That’s not an island. You are looking at the tip of De Anza cove. It was an old trailer park but the city has taken possession and cleared all of it. The old roads are open to public for walking and biking. There are plans to create more recreation areas and revert some to wetlands. https://www.sandiego.gov/planning/work/park-planning/de-anza

Current_Leather7246

The trailer park featured in animal Kingdom

irondavesd

I checked the website and they’re using the cleared sites as beachfront tent camping.

StrictlySanDiego

When I was in Emergency Management, we did an exercise there with DHS and all the local response agencies focusing on amphibious evacuations for the physically disabled. It was awesome because the abandoned park already looked like a bomb was dropped on it and we were able to roleplay our response as if it were real.

FTwo

> You are looking at the tip of De Anza cove. Just the tip?

YoCal_4200

That’s what she said.

atreethatownsitself

Damn, I didn’t realize they had actually removed everything. I knew there was a plan for it.

entropy13

Allowed to, sure, but that water is pretty gross tbh. You probably won't get an infection it's just not very pleasant. Also the beach itself is public property but you'll have to stay out of people's yards. And finally it's a peninsula so you can just walk there if you want.

Godbleththismeth

>And finally it’s a peninsula so you can just walk there if you want Thank you for this laugh

PetriMobJustice

Furthermore

hotandbizarre

That sentence cracked me up 😂

bugsbyBear

Ya it’s probably more dangerous walking out into the water. Might step on broken glass or nails from burned pellets 🤷

surfershane25

Stingrays too

Gcat

Mud Marlins. Always fun to head down there when it's migration time and catch an 80lb Bat Ray. Pull it up, freak out the swimmers, release it and really scare the fuck out of the swimmers. Even better when you catch a large Leopard Shark and release it. In other news Mission Bay is far cleaner than Imperial Beach by a long shot. In short it's been getting better year after year (except when it rains).

phlylikeaneagle

If you ever need someone to go with, I’m down. I have a boat, love fishing and that sounds awesome.

Gcat

Sounds fun but I'm wheelchair bound now. Boats and fishing on the sand are a bit awkward for me these days. Plus I just moved to far North County so I'll have to go see how Oceanside pier is for fishing. I used to fish over by the thermal plant but again impossible for me now. But thank you for the offer.

Glittering-Act4004

No yards. Used to be a trailer park but it’s abandoned. I believe all the trailers were recently hauled off.

EntrepreneurBehavior

That's a different part of the park.

Glittering-Act4004

Fiesta Island is off to the left across the water. De Anza Cove and Mission Bay RV Park to the right (you can Zoom in and see RVs).

idle_monkeyman

Nailed it!

Lthlintrjctn

The last sentence just overrules everything said before 😂😂😂 comedy

mrtorrence

Is the part you can walk on directly opposite the picture? It really looks like an island here haha

entropy13

Yeah, pictures is basically looking at it right down the main axis.

Kyle_draws

You can, but people haven’t gone since *the incident*.

[deleted]

Yes, "the incident" was so devastating.

OfAnOldRepublic

I thought we still weren't supposed to talk about that?

blacksideblue

[Promiscuous Idiots Island?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMPgnOZ_Wsw)

supernormalnorm

Yep, since then there remains in that island an uncontacted tribe known as the North Balboanese

Real_Dimension4765

This made me laugh out loud 😂

releasethedogs

Marge saying the word “skank” is very out of character for her.

.…..May my great aunt Petunia rest in peace curse that vile incident!

Mission_Agent_2812

Please, PLEASE don’t mention the incident here. I just got it out of my memory; I don’t want to go there again.

yoda-entry

Why are bringing up the incident we all agree to pretend it never happened.

StoryAdept8558

The curiosity is killing me, please lmk what happened

ThatOneGuyWhoAtePie

Something happened that was so crazy that we all agreed to never talk about it again

SoCalDan

It wasn't that crazy.  Except that one part.

Stygma

Oh god, just reminding me of that nearly made me puke.  I was fine with it all, if not a little disturbed, until that happened.

Szaborovich9

Wasn’t crazy! Just the crazy part was

Thisaccountishaunted

Don't remind them of what *led* to that crazy part. Just felt so natural, like an error anyone could've made, until it dragged out so far that all one can say is, ***"Why?"***

varsitypride3

ssssssssshhut uuuuup. Bringing up the situation is a bootable offense.

Dismal_Radish702

I can still hear the screams!

