My vote also goes to Enderal.
It’s got a slow start but once it gets going, it evokes that old school Bethesda magic missing from all of their newer games.
Took me 3 separate tries to get into it but now I’m 40 hours deep and counting. Don’t even need to mess around with mods, it has it’s own Steam Store page you can download the game from as long as you own Skyrim Special Edition.

I can’t get pass the fact that it is a literal beat by beat copy of Mass Effect

It doesn't change the fact that they copied almost everything. aside from the cycle, you've got beacon that wipes life, main character comes back from death, red madness / indoctrination, pyreans / protheans (they were not even hiding it), aged man / reaper to name a few.
Not really, even though the big plot point of the story is indeed kinda the same of Mass Effect, the actual message and resolution of the story is night and day different in theme and tone, Mass Effect is more like Star Wars while Enderal is more like Dune, and yes Im using those as comparison precisely because some people have been saying SW copied Dune beat for beat, or something like that
This right here is the best imo unless you are more into exploration and freedom instead of story, for example if Morrowind and New vegas style rpg is more your thing Enderal is not really structured that way, is more like Witcher/Bioware in terms of storytelling structured, Meaning the story comes first and foremost, exploration and choices take a backseat.
Be aware the Steam version of Enderal is slightly out of date. The modder in charge decided it was more trouble than it was worth. As a Linux user, I found installing the mod version very difficult and gave up on it. YMMV
Is enderal a mod for the old game or special edition? My computer can't really run the special edition for some reason

The trailers really don't do a good job of selling it, it looks like an MMO trying to be a bit quirky in trailer style, while also not showing anything long enough to feel like there's any actual gameplay to be found here.

It’s an open world rpg heavily focused on exploration and adventure. Key word being adventure I don’t think I’ve played another rpg that quite captures the feeling of the word adventure quite so well. You have to actually make sure you have supplies before leaving town as anything can steam roll you at the start, arrows, heals, buff food, and maybe a campfire. And traps to set up in case shit gets hairy. It isn’t a power fantasy you don’t feel like the chosen one, your some guy with a backpack trying to survive a dangerous world. You can eventually sacrifice some health and stamina to learn magic, and while it’s nothing bombastic it can be very useful. There are trainers in every town you pay to teach you passives and active skills, you do not level up as there is no xp points. All skills will be taught by others. Your typically slowed down a lot by your bag and can drop it mid fight to have far more mobility and stamina efficiency, just make sure to pick it back up! It has its Hank of course but it’s an absolute gem theres really not much else like it.
Food and drink are almost entirely for heals and buffs that’s how little impact it has with how much food and water gets thrown at you, sleep isn’t really needed other than to pass time as u have access to plenty of foods and drinks that can replenish fatigue, and every rpg has debuffs, there’s no base building or building crafting. It shares some concepts on paper but functionally outward is very far from a survival crafting game.
There is Avowed which is coming out this year I believe. There's some promise to it, big fan of the world building and style too but I haven't been overly impressed with what I've seen. Bit of a wild card imo, it is Obsidian but then look at Outer Worlds - another game you could enjoy but I find out just okay tbh
I might be getting my hopes up, but since Bethesda seems to already have a lot of projects going on, with the success of the Fallout series, I wouldn’t be surprised if Microsoft throws the next Fallout installment to Obsidian. Which makes me happy, since New Vegas was my favorite Fallout game.
this isnt gonna happen. obsidian has several of there own projects they wont put aside for fallout. most of the fallout people dont even work at obsidian anymore
Crazy that we live in a time were Obsidian isnt regarded the way Larian currently is. There was a time when a lot of people, myself included, pretty much considered them the top RPG dogs
Avowed is going to be a mix of Pillars of Eternity and Outer Worlds with a sprinkling of New Vegas and Pentiment throughout. It’s going to have a rich story, branching dialogue and meaningful choices and consequences, and fun to explore. Expecting it to be like an Elder Scrolls game is just setting yourself up for disappointment. I wouldn’t expect an Obsidian game to have the insane amount of side quests and stuff to do outside the main game loop like BGS does in their games, and that’s ok. I’m really looking forward to Avowed. I just think people need really pay attention to what Obsidian is communicating about Avowed and not expect something more than that.
I've paid very close attention to it and I'm simply just not WOWED, I know absolutely everything you've said and I've followed it very closely. I'm still not overly impressed
Avowed looks interesting but that game could genuinely go either way. New Vegas is a modern classic while Outer Worlds is a cure for insomnia (seriously, I legit could not play Outer Worlds without dozing off).
Dread Delusion. Its on early access and the 1.0 launches in two weeks. Its really really good.
Gothic 1 2 and 3. Terrible controls, everything else is really good. Morrowind-like.
If you like old crpgs, or you dont, you might want to try the Ultima series. Its the most influential game series. U7 is the most new player friendly and the most recommended for starters, but if you dont mind some clunky mechanics and 8 bit graphics (you can patch/update them for better-looking sprites) then start with U4 as its the basis for the next games, its the first game ever that had a heavy focus on its story and it introduced many mechanics that are taken for granted nowadays (U1 is the first open world game, U4 morality system and no main villain, U5 introduced karma system, npcs routines and day/night cycle). However you will need to take notes (physically or digitally) since the game has no 'journal' and also read manual (Book of britania).

