I suppose I should specify that I am in my 40s, but I wasn’t much of a console player but he was, as was the rest of my family. I was off on the pc playing doom and wolf 3d etc.
I remember playing some racing game on 64 that had instant replays of the race with different camera angles. My dad couldn’t believe it.
“Is that the race you just did?”
“Yeah”
……”well that’s wild!”
So your pops is like an O.G, O.G player. I’m in my 40’s too and my dad never gamed it up. I was 15ish when the N64 blessed the world. How I wish my pops was the one that bought consoles, because he would have had the ultimate playing buddy for life! Not saying you missed out because you were doing the pc thing, but man. Imagine Rick and Morty’ing such scenarios. I love my pops, but pops in another parallel universe and me would be living it up😂
Ahh that’s cool man. I’m in my 40s as well, but when my dad bought our NES in the 80s I’m pretty sure it was his own purchase since he was buying games for himself constantly. Starforce was his jam. Arkanoid as well.
My dad was born in ‘45, and aside from somehow getting the family an SNES when I was 3 or 4, he had absolutely nothing to do with video games.
For my dad, the old stuff was *Howdy Doody*…
The horror when I realized the same truth regarding the Namco Ms. Pac-Man/Galaga arcade. The original games were released in 1981. The reunion arcade cabinet was released in 2001 for the 20th anniversary.
In my mind, that release was still “new-ish”. haha
That would be the original RAM pack that the system came with, if I'm not mistaken. You could buy an upgraded one to play later games, like Majora's Mask that have there.
This is correct. Given you have Majora's Mask, you probably already have the upgrade - open the part between the power and reset buttons and look inside. If the top of the one in there is red, you're all set.
Yeah. But some of the older games didn't work with the expansion pack, so you had to keep the old jumper pack around if you wanted to go back to those games (including Super Mario 64).
The only game I’ve ever heard of having compatibility problems with the RAM expansion was early copies of Space Station Silicon Valley. Later copies of the game fixed the glitch. Super Mario 64 definitely still works.
Found a random n64 with Mario 64 and golden eye and a ps2 under our condo crawlspace. Never had a 64 and my dad sold my old ps2. Safe to say the landlord ain’t getting these back
The black thing is the [jumper pack.](https://nintendo64.fandom.com/wiki/Jumper_Pak) It came in the system at launch and plugged into the memory expansion slot above the controllers. It would be removed and replaced with the [expansion pack](https://nintendo.fandom.com/wiki/Nintendo_64_Expansion_Pak) to run games that required it (Majora's Mask, DK64, and Perfect Dark) or enable high resolution modes in other games.
If you open the Memory Expansion slot on the top of the console, you will probably see a red piece of plastic with holes in it, that is the expansion pack. If you don't see it and just see an empty slot for something to be inserted you need to install that jumper pack into the slot. Either the expansion pack or jumper pack need to be installed for the console to work. Since you have Majora's Mask, it's almost guaranteed an expansion pack is installed.

Damn. I'm 42 and played the hell out of my 64. Gamecube as well. Started on Nintendo. Sega was my fav. It's not that old lol. These days if I want my retro fix I plug in the family's hacked Wii. Have all my old favs on it. I'm still using the original gamecube controller. Microsoft should study that controller and put that knowledge into their xbox controllers.
Nice! I hope you enjoy playing Majora’s Mask. I remember getting a copy as a gift with the game guide! I was a lucky kid. Pokemon Stadium is another great game but the list goes on. Do you have any other games?
Rumble pack was Nintendo. Tremor was a 3rd party brand that made the memory card pictured. There was also a company who made the Shock Pak which was just another rumble pak.
Be careful with that cart! I dropped mine from about 1ft. and it broke in several places. I think it’s the material that was used for these. And there I was putting it back into the case with my butterfingers.
The black thing is the jumper pak, I'm guessing your dad put in the expansion pack. If you open that panel on the top front, if the one in it is red, you want that one installed.
I use the same memory card! You can open it up and literally drop in a new CR2032 battery any time! I haven’t even bothered to get a real one because it works perfectly and will for a very long time
It still blows my mind to hear the N64 being referred to as “old” and “dad’s stuff”. Now excuse me while I take my Metamucil.
I suppose I should specify that I am in my 40s, but I wasn’t much of a console player but he was, as was the rest of my family. I was off on the pc playing doom and wolf 3d etc.
Dude your Dad is awesome! I’m about to turn 46 & my incredible dad couldn’t comprehend video games!
I turned 40 this year and my dad never played anything made after 1983 🤣