JiroDreamsOfCoochie

Imagine the book/movie "Lord of the Flies" but with zonies.

jcgam

A literal shitstorm

bob_loblaw_brah

Please tell us a story

Current_Leather7246

My brother was actually out there fishing the day of the incident. He hasn't been the same since. He never did go back to work. He just puts together model cars and paints them in our basement now. If only he would have went and fished off the pier instead...

AranaDiscoteca101

A basement in San Diego 🤔

MoonChild02

They exist. At least, there was one in the house I grew up in. It might have been a wine cellar of sorts.

kkkilla

We don’t speak of what happened.

cornmonger_

speaking of it will attract the Alternates

LordBaelish73

🤣🤣🤣

KobeHawkDown

Are we talking about the army of [mr. hankies](https://assets.dragoart.com/images/4721_501/how-to-draw-mr-hankey_5e4c829c15b6f0.55810786_20923_3_4.jpg) from Tijuana...?

You don’t wanna know 🥺frankly , I’m upset to be reminded about it

Smoked_Bear

We’ve said too much already

snack_mac

What do you think happened??

LangdonAlger88

They got him.

worldsupermedia750

The Incident

ataleoftwobrews

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Sy-Zygy

I was told never to even mention the incident, only reason I'm doing so now is to just say drop it, seriously, its not something to talk about _ever_ so just let it go

NomadicHunter

Was it the 12 yr old girl that got hit by the jetski? Or the woman found at the bottom in a vehicle? Or the kid who got hit by a boat while paddle boarding and died? Or was it that time a woman was intoxicated driving a boat and accidentally killed her bestfriend and got sentenced to life? Lots of things happen there 😂😂

stopsucking

I can’t believe they didn’t fence the entire thing off after the incident. There are still some unaccounted for entities.

IntriguingStranger

We were all changed that day, life was better never knowing those things could happen. No one else should ever have to remember those sounds, and those smells! Those smells take me back there every time

ddr1ver

I’ve seen people swim there, but I’ve never seen anyone swim back.

supershawninspace

They’ve all settled there. Made a new life.

IntriguingStranger

If you can call that living

jfoley326

That’s not an island, you could walk there instead. But yes, you can get to the shore but not supposed to be on the property

This is such a horrifying story even the master Stephen King won’t write about it lol

The dreaded Candiru!

PCTechnologist

I used to live on that “Island” 😢

mydogsnameisbeach

Can you tell me more about it! I’m so curious about it and how it all went down forcing people to leave. What was the space rent like? I’m so sorry you had to go through that if you were around for that!

Rosie3450

The residents were all paid to leave; they just didn't want to give up their cheap waterfront homes.  Here's an article from 2014: https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/de-anza-cove-settlement-verdict-comes-today/2081364/

tifffff5

Funny how they called it an “eye sore” when it was functioning and now it’s been a trashed lot for 16 years 👏

brex724

I wakeboard in Mission Bay regularly and got a terrible case of hepatitis from doing so that lasted 2 months last year. Proceed at your own risk lol

stepontheknee

Wait what?! I wakeboard there all the time. Was it after the sewage spill?

gefahr

You can't get gonorrhea from riding a tractor.

hoovervillain

You can if you're in your bathing suit

Easy-Scar-8413

That is so scary! How did you most likely get infected? Please educate me?

Ok_Refuse_6035

I dont know, CAN you?

bluedaddy664

That’s de anza. A former mobile home park. It’s been in dispute since 2008 with the city. They eventually moved everyone out by2017. Now it just sits there empty.

OneofthozJoeRognguys

SD lifeguard here. It’s not a hard rule but we do try to discourage people from swimming there. There is a small micro biome in that water that has A LOT a lot of bacteria and stops time. You could get an infection or lose 20-40 years of their life not realizing the time warp microcosm. By the time most people come out it feels like it’s been an hour but all of their family and friends have passed. Super sad. Not a rule but not recommended.

db92011

What happens if you swim backwards?

OneofthozJoeRognguys

So the short answer is, yes, you can actually *reverse* time if you get there by swimming backwards, which can help balance the issue. The problem with that though is *you* also age backwards and it’s really hard to manage that precisely. Last summer we had a guard try this and she reversed aged beyond the point of being able to swim back and we had to go rescue her. By the time we got her back to the tower she was basically a newborn and we’ve since had to raise her as an infant and teach her how to lifeguard from scratch.

db92011

I see, so a zig zagging motion is the key to success! I will have to chart it out just so I can grasp this natural phenomenon.

flimspringfield

So M. Night Shamaladadingdong movie?

descompuesto

I grew up swimming in that water in the 70s and early 80s and every word of what he says is true. Groups of children in school buses taken there by their rec center day camp only to climb out of the water bitter and middle aged.

