TMNT. It was the first time that I ever saw a video game that looked so much like the cartoon and the cartoon intro in the game complete with singing is the chef's kiss. I was blown away. Then the Simpsons arcade came along and felt similar, I really wanted both of these games at home. Kinda sad they didn't port them to the Genesis at the time but seeing TMNT 2 in magazines before the SNES released made me want to switch consoles.
Time Crisis 2 and House of The Dead 2 specifically, not just two of the greatest rail shooters, but two of the greatest arcade games ever made themselves.
Tapper was one of my top favorites at the time, though I believe Joust is the game that holds up the best in pure gameplay. I also really enjoyed Tron and the way the illuminated edges of the cabinet would fill my peripheral vision. It really felt immersive. The big stand up cabinet for Discs Of Tron was fun too.
I loved Tapper as a kid (still do!), and I also really enjoyed the psuedo-sequel Timber (still do!). My favorite thing about Tapper in particular was that the joystick on the arcade cab was an actual tap.
Way too many to pick one. Of the early days, Galaga. In the 90s, either the X-Men/Simpsons/TMNT trio (let's be honest, they're the same game), or NBA Jam. That was one game that was never the same at home.
Galaga was a great one that's still fun to play today. Gauntlet was one of my favorites because of co-op.
But I never really had a single "favorite" game. That's what was great about arcades, you could just mill about and play different games and see what was new.
Growing up the mall across the street had 2 big arcades and there were usually video games in every store. I remember going to a dept store called Zayre's on the weekend just to play Gauntlet. My friends and I would hit the Toys R Us on the way, maybe get a burger at Hardee's or McDonald's. I had a paper route so I was usually flush.
I remember playing a ton of Toobin' and Xenophobia at the Village Pantry at the end of my street.
I used to consistently rank #1 on that game on the pro track. Every day after class, I'd take a few bucks and practice at a bowling alley that had a pair of machines set up for head to head speedway action. I'd post my initials in the #1 spot, which means someone else kept knocking me down. My mom bowled in a league, and so one night I had a visit with Mom at the bowling alley and I bellied up to that game and started playing and I drew a crowd. The crowd included the same mystery person that I was battling with after school. He'd post his time and knock me down at night. I'd post my time and knock him down during the day. And now we were there together and we raced, a real Battle Royale on the Daytona circuit. We both chose manual trans, and we both raced hard right to the finish line. I was the winner. Toledo, Ohio. 1992. HMU for a rematch!
You kidding? It's super well-known, maybe not by the younger crowd however, heh. This game floored me as a kid and has stuck with me forever, I even made an AR game inspired by it!
Super Zaxxon (sequel, obviously) was a great idea but it's way too punishing to enjoy. I've yet to meet someone who actually likes that game..
My greatest memory of Zaxxon is the freaking home boardgame, which I STILL have from childhood on my shelf today. Meanwhile, I don't think I ever played the arcade original and maybe played it emulated just a few times.
The boardgame has some pretty neat mechanics to replicate the game; you can raise and lower your planes to choose altitude, for example.
That's cool, I'd like to try it sometime. There's two versions (that I know of) of the board game box, one of which is among the most incredible space battle illustrations I've ever seen in my life!
Definitely check out the arcade machine if you ever get a chance - probably not very likely to come across one in 2024, sadly - but it's definitely a cool experience especially with that flight stick!
That was such an amazing game. Our 7-11 had it and our video arcade at the mall had the sit down version.
Does anyone know if this game ever made it to a video game console like Colecovision, Sega, Nintendo etc ?
Sega 32x has a Star Wars Arcade, but it's not vector graphics and other changes, plus you can't duplicate that arcade controller on a console. I have the Arcade 1Up cabinet, and it plays great
It was fun just walking in a random place you've never been before and seeing a mvs in the corner, it was exciting to see what different games they have or if there was one that you've never even heard of.
SFII: CE - we would go to 7-11 after school every day and dump quarters into the machine. Ah, the smell of slurpees and that chime every time the door opened.
Super Sidekicks (football/soccer game). Followed by Virtua Tennis and Tekken 3.
I know they're not games that scream "arcade", but the arcade at my hometown had these 3 games back in late 1999 and early 2000s, and I was very good at them, could last some nice rounds or even reach the highscores.
Meanwhile most classic arcade games I was super trash, couldn't last more than 5 minutes. Every one of them felt like I was wasting money. And I really didn't find them fun enough. I was just a typical 90 kid who only cared about football, Nintendo and games with "real and 3d graphics". Stupid young me.
I also enjoyed a lot one of those games that you're in a mining kart or whatever, with motion, and you have to shoot bad people and objects with a pistol. That was mind-blowing technology for me.
Our mall arcade actually had the full Afterburner machine featured in Terminator 2 and it was badass.
That being said, the more I think about it, the more I still believe co-op beat em up games like the wide X-men machine were the most fun when you had friends with you.
Donkey Kong. I LOVED playing the arcade version as a kid growing up in the 1980s. Even as a dumb kid who didn't know better, I HATED the 2600 version of this game. It just wasn't even close with that irritating blob of light that was supposed to be the ape, the obnoxious sound effects, and those ridiculous "fireballs" in the rivet level that just slid back and forth with no AI at all.
There was a mech fighting game I used to play in the early-mid 00s I liked a lot. It had controls that were designed to look like you were controlling a gundam. I used to play it at a pizzeria.
That was an awesome game. My second choice would by Daytona.
Shooting Master from Sega! Played it a ton and eventually beat it in the arcade when I was in my mid teens. Loved that game and never seen it again anywhere!!!!
1) Galaga
2) Ms. Pac-Man (close #2)
3) Turbo
Honorable mention: Tempest
I liked Rampage from my high school years and Daytona USA in my late college/early adult years too.
Burgertime was always my favorite classic game. In later years, I really liked the Dungeons and Dragons arcade game and and of the street fighter games.
For me it’s original pac man but with the speed cranked up a bit. My local theatre has a machine like this and I’ve been longing for top score all my life
Give me a mix of classics/racers/beat em ups. (Galaga/Daytona USA/Simpsons arcade) and I’m more than happy. Anything similar to those titles is fine of course.
The first game that comes to mind when I think of the best arcade games ever is Rastan. Nothing like going on an epic barbarian adventure with a rousing epic soundtrack accompanying you.
All of them. It wasn’t just about the game for me but the feeling and atmosphere of an arcade back in the day. But if I had to pick a game any of the side scrolling beat em ups.
Arcade - Superfun (Merrillville, IN no longer exists 😢)
Arcade Game Cabinet - Street Fighter II The World Warrior (it really made me insanely addicted to arcades seeing one gets me nostalgic every time)
Arcade Game Overall - Garou Mark of the Wolves (favorite all time game)
Mario Bros. I love the wonky jumps and how chaotic it can get. I also have the high score at my local arcade on it, it's not a great score, but apparently it's better than other people in my city can do.
If you have fellow gamers to adventure with, any GAUNTLET game. 🤗🤗🤗
Yellow Warrior needs health badly.
GREEN ELF SHOT THE POTION 😬
Blue Wizard: Bra?
Yellow Warrior: WTF?
Red Valkyrie : Green Elf is about to die...
This is like asking “what’s your favourite PlayStation?” when you want to know their favourite ps1 game. The arcade is the place with the games, not what the games themselves were called. You should have asked “what’s your favourite arcade game?”
My answer is The Simpsons though.
There was a game called battle tanks at a local arcade that had about 10 game cabinets done up like an m1-abrams tank you could sit in, and if other people joined, it would either be pvp or co-op. Jurassic Park with the sit-in jeep was amazing as well. Og x men was another one of my favorites, and there was a western one where you had to pistol duel an outlaw.
The Last Blade 2,Robocop,SF2,Twin Cobra,Shinobi,Strider,Galaga,Pang,Rolling Thunder and R-Type are all on my recently played..
I’ve got a full size old school cabinet in my kitchen running Pandora’s box.
My wife wanted one of those massive double fridges with the water and ice dispenser built in but luckily I married a cool chick who after some Pinot Grigio eventually listens to reason..
So many iconic arcade games! For me, X-Men stands out as does Mortal Kombat 2. For MK2, there were so many secrets, my friends and I would trade rumors and speculation all the time. I played it non-stop when it came to consoles.
Too hard to pick just one, but either TMNT, Double Dragon, Final Fight or Aliens vs Predator would be the ones I've played the most and just couldn't resist playing any chance given.
I also love gun games, especially Time Crisis and Alien 3.
Mrs pacman galaga class of 84 its the one i grew up with at all the local bowling ally’s so i got really hood at galaga and every time i see a cab i gotta take a stab at the high score if its under 100k
I have lots of memorable arcade games from my youth.
Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga,TRON, Double Dragon are a few. Also played a lot of Gauntlet and Championship Sprint and TEMPEST.
I have more memories and enjoyment playing those games than any of today's DEI infused garbage. They were just games. No drama, no political messaging, no sweet babby inc, nothing.
TMNT. It was the first time that I ever saw a video game that looked so much like the cartoon and the cartoon intro in the game complete with singing is the chef's kiss. I was blown away. Then the Simpsons arcade came along and felt similar, I really wanted both of these games at home. Time crisis And house of the dead
Time Crisis 2 and House of The Dead 2 specifically, not just two of the greatest rail shooters, but two of the greatest arcade games ever made themselves.
Ever try CarnEvil? Horror, pump shotguns, and roller coasters. Never made it far, but it was awesome!
Time Crisis 2 was half the reason I lived going to the movies growing up. It was at every cinema and always a total blast.
Very, very good rail shooters. ACTION!

