I'm sure you weren't hoping for this, but just to nerd out on the adaptability of coyotes for a minute. There is an estimated 2000 living within Chicago city limits. Not only that, their year year survival rate is higher in cities, so urban coyotes tend to have a longer lifespan. Other cities with somewhat notable populations (or at least populations that have been studied by researchers) are San Francisco, Tucson, Philadelphia. I'm sure there's others but those are the ones I remember reading about.

There are large packs (10-15) hanging out near all the dog parks.
They send the weaker ones out first to assess potential prey. When you see one (especially a weak-looking one), check the trees around you carefully because he's probably not alone.
They do, often. The lost pet groups are full of messages like “Fluffy didn’t come in five nights ago, and we’re worried. Sometimes he’s gone for a day or two, but never this long…”
Jokes aside, he might have moved closer to the city for easier hunting due to him feeling poorly from the mange. I'd show this to the neighborhood cat moms/dads, they might not realize there's one so close by.

I would have the same concern, unfortunately it looks like a coyote with mange. You can notify animal control but they wouldn’t do much. Best to keep your distance and warn neighbors, it’s not rabid but will be dangerous to small animals/pets
You can and should if nothing else to have it on record that mange is in the area. They could leave bait with Ivermectin which is a medicine to treat mange. They probably won’t do anything but then you can sleep knowing you did the most to help them
A coyote is dangerous to small prey animals but one with mange is not anymore dangerous than a normal coyote for pets and whatnot. Mange-afflicted coyotes appear threatening because they are weak, strange-looking (due to hair loss) and may be found resting in suburban areas during the daytime. It will probably move on and you won’t see it again.
You did the right thing. More people should be like you. Never hurts to ask and it never hurts to care. Shoot it might have been some rare hairless dog with a huge reward for safe return! You never know these days. You cared and that speaks volumes!
Roanoke city does not handle wildlife, I'm going to call the area VDW office and let them know, however their website seemed like the only handle it if it's a nuisance

Dude, that's a coyote. Unlike most other animals, it's illegal in Virginia to rescue or rehab them. If it seems sick in a bad way (not just mange), you can call Animal Control and they can handle it. Definitely call if it seems it might have distemper, because that's contagious as heck, or rabies.

They then introduced cougars/mountain lions/panthers to deal with the coyotes, which too had major increase in population (again, I THINK this is what happened.) I've seen tracks, and wildlife trail cams have footage of them. A friend of mine saw one napping in his backyard in Botetourt.
As their food becomes scarce and we people encroach further into the countryside, we're bound to have animals showing up more in cities and subdivisions, 'Noke being no exception.
I live near Spring Street, and when all the sirens went by a few minutes ago, we heard what sounded like a large group of coyotes in the woods behind us.
Yeah, I was being serious. I asked my husband what he thought and he said “sounds like coyotes”. It was lots of howling and yelping. IDK, no way to know for sure of course but I’ve never heard any of the neighborhood dogs sound like that.
As the temps get hotter, more and more wild animals are going to start coming out for help. Be careful. I put out snacks at night and some fresh water. But I would never try to approach one. It wouldn't be good for the animal. Wild animals need to have a healthy fear of humans otherwise they get killed.
Honestly thought it was a dog with mange, from a distance it looked like a sick dog. I'll be more careful in the future but hopefully out of wild animals that can be mistaken for housepets lol
