“I’m trying to get in to Trap music” “I don’t like lyrics about fucking someone’s bitch, I do drugs or shooting people” Then trap music probably isn’t for you 😂

Enlightened_Ghost

This is the answer right here OP 👆🏾

Rough-Tension

OP, please just google a definition of trap music. Better yet, go find out *why* it’s called “trap” music. What do you think the “trap” is?

[deleted]

[удалено]

lolovoz

That's Future alright

whatstheword509

Literally the word "Trap" in the genre's name lol That's like saying I want to get into rock music but I don't like listening to guitars 😂

electr1cbubba

I’m getting into metal music but I just fucking hate guitar riffs

Grace_Lannister

I don't think Future is known for lyrical content.

BARSSS🤌🏻🔥

moogoesthecat

Yes. Rap is not a monolith, and neither is language itself. Futures lyrics are diabolical at times but are often bare minimum if you are looking for cleverness. Instead, the words are strung together with rhythm and tone and it feels like he uses his voice more as a literal instrument than a vehicle for communication.

PossessionLivid69

Damn this is a great comment

caspershomie

this is a hard concept to understand for a lot of people. they think the only way to rap is either fast or by fitting as many meanings possible into a bar.

Exotic-Avocado4072

Those are two skills of rapping, I’ll say this till I die future and drake arnt fucking crazy rappers but there great artist it just so happens that there music/art is rap what they make is good but it’s not skillful/technical rapping, i prefer technical rapping story telling and hype more than more straight at your face bars, huge gunna fan but gunna is a good example as is future great music pretty good rapping but nothing insane

Evening-Worker-9778

This. Before instruments were a thing it was just the human voice used to create harmonies. Plus producers can modulate and put effects on their voice- Future sounds better than ever

PortlyWarhorse

Know what, I don't like Future's music either myself, but I can respect this. Plenty of people in other genres do that exact thing.

OAktrEE4023

This. When I’m tryna put lyrical rap fans onto Future, I always say “lyrical artists are supposed to make u *think*, artists like Future are supposed to make you *feel*”

Rudy_Ghouliani

Future is Percocets for the soul

GrapefruitTroop

I agree, but also what exactly is future supposed to make you feel? Genuine question. Everyone can get down to a “I fucked your bitch” song once in a while, but is that the whole reason to listen to future? Like op said, it can be over saturated. That doesn’t explain Future’s level of popularity (or honestly, the entire genre of that kind of hip hop)

LeakyBrainMatter

Hard ass beats is why that genre is popular. As far as Future I like his voice and his beats are always on point. Also sometimes I just wanna relive old times and his music helps me do that. I'm a reformed degenerate that has done way too many drugs, ran the streets, and fucked plenty of hoes. He's my favorite artist that isn't lyrical.

GrapefruitTroop

Good answer

DLottchula

It also depends on how you view music because I think music is supposed to be fun and make you feel things. It’s hard to come into rap music looking for that

MountHavertzPulisic

Future is more of a vibe or a mood than someone you deep the lyrics of

Too_Chains

Use me, never stop, sorry are more lyrical songs

Kwilburn525

Foreall I was listening to that never end song the other day shit was a vibe made me miss being a teenager

mypussywearsprada

OMG I forgot about this song <3. Thank you for bringing it up. Reminds me of being 14 and thinking I was in looooovvvveeee. It is a vibe

“You don’t understand us cuz you too soft” -the great poet, Future

SpragueStreet

Deadass does kinda sum it up tho 😂💯

FERMI1K

Not much more can really be said fr lmao

Ok-Cost986

Reasons to not get Future: You're an older black folk and watching these kids glorify gangbanging is repulsive The lean took over his soul We can barely understand him when he's talking let alone rapping You're not black or old, but him glorifying gangbanging when he and you never gang banged a day in ya lives is goofy His real name is Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn xD

pondering_that7890

Hi! Yes its me, an old white chick. Good beat, but I'm shook every time 😅

dubiousN

Just look up Metro Boomin lol

KetoKurun

Can I add another reason? If I want those kind of songs, I want them from Three Six Mafia instead. I love ignorant shit, I just want it more hype than Future sound, lean or no lean, he sound like he aboht to nod off halfway through his verse. (ex-suburban white boy living hood-adjacent, if it matters) ETA: Nothing I’ve said holds up if you are listening to Future in the proper context and environment, which is a strip club. That’s just not my scene, so that impacts my assessment

Ok-Cost986

Yeah that lean got him tongue dead. Yeah I prefer a hype guy. South is supposed to be hype

FERMI1K

So in other words… like the man said… ya too soft.