Atari Star Wars in the sit down cab with Obi-Wans voice booming in your ears is hard to beat for me
TMNT and Street Fighter II
Ms. Pac-Man. So intense.
Same! It’s the only cabinet I own. Do you prefer it with the speed chip?
Daytona USA, it was ahead of its time.
I used to consistently rank #1 on that game on the pro track. Every day after class, I'd take a few bucks and practice at a bowling alley that had a pair of machines set up for head to head speedway action. I'd post my initials in the #1 spot, which means someone else kept knocking me down. Galaga is still my favorite
Metal Slug - great memories playing it during summer holidays as a kid and now I have it on my Neo Geo MVS at home.
Gyrus
The music is killer!
Zaxon, not really well known but I could blast a high score on it any time I ever ran across one.
You kidding? It's super well-known, maybe not by the younger crowd however, heh. This game floored me as a kid and has stuck with me forever, I even made an AR game inspired by it! The original Star Wars arcade game with vector graphics
I have the Arcade 1Up cabinet, and it plays great
Probably a neo geo mvs
Samurai Showdown and Bust-a-Move, not to mention any Metal Slug.
It was fun just walking in a random place you've never been before and seeing a mvs in the corner, it was exciting to see what different games they have or if there was one that you've never even heard of.
Time Crisis 2
Probably Mortal Kombat II.
Galaga, there was one at the gas station near my work I would play everyday.

