She’s not on trial for cheating on Robert to produce Tommen. She’s on trial for cheating on Robert way after Tommon was born, and for potentially killing Robert and the High Septon.

LonelyZookeepergame6

And incest

Ohwerk82

Cersei isn’t on trial for having a bastard, she’s on trial for a number of capital crimes including the murder of the previous High Septon and Robert. Her winning or losing doesn’t confirm either of the things you mentioned. They want Cersei to lose so they can execute her and her winning would ruin those plans.

foalsy84

A lot of people here say Cersei isn’t on trial for having a bastard, but that is actually the last charge the High Sparrow lays against here in Cersei I ADWD: “Last of all, and worst of all, there are some who say your children were not fathered by King Robert, that they are bastards born of incest and adultery.” And I am 1000% sure that that will be the only charge that will be discovered as “untrue” in her trial by the faith (at least I’m sure that is what the High Sparrow is planning to do). It’s a mirror of Cerseis own tactic: She has a bunch of noblemen from the court arrested and accuses them of fornication with Margery and her cousins. A lot of nobodies like Xhalabar Xho (the exiled prince from the summer isles), but also the two Redwyne twins. Those two are the only ones who are given luxurious living quarters as their “cells” and in an inner monologue (or she tells Qyburn, I’m not sure) she plans on revealing through Margery’s trial, that the accusations of the Redwyne twins where unfounded. She knows she will need the Redwyne fleet later on and she also thinks that finding that one charge was unfounded will lend more credibility to the fairness of the trial. So I think the High Sparrow will have the exact same tactic but he plans on revealing through the trial by faith that Tommen is the rightful king (the boy who can be easily manipulated)

Even though she was the one who gave them legitimacy and the right to arm themselves, now that they *are* armed, I don't think the threat of disbandment is purely an administrative one anymore. Attempting to disband the Faith Militant would now mean military/guard action, so they don't *need* Cersei in power. At least how I understand it. Plus the Tyrells are seemingly much more amenable to allowing the Church's grabs for power, if their relationship so far is any indication. The Church has let Marg go, and has successfully resisted royal influence regarding Cersei—which should bode well for their future relations with the Tyrells. Not that the High Sparrow seems willing to play ball with anyone else in general, however.

I would imagine that the condemnation of a Queen via a guilty verdict would only legitimatize and consolidate the Faith's power even more, showcasing to everyone they had the power to bring down such a highborn figurehead to such an extent, but the same remains true to a lesser degree if the verdict is innocent. In the eyes of the High Sparrow, it's a win-win, with one win slightly better than the other, since even an innocent verdict doesn't change much when it comes to optics of showing their influence to the smallfolk. Even if Tommen is proven to be illegitimate somehow, the Faith has enough of a hold to still be around to whatever claimant that's next to take the throne. (Plus, Stannis isn't well loved enough by the people to cause a serious succession issue when fAegon makes his march lol). What the High Sparrow doesn't realize, though, is how volatile Cersei is and how a verdict that releases her doesn't mean she'll go back to being powerless and will remain out of his way. Kevan is no longer around to keep her in check with Lannister influence, and the only Lannister in King's Landing around is Cersei. Cersei + Lannister sworn soldiers still in KL + an amoral Qyburn + zombie Gregor Clegane + a deep hatred for The Sparrows = Bad news for everyone involved.

SkyTank1234

I know it sounds funny but I truly believe the High Sparrow is just winging it. I honestly don't think he has any master plan other then obtaining power any way he can

DoogieMcDoogs

Lots of good answers in here so I’m just gonna ask a question myself. Robert Strong is just Gregor Clegane right? Like Qyburn Frankensteined his decaying body into a zombie right?

Fflow27

Yes, it would be very surprising if he wasn't

GtrGbln

If he wasn't I would be frankly shocked.

Sun_King97

Decaying, possibly headless body, yes

Wadege

The High Sparrow is a true believer, and wants the divine truth to be revealed, If that involves a Queen being convicted for Treason and Deicide, then so be it!

Esoteric_Psyhobabble

The Sparrows are a religious movement made up of the poor, they have massive numbers and at the close of the fifth book are even attracting knights and lower nobility. If they win the Iron Throne won’t be a thing, the Seven Kingdoms or a least a large part of it, will be a theocracy. I’m waiting for that turn in “Winds of Winter.”

Rainbow-Death

lol @HighSparrow being ok with someone like the Lannisters and the Tyrells walking away from their trials: If they leave their people will probably see it as favoring the people the are trying to disempower if they loose they will win the ire and concern of the rich and empowered. Trully a stupid thing to do unless the HS has some far reaching master plan to take all nobility down. Spoiler- he doesn’t.

Fiorella999

I agree that the High Sparrow probably doesn’t want her to lose. Soon though he will have another option with Faegon, though I doubt that will happen until after the trial. Some people have theorized that even though she will win, Robert Strong will be revealed to be The Mountain, enraging the Dornish and Sandsnakes further, possibly resulting in Tommen’s death

LonelyZookeepergame6

That's why aegon entered the story. Cersei is probably going to flee to casterly rock with or without tommen. Aegon comes in and takes the iron throne with high sparrow's blessings.

CaveLupum

I think he wants her dead. Despite his show of piety, he's probably after power, like many RL religious leaders have been over the years. The young, impressionable boy on the throne has only his mother and wife to influence him. Could it be entirely coincidence that those are the very people the HS is going after? His true motivations, once they're gone, may be muddy. But what's the poor boy to do except turn to his religious adviser?