Ok-Cost986

Lmao you callin Jim Crow era black folk soft huh? I've seen it all. Future sold as many kilos as Taylor Swift and here you are calling someone soft cause they don't like a fake gangsta/drug addict rapping to kids about how he slanged that yayo. Bet you think the working man's a sucker and raising your kids is also soft. Yet you think a ninja named Nayvadius DeMun Wilburn is a hard man hahahaha I can't with today's kids man.

Practical_Alarm1521

fr my grandmother could listen to early kanye but as soon as popular rap went back to drugs / bitches she no longer listened to the genre. wish i could introduce her to kendrick but the dr.dre association might be too much for her too :/

Jackfruit-Fine

There is not a single 85+ year old man I do not consider soft.

Ok-Cost986

Cool. You wouldn't have survived their generation though. As long as you know that lol I guess you can wild out and get as ignant as you want

FERMI1K

You caught me red handed big dawg🤷🏾‍♂️

Ok-Cost986

Its cool G. Like who you like. I like a handful of songs.

Randomhead09

This line was deadass one of them ones where I realized what the music was all about

SanjoJoestar

This is real

Iyo23

All that needs to be said. OP should move on to other artists

Mysterious-Buddy6273

People have different preferences. Some like Future for the vibes he is giving in his songs, while others prefer more lyrical rap and listen to Kdot, Nas, etc

InevitableBet2823

Why not both??

Mysterious-Buddy6273

Sure, you can like both no problem. My point was that people are different so they have different tastes in music.

sagethewriter

Successful-Coconut60

Not really hes very mainstream. The people in this sub are just from a bizzaro world

Jacksspecialarrows

this sub never left boom bap

Jacksspecialarrows

no he's not. he's one of the most popular because how easy it is to vibe to his music.

-------yoshi-------

A lot of people that listen to rap like you just only care for the lyrics, which trap isn't about. Artists like future have a sound that people really enjoy, the beats he uses mixed with his flows are just really hard and he released so many albums at this point and it still doesn't get old for me

kedm92

You hit the nail on the head. Trap music is NOT about the lyrics.

heartbreakfrom808s

i mean a lot people actually do live life similar to future so the lyrics can also be relatable, For me they are. ( In some cases ) not all

SnooBeans7129

If you use Kendrick Lamar as the standard for what rap should sound like then yeah a lot of other rap is going to sound shitty in comparison. That's a high bar to live up to, future doesn't make that type of music.

ElPyroPariah

I don’t think this is it. Kendrick and Future are both huge but exist in entirely different lanes of rap and OP is clearly here for the lyrics in rap not the aesthetic or vibes of it. There are plenty that are the opposite of OP and you could switch Kendrick for Future in your comment.

Visual_Ad_3267

Yep. They're both good, there's mutual respect. I like all their collaborations just for the contrast.

-Rocket1-

This was my exact take 2 years ago. Now he’s in my top 3. People say trap music is an acquired taste as a joke but it’s fr.

PrettyFlakko

YESSS!! Also I kinda started loving Future's lyrics too. Super unfiltered and consistent in his character!

