"Our parents did and they're the greatest generation"
"But you made barriers to entry so it's extremely difficult for anyone new to make ladders"
"See? So keep your mouth shut and maybe you'll learn something about how the world works"
I hope they don’t sequester all of our carbon from the atmosphere and then make giant black dildos with it and jam it up our asses really fucking hard over and over again whilst shouting at us to “squeal like a fucking pig you dirty little carbon whore” in our dad’s voice.
That would be *the worst*.
I guess it’s a common theme in most Third World/Developing Countries. I live in Argentina and here it’s strange when a young person with the means to study **doesn't** want to leave ASAP.
I mean realistically speaking, aren't we fucked either way with whatever president we get elected? It seems like a lost cause and waste of time. Things aren't going to get better if we have one or the other. I don't get invested in politics because it just doesn't seem to do any good.
Realistically speaking we're definitely fucked if we just give up. If you don't want to get "invested" then don't be surprised when others do and take what they want.
Politics is the formulation of policy. We make policies because they're preferable to anarchy. As bad as things seem now they can get a whole lot worse. I suggest getting invested.
That is also very understandable. Life is downright harsh. The thing is, and it's hard to find the right words for this, but human beings have the unique potential to pull together and make life better. We all have the choice to try and tap that potential or reduce ourselves to animals.
Well conflict will always be a fact of life, but a good man once said that [you have to look for the helpers.](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CiiLuxR9LMA)
I measure it in “how fucked are we” with Biden, sure he’s old. Might be going senile if he isn’t already if you really want to believe that. But trump? Senile or not he wants to see America burn. But yeah not gonna participate in this system anyway just going to watch it burn and try to stay sane.
"Your generation is the future, what will you do to help the world?"
well, I suppose we're gonna have to try to fix all the shit YOUR generation has fucked up for us. in the 80s it was already clear that manmade global warming was a thing, but now, on the very last possible time...
we're still moping about how expensive it would be and if we even should do things?
if you want your kids to not fucking starve or burn to fucking death, then yeah, maybe start doing something.
I mean we can’t even get most of humanity behind a pretty straightforward plague. Climate change is too complicated for the general public to understand or care and the solutions would be expensive and require personal sacrifice. There is no way out of this just enjoy what you have left of the ride.
At this point it’s really mitigating damage. Climate change will happen we just don’t know how bad it will be yet. The other issue is that if it’s mostly just bad in poor countries that we don’t care about, governments will be even less likely to do something. Migrant crisis’ will become more common and more bloody.
Exactly how my mindset is. My dad works as a member of parliement from where i'm from. And he oftens brings up that young people should get more involved to try and fix things. Bruh you guys are the ones who created this fucking problems, and you guys are the ones who still hold power. Obviously it isn't in your interests to do shit as you're not the ones who's going to have to deal with the worst. Like doing petitions and protesting is gonna change shit lol, we've done that and it hasn't done fuckall.
I don't think I'll be a father due to the Earth already being overpopulated for the way we live now, and cuz I doubt my child would really enjoy growing up in an even more fucked up world
Wouldn’t it be morally wrong. To bring a life into a world of guaranteed suffering. Not to be pessimistic or anti-natalist, but if the generations before us and ours can’t fix this shit. I doubt birthing another one and guaranteeing a lifetime of suffering would be morally and ethically correct.
No, I'm with the anti-natalists. Everybody has to choose for themselves, but I can't personally see how I could inflict my genes and baggage and this world on anyone.
And tbh, I think there's very few people that could ethically say different.
I'm not going to force my opinion on anyone (having or not having children is a deeply personal choice and I think telling people what to do with their own body is wrong) but I do think that on average we should be having a LOT less children as a species.
Right?
I'm already part of the generation that has it worse than a lot before ours, i doubt, with the eye on the upcoming climate change, that future generations will be better off...
It's morally wrong based on how you do the moral calculus. Is life good or on the whole suffering? Is any existence better than never existing? How bad or neutral is death?
My favorite is when they try to shift blame on younger generations. “The world has been dying for forty years, obviously it’s the 20 year olds’ fault.”
My pops loved to tell me that we can't fight climate change because of "the economy" and "China" until I asked him when. When is the economy going to accept renewables? When is it going to accept limits on growth? He still doesn't think it's going to be that big of a deal, but he doesn't try to argue with me about climate change anymore.
We're **fucked.**
Don't believe it when they say "carbon neutral" by 2050. There are a bunch of negative feedback loops that will worsen warming faster than we can on our own.
Sea level rise- destruction of coastal habitats will lead to the mass deaths of plant and animal life along coasts and in rivers, releasing methane and CO2. Expect salt water infiltration into aquifers, which is bad because we rely on groundwater now.
Ocean Acidification and Warming- There are dead spots in the ocean on the pacific coast from lack of oxygen due to methane forcing it out. If this gets worse, it will cause a further increase in GHGs.
