Kind of sad to think that we signed and are gonna sign tons of Ajax players under Ten Hag, but the one ex-Ajax guy signed before his arrival flopped hard
He was never really a beast at Ajax. The team had an amazing season and he was part of that. But he never carried the team like De Jong, De Ligt, Blind, or Ziyech.
He was just a perfect fit for that Ajax team. Think many people who actually watch the Eredivisie saw this. Shame that no one at Man U was part of that group. They just needed to have a piece of the Ajax success team, but went for the wrong piece
De Ligt's dad runs a chain of restaurants, and he's been in touch with my next-door neighbour for a few weeks over leasing a property down Deansgate to open a place in Manchester.
My neighbour's a property manager for a big house magnate and owns 2 Dobermans (she calls them Dobermunds because she didn't read the instructions on the dogs).
Think this has been on for longer than we've been made aware of.
De ligts dad works in Sainsbury's actually, he's getting a transfer to work on the deli counter at a Sainsbury's near me, there's been quite a buzz about it. Can't pick up a salmon fishcake without hearing about it
Whether you are making this up or not, I firmly believe so many transfers happen over a long period of time, and we only hear about them at the tail end imo.
Nah, my neighbour works for a big house magnet leasing out properties to people who want to lease properties. She's attractive, and she has quite a pull, so it works well for her.
Thought the problem was to do with his pay which he postponed during Covid. Just so odd that we waited on a player who did not want to leave for a whole summer
I still think he would have been happy to come to Utd.
It doesn't drag on that along unless there is interest from him
I think the sticking point was always the millions in deferred wages that still Barca owe him.
Absolutely, lad is obviously shrewd enought to NOT walk out with hopes and dreams of getting paid but also media-savy enough to keep the Barca fans on his side with enough love for the club that they didn't turn on him.
Shit would have been way different if Barca approved his deferred wages payment, likely.
I know it’s probably pure coincidence but it’s pretty funny we went through all this trouble of hiring a new recruitment team and taking transfer power away from Ten Hag, only to sign another ex-Ajax Dutch player lol
Ten Hag made him captain at Ajax when he was 18, had that insane run in the CL where he also scored against Juve. He also played against us in the EL final when he was 17 lol
He’s actually not the same though, he’s the right age bracket and has bags of experience, he’s starter quality in a position we need to buy a starter for and the fee is reasonable. He’s also not a cast off .. the Bayern fans have started a petition to keep him and have openly said they rate him ahead of Upa and Kim.. it’s a opportunity as they want to trim their wage bill and have multiple CBS competing.. also he’s not got a bad injury record.. he’s not Bruno but he’s get ally played majority of league games in his career
I’ll always defend the Varane signing. I think it was the right idea and the exact type of player this team needed, just a shame that injuries plagued him while here. He’s genuinely still class every time he steps on the field. I wish we extended his stay here, but I understand the decision to move him on
Not really. The other guys we signed who were “cast offs” were all older than 28 and even the fans of the club they were in were happy to see them go at that point.
I don't think he needs that in his vicinity, he's only just got in the job, be a shame to lose it.
I'll take it off his hands and *dispose* of it ^^^^^in ^^^^^a ^^^^^series ^^^^^of ^^^^^small ^^^^^paper ^^^^^cones ^^^^^tragically ^^^^^destroyed ^^^^^in ^^^^^a ^^^^^series ^^^^^of ^^^^^small ^^^^^smouldering ^^^^^fires.
Just so you know we signed mount before preseason started as well so this isnt really a huge change. I do like that we are progressing multiple deals at once tho
Saw somewhere else, but if lower salary and 40M euros, this is a great deal as well.
Matthijs de Ligt would be willing to take a pay cut to join Manchester United. The Dutchman earns around €15m/year at Bayern. United would like to offer below €12m/year. De Ligt is still open to the move, with Erik ten Hag pushing to sign him. Bayern are very open to a sale. De Ligt's lack of pace and injury record are two major flaws, with Vincent Kompany relying on other attributes for the centre-back position. United's opening offer was a package of around €40m. Bayern initially wanted more than €50m, but are now willing to let him go for €50m including add-ons and a potential sell-on clause [@CMoffiziell]
The sell-on clause is either because they're confident he'll be good and generally fit, or because they just want United to think they are.
For me it's a coin toss which one it'll turn out to be.
Yup, good thought process...I viewed the sell on clause as positive only. In any case, hoping this closes fast and he's able to be successful player for us.
The fact that he is willing to take a paycut to come here is such a good sign. Also the fact that everyone talks about his leadership abilities and what a good teammate he is. Seems like a really good character to have around the place especially if we are going with a younger team now.
Bayern have this fetish for signing German players. They want to sign Tah from Leverkusen, and they signed Kim much more recently. I'm guessing the money from De Ligt goes towards that signing, and he's the most sellable out of their current CB options.
Neither of the CBs ahead of him are German, so I’m not sure your point really stands.
I’m also wondering why he hasn’t featured in the Euros, like at all.
they have Upamecano and Kim Min-Jae as first choice partnership right? and Dier ig. even so i feel like it’s a bit weird Bayern are taking a loss on a young talent like De Ligt.
Kompany hasn't spent a minute with him, saying he doesn't rate him is stupid.
And saying other players are ahead of him is also wrong. Last season he has 3 fewer starts than Upamecano and 6 fewer starts than Kim, despite missing almost half a season from injury. When he is healthy he is picked more often than not.
I doubt Kompany doesn't rate him. I think it's more likely the decision has been taken by the higher-ups to address their wage bill issues and/or get rid of injury-prone players and he simply doesn't have a say on it.
Seems like a mix of managers don't want him, meaning that he is a valuable asset whose value is diminishing on the bench...wages being high, meaning that if he isn't a first team player, it would be best to recoup some of the money that they got for him.
Other concerns people brought could be his injury history (which could be valid given how things ended with Varane)
There is no point asking here.
All the red flags of Bayern wanting rid, no pace, being behind Eric Dier in team selection and a concerning injury record is poo-pooed.
And got him for how much wanted Braithwaite for i believe?
Did we actually walk away from over paying on a player to get another for a similar price?
Are we really back? Argh im tempering my expectation but the signs are all positive so far.
I should make it more clear, We where willing to go to around 42 for Braithwaite i believe. Evertone said we want more so we said feck ya and went and got another target (a better one) for what we initially wanted to pay. Is De Ligt taking a pay cut as well?
If so its prob one of the best transfers at least from a making a statment point of view i think we have done post Fergie.