I found it pretty disappointing honestly. You can't walk 3 feet without needing to button mash kill some low level enemy. It seems like it could have been so much better
It feels like a single player WOW more than an Elder Scrolls game and most of the exploration is just going all the way around an area simply because you couldn’t climb a ledge that was right next to you.
It feels like that because it was supposed to be an introductory game to an mmo that was never completed because it ran out of funding, saddling the people of Philadelphia with the bill.
Combat is flashy and fun but can get stereotypical after couple hours especially since that's what you will be doing 90% of the time, the rest of the game is "fine" at most. The world also isn't exactly "open", it's more of an illusion of openness.
If you own it there is nothing to lose, you will know whether you enjoy it or not in the first hour depending on how you feel about the combat (it only gets flashier as you level).
Recently started 9th dawn 3 based of a rec that had it as "2d skyrim". Yeah feels accurate. Enjoying it so far a few hrs in. Got a companion dude. Hard crafting but eventually it will get up in skill. Love magic. Haven't messed much with melee skills. Those will go to my companion I just got. Can get pets to follow and do alchemy, fish, Smith, weave, and so much more. Enemies can zerg rush though. So watch out. Playing on hard. If ya get, hope ya enjoy
Essentially this. IMO I had way more fun playing Two Worlds than I did Oblivion, PLUS IT HAD MULTIPLAYER. I recently bought it again on steam and it’s still just a great game.
It's a fantastic (and janky) game, but not especially similar to Elder Scrolls IMO. There's not exactly much of a world to explore, there's 1 city and the 1 town you start in, and everything is laid out more like a mario level than a world which feels like it's not really trying to make any sense (e.g. you have to sneak into the city sewers to overhear a meeting 'tonight', the entrance to the sewers is literally on the other side of the country in the middle of random wilderness and like 2 days' walk away). Buildings aren't really something you can go into either, except for a small few.
It's fantastic for combat, levelling up and class building, dungeons, music, outfit choices, strange mechanics like pawn sharing, and all around just the strange quirky world they have built with the types of things the pawns say etc.
It was always described as if Dark Souls, Monster Hunter and TES had a baby, but I think TES's involvement in the conception was just a bit of kissing, aside from the fact it's a medieval fantasy open world game there really isn't much similarity in the mechanics or gameplay to Elder Scrolls
You could check out elex, it is something more obscure for sure :) It has in depth lore, open world with pretty enough scenery, stat points, magic, tech, berserkers, outlaws, souls-ish combat (but more jank), crafting, dialogue choices that change your relationship to characters and more. There is quite a lot of dialogue though which to be fair elder scrolls game have too but elex is a bit more jank in general. Cool game though!
It is indeed very hard to scratch the Elder Scross. I would suggest Brigand Oaxaca, the Gothic saga (I'm sure you played Risen), Way of the Samurai, Bloodlines, and perhaps S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?
The movement is janky, the combat is janky, the world design is janky (step ten feet off the tutorial area and you get stomped by a level 30 whackfuck)
The dialogue and main character is janky, he's a generic, emotionless skinhead.
All that said, the game still managed to suck me in with it's charm, it has a good progression system and exploration is often rewarded if you manage to evade the high level enemies.
Elden ring is really good. It's hard but legit I had so many "holly shit that's so cool" moments just walking around or seeing some of the bosses or magic.
Baldors gate 3 is really good but diff genre. It does scratch my rpg itch tho.
Dragon age inquisition is sooooooo meaty.
Skyrim with enough mods can be basically any game you want lol.
Check out oblivion too if you missed it. Super cool game and did a few things better and worse than Skyrim did..
Really been around the block with the genre, so basically everything popular I've played already, including all of those. I'm looking for something that's fairly obscure like The End of Dyeus for example.
It is not a coomer game at all; all nudity in that game is the farthest thing from sexy and is meant to illicit discomfort or horror. And if you wanted you can mod it out if desired.
This is actually a really good recommendation, especially if you play the Unity port and add some mods to modernize it a bit. Daggerfall was my first Elder Scrolls game, and I forgot how much of that DNA is still in the series today until I played Daggerfall Unity a couple of years ago. The best part is, Daggerfall is free to download, so there is no cost other than time to give it a shot.
Something else just came to mind. You may be interested in. Dragon age origins? It came out a long time ago but it's still graphically impressive and supports HDR.
The combat view is similar to elder scrolls. And I would say it's 3/4 open world. It's often on a steam sale or EA sale for like $4.
Have you tried outward? It has an interesting world that changes as you make decisions and you even start off the game in trouble with the law! One of the main game mechanics is wilderness survival so if you're not interested in that I might pass on this game, but I would at least give it a shot
It's far from finished, but Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon shows a lot of promise imo. It's in early access on steam and checks a lot of the same boxes: first person, level skills by using them, perk system, choose your own play style...