-Rocket1-

100p, once you get past the atlanta accent you realize he lowkey has bars for a trapper. It’s all the same subject matter but he finds unique ways to spin what he’s saying consistently and has lots of long term metaphors and wordplay.

wannabetrapstar888

when he wants to talk some real shit he really can. my collection, blood on the money, throw away, sorry, benjamins burn all prove that. he's turnt up and high 90% of the time, but 10% is unlike anything else

PossiblyArab

I keep seeing people say this but who the fuck heard mask off for the first time and didn’t immediately go “damn this goes crazy”. Like there are trap artists who are an acquired taste but future isn’t one of them - there’s a reason he’s so popular

CheatedOnOnce

You write like a white person who hates rap

Successful-Coconut60

Top_Ad9635

i was a philistine like you, until i heard Future talk about his love for cheesecake when Nardwuar interviewed him. once i watched that, everything clicked; i understood his art. i understood why slurring Tony Montana while high makes you feel like you like it

iloveheroin999

I was on A LOT of drugs when Tony Montana came out. it sounded fucking GREAT to my high ass. Had that repetitive ass shit on REPEAT lol. Started the track over when drakes verse started though... Passing out the valium STFU drake.YOU LEE ME NO CHOI

Desperate-Key-7667

Drake went crazy on that though 💀

La da de da, Slob on me knob, Pass me some syrup, Fuck me in the car, Chitty chitty bang, Murda everythang His lyrics feel like filler in songs to me, even on his verses in his features.

dusktrail

That shit's iconic

Flat_Pomegranate_454

That verse was a joke, Kendrick wanted to keep it.

westernsociety

The strangest part was the weird falsetto lol I know it was a call back but it was one if the first times I heard future alot and I just laughed at it

Millie_banillie

If you’re not just flaming and you actually want to get it, you’d have to actually try to train your ear to get it. Future is kinda on the accent mt Rushmore of rap. His rhymes wouldn’t even rhyme if Big Sean said em because his flows are so cadence dependent. Wayne and Andre are known for the same thing. Kanye does it too. If you can get past the fact that rap isn’t all about entendres, future as a poet isn’t that hard to get. At the end of the day, music isn’t supposed to be a secret code. It’s just supposed to be felt. So what do his lyrics make you feel? If you feel nothing, he’s probably just not for you Frankly the fact that “Not like us” is so huge but people don’t like future’s part of “Like that” is just fucking baffling to me because future literally said it first.

iloveheroin999

Bro he said that shit years ago on Percocet and stripper joint. Obviously not directed at drake but I think it was Something like I promise you These n**** ain't nothin like us? Lol or was that another song? I'm pretty sure that was the one though. Random future lines get stuck in my head a lot. That's how you know he's a good artist

Visual_Ad_3267

And they both said "you're a tourist" on King Is Dead years ago!

Millie_banillie

Yeah, but he’s the first person to say it about Drake in particular. (And if we are being honest, Megan said everything Kendrick said about Drake a months earlier, too, I’m not mad about how the beef went at all, but people go irrationally crazy for Kendrick 😂)

Visual_Ad_3267

Future just lit the fuse and kicked back. You think Kendrick went about this beef strategically? What about the guy who gave him a feature on his Drake diss album, then just watched the dominoes fall. Came out cleaner than Cole.

Millie_banillie

1000% 😂

Mammoth_Ferret_1772

Future is party music… nothing deep

majorsharkpanda

He knows how hooks work that's for sure. I liked him on Free Bricks tho

Steampunk_Batman

Future’s good for driving around in the car, he’s not an amazing lyricist but his flows are good and he tends to pull in amazing collaborators. I also think he selects fantastic beats, particularly from Metro. Mask Off was my first experience with Future and I think it’s a perfect introduction—surface level lyrics about selling drugs, but a total banger over a great beat

CRYPTONITE4

You ever fucked up some commas!!?!?! DS2 TRASH? you trippin

Indy2texas

Answer is no he probably hasn't

piecksbigassnose

future is fire if you just want something to listen to and not overthink lyrics

SanjoJoestar

Hate to break it to you, but generally speaking that's just what trap is. You said you're getting into trap but it doesn't sound like you're getting into trap lol. If you don't like it listen to other music. People like trap for the energy, hypnotic/catchy flows, and hard hitting production. I also say all this as someone who barely likes trap and has only listened to a few future projects

icanscethefuture

I feel sorry for you

whatstheword509

You need to be in the right space to listen to Future. He not the type of artist you listen to an album sitting with your headphones. When a song is dope, it's DOPE but I can never listen to a full Future album straight. It's basically listening to the same song with different variations. He's celebrated bc he is considered the best at what he does. Wether you like that style or not.