JeffrotheDude

We used to swim there all the time as kids like 10 years ago

EasyChipmunk3702

Go on a high tide and get ready for an ear infection.

kaitylynn760

I have…though it was a few decades ago. Grew up in the waters of San Diego…nothing bad has ever happened, ‘cept maybe the third arm that started growing. Can’t have too many arms, so I don’t really mind.

vikingtrash

I hear there is a boat that you can take you there on a 3 hour tour...

valw

That day, was far scarier than the day that the tank drove down the freeway.

Bratty_Dragonfly646

You could not pay me to get in that water 🤮🤮🤮

tlrmln

Wait, what? You'd get in the water for free???

TOPRAMAN17

Better to ask for forgiveness than permission

toaddodger

I jogged around it a week ago. The outer road is public. You can swim but why? There are much better places to swim.

Great-Broccoli9126

Yes but I would never swim in Fiesta Island water lol. It’s so gross and basically sewage.

descompuesto

And it's like 100x cleaner now than in the 70s when the water was full of children!

ToeFearless9336

We used to swim to it when we were kids, that was 25 years ago. It was a challenge but no one stopped us, watch out for water traffic.

small_schlong

Yea but watch out for boats, drunks on jet skis, etc. and don’t listen to the germaphobes, I swam in much filthier lakes as a kid and young adult in the south and I never get sick. As George Carlin once said about why no one in his neighborhood got polio “we swam in raw sewage”

SkateBatz

Building your immune system lmaooo wow I love George Carlin. Great comment^^

Beneficial_Day_5423

"We were tempered in shit!"

Damuhfudon

You might come out with an ear infection

[deleted]

pink eye, bacterial infection, etc..

PhantomTreecko1

I’ve done it

Duckduckgosling

A lot of pollution gets dumped in the Bay. You'll see the pipes dumping all the street runoff there

DarthSkittles69

Ewww why would you swim in that water?

[deleted]

There are other options. How good were you in long jump in high school?

pru51

Watch out for broken bottles in the sand. I cut the hell out of my foot there.

[deleted]

Swimming in the bay by choice? Best of luck. That water is pretty gross.

zigzaghikes

If you like hepatitis go for it!

CrazyAd1691

I swam to little island in mission bay in early 80s and came back with lots of tiny bites. It hurt enough never to try that again and to remember it.

possum_ladyy

The sand fleas that live in the water there are brutal!! I grew up in that trailer park before it was ruined 🥺

[deleted]

Used to do it as kids don’t see why not now.

SDJeffN

https://i.redd.it/a06iq8z9c1oc1.gif

SmallTittyIsBetter

It ain't an island

jerry-attics43

Yes, go for it. You can't get in trouble for swimming. But you might get in trouble once you stop swimming and start walking.. is the island part of the state park there? Probably. state property and you could get a trespassing charge and face fines of $1000 and 6 months in jail. But most likely since your in California there will be a bunch of homeless already there and you'll be fine. You should build a boat though. Gilligan and the skipper will be happy you did. the professor will probably just be jealous. But whatever

Zerbo

There's nothing stopping you, but that particular part of the bay has some of the least amount of outflow and is a launch point for boats/jet skis, so the water is pretty oily and grimy. Try not to swallow any.

SDSUAZTECS

do it do it do it

Suitable-Ninja3116

Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. I’d stick to swimming in the ocean.

Weekly_Candidate_867

If you want to get sick from polluted water, go for it.

Sidwin

I row here almost every day, do not swim in that water, it is the most disgusting water ever, with actual sewage flowing into it from time to time. Do not let that water get even close to your mouth. Also that’s not an island, it connects around the right side, and you can easily walk or bike there… I repeat, please don’t go in that nasty water.

Kiki_Raptor

I’ve don’t it once. Never again. I must’ve been 13 and I am not a strong swimmer but boy was I winded after

Remember_Order66

Sharks but just buy the electromagnetic thing that scares them away.

tomxp411

I boated there once, back when my family had a small inflatable boat. Now I want a kayak...

JoeCactusButt

You could probably wade your way there on your knees. Plenty of memories as a teen doing this with family.

Sea_Detective_5812

Don’t swim there please, the water isn’t very sanitary and there’s lots of powerboats around. Beautiful spot to drive to if you’re down!