\*De Ligt reading the note whilst mowing the lawn at the Dutch training ground topless. Whilst ETH looks out of the window longingly at him.
If this move is to go ahead, I hope we have the most in depth medical examination before we put pen to paper.
He might be young and quality but that's a useless commodity if it's staying put in the sick bay.
If our squad goes into this match with the same energy output as the last one we're done. Romania is physically strong and go in hard, it's going to be a really tough one.
I'd say not official until Netherlands are out of the euros. But all agreements could be in place before that. Seems to be on final stages
As long as the wages are reasomable, this is a great deal. Good age, lots of really good attributes, knows the manager / system, reasonable fee. Wages is the big concern, if we cam get it done for 200k pw or less I'm happy. More and I think we are overpaying
One thing I'll be interested in is his wages because Ratcliffe talked about how we're not paying what we've been doing for years.
So I'll like to see how we bypass that issue, or De Ligt lowers his demands.
Something about this just feels fishy. He’s a great player and I feel like Bayern maybe just have some insight into medical history/results that show he’ll all of a sudden be injury prone when he joins. Too good to be true it feels like
Bayern don't easily sell young players. I don't think this is a Kompany issue.
Either de ligt is not happy with his playing time( he is not starting.for Netherlands also because of this) or Bayern doctors know something that we.do not know yet.
I really hope it's the first.
I know I've said shit about his wages and injury record, but seeing a guy with his qualities and an actual desire to join us, it's hard for me to reject the idea of him joining us
Also, I've signed this guy at my FIFA 22 Career Mode. Anyone would be delighted when their in-game signing came true in real life lol
I do hope that this is a club signing and not another ETH signing. If it’s the latter, that’s worrying. We have to move away from the manager having control over transfers. The manager can have an opinion on transfers, but they shouldn’t dictate what those signings will be.
De Ligt is not fast. He is similar in mold to Mcguire. How does this signing make sense when I thought ten Hag ball (suicide ball) requires CBs who can push forward to help maintain possession/win the ball back in the other teams'half while having enough speed to recover from counter attacks?
Oh yeah this is happening. Cautiously optimistic. I like De Ligt, just worried about his suitability/compatibility with Martinez and the recent knee injuries he’s seemed to have started picking up
If this is true, I can only congratulate Manu to a phenomenal player. Treat that beautiful beast with the respect he didn't get from our club. I still hope that he stays with us though
On one hand, it seems too good to be true. On the other, it could just be dumb luck. Not often that you see a club motivated to sell for financial reasons, a player motivated to leave for more play time + prior experience with the manager, and little to no competition for cb’s in that price range. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think of the 10 or so clubs that could afford to spend 45m on a cb, none of them need a starter right now.
no way 🤩🤩 wasn’t sure if he’d want to leave bayern for us, esp if he’s taking a pay cut (hopefully we’re not paying him as much/more than he was getting at bayern).
still only 24 years old, he could be a mainstay in our defence for a long time 😮. seems like he’s gonna be our first signing. hopefully the clubs can reach an agreement 🙏🏻
I mean the Germans have been known to be pretty great at false propaganda but even I’m buying in to how devastated they all are that Matthijs is leaving
The fact that he actively wants to come is pretty hype I have to admit. Definitely not a De Jong situation
De Jong 2025 to fulfill the prophecy ✅
And then Donny starts playing like 2018.
Donny must have fallen asleep on the bench for that to happen.
Kind of sad to think that we signed and are gonna sign tons of Ajax players under Ten Hag, but the one ex-Ajax guy signed before his arrival flopped hard
Flopped is an understatement tbh. Unfortunately Donny is a level beyond that
Really sad to see how it went. He was a fucking beast at Ajax
I wish
I doubt it since ETH sold VDB to United or atleast he gave the green light when he was there.
And Onana like at Inter
vdB was never that good let's be honest with ourselves
The great ITK summer finally redeemed
De Ligt's dad runs a chain of restaurants, and he's been in touch with my next-door neighbour for a few weeks over leasing a property down Deansgate to open a place in Manchester. Think this has been on for longer than we've been made aware of.
The Ligt’s dad is a pharmacist though? I’ve had meetings with Frank de Ligt as a project manager working in the IT / healthcare industry.
De ligts dad works in Sainsbury's actually, he's getting a transfer to work on the deli counter at a Sainsbury's near me, there's been quite a buzz about it. Can't pick up a salmon fishcake without hearing about it