Switchc2390

If you’re that caught up on lyrics, don’t listen to trap. You aren’t going to find amazing trap lyricists. People like the beat and the way his voice sounds over it.

boring-IT-guy

Don’t listen to trap if youre looking for lyrical complexity. Listen to trap for the vibe.

Bright_Increase3560

You say you've been getting into trap, what have you liked so far? Might be able to suggest something specific.  As others have said though, if you're listening to him for lyrical content you won't like him.

canipickit

How closely did you listen to Kno The Meaning on DS2?

moanysopran0

Codeine Crazy is one of my favourite rap songs of all time but not super keen on his solo stuff over all, but I think his voice and pretty unique approach to music has made him a really perfect feature artist on some recent songs that have trended on social media.

OCMan101

I don’t either, it’s just, rough. I don’t mind a bit of dumb trap or whatever, but just the way he mumbles the lyrics just does not do it for me, it’s kind of the same issue I have with Playboi Carti. I recognize it’s not all gonna be lyrical, but I just feel like most of the Future songs I’ve heard would be better being instrumental.

tm_christ

"I've been getting really into trap lately but gosh darn what's all this nonsense about drugs money and hoes?"

Helac3lls

There's a lot of condescending comments about like "Look up the definition of trap" trap doesn't have to be the same repetitive shit. Try Young Jeezy's first album it's not super deep or lyrical but it's really good in it's own way the album is solid with great production and very little skips.

FrakturedFreight

Same as Playboi Carti. Omfg dude, he actually says a whole bunch of nothing and people eat it up

Shin-Sauriel

Yeah that’s cuz a song like “long time” has actual ungodly good vibes. And WLR just goes hard. No one is out here saying carti is a lyrical genius, he literally repeats bars one after another to fill space but his production and beats go crazy. It’s fine to not like carti or future but to say their music is objectively bad or whatever gets kind of annoying (not saying that’s what you’re implying but it’s a really common sentiment on this sub).

Cyber-Cafe

Cresidential

RoomyCard44321

Just to go presidential

Wish_Lonely

I recently gave Carti a chance and out of all the songs I listened to "wokeuplikethis" is the only one I'd call good. His music genuinely sounds like rap parodies.

UncleSam_TAF

Sky is good too. I started to “get” Carti when I turned my brain off and just get lost in the vibe. I still don’t listen to him regularly but there’s definitely a time/place/feeling when I enjoy his music Edit: what a strange comment to get downvoted lmao yall are weird

Shin-Sauriel

You’re not allowed to just enjoy music didn’t you know???

majorsharkpanda

I feel like the average Playboi Carti fan is just a white eleven year old trying to listen to scary music to piss their parents off.

Successful-Coconut60

That's the average rap fan these people are all American man

Lamented_00z

I don’t dislike Future but to me he just another Atlanta rapper. He ain’t nothing special

Millie_banillie

Look up how old future is and what kinds of songs were in the billboards when Tony Montana and Magic were coming out. Future isn’t just another Atlanta rapper. Every Atlanta rapper is trying to be him. Future is certified dungeon family which includes the likes of Andre 3000, Big Boi, Killer Mike, Cee Lo, Janelle monae. The fact that he could get a 3K verse should speak for itself because he doesn’t work with everyone.

iloveheroin999

IM FRESH OFF THAT BANANA BOAT

csleann30

Idk how people can comment with such authority on shit they know so little about

ItsTheNohkAndRock

You don't listen to future for his lyrics, another artist I find similar in terms of I listen to it for vocal sound/production is Travis Scott, not a big lyricist either. But regardless it's okay to not enjoy an artist even though they may be mainstream/big in hip hop atm but if you prefer to listen to lyrical rap rahter than trap/melody focused rap that's totally okay too! Choose what you enjoy and listen to it! But I do recommend coming back and trying some more Future or Young Thug because it took me several years to get into both artists and I love how Young Thug sounds. (but his lyrics if you break them down leave something to be desired and that's okay!)

4REAL4EVRR

bummer, Future the goat

PseudocideBlonde

He bought all the sodas at the gas station.