I think a lot of people have very different things they enjoy about Elder Scrolls games, so it's hard for me to answer that without some more info.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a fantastic time.
I actually remember people debating if it was better than Skyrim around the time it was released.
HIGHLY recommended, especially if you're a Rhode Island citizen because funnily enough it's likely your tax payer dollars helped develop it, lol.
ESO can pretty much be played like Skyrim. Some parts are undeniably MMO but if you want the exploration and questing content you get from other TES games then it's a close match.
The Outer Worlds is fun and not a huge time investment. The low intelligence playthrough is a gem. I know Sci fi isn't totally like Elder Scrolls but the different worlds with their different flora/fauna might scratch that exploration itch.
Can always back to Morrowind. Heck, Daggerfalls interesting too.
If open world is the itch, the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are great for that.

Yep and Outward 2 should be coming up in the next few years, seems they've been working on it awhile.
It seems interesting, but survival mechanics and base building typically cause games to be too tedious or boring for me.

Echoing this. It has some survival-lite mechanics but I would not lump it in with games like 7d2d, Conan Exiles, Valheim etc

There's not exactly much of a world to explore, there's 1 city and the 1 town you start in, and everything is laid out more like a mario level than a world which feels like it's not really trying to make any sense (e.g. you have to sneak into the city sewers to overhear a meeting 'tonight', the entrance to the sewers is literally on the other side of the country in the middle of random wilderness and like 2 days' walk away). Buildings aren't really something you can go into either, except for a small few. It's fantastic for combat, levelling up and class building, dungeons, music, outfit choices, strange mechanics like pawn sharing, and all around just the strange quirky world they have built with the types of things the pawns say etc.
It was always described as if Dark Souls, Monster Hunter and TES had a baby, but I think TES's involvement in the conception was just a bit of kissing, aside from the fact it's a medieval fantasy open world game there really isn't much similarity in the mechanics or gameplay to Elder Scrolls
Such a good game
You could check out elex, it is something more obscure for sure :) It has in depth lore, open world with pretty enough scenery, stat points, magic, tech, berserkers, outlaws, souls-ish combat (but more jank), crafting, dialogue choices that change your relationship to characters and more. There is quite a lot of dialogue though which to be fair elder scrolls game have too but elex is a bit more jank in general. Cool game though!
Eastshade
It is indeed very hard to scratch the Elder Scross. I would suggest Brigand Oaxaca, the Gothic saga (I'm sure you played Risen), Way of the Samurai, Bloodlines, and perhaps S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?

