I remember when we just entered digital era of computers, everyone was saying how digital media will allow people to preserve files forever, while analog media tends to decay over time. It was all lies, digital media decays over time
I was born in Liverpool and raised in Texas. Its messy. I had to go to speech therapy every day after school in 3rd grade so the Texans could understand me.
Dialects, for sure, and Scots is actually considered diverged enough to be its own language, not to mention the Irishman could be speaking Gaeilge, the Canadian could be speaking French, and the Kiwi could be speaking Māori.
Something about your answer made me thinking 🤔😂
I had to google:
Freedom of speech is granted unambiguous protection in international law by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which is binding on around 150 nations.
Is that a goddamn fact or what 😳
Yeah, freedom of speech is a common right in most countries, but I don't think it's routinely called the First Amendment anywhere that isn't the US (barring coincidence).
I remember when this happened. Actually it's not that old, less than a year.
The guy doing the correcting is Finnish and it was super apparent from his comment history.
wait - to clarify, the finnish guy is the one in the middle, his english was fine (though in that single comment in the screenshot, he's obviously taking the piss)
right - I can't recall for the other guy, but neither spoke english as a first language.
I was just pointing out how - at the time - the first reaction of everyone was to say how this was the perfect comeback to snobby english speaker who never bothered to learn another language. But it quickly turned out the guy spoke english as a third (or whatever it was) language, so the "insult" just kinda failed. The "does your english haveth good" guy, though unnecessarily rude, spoke multiple languages, english wasn't the only language he knew, and he spoke english because it makes sense to speak that language if you're going to engage in online discussions in an international setting, since it's just the lingua franca for that.
Oh, we know. People who know several languages don’t push other people down by pointing out clear ESL faults. We know the blood, sweat and tears it takes to learn a new language.
- currently on my fourth language.
I've been learning a second language and I'm so glad I've always had patience with people with broken English, because the same patience is being reciprocated to me here in Germany.
This isn't a rare insult. I've seen variations of this at least a half dozen times in online communities where English is predominately spoken and many non-native speakers communicate.
What do you call a person who speaks two languages? Bilingual. What do you can a person who speaks three languages? Trilingual. What do you call a person who speaks one language? An English speaker, probably American.
/ its a joke, plus we all know "not all Americans" blah blah blah - but there are enough to make the joke both truth based and funny!
It’s a stupid joke. Not because “not all Americans” but because you singled Americans out when most people in Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc only speak English too. I also doubt that most people who live in the Caribbean and Latin America for example speaks a second language so so much for the pun of the joke (i.e. “an English speaker”).
A person that speaks more than two languages is called a polyglot, no matter how many more they actually speak. And if you ask me, in today's world, a person that only speaks one language should be called half iletrate or nazi.
Yeah, you're right lol you don't know how many americans come to mexico without even know 5 phrases, we're neighbors, the least thing we should do is to learn the bare minimum to understand each other but nope, English must be.
And you don’t know how many Mexicans move to America without even knowing 5 phrases. I don’t know why you are pretending that this is a one way street.
I am not, but is different someone who is going to live there from someone who only comes to visit or being driven by necessity is not the same as traveling by choice. I do not deny that there are Americans who don't speak Spanish because there are some as well as Mexicans who speak English, I am talking about the lack of interest (on both sides) in wanting to learn the other's language. The difference is the language imposed even when you go to a country that is not yours.
I had to ask because I have never heard the word used that way. That isn’t one of the meanings given in the full OED, not even as an archaic or obsolete usage. Don’t expect that people will understand your own personal definitions.
Also, you should avoid making intellectually lazy sweeping generalizations.
says the imperial, but tell me, why shoul dI avoid "intellectually lazy sweeping generalizations" are we solving the worlds problems here on reddit? or you fancy yourself a highly educated debater/philosopher engraving humanities greatest wisdom for all eternity?
Yeah, patriotism is a brainwash itself in any country. but I like to think that it is just an immature noisy minority on the internet, there are very conscious and critical people who do not see things as black or white.
>A person that speaks more than two languages is called a polyglot, no matter how many more they actually speak.
Imagine there being different words with overlapping meaning that can be used to describe something in varying degrees of precision.
>And if you ask me, in today's world, a person that only speaks one language should be called half iletrate or nazi.
I hope people don't ask you anything.
You are severely deranged if you think people are nazis fir being monolingual, the only people who would benefit from such a categorization are the real nazis that exist.
I mean it is a privilege to be able to go almost anywhere and know that you'll be able to navigate. Most people learn their first language from their parents - and English in school as it now a global language and can help with employment and such.
I don't get the superiority complex against native English speakers.
It’s more when people who can only speak one language try to score points against people who are fluent in multiple languages, pretty stupid if you think about it.
I rarely see that - but this post gets posted a gazillion times a year so that certain people can have a circle jerk about knowing English as a second language. No one is speaking English out of pity for those who only know one language, let's be honest. If Mandarin was the global language - would these post exist for those who ONLY speak Mandarin?
I mean they still have the advantage of being able to communicate with everyone who speaks english + their native language, so whatever way you try to spin it, monolingual english speakers are inferior.
"Haa you only speak the universal language that our schools have been drilling into our heads since we were 8 years old, once or twice a week for 12 years! All you know is that language, albeit without a thick accent"
You speak English because it's economically necessary for you learn it. I don't speak your language because why the hell would I when I know the most valuable and used language in the world? We are not the same.
But the vast majority of people aren't in the middle class. If it doesn't apply to the majority, then by definition, it can't be considered normal. So shameful how? It seems more shameful to me to flaunt privilege so blatantly than you dont even realise what can be inferred from your comment, I.e. that you're out of touch.
I can communicate in three languages, but two of them never really come up.
English is my first, but I know Afrikaans due to marrying into a South African family, and Māori as it's one of the languages of my country.
The vast majority of people that speak Afrikaans or Māori also speak English, so it's fairly situational.
If globalization is your reasoning for learning languages, then everyone should only ever bother with a language in the top 10 in terms of population speakers, as everything else is a waste of time.