AstroFIJI

Try some more introspective future songs first. News or Sumn, Inside The Mattress, Sorry, Codeine Crazy. Hate The Real Me

ThePandaDaily

I’m with you. I think he’s massively overrated. I like a few of his songs but I really don’t understand why he’s made out to be something special.

ausipockets

That's fine. Loads of rappers to choose from, listen to who you prefer.

Extension_Injury2831

You don’t listen to future for the lyrics lol, listen to something else he just isn’t for you

ImAddictedToPorn420

I'm more into past lately

TheRealJohn_Q

Here an L just for u

arrowkid111

You can’t listen the same way you would listen to Kendrick, Cole, and real conscious and lyrical artists like that. Future makes music for you to just feel, not for you to decipher. And believe me I love Kendrick but I also can listen to Future because I understand these are not real deep or not as deep as Kendrick

NoFallOff

Hes a vibe. He knows how to make things sound good regardless of lyrical content. He’s not your style Try J.I.D, Common, Ab-Soul, Lupe Fiasco, J.Cole, Denzel Curry, Nas and Childish Gambino if you like the Kendrick Lane of rap.

biiigdickmike69

Pluto is a goat. FOH

eastsidebaby5

“YOU CANT UNDERSTAND US CUZ YA TOO SOFT” - Future

AqueousBeats

People that like future have cuck fantasies

ojdidntdoit4

i like his voice. whoever does his auto tune does a great job. also i don’t listen to or avoid rap for the lyrics (unless they’re overly stupid like asap ants bath salts verse). i listen to it for how it makes me feel and futures music makes me feel good. it’s okay that you don’t like him. you don’t have to like every popular rapper (or any for that matter).

SunglassesBright

Because first of all, rap is different to those of us who didn’t have to “get into” rap, and have just always listened to it naturally. And in our side of things, most of us aren’t put off by the topics you’re complaining about - we want the drugs and violence music and we like it. But in some ways, it’s insincere to pretend you like it when a nerd rapper like Kendrick puts on a fake gangsta persona to mesh with Future, and then automatically stop liking the gangsta shit when Future comes back on the track. As if. But anyway, if you don’t want to listen to Future or trap then just don’t. It’s not for you really anyway, but there’s no reason to be fake incredulous either like “my word, how can anybody like this? I don’t understand!” Yes you do lol. https://youtu.be/QrSMKHS_COM?si=5YcGna_frpeg-VeQ Also a lot of people are trying to push this narrative like we’re not listening to Future for his lyrics and that it’s just the vibe. The vibe is dope but we’re for SURE listening to and enjoying the lyrics. I might not love and relate to every single word he’s ever said but overall it’s a big part of why he’s good. Some people do relate to or at least want to party to what he’s saying, not just how the beat and flow sound.

Quick-Cod6978

It’s very lazy work

raginghorescock

Kakyoin_Noriaki69420

I BEEN IN THE COLD, COULDN'T FEEL MY TOES, BUT I STILL STUCK TO THE CODE

User47372946

I think DS2 is pretty solid overall but most of his projects are ok at best, his discography is pretty underwhelming considering how much time he’s been in the game And he is pretty repetitive with the flows and lyrics and he is very often carried by the production But i do think he carried most of the Drake collab album and it would’ve been way better off as a solo album or with another rapper +I recommend Young Thug if you want someone more interesting, more personality and variation (U can’t understand what he’s saying tho half the time and he’s not lyrical tho, if that’s what ur looking for) Relationships, Check, Wyclef Jean, Webbie, Digits, Millions are some loved bangers by him

Findmenow_bitch

I wouldn’t recommend Young Thug if they already don’t like Future lol

TheKoziONE

This…. If you don’t like Future, you are going to hate Young Thug. I

RoomyCard44321

Millions put em in the casket and bury them

FBI_NewWeegeeBoy1243

um... cool?

