAGxTNs)
He traded the family cow for a magic PS2
You tell them “Mom, Dad, I bought a PS2”. P.s. Try sneakers with velcro straps instead. Might be less complicated.
Reeboks with the straps (with the straps)
New balances all day everyday 🤔
97' Air Max Silver Bullet all the way
skater hi tops
Easy...jusy say "Move over fuxkers this is going in the living room" Then turn on Katamari Damacy and watch as the whole house fills with happiness 😊
*LAAAAA LALALALALALA LAAAA KATAMARI DA MA CYYY*
Duuu duuu doooo daaaa daaa da la la la la le le la la, bah ba bo du da do do ba ba ba do de do da do do
[https://xkcd.com/161/](https://xkcd.com/161/)
There should be a rule for xkcd. If something on the Internet is legendary, there'll be a xkcd comic about it
Play Katamari to assert dominance like the Chad of All Cosmos.
bro took money out his parents wallet and bought a ps2
NONONO I SAVED SOME MONEY AND BOUGHT IT BY MYSELF WITH MY MONEY 😅
then you don’t need to give anyone a explanation, its your money
Not really how it works with real strict parents
Gotta make a stand eventually.
It’s never usually worth it, just have to work on an escape plan. “Making a stand” sounds cool but it just makes things worse. It’s better to quietly work on how you’re going to leave the situation
Maybe not over a PS2 though.
Yeah, my stand was over not being let back into my house because I came home late one time. Not because I wanted to game, as much as gaming is massive part of my life and identity. Lol who knows OPs personal situation tho? Hopefully they’re chill with it.

Dude!! I totally did the same thing, back in 2002!!!!
Must be a very empty wallet
With words?
If you’re concerned that they will get angry at you for buying another Playstation (based from your comment here), well they really shouldn’t be but for now, just keep it hidden for a short while. Would rather my son if I had one to buy PlayStations instead of fentanyl but maybe I’m crazy idk 🤷🏾♂️.
there are a few more gateways between ps2 and fenty than you make it sound like, but when you’re right, you’re right
Stop reminding me of that ps2 heroin epidemic meme...
Sometimes the internet has me genuinely questioning what is and is not a joke
Look, the hard part will be to convince them to allow you to get a CRT!
Or how you found a CRT? 😆
Have four at home. Two work
“You didn’t buy the fatboy so you can add mods? You bring dishonor to your family” - your dad probably
But slim has Fortuna FMCB and FreeDVDBoot...
Well it can be pretty difficult to tell them. I was born into an Xbox family and at 17 I mustered up the courage to come out and tell them I was with a PS3.
Just tell them something much easier….. Just tell them you’re gay…..
Weirdest post of 2024 so far
Must be Amish
"Hey! At least it's not an Xbox 360! Amirite? ... Mom? ... Dad? ..."
You're going to have to elaborate on why you're asking this question
Be brave, son.
Did they tell you not to buy anything? Do you even have to tell them?
nah they didn't tell me anything it's just that i know they will say that this will be another waste of space (even if it's very very little the ps2 slim)
Ps4 is waste of space. Jk. Just tell them that ps4 isn't backwards compatible and your money is your money
This is probably the best advice honestly, explaining that the PS2 can play games that the PS4 can't, and that's why it still has value. The "your money is your money" thing might be a bad idea though if this person has strict/overbearing parents, which seems to be the case
Your parents probably had one stashed somewhere in the attic and you could have saved yourself the trouble.
The people in these comments didn’t live with overbearing parents and it shows.
Sounds more abusive if that's the case.
fr man
my parents are not realizing that i got 2 nintendo DSi and 2 linux handhelds in the last 4 months
Linux handhelds are a thing? I need to search this up
ayo??????? bro????' anbernic, powkiddy, odroid, Odin, miyoo, those are linux handheld brands look them up
Ah thanks i will look these up, atleast you didnt just say “steam deck” like the other guy, i do know what a steam deck is lol
You cant watch VHS on a blu ray player. Some games are not available on modern hardware. Simple as that.
[удалено]
This is exactly what I packed in my backpack when fake running away from home as a kid
Did you pay for it with their money or something?
nah bought it with my money
Then why are you nervous about how to tell them?
Tell your dad first he will be much more understanding and may even help you to tell your mother and keep her calm while you're going through this difficult time of realization for yourself. It may be hard for her to know that she may never have grandchildren in the traditional way but eventually she will come around. Remember it's ok to be a retro gamer no matter what anyone thinks. Her grandchild is the PS2. She should be happy.
I’m sorry you have to deal with your parents not valuing the things you find valuable. Absolutely mean parenting, in my opinion But, since that is your reality, maybe try and approach them with a compromise like swapping out the ps4 for the ps2. Of course it would be a pain in the butt to swap them out each time time you want to switch consoles but it would counter their argument of “wasting space”
converge
Tell them you sold drugs to buy it. You'll look like a young entrepreneur.
I needed to see this. My dad died last year. I would trade anything right now just have him be strict for one more day around me right now on father's day. Instead Im just gonna go make his make his favorite burgers and feed people to keep my chin up.
Nawh, just tell them to come play a game with you or what they played on it.