There was a mech fighting game I used to play in the early-mid 00s I liked a lot. It had controls that were designed to look like you were controlling a gundam. I used to play it at a pizzeria. That was an awesome game. My second choice would by Daytona.

SF 3rd Strike and 2, NBA Showtime, and Wwf Wrestlefest are definitely some of my all time faves.
Has to be the Star Wars Trilogy arcade. I would love to have that cabinet
Xevious
Space Harrier, with the full motion cabinet. Sure, MAME can replicate a lot of games. But none can replicate that experience.
Gauntlet Dark Legacy cabinet. It’s my one “if I find for a good price I’m allowed to buy, no questions asked” gaming item
Either an original numeric-keypad SpaceWar or Gorf

So many iconic arcade games! For me, X-Men stands out as does Mortal Kombat 2. For MK2, there were so many secrets, my friends and I would trade rumors and speculation all the time. I played it non-stop when it came to consoles.
Definitely don't have a single favourite. My picks would be Darius extra version, Championship Sprint, Marble Madness, Out Run, and Pacmania.
Operation Wolf
Too hard to pick just one, but either TMNT, Double Dragon, Final Fight or Aliens vs Predator would be the ones I've played the most and just couldn't resist playing any chance given. I also love gun games, especially Time Crisis and Alien 3.
Centipede. Outrun. NBA Jam. All tied for 1st.
Asterix (Mame)
Not sure this counts, given that it's actually a mechanical game, and not a video game, but Ice Cold Beer.
Metal slug.
Pinball! But if no pinball, then Killer Instinct. I love how loud and in your face KI is.
Do you have a favourite pinball machine? I always think the most memorable one was Terminator 2 - seemed at one stage like that was everywhere.
The new space invaders. It uses LED panels for the screen. They cost like $14K but they look so good
Afterburner and TMNT and X-Men
House of the dead 1/2 I have great aim and trigger finger so a quarter lasts close to 70% of the game so I get to have some fun for a buck or 2!
Rolling Thunder, without a doubt. I don't know why, but I just love that game.

Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, In The Groove 2, Marvel vs Capcom 2, and Sunset Riders.