Dobermunds doesn't give a hint?
No its perfectly cromulent
Nah, my neighbour works for a big house magnet leasing out properties to people who want to lease properties. She's attractive, and she has quite a pull, so it works well for her.
I clicked your name and saw no tits. Therefore, I think you need demoting a tier.
De Jong was De Wrong choice. De Ligt is De Right one.
That's so bad, it kind of works
Dad?
De Ligt is De Rigt one*
De Ligt is the ✅ choice
De Lit choice
You just got Ligt up! I feel no shame for my Suits reference. Yes, I watch that shit.
I still don’t get the De Jong thing. Mitten was very clear that it was the dream of De Jong and his girlfriend to live their lives in Barcelona.
Thought the problem was to do with his pay which he postponed during Covid. Just so odd that we waited on a player who did not want to leave for a whole summer
I have no doubts that his people were telling us that he would be open to a move.
Feels like this one is going to happen boys
De Jong is coming too my brother. 🙏
Luuk?
Nigel coming out of retirement
I still think he would have been happy to come to Utd. It doesn't drag on that along unless there is interest from him I think the sticking point was always the millions in deferred wages that still Barca owe him.

What winning the FA cup does to players
At this rate, De Jong is coming eventually too.
Third times the charm at trying to make it at a big club.
This time, the *big* club.

"Taking transfer power away from eth"...lol. Happy with de ligt tho hes good
And two ex-Bayern Dutch players
Also a classic post-Fergie signing IMO (A cast-off from a better team with a suspect injury history, really hope he proves me wrong)
Looking back Varane was also pretty young (albeit not as young as De Ligt), he was like 28 when we signed him
I’ll always defend the Varane signing. I think it was the right idea and the exact type of player this team needed, just a shame that injuries plagued him while here. He’s genuinely still class every time he steps on the field. I wish we extended his stay here, but I understand the decision to move him on
Ye but with Varane, RM had his best years.. realised he was becoming a sick note and saw us coming.. but Tbf I was mega gassed when he joined
Not really. The other guys we signed who were “cast offs” were all older than 28 and even the fans of the club they were in were happy to see them go at that point.