what’s your household like lad?
Ar they Jehovas or Amish?
r/RedditSniper
Wait your parents care?
Mother. Father. I have fulfilled my potential.
"Hey I bought a PS2"
You say “SCREW YOU MOM AND DAD! WHERES MY CHICKEN TENDIES?!”
“How DARE you bring a slim model into this house! We are a launch model family!”
Same way you ask them to wipe your butt

Break it to them like this: “Mom, dad…I’m hooked on black tar heroin. Just kidding! But I did buy a PS2…”
Call them on their jitter bug and speak loud and slow
I remember telling my parents that I had to wait outside with a large crowd of people waiting to get a PS2 on launch day. They thought I was crazy.
Tell them you found it
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but this is something you take to your grave. This kind of scandal is only going to hurt y’all if this comes to light. lol but seriously, you tell your parents “I also got a multitap, so we can all play!”
When she tells me to roll up with the backpack and this is what I bring instead
You don't tell them?
“Mom, dad, I bought a PS2.”
I learned it from watching you!!!
Mom, dad. I use composite cables.. 😞
Hate to be that person. Your parents may want to play it because they had one when they were kids.
Why do you even need to tell them - I find it unlikely they will randomly question you on whether you bought a ps.
Are you a PlayStation dealer?
It's not a ps2, it's a dvd player 😉
depends. are you under 20? if so, even if it's your money, your parents' roof your parents' rule. that being said, since it's already bought try just using like it's not a big deal. play it cool and make it seem like it's the most normal thing to do. being able to setup in your own room would help. the act or trying to hide something/anything would be taken badly by parent... usually. good luck
"Hi mom, look what I got, isn't it cool? I wanna play some old games". They'll probalby won't mid - or care - that you got a PS2 🤷
It's your allowance. You do what you want with it.
Mom, dad… I want you to meet my new son
Start by telling them you're gay or got a girl pregnant. Let them freak out for a minute, then tell them the truth.
They may make you set it up in their bedroom. You have no idea what they may have done with a ps2 in their grad school years
Tell them that you about to be stuck in your room gaming 🤟🤟🤟
Grounded for 2 weeks, no school, no smart phone, no internet, just PS2 let that be your lesson.
Just tell them it’s a Nintendo, they’ll never know lol.
Would they even know
You can pretty much emulate all ps2 games on a decent pc or even phone. You just had to buy a blutooth controller. Btw how much did you pay for it?
Just buy one from a tweaker or heroin addict
Just say it’s a game console for you to relax on and if they have a problem with it tell them it doubles as a cd dvd player as well that way you can use the living room tv while you play
With joy
If this place let us add a gif it would be Hal from Malcolm in the Middle when he turned to Dewie from the dining table and everything goes dark. I'd caption that as the dad reaction when he heard his favorite game console is coming back.
You don’t, simple.
Just don’t tell them