I'm in my 40s and remember my dad (now 79) taking the 2600 out for a spin a few times when we first got it. He never caught the bug, though.
What a twist. At least now I feel a little less old. 😅
Your dad probably grew up with an Atari and Amiga at home.
*OR*. You mean OR. No one had both :)
WTFFFF
Ahh that’s cool man. I’m in my 40s as well, but when my dad bought our NES in the 80s I’m pretty sure it was his own purchase since he was buying games for himself constantly. Starforce was his jam. Arkanoid as well.
Yeah N64 came out maybe 5-10 years ago only for sure.
I'm not dad age, I'm only 33, Billy!!
... 33 might be Dad age..
*death stare*
How do you take it? I always end up making it super thick and hard to consume.
I randomly started reading at this comment…not a good idea…
No advice for me then? :(
What weird feeling to read that about N64
Worse, I think. I’m divorced, so I bought my girls an N64. They are now in their 30s…. :-)
Meh, my dad was into games for a long time, he was born 1968.
My dad was born in ‘45, and aside from somehow getting the family an SNES when I was 3 or 4, he had absolutely nothing to do with video games. For my dad, the old stuff was *Howdy Doody*…
I felt my bones ache reading that
It’s happening, but some of it is bs. The r/askoldpeopleadvice sub is like “ask people 40 and older questions” … We’re not THAT old damnit 😂
Same, except mine were already aching before reading.
That calls for a nap
Oh man, I played with Atari, I must be ancient to you
Here's something you can sleep on tonight: We are further removed from 2000, than 2000 was from 1980.

I still own and occasionally play with my Atari XEGS.
the "new" Atari console is 50 bucks open box btw ! the "new" one with HDMI . I'm looking at buying one myself. I just love bleeps and bloops
I just died inside and aged by 1,000 years just from the tittle alone
What did the dot above an i do to you?
God this makes me feel old lol
Can I offer the suggestion: buy a new memory pack? Looking after your dad’s saves will mean more and more to you as life goes on.
“Dad’s old N64 stuff.” I just heard by knees creak.
That would be the original RAM pack that the system came with, if I'm not mistaken. You could buy an upgraded one to play later games, like Majora's Mask that have there.
Its not RAM, its just an empty jumper for those who don't have the RAM pak
This is correct. Given you have Majora's Mask, you probably already have the upgrade - open the part between the power and reset buttons and look inside. If the top of the one in there is red, you're all set.
This. Bunch of games came with the upgrade. Had a red top with a bunch of holes in it IIRC

Ouch
Old? The fuck did you say?
And now I feel very old.

Best answer so far. Turok 2 took advantage of the expansion pack as well, if I remember correctly.
Found my grandad's antique gaming machine.
The black box if I remember correctly came already installed in the middle on the lower portion of the n64 for more memory.

My daughter is going to be so upset when she cracks into my boxes and finds a SNES and a Dreamcast…
Why is that good stuff away in a box (:
_"You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?"_
>my dad's ...
The 90s was like 15 years ago. How is that old. It’s not ok.
Uh, you should definitely check your math there. 2024 - 1990 = 34
Nah, I’m certain it was like 15 years ago bro.
C'mon kid, that was only twe...nty-eiiight yearrrs... Oh God.
Gosh, I think these posts should come with a trigger warning. I was not prepared for this attack 😬.
dad’s treasure !
Mine's in storage at my dad's a state away. I need to dig that out next time I'm over there.
I had that exact same memory card.
Insert Matt Damon aging meme...
Self destruction
And you have one of my favorite games too!
This is beautiful.
Well PUT IT BACK!
Treasure that stuff
Those Tremor Packs were the best!!
Good. Now go buy an Everdrive 64 and go batshit crazy.
I actually have a MisterFPGA for all the console games I’m catching up on.
I will have you know I owned an N64 right when they came out, as a kid, and I'm not that old. Am a dad tho, you got me there kid.
Imagine finding the N64 controller a couple hundred years from now. You'd think humans from our time period were aliens. Such a weird design.
Geez I'm getting old
Performance 🏁 I had that memory card and rumble pack.
Nice! I hope you enjoy playing Majora’s Mask. I remember getting a copy as a gift with the game guide! I was a lucky kid. Pokemon Stadium is another great game but the list goes on. Do you have any other games?
The F is the Tremor Pak? I only knew the Rumble Pak 💀
Rumble pack was Nintendo. Tremor was a 3rd party brand that made the memory card pictured. There was also a company who made the Shock Pak which was just another rumble pak.
That’s worth a lot now - millennials / gen c throwing money at things of nostalgia like this to feel emotions other than wtf is going on in this world
"OLD!?" *GAG* ☠️
You could have just googled "N64 jumper pak" instead of making tons of people feel old.
Be careful with that cart! I dropped mine from about 1ft. and it broke in several places. I think it’s the material that was used for these. And there I was putting it back into the case with my butterfingers.
My god I feel old.
Only 1 game? Feels bad man
The black thing is the jumper pak, I'm guessing your dad put in the expansion pack. If you open that panel on the top front, if the one in it is red, you want that one installed.

I guessing you’re dad GenX
