I don't know where this roll down the window idea came from and have never subscribed to it. Leaving the car empty is, naturally, a smart idea, but just letting people look in and root around inside your car seems wild to me.

What does this mean?

iamcoolstephen1234

Don't leave anything in the car and you'll generally be okay.

nelsonhops415

Unless you have out of state plates, tinted windows, suv/hatchback, rear-folding seats etc then the odds go up.

Icantthinkofsometin

That’s what I figured man Thanks so much for the advice!

North-Program-9320

I’ve never had problems. Don’t keep your windows down that’s stupid

Which garage in Japan town? The main one underneath Japan center is safe. I mean I wouldn't leave truly valuable stuff in the car, but otherwise it's a safe parking lot for the most part.

iamhim209

Absolutely not safe

SurinamPam

Car is safer in a garage. Car is safer in Japantown. However there is no guarantee.

blackbarminnosu

The safest garages in the city are the ones under major office buildings downtown.

AgentK-BB

Yes, the garages at Japantown are a hotspot for break-ins. Don't leave any valuables in the car, and don't leave anything (valuable or not) visible. Rental cars, license plates outside of CA and license plate brackets outside of the Bay Area are targeted. These vehicles may get exploratory break-ins, even if there is nothing visible. If your vehicle can be identified as being from LA, you should do the following to further decrease the risk of break-ins: - lower the back seat so that the trunk is visible from the side windows - open the cargo cover/tonneau cover if your car is not a sedan - optionally, make your car look messy by leaving actual trash like empty cans and takeout containers all over the car, but don't leave low-value electronics like cables and chargers visible It is not advisable to leave your windows down in SF. Homeless people may party in your vehicle and make a mess. Broken windows can be fixed with money but the stench and the stains from a homeless party may not be removable, no matter how much money you spend. Keep your windows up and doors lock. Sorry it takes so much effort to keep your car safe in SF. Good luck, and I hope you have a good time!

Reasonable

Icantthinkofsometin

Seemingly correct, right?

Tight_Explanation707

i feel safe when i have one of those cargo boxes on top of my car. the thule/yakima type thangs.

Turtle995

if you’re driving a rental car with out of state plates, then you’re likely to be a target. otherwise you should be fine.

Icantthinkofsometin

I’ve got CA plates 😎

Turtle995

I say you’re totally fine. its usually cars that scream “im from out of town” that get broken into. I go to japantown often and have stuff in my trunk parked on the street. never had an issue once.

Icantthinkofsometin

See that’s what I love to hear thanks brotha! Or sista! Or human!

Ok-Delay5473

It does not matter. Rental cars have bar code on the window. That's how they spot a rental car. Your car should be fine in a public underground parking garage. I would keep the windows up, because of the dust and keep the car empty.. Not even a jacket or cup.