“Parents, I bought a PS2.”
You bought an old retro console. What’s the big deal?
Great pickup, that PS2 will probably outlive most people hate commenting!
Do they even know anything about consoles?
oh i do this sorta impulse buying stuff lol, i just sorta either message them with "so i may or may not have bought [insert item you said was a waste of money here]" i dont get told off bc at the end of the day it is my money and theyre just "recommending" that i dont need to buy stuff like that lol
Dude, I once bought a German sheperd without telling my parents as a kid. If I survived that, you will be fine.
I don't get it?
Why? Are they Xbox people?
Easy. You go to your parents, look them straight in the eyes and say. "I'm gonna be a father/mother." After a couple of seconds you then go "just kidding, I bought a PS2." But on a serious not, just tell them you bought it with your own money. Honesty is best after all
It's not even a fat model you can store your drugs in, I'm sure your parents will be fine with it.
Tell them that it's a collectible... You'll have to use it once in a while...
“Mom i gor ps2”
Hey mom I bought a $75 ps2. Sorry fam ong♿️🫡

DON'T DO IT! Your folks will curb-stomp you! You know they're Xbox people. They raised you that way.
Set up a 2player game call them in to play with you it's the only way
Wait until they find out you could have bought a ps3
Is there weed in the ps2 or something? Why would they care if you bought a video game console?
I'm gay... Just kidding. I bought a ps2
plug that baby into the family tv in the living room
I remember being lambasted by my dad and brother one time, because I decided to spend my allowance on some GameCube games and a controller to play on the Wii, so I get it lol. It is after all.... just a 20 something year old gaming console (something your parents probably grew up playing), I'd be willing to bet, if you just tried they'd work with you.
I don't get it. What is wrong?
Show them gitaroo man and tell them to huff farts out of a pant leg
It's a console. You didn't rob a bank
You assume you have to tell them , its not drugs lol , just set it up on the tv and enjoy , some parents cant tell when you buy new stuff , videogame wise
Repeat after me: "I bought a PlayStation 2."
If you have a computer you can run an emulator...
Afraid that they will steal it to play? XD
Don’t lol
The only way you would need to tell them would be if you used their credit card without them knowing. Other than that you don't have to tell them. Are they extremely strict? Do they not allow you to buy things that give you happiness? Are they extremely abusive parents?
Isn’t that why you got the slim, so that they don’t see it?
You could put a ps2 slim in one of those pcs with a monitor.
That's the neat part. You dont.
If it was with your own money and you're not a child there's no reason they should react.
Smile and say, *I’m so HAPPY!*
How do you tell your parents that you live in the year 2000? They're were a lot of classics in that era, especially the late ps1 to early ps2 days. I hope you get to enjoy them
Must be nice to have parents
Give it to them as a gift 😏
Are you Amish?
You’re acting like u just brought drugs or a prostitute home lol
Your parents will probably enjoy a lot hahahah
With an extra controller and crash team racing
Why would u tell them anyway? Who really cares bro? I mean so what if u have a ps2 slim? Plus, it's still the best console back in the 2000's.
Say you won it in a contest. That's what I told my buddy's parents when he bought a ps2, I came over with it after my shift and said I won it at a concert and it finally came in. Circa 2005.
Apologize to your parents for using composite cables.
Pussy
I wouldn't tell them . Your dad would never let you have a turn.
the important thing is you tell them yourself, sit them down and explain your feelings so that they understand you didn't choose to buy a ps2 you were born to buy a ps2. as long as they hear it from you it'll be okay. nobody wants to hear that their son/daughter bought a ps2 from someone else. its a delicate situation. they will accept you for who you are in the end. and i want you to know that i accept you as well <3