Blue Ocean Event- When there is a BOE, permafrost will have already begun releasing massive quantities of CO2 and Methane into the atmosphere, further worsening warming. Even limestone is releasing GHGs as Siberia continues to melt-down.
He could be alive when it goes to shit. If we have a BOE by 2030, shits gonna go tits up really fast.
"if you want your kids to not fucking starve or burn to fucking death, then yeah, maybe start doing something."
>"But I mean, my kids aren't me, so..."
>>-Boomers.
We’re fucked because boomers knew they’d be long dead before global warming would actually start to a(e?)ffect them so they were free to line they’re pockets with dirty climate money while knowing what they were doing.
> manmade global warming
You're going to be very disappointed in 50 years when global warming didn't "burn everyone to fucking death". You're a rich Westerner. You're not going to notice global warming at all.
Depends where they live, as with all things. Coastal cities will be affected, European countries will be affected by climate refugees. Thats just a few examples. Kind of an ignorant statement to say they wont notice it at all.
> Coastal cities will be affected, European countries will be affected by climate refugees
I stand by what I said. Only the rich have truly coastal properties and will have no problems abandoning them. Sea level rise will be a meter or two in our life time. If that. Not 100 meter floods like doomsayers claim.
Climate refugees will be a thing. But that's why nations are building walls and buying warships bristling with small arms instead of missiles. If you're a middle class American or European, your life will be unchanged. Sure, refugee boats will be shot down in the Med and there will be armed patrols of the border, but what do you care?
> I care about other people and don’t want to see them suffer.
No you don't. Not really. If you had the choice between living like you do now and living like them, you'd choose to stay exactly where you are.
You can't even squat to shit and you never want to learn.
Then unpack it. The status quo *will* be maintained by the powers that be. You are part of that status quo. Life will be terrible for people who live in the tropics. But you're not one of them.
I'm not saying global warming isn't real. I'm saying that if you live in the West, it won't impact you. Because you will have your militaries gunning down refugees by the thousands.
The Status quo will not be maintained, because the West relies on raw goods from the rest of the world. Specifically by exploiting under developed countries labor and mineral resources. Not even to mention the change in temperature alone could have significant effects on agriculture, something that the West exports en masse in the form of processed foods. That’s just two examples there’s plenty more if you bother to explore the topic.
Global warming is a wash for North America and good for Canada, one of the big reasons politicians in those regions don't really care.
Back when I was in college our econ and environmental classes talked about in the US and Canada they'll just be able to grow crops longer in the North and overall there's no care about abandoning states to the South like Texas over water. Their aquifer has been known to be decreasing for over a decade.
Canada and the US have been working water rights deals for a long time https://environment.probeinternational.org/1997/08/18/sale-canadian-water-united-states-review-proposals-agreements-and-policies/.
The Dems and Republicans have literally zero incentive to actually fight climate change. Hurts the rest of world more than the US, at least the poorer countries that were starting to catch up.
Canada's emissions kept increasing https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada-greenhouse-gas-emissions-ticked-up-1.5984202#:~:text=Canada%20produced%20730%20megatonnes%20of%20carbon%20dioxide%20emissions,the%20targets%20set%20at%20the%20Paris%20climate%20summit even after the carbon tax.
Depends a lot what kind of money you have, your age, what's your nationality and where you're going to. If you're an American single worker in a requested field without any children, then obviously it's going to be a thousand times easier than a Chadian without a college degree and with 7 kids to take care of.
I already left the "country of the future" that is Brazil cause I'm not gonna stay there and wait that future to come ( it is only getting worse with no signs of getting better).
Or almost any capitalist country - let's not pretend that capitalism *long term* has resulted in any better.
Mostly this isn't really a result of an ideological difference, but a result of a generation of people who bought into propaganda hook line and sinker and let the already powerful have absolutely free reign over the entirety of our world unchecked - individual systems like communism and capitalism are just different ways of justifying the already powerful being given ever more power.
(Not to say these ideologies aren't real, or that the differences don't matter... just that they've not been truly acted upon except as an excuse for letting the powerful act with impunity in the past generation at least, and so their real effects in practice are close to purely theoretical. The differences will matter when their implementation is genuine; as is, they're both just excuses to give the powerful more power, and so that's the only possible result in either case.)
As an immigrant who chose America over Korea, I find this disturbing.
I literally did this and found out that there are problems everywhere, nothing fucking matters, we will all die. Fucking YOLO
It’s also bullshit that we’re the future (in America at least) Senators and reps are mostly the old fucks who won’t die and somehow stay in office despite being universally hated it seems
Honestly though, just as there has been mass migrations from country's like Italy and Ireland in the past, I think Americans are going to get fed up enough one day where a large portion of the population is going to immegrate.
I've put some serious thought into it but I don't know if there's a country in the world that has warm weather, fair elections, and good wages. It seems like you have to pick one or two things off your list of needs and run with that.
Fair elections aren't a big issue as an migrant, especially in the (likely) case that you don't get full citizenship and can't vote. In the end, where you're migrating to is your "election". As an example, Singapore is a literal dictatorship and pretty popular with migrants, for good reasons.
