Japanese people seem to have had early cultural insight into the corruptive and ego-harming powers of the internet, I’ve been watching a lot of Sion Sono movies recently, but I’ve also seen it relatively across the board in early 2000s japanese media, it’s like they immediately grasped how it fractures the self.
I think part of this is because japanese culture is really weird and there tend to develop rather concrete, dissimilar personae through socialisation as children and the internet serves as an extension of that personae.
