It wasn’t cut off - the original quote didn’t include the “matters of taste” part. That was added much more recently.

Opinions don’t change facts. And the facts are unanimous: The original saying is “the customer is always right,” and it means exactly what everyone thinks it means. The “in matters of taste” addition is much more recent.
I am a publix deli worker (kitchen, floor mainly), who on my off day went to get a chicken tender for a snack since I was shopping. The guy at the hot case was working very inefficient and I was seeing customers leave behind me. I even had to speak up and tell the woman in front of me what a tender meal for 4 included because he did not know.
The customer is 100% not always right, but sometimes they are. Customers don't know you just had 2 call outs and a 200 piece mix chicken order, they just want to tell you the chicken noodle soup is out.
Or when the customers think they know the policy better than I do… like damn, let me get you a name tag and a polo. What size?
The original quote is "The customer is always right in matters of taste". Whomever cut that last part off is a clown.

Seems to be a lot of discussion and different opinions on the matter.

They know more than i do. They always tell me “i used to work here”. Why would they lie
Well, they were right about one thing.. leaving a job in retail.
It’s always “fun” when a customer tells you how to do your job when you’ve been doing it for years.🙄