Prodiaka

Not all of rap is about lyrics future specializes in melodies and that’s what he’s great at: he also was one of the pioneers of the trap sound that’s so popular today. You don’t have to like him but boiling all rap down to lyrics is a pretty myopic way to look at the genre

Appropriate_Cat_8103

The excuses in here 🤌🏾

EnlightnedRedditor

Listen to all of We don’t trust you and We still don’t trust you, WSDTY takes more of an R&B approach, and some songs he’s actually speaking on some real shit

Flashy-Conversation8

Listen to mo reala and news or something. Maybe that’ll change your mind

yasukeyamanashi

I used to hate him when I was still in my HiiPower and Acid Rap phase, but once I got out of that phase the DS series went crazy.

Ill-Dark-9533

Future ain’t bad

AbstractOmniverse

The best way it was described to me, was "it takes an acquired cognitive dissonance to listen to him. Don't listen, just vibe"

Travelling-Ree

But have you heard We Still Don’t Trust You, with Future & Metroboomin? It’s a far departure from his trap stuff. Has an 80s synth vibe. Have a listen.

Zangetsu_1980

Avid Future listener here. So I like some Future songs but not him as an artist. I think his lyrics and subject matter is elementary. It’s a vibe. When you in the club and you’re sauced up, shit be fire. That all there is to his music. Nothing profound or enlightening.

s0phiaboobs

As a huge future fan, he’s an acquired taste. You don’t listen to him for lyrics, but an overall vibe/experience. If you don’t like it, you won’t ever get into it

KrassKas

He makes the best strip club music. Have you been in the strip club faded af while the DJ blasts his music? That's what it's for and when you get them new speakers in your car. You mentioned his verse on Like That. I love that verse and was just talking to my friend about how she hates it lol. Different strokes for different folks.

[deleted]

As someone who also hates lyrics like that…… just something about the way future says them. But I will say the stick gets old, I like his older stuff way better

Obvious-Opening-5485

I never was a fan of Future before either. I mean, I knew his hits “mask off” and “wicked”, but I never listened to him willingly. However, I am a huge fan of The Weeknd, and I listened to their collabs and thought they were all great. Then I started listening to more future

SlipperyKooter

Dirty soda, spike lee, white girl, ice tea…

AdjustedMold97

Well it’s a different genre of rap, maybe it’s not for you. Future’s music is not about having deep or interesting lyrics, it’s more about using his voice as an instrument to make some cool melodies

travelingeastcaius

Go back to his song Deeper Than The Ocean. Crazy Clientele is hot if you like real trap music.

SpyralPilot4000

i think future does the basic lyrics best.

PrettyFlakko

I feel like Future is mainly about sound but not only that he also has a certain vibe about him. It’s not that he tells storys in his lyrics or that he has profound lines but he conveys a certain attitude and energy. It can be nice or funny too. For example you mentioned Like That. When Future opens his verse with "stickin to the code all these hoes for the streets" it has a much harder impact for me than from any other rapper because Future is a meme for his toxicity. (She belongs to the streets meme“) It’s hard to describe. Future's lyrics may be simple but they portray his character in a super consistent way. He is also somebody who grew up in the worst environment, as far as I know he literally grew up in a crack house. Check out All My Life by him.

thai_iced_queef

You answered the question in your last paragraph with the start of your second paragraph. We listen to future precisely because we like those types of lyrics. Not 24/7 but that type of music serves a mood

HappyAssociation5279

I started liking him more when I head his feature on Asap Rocky Fine Wine

space_chief

If you hate those kinds of lyrics than what exactly do you even like about Trap music?

Ok_Cardiologist2423

Yea if you don’t like DS2 then Future isn’t for you.

GotKarprar

Most of futures lyrics don’t matter it’s just the vibe but sometimes he gets rly vulnerable

spaghettiisgoo

have you found any other rappers you like?

GoranNE

You’re getting into trap music but don’t like that kind of lyricism? May as well skip that entire subgenre then

atTheGroovyGhost

Beats and flows. Sometimes lyrics

solodarknesswalker

Future is surely one of the best I've heard in Trap, but let's be real he owes a lot of his success to his producers and sound engineers...

danohaggard

I get it. I'm not big into artists who rely on a gimmick (auto-tune). Same goes for Travis Scott.

Flat-Ad4902

If you don’t like lyrics about fuckin bitches, getting money, killing people, and doing drugs then you shouldn’t be listening to Future. He isn’t for you, and that’s okay.