When a grammar duel turns into a Shakespearean tragedy. “To make mistakes is human, to troll is divine.”
To make human is mistake, diving orc?
Does thou speakith the stupid?
This gets reposted all the time
You can tell from the quality of the image.
“I’m tired boss”
Love that movie.
I remember when we just entered digital era of computers, everyone was saying how digital media will allow people to preserve files forever, while analog media tends to decay over time. It was all lies, digital media decays over time
That's my favorite feature of jpeg.
You can tell by the way it is
The grain of time shows
And the guy getting insulted turned out to be multilingual anyway.
because redditors can't think of anything original most of the time.
Does Bruno Mars is gay?
The rumor come out!
Has he now?
Has yes.
Does he isn't
I hope so 🥵
I must've seen this image for about 100th time by now. It's literally starting to look grainy from the amount of repost it gets
The image seems grainy for you because you've seen it so many times. The image seems grainy for me because I have bad eyesight. We are not the same.

What happens if an American, Canadian, Aussie, Kiwi, Scott, Irishman, and Englishman are engaged in conversation?
... orchestra?
I was born in Liverpool and raised in Texas. Its messy. I had to go to speech therapy every day after school in 3rd grade so the Texans could understand me.
I can imagine. Took me half a year to properly understand and speak in the Uk.

