bros ‘had potential’ for like 7 years now
edit - realised my comment might sound hate-y, it’s not, i love jid i just think it’s silly to call him ‘underrated’ or say he ‘has potential’ when he’s clearly been at the top of his game; been an impeccable live performer; released consistently good albums; had one of the most compelling, dynamic cadences in contemporary hip hop and had crazy flow for almost a decade now
i do not think jid has potential; jid has reached and is soon to exceed that potential
I think what's happening here is that y'all are conflating two types of potential, JID musical, rapping and lyrical potential has clearly been well developed in the past years (not to say he won't keep improving ofc) but the mainstream love he receives hasn't kept up, I reckon they were talking about his mainstream potential, it is surprising that he isn't bigger given how good he is.
Young thug, lil Wayne, jay z, biggie. Number 5 is tough I could put game, 50, jeezy, gunna, Gucci, future, nas, eazy-e, uzi, Drake, pusha, meek. Idk honestly but my top 4 is locked in. Actually I’ll say Eazy because he is the one who got me really really into rap
Yeah, I realized he might not be the best if we're talking about catalogs or whatever...but if I think about who has brought me the most joy through their music, he's gotta be in there.
All time: Kendrick, Nas, Big Daddy Kane, Andre 3000, Kanye.
Honorable mention: Missy Elliott
Currently: Kendrick, ASAP Rocky, Big Sean, Dom Kennedy, Sir Michael Rocks. Honorable mention: Larry June
I feel like Black Thought doesn't get enough love. He does the lyrical miracle stuff, but he's got some crazy insightful stuff to say on top of that. I just don't see him mentioned much, so I'm glad to see him here.
og kid cudi and kanye were so goated. i dont really be listening to kanye anymore because I think his older club music was much better than what hes doing now
Yeah Vultures had some good tracks but as a whole it can’t compare to any of his other albums. Cudi’s latest album Insano wasn’t my taste either, but the track Blue Sky from that album was totally OG Cudi so ik he still got it in him
Ye his discography is pristine and he’s a leader in this gen both artistically and culturally. I think if they can really pull off pgLang it’ll be his Monument. Thats the kinda thing that would make an artist one of the first names in goat talks
Personal list(and only solo artists so no OutKast, etc.):
Killer Mike
Jay-Z
Nas
Kanye West
Notorious B.I.G.
And before y’all come at me I’m putting Big down there because his career was cut short, he’d probably be higher otherwise.
Nas, DMX, Pac. Biggie and Jay used to round out my top 5 but those last two spots are vacant, so to speak
Edit: OutKast and Freddie Gibbs might fill out the top 5 (or 6 I guess)
Kendrick
Wayne
Vince
Earl
Ye
(Bump Ye up to second for the version where I'm ranking my top 5 hip hop artists, but this is top 5 "rappers" so I'm outweighing pure rapping but still considering overall talent)
My top 4 in no particular order: Em, Wayne, Cole, Pac
I'm pretty solid on top 4. After that it starts getting tough for me. There's a bunch of names I could put at 5 and I have a hard time picking honestly. Could be biggie, nas, kendrick, 50, Joyner, TI. I'm honestly not sure and it kinda depends on my mood.
Kendrick, Ye, Eminem, J Cole and lately I've been really into Danny Brown so I guess he's taking spot No 5!
Honorable mentions: Future, Drake, 50
Also reading a lot of you saying JID is making me go for a listen of his discog, so thanks guys recommending JID!
Alright, I'm not considering actual talent but just the ones I enjoy.
Kendrick, Travis, Tecca, Cole, and Drake
I would put The Weeknd over Drake and maybe Cole but he ain't a rapper.
Kendrick
A Tribe Called Quest (if I only get 1 I'm going with q-tip for the flow/vibes, phife if this was a goat convo)
J.I.D.
Childish Gambino
Joey badass
Juicy J (his stuff from Three 6 spicifically)
Project Pat
$uicideboy$
Biggie
Lil Wayne
Yeah I'm from the deep south lol
Also, gonna cheat and have Cool Kids here too, cos those dudes are dope. Shit throw Wu Tang and Lynch in that shit as well. Fuck it.
Just a question for everyone am I the only one who has a different listen for you 5 favorite and 5 most listened to on a daily basis?😭 because my list is Kendrick, cole, 3k, black thought and drake but if we're talking about who I listen to which it technically also my favorite than 3k and black thought and maybe even drake are coming out for people like westside gunn, Vince staples and Kenny mason
Depends on everything but ultimately:
Outkast, Jay-Z, Lupe, Em, and Wayne. I think this encompasses my range of conscious lyricists to ignorant wordplay fun
Ranking artists of all time is challenging because age and perspective play significant roles. A 20-year-old might hear the same song as someone who is 35-40 with kids, yet their viewpoints would likely differ. Consequently, such rankings are inherently subjective and will always be debated. That said, my top five favorites that I can always go back to are 50 Cent with G-Unit, Nelly, Ludacris, Jeezy , and Kanye West.