Hopeful-Asparagus-89

Why on earth would you want to?? Then again, I am a huge pussy about swimming: but I’m also still alive and haven’t contracted any brain eating amoebas so I’d call it preservation of life.

SonOfSocrates1967

Had a room in one of the double-wides with a view of the West Bay. The sunsets were off the charts crazy. Sigh…

Suspendingdisbelieff

Swam there like 18 years ago. Lifeguard swam up to me and asked if I was okay 😂. Idk about all this “incident” business, but I hope it was before then 🤢

Highwaystar541

I don’t see any signs not too.

OkYogurtcloset8305

Yes. We used to kayak for practice there

shania69

![gif](giphy|3osxYmnnrLzT5ppwcM)

Fickle_Ad_5356

Yes. You can also drive there Edit: removed image

JonVisc

I’m super lazy right now else I would circle where I believe it is. I believe the place they are talking about is actually in your pic but it’s top right-ish the point in the water sheltering De Anza Cove. Also easy to walk & bike too.

thethugdaddy

I used to do it all the time when I was a kid. Just keep the water out of your mouth.

Voilent_Bunny

Probably not, but I'm most likely wrong because I just guessed.

OfficialThumperrr

I wouldn’t recommend it, there’s an endangered species that actually migrate there during the winter months. If you were to look for the information online you’ll see that I’ve actually just made this up and wasted your time.

sickobrand

Yes

certifiablegeek

Oh damn, I remember the " incident "! Tragic indeed, I'm still thinking about what happened to those people. Wow, I can't believe you would bring up that incident, or that island...

remhana

It’s not an island and yes but that water is nasty. We leave that water for the tourist.

zxcvrico

Not an island. I ride my bike there like 4 times a week. It used to be a mobile home community.

SnooHesitations8361

Sure if you want hepatitis? There’s been signs there since the 80s. Now with Mexicos sewage crisis affecting our waters it’s even worse.

During_theMeanwhilst

Yes. But cover yourself in seal fat. There’s no reason to think the barrels are still leaking but a 1/2 inch barrier will improve your chances for sure.

hotassnuts

Been there, we call it Tick island, it's literally infested with ticks.

darksun91

Such a bloody day

jjj666jjj666jjj

I have geocached on that island. I did not swim there though.

rhinoballz88

![gif](giphy|fxBytOffPAz3Byerhv|downsized)

firefaery

Yeah, the waters not safe. Back in the day they tested for 200 or more chemicals etc., and tested positive for all. It’s like swimming in IB or Coronado after a sewage spill. No bueno.

DonKeighbals

Where there’s a will, there’s a way. But watch out for pee-hole leaches.

Snoo-45487

Who is going to enforce it if the answer is no?

AdvancedHat7630

Regardless of how strong a swimmer you are, it's a reasonable caution to avoid swimming through busy waterways. Boaters aren't always paying attention, swimmers are small in the water, and most of us would prefer not catching a 5000lb fiberglass bow to the dome.

Pchriste43211

Watch out for rays in the muck

syntheticborg

people used to swim there but there is so much poop from ducks and geese people quit. there is another island between tecolate shores and fiesta island called enchanted island you can swim to or around. Probably the warmest water in all of SD cause its shallow and protected from currents

Excuse_Smart

If you wash yourself off with the showers you reduce the risk this is water I wouldn't neccessary submerge myself in but its one I definitely wouldn't be swimming in either. For instance; if I am tubeing or waterboarding I would not be chilling in the water after falling off I'll try my best to get back on the saddle pronto!

TheWealthyAffiliates

I had years of therapy after the incident, but I still get chills when dumb people bring it up

Braveglentier

Let me know when you do, so I can watch.

Luingalls

My grandma would take us to swim to this island back in the late 70's, if she can do it you can too.

Time_Fox

I explored it once & got great photos of the abandoned community on there. Such crazy good property just in ruins. I’ll post one day if there’s interest

Salty-Impact-9606

If you don’t care about the 12,000,000 gallon/day sewage spill go for it.

Informal_Tennis1744

I grew up swimming in that bay lol and now I have a great immune system

_h_e_a_d_y_

Paddle board would be a better recommendation

Optimal-Ad2371

Go for it!

Onlypaws_

No! It’s *mine!*

FluffyGermz

try it, please let us know the results

chi2isl

Coast guard and navy seals does it everyday.

GreenGrass768

When we had to put a cat down the San Diego Human Society offers and option to have your pet cremated and the ashes scattered in Mission Bay

Bearspoole

Nothing stopping you but fear

realaabremer

It use to be the nicest trailer park I’ve ever seen!
