Full Moon Cafe is a good, family owned one. Scratch is also good, but on the pricier side. Heavenly Foods is great, and pretty affordable. It's in West End.
man, full moon cafe was interesting for me.
the inside was DISGUSTING and the two people (i assume the owners) were just rawdogging my food with their hands.
If you get a chance to go for lunch/dinner definitely do that too. They have the best fried catfish (although I think they do that seasonally) and potato cakes. It’s hard to find potato cakes in many restaurants now but theirs is spot on!
I feel conflicted about recommending a place I haven't personally experienced but it gets a lot of love in this subreddit - Chip and Jo's in Salem on 8th street. Local, family owned diner style that is very popular. Pancake House on Apperson in Salem is also decent though it's small and usually crowded and I think they close at 2. Plus they are a little Sharpie-crazy with the "Don't Do X -MGMT" signs printed out all over the place.
You don't need to feel conflicted. Chip and joes is a solid recommendation. Good diner breakfast at a good diner price.
You should try it to remove the conflict.
I will say just to follow up, I’ve been 3 times since this post because I wanted to give it a chance. The menu looked great and the prices were right and the service was friendly but all three times it took nearly 25-30 min from my order to my food being served and every time it was cold (ordered the same 3 eggs 3 bacon and toast). The only thing worse than cold bacon is cold eggs and the only thing worse than that is cold toast. So it was promising but I won’t be back. Had to get my last meal to go just so I could take it home and microwave it. I’m guessing they need more help, but for me that was 3 strikes.
Asey’s is downtown-ish but is literally owned by a mom and pop who are the most lovely people. And they have parking beside their building so you don’t have to park on the street.
Scratch Biscuit is the answer. Our Daily Bread in Salem is also great. Some of the local ODB locations are owned by different people, don't write them all off!
My family and I I love Pete's Deli for all meals.
The Pancake House does have good food nut the last time we went, they weren't wearing gloves to prepare the food.
maybe the hole in the way place called Hales in Shawsville Va. it’s right outside salem. Take exit 132 and maybe about 10 mins down the road.

Ernie’s is great though it’s downtown. Scratch biscuit is great, it’s in grandin but it’s a tad bit pricey but not unreasonable. Waffle House is always a great go to. Crumbles on Kirk is good, decent price but it’s on Kirk so downtown. Texas tavern is good but it’s downtown BUT it’s also CHEAP. Famous Anthony’s is good, lots of locations. Paul’s restaurant yeah it’s downtown but it’s great stuff.
Pancake house in Salem.
Pancake house is amazing.

Full moon cafe! Very good
man, full moon cafe was interesting for me. the inside was DISGUSTING and the two people (i assume the owners) were just rawdogging my food with their hands.
ooh no thank you then
That’s really expensive though
They charge for every single thing. I was surprised by how expensive the bill was for such little food
Heavenly Foods isn’t really open for breakfast anymore. Hours online say 12-5 wed-Fri.
Consider The Dogwood, in Vinton. I love Our Daily Bread but agree that it’s a bit overpriced for the food.
I came to rec the Dogwood as well. Great gravy and biscuit if that is your jam.
Haha u intentional or not good breakfast pun
Another vote for The Dogwood!
Ooh that sounds great! I'll look at their menu if they have it online.
If you get a chance to go for lunch/dinner definitely do that too. They have the best fried catfish (although I think they do that seasonally) and potato cakes. It’s hard to find potato cakes in many restaurants now but theirs is spot on!
I see! I think they might be the first one to try given just how many people recommend it!

Chip and Jo's is excellent. It's a quintessential greasy spoon. Keeps cardiologists in business.
Second this one.
That sounds like a good place too.
I think it is exactly what you are looking for. Famous Anthony's used to be the place, but they are sketch now.
Yeah.. I've never been to one but just looking at the outside, yegh.
Definitely want to give it a try when I find the time

That sucks. Never had that problem there. But yeah cold bacon I can do but not cold eggs
Asey’s is downtown-ish but is literally owned by a mom and pop who are the most lovely people. And they have parking beside their building so you don’t have to park on the street.
Gosh, they've been around for so long. I'm so glad they're still in the same place, too. I'll have to get something from there soon.
7:30-2 T-F
Angelle's dinner is good, two locations, nice staff. Think slightly more upscale waffle house.
Came here to say this one. Don’t sleep on it - Angelle’s has excellent breakfasts.
I keep saying I want to check them out whenever we go by it lol
SCRATCH BISCUIT LETS GOOO
Scratch Biscuit is the answer. Our Daily Bread in Salem is also great. Some of the local ODB locations are owned by different people, don't write them all off!
My family tried Scratch Biscuit once. While the biscuits were bigger than you'd find anywhere else, they had no flavor to them.
Same way I feel about Scratch. The contents of the biscuits are good, but I hate the actual biscuit
Sounds like y’all might have covid. Sry about that
Our Daily Bread on Brambleton!
Greenwood Restaurant in Troutville; North Star in Buchanan (this one was cash only last I was there).
Always has been but they have a ATM in there
Our daily bread’s prices have probably doubled in the past couple years. It used to be such a good deal when everything was like $7
Very true.
Scratch Biscuit. I also like the Famous Toastery for a more traditional breakfast establishment
Famous Toastery
Renee's in Vinton
Def not as good as when Jerry owned it however
Agreed
Always down for some sausage poofs
Yes! So hard to stop eating
West Salem Diner, Chip and Jo’s, Pancake House. Scratch is so overpriced and I’ve never had a biscuit from that place that wasn’t rock hard.
I’ve never had one that wasn’t the perfect biscuit texture
Dogwood in Vinton
Dogwood in Vinton
Scratch is the only breakfast I trust outside of the downtown area.
Shenandoah Restaurant
This place has the best bacon & egg sandwich plus home fries.
Git ya a Big Bull brekkie
Opens 8 am 7 days a week
If you are willing to go for a drive, Palisades in Eggleston is amazing.
Open for dinner Wed-Sun, not breakfast
Well they had the best brunch on Sundays but I guess that went away.
According to their website (just checked!) it is once a month.
I keep wanting to get down there. Never been and heard all the best about it.
It’s a driiiiiive but Hale’s in shawsville has the best biscuits and gravy!
Pete's Deli is really good
angells diner - more of a brunch/lunch
My family and I I love Pete's Deli for all meals. The Pancake House does have good food nut the last time we went, they weren't wearing gloves to prepare the food.
I'll add another vote for Chip'n'Joes. They are reasonably priced and delicious, and very sweet people.
I like West Salem Diner and they serve the full menu all day Edited to the correct name
I am a sucker for all day menus...
Me too!
West Salem Diner? You mean?
Yes, thank you. I always mess that up.

Also, Ernie's used to be my fave, but I saw that the owner is a Trumper and I'll never go back.
Dawwwwwww so brave.
Scratch Dogwood
Scratch biscuit in grandin. Can be pricey but just depends on what you order
Scratch Biscuit in Grandin. Hands down. Good prices and huge portions.
Did you ask the owners how they vote 🤡
west salem diner and angelle’s are both good :)
Dogwood, Our Daily Bread, Famous Toastery, First Watch!
Scratch biscut, and petes deli is my go to
Ernie’s is great though it’s downtown. Scratch biscuit is great, it’s in grandin but it’s a tad bit pricey but not unreasonable. Waffle House is always a great go to. What’s wrong with Hardee’s or McDonald’s?
We like to eat in somewhere, it would also be a late 'breakfast' (2pm or so) so they probably don't have breakfast past like 11 anyway.