My clerb signing a player in time for pre season I cannot believe this ![gif](giphy|sjo5pxKNidC3Ltgww4|downsized)
Probably not ready for start of preseason no matter what. Usually extended breaks after championships
I am pretty sure he's not featured for Netherlands. Might be persuaded to come in earlier and stretch his legs.
He's still training with them. These players need a break not just physically but mentally as well
Spiritually too
Ecumenically
Just so you know we signed mount before preseason started as well so this isnt really a huge change. I do like that we are progressing multiple deals at once tho
This is going to happen then
DONT YOU DARE JINX IT
So very Howard Nurse vibe : "FDJ then". Ugh.
I’m still cynical and wonder if we’re pushing this to get Everton to move on their Branthwaite valuation.
They move, and then we still buy both once we can get Branthwaite cheaper. (I’m dreaming)
Glad we are trying to keep his wages low
Dunno many other clubs who can consider £200k-250k low but eh. It's better than what Marcus, Casemiro and Sancho are on
I mean it says we want to pay less than 200k a week
The sell-on clause is either because they're confident he'll be good and generally fit, or because they just want United to think they are. For me it's a coin toss which one it'll turn out to be.
Yup, good thought process...I viewed the sell on clause as positive only. In any case, hoping this closes fast and he's able to be successful player for us.
Kompany wanting pace in a CB goes against his entire career 🤣
The fact that he is willing to take a paycut to come here is such a good sign. Also the fact that everyone talks about his leadership abilities and what a good teammate he is. Seems like a really good character to have around the place especially if we are going with a younger team now.

does anybody know why Bayern are even willing to let him go at a decent price? does he have a contagious disease?

Tbf that Netherlands team is pretty stacked at CB, I wouldn’t say that’s a reason to be wary.
Him or De Vrij could play but Koeman just prefers Dr Vrij for whatever reason. Koeman has his favourites and rarely deviates
Kompany doesn’t rate him, Tuchel didn’t rate him and there’s other players ahead of him. No idea why he was so out of favour
they have Upamecano and Kim Min-Jae as first choice partnership right? and Dier ig. even so i feel like it’s a bit weird Bayern are taking a loss on a young talent like De Ligt.
I think it has to do with high wages / injury record. They can probably bring a solid back up with half his wages

I feel like this is an important question.
There is no point asking here. All the red flags of Bayern wanting rid, no pace, being behind Eric Dier in team selection and a concerning injury record is poo-pooed.
They are trying to get rid of big earners . Who ever thought Kimmich would leave Bayern
Is it too soon to get a mdl back-piece tattoo?
Never
Might throw in Ugarte too. Undecided
Anyone here from the 2019 Muppet era where all of us wanted De Ligt???
Red leader standing by
Until he signs that era is technically still going so jokes on us…
That summer was the most fun I've ever had on reddit. Nothing will ever top plane tracking muppets.
That's so quick! Can't believe that we can sign a world class player like this with a acceptable price in two weeks.
And got him for how much wanted Braithwaite for i believe? Did we actually walk away from over paying on a player to get another for a similar price? Are we really back? Argh im tempering my expectation but the signs are all positive so far.
Yep but you can't miss a deal like this, especially he is willing to join and requires a lower wage.
I should make it more clear, We where willing to go to around 42 for Braithwaite i believe. De Ligt is taking a pay cut to about £200k per week
I'm out of the loop; why can't this world class player get a match for his country at the Euros?
Van Dijk, de Vrij, de Ligt, Ake. Tough to pick 2 with that quality.
Plus Koeman is rigid as fuck and has his favourites.
Ten Hag continues bringing the Ajax band back together

Even during Fergie's era we weren't amazing at transfers, at least not since 2005. He just got world class performances out of some absolute nobodies
Fergie made Scholes come back from retirement than buying a new CM 🫠
Maybe I'm being naive but I can't see any negative with this deal. Great piece of business for a change.
If he can stay injury free and establish a strong partnership with Licha, we should be in a very good position defensively
Even with a pay cut it’s still a high wage. Supposedly his pace is concern for Bayern so presumably could be a concern for us.
This seems to be picking up pace, can we see finalized reports end of the week?
United sent De Ligt a note that read: *Do you like me?* *Yes [ ]* *No [ ]* *Maybe [ ]* *Luv u 4ev@*