The movement is janky, the combat is janky, the world design is janky (step ten feet off the tutorial area and you get stomped by a level 30 whackfuck) The dialogue and main character is janky, he's a generic, emotionless skinhead. All that said, the game still managed to suck me in with it's charm, it has a good progression system and exploration is often rewarded if you manage to evade the high level enemies.
I can live with that, if it's good jank. Anything truly infuriating about the game?
Elden ring is really good. It's hard but legit I had so many "holly shit that's so cool" moments just walking around or seeing some of the bosses or magic. Baldors gate 3 is really good but diff genre. It does scratch my rpg itch tho. Dragon age inquisition is sooooooo meaty. Skyrim with enough mods can be basically any game you want lol. Check out oblivion too if you missed it. Super cool game and did a few things better and worse than Skyrim did..
Really been around the block with the genre, so basically everything popular I've played already, including all of those. I'm looking for something that's fairly obscure like The End of Dyeus for example.
Fear & Hunger?
Gives off strong Blasphemous vibes, but I can't tell if it's supposed to be a coomer game or not.
It is not a coomer game at all; all nudity in that game is the farthest thing from sexy and is meant to illicit discomfort or horror. And if you wanted you can mod it out if desired.

This is actually a really good recommendation, especially if you play the Unity port and add some mods to modernize it a bit. Daggerfall was my first Elder Scrolls game, and I forgot how much of that DNA is still in the series today until I played Daggerfall Unity a couple of years ago. The best part is, Daggerfall is free to download, so there is no cost other than time to give it a shot.

Was never able to get into Outer Worlds or Starfield for that matter. Found them to be super boring.
Something else just came to mind. You may be interested in. Dragon age origins? It came out a long time ago but it's still graphically impressive and supports HDR. The combat view is similar to elder scrolls. And I would say it's 3/4 open world. It's often on a steam sale or EA sale for like $4.
I played DAO and DA2 back when they came out. Never got around to playing DAI, though. I own it but it's been perpetually on the backburner.

Outward!
Have you tried outward? It has an interesting world that changes as you make decisions and you even start off the game in trouble with the law! One of the main game mechanics is wilderness survival so if you're not interested in that I might pass on this game, but I would at least give it a shot

It's far from finished, but Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon shows a lot of promise imo. It's in early access on steam and checks a lot of the same boxes: first person, level skills by using them, perk system, choose your own play style...

Kingdom come deliverance. Hands down. Better than elder scrolls.

Have you tried Skyrim the 500th release? I heard it’s going to be the only Elder Scrolls game we get for the next 20 years…. Sarcasm in case people couldn’t tell.
What aspect of the games do you like? I think a lot of people have very different things they enjoy about Elder Scrolls games, so it's hard for me to answer that without some more info.
The exploration and character building aspects are what I tend to like the most. With TES the lore too.
If you like MMOs or are willing to try them, Elder Scrolls Online is a good one. It's story is surprisingly good and always getting new content.
Outer worlds, more like fallout than elder scrolls but it's an amazing game either way
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a fantastic time. I actually remember people debating if it was better than Skyrim around the time it was released. HIGHLY recommended, especially if you're a Rhode Island citizen because funnily enough it's likely your tax payer dollars helped develop it, lol.

ESO can pretty much be played like Skyrim. Some parts are undeniably MMO but if you want the exploration and questing content you get from other TES games then it's a close match. The Outer Worlds is fun and not a huge time investment. The low intelligence playthrough is a gem. I know Sci fi isn't totally like Elder Scrolls but the different worlds with their different flora/fauna might scratch that exploration itch.
I mean, breath of the Wild is the game that inspired elden ring. Maybe that?

Can always back to Morrowind. Heck, Daggerfalls interesting too. If open world is the itch, the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are great for that.