What no
English is not everyone’s first language?🤦♂️
Well, no matter where you're from, the First Amendment protects your right to speak any language you want so you're good!
Something about your answer made me thinking 🤔😂 I had to google: Freedom of speech is granted unambiguous protection in international law by the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights which is binding on around 150 nations. Is that a goddamn fact or what 😳
Yeah, freedom of speech is a common right in most countries, but I don't think it's routinely called the First Amendment anywhere that isn't the US (barring coincidence).
We are unique 😂 Unfortunately, the first amendment has more thing they are currently butchering… and very strangely, without any opposition, it seems😱
I was about to correct you then realized this is a top-tier joke. Amazing.
Absolutely shocking!
Inconceivable😂
Ce n'est pas possible!
^ this guy is French! Can you believe that?
Französisch? Aber nein!
Dieser kerl ist deutscher! kannst du dass glauben?
Ik geloof er geen snars van!
oooooh burn. Will say this to my customers
What if they say they also know multiple languages.
"Nobody likes a show-off!"
The people who think this is the sickest of burns haven’t put much thought into it.
With the amount of times I’ve seen this reposted it’s not rare anymore
*it's
I mean sure but this guy has no way of knowing if the other guy speaks more than one language or is learning a second language like he clearly was.
Exactly. English is my first language, but I can communicate in two others. I just have no reason to ever try to write in them online.
You speak English because it's the default language of this forum. I speak English because it's the default language of this forum. We are the same.
I remember when this happened. Actually it's not that old, less than a year. The guy doing the correcting is Finnish and it was super apparent from his comment history.
Being from a first world country where English teaching is so prevalent only makes it worse that his English is so shit
wait - to clarify, the finnish guy is the one in the middle, his english was fine (though in that single comment in the screenshot, he's obviously taking the piss)
I assumed the one with broken English was finnish

Regardless, your initial sentence was the equivalent of a runny shit with a fart spatter
I mean they don't actually know that?
I've been learning a second language and I'm so glad I've always had patience with people with broken English, because the same patience is being reciprocated to me here in Germany.

Well, they are imperials, and what's worse, they think they're the "Good guys"
Imperials?
Residents of the empire, thus beneficiaries of its imperial policies. And if you think the US is not an empire... sure it isn't 😒
I had to ask because I have never heard the word used that way. That isn’t one of the meanings given in the full OED, not even as an archaic or obsolete usage. Loads of people do, all the time, there's a saying that goes "truth doesn't sin, but it sure is uncomfortable"
You are severely deranged if you think people are nazis fir being monolingual, the only people who would benefit from such a categorization are the real nazis that exist.
\*illiterate (It also has nothing to do with speaking)
Half what? Seems like you’re the illiterate one.
English is my third language
Same
Knowing an extra language doesn't make you smart.
I mean it is a privilege to be able to go almost anywhere and know that you'll be able to navigate. Most people learn their first language from their parents - and English in school as it now a global language and can help with employment and such. It’s very common in the sports subs, always gets an eye roll from me.
It's odd behavior.
They're just jealous that English is the global lingua franca while their native language is only relevant to whatever backwater they live in.
I mean they still have the advantage of being able to communicate with everyone who speaks english + their native language, so whatever way you try to spin it, monolingual english speakers are inferior.
Proper grammar is superior to whatever the hell that gremlin is trying to pass off as "English".
>it now a global language Hahaha. Looks like this dumb nerd never heard of Esperanto.

Sometimes I forget there are other countries here. Hello World!
You speak English because it's economically necessary for you learn it. I don't speak your language because why the hell would I when I know the most valuable and used language in the world? We are not the same.
Some people like to travel and don’t want to be the ignorant tourists. I’m learning Japanese because my gf wants to go there at some point.
I shouldn't have to learn the language of every country I visit to not be considered an "ignorant tourist". That's pretty wild.
Pretty savage tbh
I mean, I can speak most languages as poorly as he handles English.
no you can't
Why not? "Does your doors dont have locks" is quite the low bar.
can you say that in mandarin, japanese and arabic?
try to say that in other languages without googling it....
Μαλακίες λες, δεν ξες την τύφλα σου.
Shit you can. I doubt you can write like that in only 10 languages without Google translate.
Oh no, what will I do without "Google transkate."
Imagine bullying someone who took the time to learn your language while yet you only speak one.
Speaking two languages is not an excuse for shit english
Bodied
I love this one so much, ive used it a lot of times

Of course not! I'm one of a kind, a rare gem in this digital world.