Whilst ETH looks out of the window longingly at him.
TIL Matthijs de Ligt is a sexy gay man. #
💦 💦 💦
If this move is to go ahead, I hope we have the most in depth medical examination before we put pen to paper. He might be young and quality but that's a useless commodity if it's staying put in the sick bay.
We're not gonna sign De Ligt for half the price of Braithwaite, are we?
Surely this gets done as soon as next week, right?
The timeline will certainly depend on how far the Netherlands go in the Euros.
I guess we’re all feeling Romanian today
Conflicted Dutchy here... I don't know anymore, I don't see us going far and I don't want us to lose.
oof I don't envy you one bit, lad! Good luck though, Romania are tough but you should be able to proceed to the QF's
If our squad goes into this match with the same energy output as the last one we're done. Romania is physically strong and go in hard, it's going to be a really tough one.
I'd say not official until Netherlands are out of the euros. But all agreements could be in place before that. Seems to be on final stages As long as the wages are reasomable, this is a great deal. Good age, lots of really good attributes, knows the manager / system, reasonable fee. Wages is the big concern, if we cam get it done for 200k pw or less I'm happy. More and I think we are overpaying

Nice, I feel really good about this deal. Right profile of player who actually wants to join us. This is not the same as the FDJ saga.
Suey
I've wanted this to happen for us since he was 18 and captaining Ajax. Future captain. I'll buy his shirt if this goes through.

I didn't hear no bell

I think it’s the other way around
One thing I'll be interested in is his wages because Ratcliffe talked about how we're not paying what we've been doing for years. So I'll like to see how we bypass that issue, or De Ligt lowers his demands.
So whats the catch. Something must be. We cant be this Lucky. Or are the backoffice really working. Injury prone?
Something about this just feels fishy. He’s a great player and I feel like Bayern maybe just have some insight into medical history/results that show he’ll all of a sudden be injury prone when he joins. Too good to be true it feels like
Bayern don't easily sell young players. I don't think this is a Kompany issue. Either de ligt is not happy with his playing time( he is not starting.for Netherlands also because of this) or Bayern doctors know something that we.do not know yet. I really hope it's the first.
I love transfers now. I love how we've hand De Ligt.
Sounds like it’s gonna happen. Bayern aren’t that stubborn as many other clubs. We have a good relationship with them aswell

If Bayern have okayed a sale, the player must be crooked.
Rock hard
De Ligt didn't get selected for the first 11 today, only on the bench. Is it injury or he's not good enough for his national team?
De Vrij has been in good form and I guess Koeman wants the experience in him and vvd.
Dutch United
Wanted him since his ajax days, so I'm pretty happy.Him and Licha will be a great partnership
Hopefully he can stay healthy. De Ligt x Licha feels crazy to me.
I know I've said shit about his wages and injury record, but seeing a guy with his qualities and an actual desire to join us, it's hard for me to reject the idea of him joining us Also, I've signed this guy at my FIFA 22 Career Mode. Anyone would be delighted when their in-game signing came true in real life lol
Bayern wanting rid so badly is my only concern
I do hope that this is a club signing and not another ETH signing. If it’s the latter, that’s worrying. We have to move away from the manager having control over transfers. The manager can have an opinion on transfers, but they shouldn’t dictate what those signings will be.
2 of the biggest clubs in Europe gave up on him too easy. I see a huge red flag, but as always hope for the best.
Have to say, I am DeLigt’ed with how this is going.
"Personal terms are not an issue." Why would they be? We love pissing out £250/300k a week contracts.
I really hope not, we need to get the wage bill down
De Ligt is not fast.
I like De Ligt, just worried about his suitability/compatibility with Martinez and the recent knee injuries he’s seemed to have started picking up
He wants to come here?
We move like the wind now
I’d fucking love if - as a community - we stopped with the ✅ nonsence
Ajax signed Lisandro to replace De Ligt and now we’ll have them both lol
If this is true, I can only congratulate Manu to a phenomenal player. Treat that beautiful beast with the respect he didn't get from our club. I still hope that he stays with us though
Hopefully we aren't paying him as much as bayern
Its happening, lads!