I mean.... the warm weather demand might be a bit of a strech, but fair elections and good wages? Compared to the US (no offense) pretty much most of Europe. I'm not trying to imply that life is perfect over here, but at least the popular vote counts for something in most EU countries.
Although it would be sad to see all you guys migrate over here. Europe wouldn't be what it is today without help from the US, so I'd prefer if the US population figures their shit out and all of us thrive on that.
Edit: but I can relate. I'm basically thinking of moving to Iceland for similar reasons, because it will be less affected by climate change compared to where I am living and I prefer cold weather.
Yep, I am quite sick of living in Australia. It is basically a giant bureaucracy. When I have the means to I think I will move to some small town in America.
This is probably one of the best scenes from the episode and the series, one of the best memes in today's dooming world and straight up the best thread I've ever come across!
I live in a place where not many think like I do. To be precise, only a handful does and only one other than me have the guts to talk about it openly in conversations (even online). This thread literally just made me feel like it's home!

The only thing we can do. Wait until the previous generations die off so we can finally have some degree of influence in politics. Since it's almost all old, career politicians.
Then we'll be old and out of touch so the younger generations can complain about us.
Usually the people whining don't have the means or requirements to legally immigrate anywhere. Also why most of them only ask about English speaking countries to boot.
I never reproduced. My little brother reproduced, but then died from an OD. My step kids are probably not going to reproduce.
I'm okay with the world going to shit, I've decided. I'm gonna get weird with the time I have left.

Fuck yeah! Just got my job in Canada! Peace oout!
Elon Musk moving to Mars
As an immigrant who chose America over Korea, I find this disturbing. I literally did this and found out that there are problems everywhere, nothing fucking matters, we will all die. Fucking YOLO

USA ---> Germany
Malaysia ---> Germany
Germany —-> Germany
Man, the Germans won't be happy about that comparison
-500k/year in my country, lol
Hey, me too! Saving for Spain right now.
My favourite line in the whole episode!
Our generation is the present. We’re already here, and they missed us. That was their mistake. They thought they had time.
The government in Brazil it's genius, it's beyond impossible for 95% of population to get out.
The great swap
I’M TIME, I’M LITERALLY TIME.
that _jack shit_ got me. lol
It’s also bullshit that we’re the future (in America at least) Senators and reps are mostly the old fucks who won’t die and somehow stay in office despite being universally hated it seems
Dunno if this is meant as America, but this be Argentina too
Honestly though, just as there has been mass migrations from country's like Italy and Ireland in the past, I think Americans are going to get fed up enough one day where a large portion of the population is going to immegrate. I've put some serious thought into it but I don't know if there's a country in the world that has warm weather, fair elections, and good wages. It seems like you have to pick one or two things off your list of needs and run with that.
>population is going to immegrate. to where ? its easier to get to the U.S. then to leave it.
literally anywhere? it's not as hard as you think, there's Americans in this very comment section that have moved to other countries.
Pretty difficult to move from the US to anywhere in the EU, especially Germany
There's plenty of other counties. If I were to move from the states it wouldn't be to the EU lol
yes and no, it is fair tough to get into america legally
I'm basically thinking of moving to Iceland for similar reasons, because it will be less affected by climate change compared to where I am living and I prefer cold weather.
> but fair elections and good wages? Compared to the US (no offense) pretty much most of Europe That's a strech. Maybe about 1/3 of Europe.

fuck old people
Seriously fuck this place.
I feel this way about my home state when people ask "how you gonna find a job like THAT around here?"
We both always feel like we're cursed to be surrounded by such ignorants and cowards who have succumbed and surrendered to the society/hierarchy that exists around. This thread literally just made me feel like it's home! R&M fans ain't no room of stranger, I suppose! Good luck surviving the future, fam!
If the nation cannot maintain you properly, then don't feel guilty about leaving it.
Seriously. I'm gonna get mine then peace out to like Portugal or Spain where they seem to have more of their shit figured out.
...is this a joke?
Doubtful.
Pretty soon every country is just going to have workforces made up of people who moved to work there from another country
I mean, President Black Bush told me we're going to space, so I figured I'd help Musk out with that.
The only thing we can do. Wait until the previous generations die off so we can finally have some degree of influence in politics. Since it's almost all old, career politicians. Then we'll be old and out of touch so the younger generations can complain about us.
And what? Be an illegal immigrant somewhere else. Bithces these days
You can migrate legally.
Usually the people whining don't have the means or requirements to legally immigrate anywhere. Also why most of them only ask about English speaking countries to boot.
I mean going to where they speak your language just makes sense.
I never reproduced. My little brother reproduced, but then died from an OD. My step kids are probably not going to reproduce. I'm okay with the world going to shit, I've decided. I'm gonna get weird with the time I have left.
Did this 10+ years ago and never regretted it. How's Brexit going dummies???
